I came home from work and went out the back to let the dogs in. One was fine and ran up the stairs, the other couldn't walk up the stairs and was wobbly on her legs. I brought her in, which wasn't easy as she was a bull terrier and weighed a ton. She wouldn't stand up, and her eyes were bloodshot and half closed, though she was happy, not distressed in any way. I rushed her to the vet, and all she could find was that her belly sounded a bit slushy. She said she had eaten something, but there was no food left out for them to eat so I couldn't imagine what it was. Then I remembered the plum tree, but plums wouldn't do this surely. Wrong! She'd eaten fermented plums off the ground, and she was drunk as a sailor. The vet thought it was hysterical.

My aunt rushed her lab to the vet once as he screamed in pain, thinking he'd been hit by a car or something. Few hundred dollars later vet couldn't find anything wrong. Uncle comes home from work and says, "You idiot dog ate three of our habanero peppers." Big peppers, too, and no he evidently did not register that they were hot until he'd eaten three.

Fun fact, dogs don't perceive spiciness like we do. They have way less "spicy" receptors in their mouth. Most won't even notice it until they've had way too much. Some won't notice it at all, until it hits their digestive system and causes pain there.

In my first job after graduating, I shared a house with a young veterinarian, who also had started her first job. This was in a small town on the edge of a large recreation area; lots of lakes and forest. One Saturday night, around midnight, the phone rings. I hear her answer it (I’m not surprised. She had told me she was “on call”) and a few minutes later she leaves the house and drives off. The next day she tells me the story.
A family (including kids and dog) from the “big city” had arrived at their vacation rental late Friday, and all day Saturday the whole family had lots of fun on the lake and beach. That evening, the dog started showing discomfort, and by midnight he couldn’t stand or even move his backend. Fearing the worst, the vet did a thorough exam including asking questions of the family. “How much exercise does the dog usually get? What did he do all day before he became uncomfortable?”
    The diagnosis? Badly sprained tail.
He had never wagged his tail so much, so hard, or for so long as he did that day at the lake.

Black cat stopped eating and drinking and I thought he was dying. Took him to the vet and $600+ later he starts yowling at the vet......apparently complaining about me adopting the two strays. I spent over $1k because my cat had mental health issues.....

I am a Vet and had a lot of these in my Clinic as well, concerned owner about ticks in the dogs skin that turned out to be nipples (but he is a boy! was the Owners reaction), Owner came as emergency because he thought his 7 months old female cat was dying (she was in heat), midnight call for emergency because the dog had a "Weird" seizure ( he was dreaming) and lots more. Never boring working with animals 😊😊😊

    • @spiralrose
      @spiralrose 2 роки тому +40

I worry about someone taking care of an animal, when they assume that the animal Hass to be female to have nipples. I worry about them having a cat when they don’t know cats go into heat… Like don’t most people research before adopting?
Or at least understand that male creatures can have nipples?

    • @stephg2867
      @stephg2867 2 роки тому +60

@@spiralrose thing is, I rather have somebody come (even if they wake me up in the middle of the night) and it turns out to be nothing, then somebody not come because they think its nothing and then the animal ends up dying from something we could have treated if found early (kidney failure in boy cats after not being able to pee is the most common). And the happens unfortunately too much. I rather have somebody come in for nothing than risking their pets life because they come too late. These are the real bad owners.

Otherwise read the label, if the first 3 ingredients contain corn, or other grains, it's not a good food.

My childhood dog had a bad habit of eating sewing needles. One time my dad was petting her and pricked his finger on a needle that emerged through her neck! Another time she kept coughing and wheezing. Mom took her to the vet, who found a threaded needle embedded in the roof of her mouth. She had swallowed the thread, but since it was still attached to the needle, it was hung up in the back of her throat! That was an expensive visit.

Had 5 horses and those for decades. Big Quarter Horse named Crazy (sweet boy) was laying on the ground, pawing and groaning--obviously an emergency case of colic. Whole family fought to get him upright and his head was hanging but we got the vet called and waited. We were walking him around in the dark, freezing cold night, hoping he made it. The vet came out and checked him. Said his gut sounded good, heart rate was up only a little and it could be gas. The tail then went up and the loudest, longest fart came out....it was a $350 fart. He farted a few more times and then went back to his feed before the ink on the check was dry. It was the most dramatic thing I'd ever seen and I've seen many horses with colic.

There’s credit cards, there’s payment plans, there’s the Humane Society and the ASPCA and the neuter scooter which also does basic vet care for less money.
If someone is strapped, they can call Animal Control and find out where to find less expensive medical care.

The best way to change type of food is to mix the old with the new,and make the prosess slowly.
Its not just about a dog making a fuzz, but also to let the system be used to another type.
It was my vetenerian that was critical to me changing the dogs food, from one type ,and when empty, a totally different one.
He told me its not about the dog being spoiled, its so much more .
He was right also, because my dog got so much better (the dog had sometimes a loose stomach). The vetenerian told me that dog couldnt tell us that their tummy hurt, but that was what normally happened to them, when suddenly change food.
In the end they would eat it anyway, just as we human would do,when hungry enough, even when they got belly cramps.
It made me so sad , i didnt think so far,i just assumed the dog was spoild...But then again, the dog food isnt THAT luxurious, soooo, maybe not that spoild after all...
Now i always make sure i mix, and have two or three types to mix in ,just for a change in taste, but alwaus some of the same types,so the dog get used to the the food.

Years ago, my family used to have a husky named Diva. She was incredibly intelligent, talkative and lived with my grandfather.
Unfortunately, after my grandfather passed away, she was left alone in his house, as we didn't have a place for the dog yet.
My family sent a person to bring her food and water daily, and we visited once a week. We fixed up things at our home to bring the dog soon one day, but unexpectedly, we found her limping and crying when we visited her.
We rushed her to the vet and he found nothing, but we took her in our home sooner than we expected for her to recover. Again, another vet visit and they found nothing.
Turns out the dog was limping so we would finally take her home, sooner than later. Smart doggo and lived up to 18 years of age! I miss you Diva

I'm a bit skeptical of the "faking an injury for attention" explanation. Seems like anthropomorphizing animal behaviour to me. That's like saying an animal is pooping/peeing where they shouldn't or being destructive because they're "mad at you." Animals don't think this way. An animal engaging in dysfunctional behaviour is doing it because they're either sick or stressed, not because they're vindictive or "grumpy."

The ability to remember when an individual has hurt you is important, and social animals often get aggressive or show other cues to maintain the hierarchy. I think you may be actally under-anthropomorphising, thinking a behavior is exclusive to humans that really isn't.
And faking an injury is simple pavlovian conditioning. They do something, get a reward, repeat for further reward, whether that's treats or grooming or something else.

My 4th cat is taking the company to the cleaners -- urinary problems since she was like 2 years old, which is really rare for a female cat. Pet insurance pays for 50% of her special prescription food and every time she has an emergency (which is easily like 2k each time) they pony up like 80% of the cost. When I was a kid/teen, my family had three cats. Around the same time we got the youngest one, the oldest stopped meowing. She would open her mouth to meow but nothing would come out. We took her to the vet and WITHOUT making us go through expensive tests, they told us that that's just how she was reacting to the new kitten. I guess they can temporarily lose their "voice" when they are stressed out.

Our dog slipped out of the house, darted into the street, and got hit by a car and thrown about 20 feet. She was stunned and blood was running out of her mouth. We thought we were going to have to have her put down. I tearfully cuddled her in the back seat as my husband drove us to the vet. By the time we got there Hildy was still bleeding from the mouth but was her usual perky self. Turns out she'd just bitten her tongue. We Weird-Al'd a song in her honor, to the tune of Paul Simon's "Stranded In a Limousine."
She was a dumb individual. She liked to chew on a bone. She was a naturally brain-dead dog that can't even use a phone.
Well, she barked one night at a traffic light, and when that light turned green
She was a dumb individual barking at a limousine.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, all the traffic on the street go swerving to the left, go swerving to the right, knocking Hildy off her feet.
I said, "Mamma, oh! Pappa, oh! See what I have seen! I seen a dumb individual run down by a limousine."
Everybody came running, said, "That dog's got no brains."
Everybody was gunning, they gonna shovel up the remains.
Then "Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof" said, Hildy, lifting up her head.
You can't kill a dog that's already brain dead.

Adopted a dog on May 24th this year. Found out on May 25th that she could see and recognize other dogs on TV. On May 26th, stopped TV movie that had several dogs in it to make $329 emergency trip to vet for dog sedation, induced vomiting and retrieval of most of a fluffy toy pig that was SENT HOME from shelter with her, along with 3 of the 10 squeakers sewn into the tail section. It seems that seeing other dogs makes her anxious, and she takes it out on her toys. On May 27th, was reviewing pictures on cell phone to save or delete - came across several taken in shelter of dogs we wanted to screen for adoption. Clearly written on the plexiglass in front of her kennel was "NO SOFT TOYS". Other than this, she is a gentle, kind wonderful dog!

5:32 I had a cat like that. In her younger years she would poo outside the litter box after having to stay at a cattery.
