Once you get to the location you want to land, set home point to aircraft location, it will set your home point right where the aircraft is and if you do autolanding or lose signal it will land at the new home point!
Man, your experiments take real nerve and guts. However, thank you for carrying out and publishing these tests because it really gives people like me an insight to what the capabilities are of our Phantom 4's. Great work, keep them coming.
when you were having a hard time to get to the house where you landed, I was thinking, why didn't he take the Phantom controller with him, it has enough battery left to fly it off the roof and over to wherever you are standing! I don't know if I'm right or not, but like you saw, it was still turned on when you got there... so maybe. Love your vids. I sub up now.
when you completely landed the drone, it shut off... keeping the battery level up. (off but still with power so you can take off again but using little battery)
That's just what I was thinking. It had 21 % battery when it landed and lost radio contact. It would have been able to take off (perhaps with a couple of "Are you QUITE sure, the battery is bloody low" messages). Naturally the machine stayed on, it was awaiting the word of command like a good little Red Army soldier! So all he needed to do was get in both radio and flying range and fly it back to his new position overlooking the landing site. Leaving the zoom camera on was genius!
man, Im enjoying your vídeos a lot! You've been doing a lot of things I would like tô do since I was a kid! And I Will keep saying: what a beautiful place! Hope I can visit this Island Someday.
Everytime i lose signal with mine i freak out but then i think about what a loss of signal would mean for people working at NASA so it probably doesnt compare haha
Jebidiah Springfield . Easy to think this way and finding bits of evidence justifying this reasoning. However I think all their projects are indeed true and there are other reasons for why something on the net/tv might not look the way you want it to look. 😀
Another great insight into what these little drones are capable of doing, and the settings you need to be aware of too. Thanks, can't wait to see if you do make this flight.
In my experience with my DJI Spark, when you choose auto-land, then even if it loses contact while it is landing, it continues with the auto-land. Once auto-land has been initiated, it does not try to return home with the loss of communication.
Keep up the good work!
That was an interesting test and adventure! The only thing you forgot was to carry along a fully charged battery and when you got to the quad, relaunch the quad with the battery and send it home. :-D I would suppose it would hold the old compass setting? Anyway, it would save from cracking up the quad or falling, and from having a accident climbing around the rough terrain. Real nice scenery and interesting test, thanks for your video!
so I'd like to see if its possible to set another homepoint (say on the closer roof) by landing on the way out there then you could retrieve it after it loses signal from there. would be like emergency airfield.
Yes, the only thing is that I lost signal after landing and didn't get it back. That might happen and an earlier roof too. But I found out, it's not even necessary to land. You can just hover about a landing point and then set that as a new homepoint in the menu.
wow, this could be very useful for people on long distance missions, with proper planning you could use a secure location to retrieve your drone or have it land near a friend. love your videos btw. keep up the good work and ideas.
when you take off, go into the app where you can change your home point. There you can set a new home point wherever you want on the map. Works great, I have done this. No problem
I bought the antenna because I got a bad signal at 450 meters flying in a park. But now I know this was because there were like 4 layers of trees in between. Obstacles block the signal. Same with the better antenna. It depends on what type of flying you want to do. You can buy a Phantom here directly from DJI with a discount: click.dji.com/AIK_3nSwENS-aP6XymE?pm=link
What would happen if you were to fly it to the building, land it, and shut the drone down. Will it start up from that distance to fly it back? I would like to see that.
After shutting down the drone, you cannot turn it on from a distance. What you can do is to leave it on, get closer and see if you can connect to it again and launch it.
This is one of the most interesting Phantom videos I've seen. Where are you located and why did anyone build houses in that area? Interesting stuff. Subbed you.
You could have briefly landed on the far building when you first arrived there. It would reset your home point. Great video. I admire your willingness to risk your expensive phantom for the sake of experimentation.
Excellent video my friend. Great test of the Phantom logic. I wonder if you would have landed on the building then took back off then purposely lost signal with low battery if it would have tried to come home or land on the building. I think it considers home to be wherever it took off from last. Would be interesting to test this theory
It would have landed on the building again, because it records the home point when taking off. But after landing I lost the signal, because the side of the roof blocked the view/LOS. So I could not have taken off anyways.
Totally depends on the situation and your position. But when you think you may loose signal UNDER an object, for sure you do not want it to ascend! If I had to fly under a bridge, I'd position myself in such a way that I have LOS before, under and behind the bridge. Maybe when I go up and the bridge may come in between, I might lose signal, but then it would ascend and fly back OVER the bridge. See this video where I actually do fly under a bridge: ua-cam.com/video/lUH-m4FV0ew/v-deo.html
Great test, very helpful. Can I ask what type of Samsung tablet you are using? (and does it have gps?). I use my iphone6+ currently but I would like something with a bigger screen? (I also have a standard ipad but it's too big to be practical). Thanks if you can help
It's Galaxy Tab A. Works perfect, but for me I'd like to have another one, because the screen recorder does not render 25 fps on it. But if you don't want to use that, it should be fine.
i have a phantom 3 professional and with no range extender ive reached well over 3.3 miles with good signal and still had enough time to return home with no prob
Not really actually. I just send it up until it cannot be heard so load anymore. Didn't pay attention to how much that actually is. But let me check on one of the vids... Well, the one at the beach with the fishing boats... it's at some 40 meters when I put on the goggles, so that seems to be a good altitude.
The directivity of the antennas is important as the others have stated so they should be slightly lowered in this case. Next time, when you hit the interference,. a good test would be to stop and increase altitude. The C/I should change in your favour as the (I) interference is lowered due to the increased distance from the ground. You could also verify your setup.by flying off to the right over the unpopulated area. I the Telecom business we often have interference from microwave ovens in this unregulated ism band. Great videos!
Surprise, it does what you tells it to. If you have set it to go home, it will go home. If you tells it to land - it will land :-) But funny video and nice area you are flying in.
The safest option is to set it to Return To Home. If you have also set the Smart RTH option on, it will even avoid obstacles when it returns. The most important thing is that when it tries to RTH, at some point you will get the signal back and then you can cancel the procedure and keep doing what you wanted to do. If you lose signal and you told it to hoover, you may never get the signal back if you are not in a position to move around to get a good line of sight again. Then it will run out of battery at some point and automatically land just where it is. In most cases that is not desirable. Only in special rare cases like mine, where I want it to fly from A to B and not return, you may want to set it differently.
Nah. I looked at it and tried, but you can only set the home position to the CURRENT location of the aircraft, or your own CURRENT location (if you have GPS on your device).
The DJI Go app has a flight log, so you can always determine the last position (while you still had signal). If you lost signal, it most likely is where you lost the signal or really nearby.
It will return to home and when it thinks it only has enough battery for landing, it will start to land. You can still move the drone a little bit during this operation, but you can not ascend anymore. You can hover by holding the 'ascend'-stick fully upwards.
Normally, I look at the table of contents through and read the sections I will use the information from. If I doubt later, I will read it in the manual. The entire manual is actually on your tablet as a PDF file in academy and can be read from the DJIGO4 program if you have downloaded it it once. So you do not even need a paper edition with you or access to the internet. Regards Leif.
You should take the R/C and a fresh battery and send it back to your house... :) And while doing that, you would check the right path for you to return home easy !
Your intentions are defeating the purpose of the return HOME facilities. It is meant to safe the aircraft. One is not suppose to deplete the battery to such an extent that it cannot return. So your remark, 'I am not happy with the test' does not make sense in my opinion. But you got balls I like your experiments. Inspiring to say the least. Keep them coming old chap.
Useful to know that it will try to get home no matter what. Seeing as you are only ever supposed to fly a drone within line of sight this feature makes sense. Only by breaking the law and flying so far away does this become a potential issue IF you have already decided not to return to home when all of the warnings tell you to. Like I said though, it's useful to know thank you. I'd rather you risk your drone than me mine haha.
DJI needs to build a drone tanker for in-flight recharging.
Such an amazing place for drone adventures. Thanks for the inspiration!
I wish my Phantom 3 Advanced would do my hoovering...
I appreciate you doing these test and taking big risks in the process. Definitely deserves a sub
Once you get to the location you want to land, set home point to aircraft location, it will set your home point right where the aircraft is and if you do autolanding or lose signal it will land at the new home point!
GodFear17 - interesting-and if you do that while hovering 10m above the ground would it not "think" the ground level is there?
@@aerialphotographyRDT I know I'm a year late but no, the DJI drones use their sensors to land not elevation. :)
haltorne.mp4 thanks
Man, your experiments take real nerve and guts. However, thank you for carrying out and publishing these tests because it really gives people like me an insight to what the capabilities are of our Phantom 4's. Great work, keep them coming.
You can select hover in the RTH settings, I believe.
Great videos . Beautiful area you film in!!! Thanks for sharing!
when you were having a hard time to get to the house where you landed, I was thinking, why didn't he take the Phantom controller with him, it has enough battery left to fly it off the roof and over to wherever you are standing!
I don't know if I'm right or not, but like you saw, it was still turned on when you got there... so maybe.
Love your vids. I sub up now.
Yeah, I didn't even try because I thought the battery would be empty anyways. I was surprised to find it still on.
when you completely landed the drone, it shut off... keeping the battery level up. (off but still with power so you can take off again but using little battery)
NeverMindYourOwn LOL YOUR PARROT MAKING ME LAUGH!!!😂😂😂
if you are below 10% you can't take off
That's just what I was thinking. It had 21 % battery when it landed and lost radio contact. It would have been able to take off (perhaps with a couple of "Are you QUITE sure, the battery is bloody low" messages). man, Im enjoying your vídeos a lot! You've been doing a lot of things I would like tô do since I was a kid! And I Will keep saying: what a beautiful place! Hope I can visit this Island Someday.
Sir, if you set your homepoint to aircraft location, you don't have to wait your battery out. You could just do an autolanding.
Very clever!
Everytime i lose signal with mine i freak out but then i think about what a loss of signal would mean for people working at NASA so it probably doesnt compare haha
Ha ha :-).
Jebidiah Springfield . Easy to think this way and finding bits of evidence justifying this reasoning. However I think all their projects are indeed true and there are other reasons for why something on the net/tv might not look the way you want it to look. 😀
i am enjoying your adventure. thank you for sharing with us
Another great insight into what these little drones are capable of doing, and the settings you need to be aware of too. Thanks, can't wait to see if you do make this flight.
I'll upload a new video later tonight :-).
coolest drone pilot on youtube lol!! nice video
In my experience with my DJI Spark, when you choose auto-land, then even if it loses contact while it is landing, it continues with the auto-land. Once auto-land has been initiated, it does not try to return home with the loss of communication.
It's like owning a DJ4 and pushing it to the limits. Thank you
I wish I had the balls to do something similar with my Phantom3 advanced. But I don't wanna lose it!!
I got the same as you, can`t afford to upgrade, so when I lose signal, I have a panic attack. Over 70 flights and never crashed, love my Advanced.
Same! I just got mine and if I lose it... it’s over for me
Keep up the good work!
I just subscribed. Amazing videos you are doing. I really enjoy it. Thumbs up from London.
Thanks a lot & welcome to the club ;-).
That was an interesting test and adventure! The only thing you forgot was to carry along a fully charged battery and when you
got to the quad, relaunch the quad with the battery and send it home. :-D I would suppose it would hold the old compass setting?
Anyway, it would save from cracking up the quad or falling, and from having a accident climbing around the rough terrain.
Real nice scenery and interesting test, thanks for your video!
No, when you put the new battery in you have no choice, it resets the homepoint to where the aircraft is now! I do consecutive batteries regulary.
This is Great stuff man. I am definitely subscribing to your channel. You are hilarious. Keep'm coming!! You make my day ,Thanks
Thanks, I'll keep trying :-).
Seriously your holiday home in the middle of Spain are you just like super rich you get to just play with drones all day!! So jealous!!
your videos are Fascinating and highly entertaining !!
you could set it go back or hover or landing when the battery is low. you could find it .
Great job! I am not that brave with mine yet. But watching you I am ready to start more adventurous flights
you can turn off return to home in settings, good video enjoyed it
I was just about to tell him that ....then I read this. Glad there is a couple of people out there that knew that besides me. lol
Beautiful place - where is this place?very good video
One word "AMAZING"
so I'd like to see if its possible to set another homepoint (say on the closer roof) by landing on the way out there then you could retrieve it after it loses signal from there. would be like emergency airfield.

After watching this I can't wait to upgrade my 3 standard to the 4. That range is insane.
Hi !! Greetings from Argentina, fantastic video, thanks !!!
great experiment, what would have happened if the battery was critical level, would it land itself?
Yes, it would.
when you take off, go into the app where you can change your home point. There you can set a new home point wherever you want on the map. Works great, I have done this. No problem
This was surprisingly entertaining! Looking to buy a Phantom 4 myself. Looks like an antenna upgrade is essential.
Paul Kabata or a DJI Mavic?
There a setting for what happens when you lose signal in the Dji app now you can set it to hover rth or land. On my Mavic Pro.
Wow you tested the phantom to its limit!
Great video
That was kind of a adventure by itself,. There are still lots of interesting experiments to do.
3:02 Song name?
You start with 65% battery, why you didn't charge your battery for example 95% ??
It makes sense for it RTH so then the pilot can regain control and then make a good choice for where to emergency land it.
What would happen if you were to fly it to the building, land it, and shut the drone down. Will it start up from that distance to fly it back? I would like to see that.
After shutting down the drone, you cannot turn it on from a distance. What you can do is to leave it on, get closer and see if you can connect to it again and launch it.
as you got closer it it you should have regained signal and just took off and flew it back to you instead of climbing up there.
This is one of the most interesting Phantom videos I've seen. Where are you located and why did anyone build houses in that area? Interesting stuff. Subbed you.
Can I have some information about those goggles? I want one
Check your gps on dji go while connected to the controller. It will give you the last detected location or the detected location if it is on.
Hi, great job! What App do you use to connect VR glasses to PH4? Thanks in advance
You'll need to install a DJI HDMI module on the transmitter for that. No additional app needed.
Hello , thank you for your Test. What are the the lens you've used while you were flying the drone?
Panasonic HC-V550.
Great drone videos... 👍🏻👍🏻 I‘m lovin it 😀
Welke camcorder gebruik je

he's got some balls.... after a while it says, "returning to home", and he responds with "stupid thing".... hilarious
Another awesome video sir. I will one day have that kind of courage with my Mavic...
So when flying under a bridge it's best to put in on 'hover'?
I like your spirit, subscribed!
Totally depends on the situation and your position. But when you think you may loose signal UNDER an object, for sure you do not want it to ascend! I understand and your video made that clear, thank you. Greetings from Belgium where drone laws are '???'
Sure miss your videos
! Where are you
Is this in Spain? It looks alot like like the terrain in Southern California and Northern Mexico.
Officially it is Spain, but these are volcanic islands, like Hawai.
Great test, very helpful. Can I ask what type of Samsung tablet you are using? (and does it have gps?). I use my iphone6+ currently but I would like something with a bigger screen? (I also have a standard ipad but it's too big to be practical). Thanks if you can help

Well done! Where is this?! Looks nice :)
Tenerife on Canary Island. Officially Spain, but it is near African coast.
have you determined the height the drone becomes quite ?
Not really actually. I just send it up until it cannot be heard so load anymore. Didn't pay attention to how much that actually is. But let me check on one of the vids... Well, the one at the beach with the fishing boats... it's at some 40 meters when I put on the goggles, so that seems to be a good altitude.
I understand your wanting to but seriously, why?? you have extra funds to replace.
The directivity of the antennas is important as the others have stated so they should be slightly lowered in this case. Gary White hes not using the stock antennas
Like other people said. Just turn off return to home toggle. Keep up the interesting videos.
Good test...Answered lots of questions with this test
can i have a link
l
to your signal booster on the controler please?
Should be in the description. itedbs.com
Surprise, it does what you tells it to. If you have set it to go home, it will go home. If you tells it to land - it will land :-) But funny video and nice area you are flying in.
if its RTH and hit 10% battery it will self land even if it has no signal.
how much this craft
phenomenal test
Hi, good video !!!
I have one question for you. If Phantom 4 lose the signal. Should it return to home ?
The safest option is to set it to Return To Home. If you have also set the Smart RTH option on, it will even avoid obstacles when it returns. The most important thing is that when it tries to RTH, at some point you will get the signal back and then you can cancel the procedure and keep doing what you wanted to do.

What music is that? It's amazing but Shazam is giving me the wrong track
Ste Richards game livet bort
also im pretty sure you can set teh home location on the map in the app
Nah. I looked at it and tried, but you can only set the home position to the CURRENT location of the aircraft, or your own CURRENT location (if you have GPS on your device).
Nice video, good adventure. What song is that?
Thanks. It's 'Crimson Fly' from the UA-cam Free Audio Library.
Congratulations for your videos! Very helpful!
Dude why not get a GPS for your drone? It beats losing it. Am I right?
The DJI Go app has a flight log, so you can always determine the last position (while you still had signal). If you lost signal, it most likely is where you lost the signal or really nearby.
Hello What app do you use to record screen great videos
In that situation it was ADV screen recorder. But nowadays I use NVIDI Shield K1 with built in screen recording. See description for details BTW.
thanks Im vey happy with my drone 4 pro too
Many Thanks for your help I really enjoy your channel Regards Bill from New Zealand
Interesting video, look forward to the follow up.
In a couple of hours... :-)
+NeverMindYourOwn Excellent, really looking forward to your follow up. I've never seen anyone carry out an experiment like this before.
crazy ,but a great test none the less , what are the goggles you are using please .
:-). All equipment is in the description.
NeverMindYourOwn its actually not
its not just me that cant see it then.
Nope lol
Love these adventure videos, Good job from England
i think that WAS very informative..thanks
if it starts to return to home and you don't press cancel what will happen? will it crash or land when battery is dead?..i think thats the question
It will return to home and when it thinks it only has enough battery for landing, it will start to land. You can still move the drone a little bit during this operation, but you can not ascend anymore. You can hover by holding the 'ascend'-stick fully upwards.
Thanks man!
how do you make your real time display such high quality? is it because it's through the goggles?
No, I overlay the real footage on top of it.
Congratulations on the found RTH setting. The settings are actually described in the manual to your quad. ;-)
Regards Leif.
Have you read the entire manual before your first flight?
I'd rather go out there and fly and see what I run in to ;-).
Me reading manuals doesn't make interesting videos... ;-).
That is correct. ;-D
Nice video, very interesting. Thanks, Robert
Well done. Enjoyed it. Subscribed!
Did you ever tested what the drone does if you loose signal after pressing the landing button? Will it RTH or continue landing?
It will RTH!!!
NeverMindYourOwn thanks for the answer 😊
if you land it and loose signal it wount come back
This is as fun as watching a TV show. You are so calm and relaxed, I would be too nervous!
I will buy a p4 soon, great video and great adventure, keep going!!!
Great! You can get it with a discount here: goo.gl/Mgcdfk
just wanted to say I've really enjoyed your videos. I share the same concern about rth functions.
ur one crazy guy haha I love it keep up the great work
You should take the R/C and a fresh battery and send it back to your house... :)

Well, this test was to make sure what the drone would do if I am going for a 8km one-way mission as can be seen in a later video.
its CE or FCC ?
This is in Europe.
When the drone started retuning the second time you lost signal, all I could think of is South Park's "Screw you guys, I'm going home" hahaha
Love your videos! Subscribed!
Your profile pic had me thinking it was a piece of hair on my phone lmao, good one
nice video!! i love that kind of tests.
Useful to know that it will try to get home no matter what. Seeing as you are only ever supposed to fly a drone within line of sight this feature makes sense. Great video!! This video is the reason I just purchased a p4p..thanks
Oh wow. Nice. Happy flying :D.
What are your camera settings
Auto and True Color, with a polarizer filter.
Thanks. maybe you can make a video on your video settings?
