  • In this video, England international player Charlotte Bardsley explains how to play a forehand counter topspin.
Here's a scenario. You push. Your opponent attacks first - looping the ball towards your forehand. What should you do? Up to a certain level, a lot of players will block. But instead of blocking, you could play a counter topspin instead.
In the video, Charlotte explains and demonstrates her technique. She makes it look very easy. Think of it as a "mini-topspin" - a shorter version of your usual topspin stroke. Get the timing right and the shot is hugely effective.

Absolutely a great video. She plays smart (choosing her shots well, great placement, and with force while maintaining control). Good to hear she will be doing more.

Great video. I love the reference to the "active-passive" strategy. For those of us who can't execute the elusive loop against backspin, these type of counter attacks help keep us in the game, especially the quick ones down the lines.

Great video as usual, love the little sound effects 😂
Amazing timing as I was exactly starting to work on this, this very week!
@TOM: I'm actually practicing your part of looping and counter-counter-attacking. Any tips there? Perhaps a follow-up video?

Charlotte's counter was coming at me very fast, so the ones I returned was using a similar shot - a short forehand counter topspin. When she attacked my backhand, I had no chance!

Very popular shot now , nice compact example, not sure you absorb to much spin while accelerating through the ball, bit confused there

Great video. Just one question: how tight should your grip be? I imagine a slightly softer grip is best but not too soft so that you lose control..

Doesn't matter that much but better tight than soft, I would say in the middle but leaning towards tight.
