  • THE MAVIC 2 IS OUT! goo.gl/kiYmBg
    This flight was for showing my son and a friend how it is to fly the Phantom 4. I did not intend to publish it. Out of habit I recorded the screen and the Phantom camera.
    We headed for a huge ship in the distance. Just like in the previous flight where I filmed the seals, everything was going really well. But on the way back we had a very strong head wind... and I was running out of battery!
    Ouch!!!

      Well technically, ignoring winds and such, if your starting battery-life is lower, the point of no-return battery-life is lower too. With 85% it would be 42,5% not 50%. Obviously, there should be safety added and the environment taken into account. So, yes I agree with all of you.

    For anyone else that runs into this situation here is what you should do.
    1. drop altitude, upper winds are always higher (especially 225 feet 73 meters)
    2. Put drone in sport mode. It will give you more distance for the same amount of remaining battery life.
    This man could have had his drone all the way back wih 15 to 20 % battery life

      @FriedToast 5 років тому +17

      I came here to say the same thing- get lower. Personally, I would've put it in Sport Mode and gassed it (been there, done that), but not sure I'd actually suggest it as the best method - I haven't compared the battery usage between the two. Is it really better? Don't know for sure, but it sure feels like it when that battery alert is beeping and you're out over the ocean.

      I guess the full correct procedure woud've been this:
      1 - Stop recording
      2 - Turn off all sensors
      3 - Lower altitude
      4 - Change to Atti mode and Sport mode
      5 - Pilot must drive the drone, not the Return Home automatic mode to save positioning power

      very wise. I would probably give myself an extra 5-10% flight time and jus keep SA (situational awareness). so for me 40-30-20-10 would be a happy place. Since that 20% is a pretty big "oh crap" buffer. Of course I usually don't fly in a straight line away from myself so my RTB is usually shorter than my overall flight.

      why does this mode use any more batttery than manual flight? cause i would of thought it would be a good backup. eg battery really low, it disables broadcasting video and reduces transmission power to controller and attempts to just get home based on GPS. then when its back within short range the manual controll could resume now that its back within reception? never used one so probaly 100% wrong

    • @thomasmaughan4798
      @thomasmaughan4798 5 років тому

      @@seewhyaneyesee Your question makes no sense. The idea is that, for instance, if the wind is coming from the north, you start your flight going north. It will go slowly. When the battery sounds the return to home limit, it will fly south, but now the wind is pushing it and it will return quickly and with battery to spare. If you don't want to fly into the wind, then a good idea is to make a very short flight to and from the direction you intend to go, and check the ground speed going and the ground speed returning. If the ground speed returning is much slower, you must allow extra time to return. If the ground speed returning is nearly zero, don't fly.
      Over the ocean the idea of getting lower isn't likely to help all that much and at 4 km distance could lose control signal and perhaps dip into the ocean.

    • @KjartanAndersen
      @KjartanAndersen 5 років тому +1

      @@thomasmaughan4798 Well, that advise sounds good, but is over simplified. He wanted to film an object in the distance. What he should have realized was that the object was downwind and this meant he should be very conservative with battery and start returning home much earlier than 50%. It almost seemed that the drone did much better in analyzing the situation than he was.

    You got caught by the old tail wind going and headwind coming back. I have seen that happen with not so happy ending. Davy Jones has more than one Phantom in his collection on the bottom of the sea. You might conciser a Mavic. They can handle 7+ mile round trip. They can fly 22.5 minutes and have much lower drag coefficient in a head on wind. They only cost $999 U.S.D. A bonus is you can carry it with you much easier than a P4. You do not have to mess with taking off and putting on props ever. Folded up it is the size of small loaf of bread. Really great video. Another nail biter! Happy Flying ;-)

    • @MrTUBER408
      @MrTUBER408 8 років тому +6

      No. Davy Jones was the spirit or ghost that ,according to ancient mariners of the 17th century(1600 to1700), presided over sunken ships and dead sailors at the bottom of the sea. Going to Davy Jones locker was a euphemism for drowning and being lost at sea, also where shipwrecks wound up(in Davy Joneses Locker). Disney just adopted it from ancient tales of the sea. Or it was where a member of the Monkees kept his jim shorts and sneakers in high school! Ha Ha Ha ;-)

    This has to be the dumbest drone video I have seen in a while..
    1. You manually switch to ATTI and fly for over 4 km without knowing.
    2. You disregard the warning of RTH which the drone calculates based on wind and how much power you need to return home.
    3. You fly with downwind for 4 km and disregarding that it takes roughly twice as much power to go back against the wind.
    4. You still keep it in ATTI when leaving RTH which makes it drift a lot since it leaves out GPS positing, meaning it drifts away quite fast in the wind.
    5. When you lost the drone you can easily track it the DJI Go 4 for it's last location, even when the drone is off.
    Would recommend you to read the manual, but glad to see you got the drone back!

    • @ivanabcdefg9375
      @ivanabcdefg9375 6 років тому +1

      There's an interesting theory about headwinds and tailwinds. The headwind always hurts you more than the tailwind helps you in round trips.
      Say you can go 20mph and the wind is 10mph. You have to travel an hour instead of 30 minutes to go 10 miles out in a headwind, but 20 minutes instead of 30 to come back; net cost 20 minutes.
      So W/(V+W) savings on tail, and W/(V-W) cost on headwind. So the wind costs W/(V-W) - W/(V+W) = 2W^2 // (V+W)(V-W) of one-way time, or, W^2 // (V+W)(V-W) round-trip cost (as ratio of no-wind time). Notice how it goes to infinity as wind approaches your velocity.

    Always cancel RTH that thing limit your speed to 22 mph

    • @AdrianStaicu82
      @AdrianStaicu82 8 років тому +12

      2x speed at 1.33x more power, I say 1.33x more because I consider that hovering takes N power and going forward at 45° angle will also take N power. So max speed will consume 2N, half speed is 1.5N and hovering is 1N. So max speed over / half speed would be like 2 / 1.5 = 1.33. So cancel RTH and step on it. Also fly as low as possible, if you are against the wind. I don't have hard data about this, but my 2 cents say I'm right, mostly because I know that much of the energy is wasted holding the thing up.

    • @mrmiagi33
      @mrmiagi33 8 років тому +1

      You are correct in saying that when going into a headwind (like this situation), then the most efficient flying was/is to go maximum speed. Not canceling RTH and flying in S mode (as fast of airspeed as possible) back was the worst thing he could have done. This drone could have made it back much further but lessons learned. We all learn, many times by our mistakes. Glad he got it back.

    What a great adventure.A little advise my friend!Just a friendly tip from a fellow drone pilot.When you get airborne, switch to ATT mode at the altitude you intend to fly and let the wind drift the drone for a few seconds.I know it's a very basic test. It's true that wind direction can and does change over distance, altitude and time, but it's a very good indicator of wind direction and may help you avoid this problem in future! The wind can be moving in a very different direction from your seat on the ground and at only 400-500 feet.Do this and you will lessen your risk.It might cut down on your fantastic adventures though!Great video!Thank and greetings from Australia.If your ever down under come for dinner with my family!:-)

      I think all drone owners should at least test it if they don't want to lose their drone but my guess is that it would be best to put it in sport mode and get back as fast as possible especially if a headwind is involved. Another good tip is to lower the elevation of the Phantom where the wind resistance is usually less.

    Quadcopters are good tools for aerial photography, but very inefficient in flying any distances. Unless you often record hoovering, you'd be better off with a powerful tricopter (more energy efficient, stable in strong winds, less drag and props outside the FoV) or even a delta wing airplane for long-range (ideally contra-rotating props, high lift, high glide capacity, can fairly easily be made IP64 and floatable, built-in front cam). Building it yourself (or prefab parts) and configuring it exactly for the purpose, would be best.
