Today, August 24, 2021 marks 49 years since this concert which catapulted Neil's s career to extreme heights wherein he sacrificed his privacy for us. It is my belief that Neil was compelled to continue on this path, for the unceasing need to deliver his messages in music was our gift. Thank you, Neil, for never destroying this precious art in a package which included his whole staff, musicians, arrangers and those such as Doug Vyner of this website who kept that day alive and carried it on for over five decades! Hi Donita, Thanks very much for revisiting this video today and for placing your kind comments and insightful observations; always most welcome and appreciated. Without a shadow of a doubt, Neil is a unique human being. One would be hard pressed to find another singer who has been so fiercely loyal not only to his fans, but also with his band, staff and all associated with the business that had Neil at its epicentre and the reason for its existence. The business model that Neil wisely adopted, a direct consequence of his caring nature, being that he, and all members of his band and others associated were paid employees. They remained employees instead of “blow-ins” on an as required basis. He offered them security of continuous employment. This security and loyalty was in return reciprocated as is evident in the creation of the imaginary “Diamondville”, a utopia for members of the Neil Diamond Corporation. I am able to confirm this, following exchanges with Rachel Charles, wife of the late Vince Charles the steel drum virtuoso in the Neil Diamond Band (1976-2001). I shall forever remain grateful to Neil for he has always been there in the various phases of my life and under all circumstances. Grateful and loyal.💎

Fifty (50) years!!! Happy Anniversary, to Neil and his band! The memories so ingrained with the written word and poses of still shots of this amazing entertainer. The details of the numbers of "tree people" who risked life and limb at 10:00 to be entertained by "one light that shines above others" at 10:08. Imagine, no seats were available for Neil's parents at his debut at 8:55. They just "walked around enjoying the sights and sounds". A befitting conclusion to this memorable video was the 60 Minutes "Reminiscence" and Neil's feelings during the "Prologue" at 13:00, he's "just enjoying the music, at 15:50, "I could do it again, surely", and that he did! Ending his interview, waving "Good bye, God bless, what an experience". Thank you, Doug, for capturing what a movie couldn't provide. Fantastic!

I’m now 76 years old. I used to say, living in Idaho, “Id give my right arm to watch and hear Neil Diamond in concert. I finally got my chance when he came to Salt Lake City back around 2004. What a stirring treat it was. I remember it like it was yesterday! Thanks Neil, for the gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving and giving and............! Thanks for your comment Hy. The Hot August Night series of concerts were never recorded. Had the show been videoed, the whole mystique would have vanished; extinguished, the show laid bare. I draw the similarities to reading a good book and then seeing the movie, which generally is a disappointment. Why? Simple, as one reads a book, it plays out in our mind; our imagination... no limits, unlike a movie. Hot August Night will forever LIVE in our memory banks... as we imagine what it must have been like. Another point worth noting, videos weren't a big thing back in the early 70s. Videos (VHS and Beta) only took off in the late 70s - early 80s. Bearing in mind that the first music video made its debut in 1984 (the low resolution back then, dreadful). I remember Neil stating in an interview that he believed that music videos were a passing fad, that they would soon come to pass. He had to be convinced, virtually dragged kicking and screaming, to do his first ever music video, 'Headed For The Future' in 1986. Therefore, understandable why filming Hot August Night simply wasn't even a consideration back in 1972. What an amazing intelligent talent he is, his musical awareness of composition is other worldly, his brain is definitely configured differently and allied to that glorious voice and perfect timing, he's left an indelible mark! A unique and prolific song writer who has left a wonderful body of work that I for one never tire of listening to.

I was born n 1960 and my parents and those of my friends all had Hot August Night. We were listening to Led Zep, Deep Purple etc., but often at the end of a night, when we were about done and there was a break in the music, a good buddy of mine would grow a beaming smile then might start to gently intone Hoooooollly Hooooly.... and that was a signal to treat ourselves to that great live album as our good night. That album reminds me of a lot of good times, with family, with friends and quiet nights alone. It's the kind of album that makes you feel you were there.

Neil has and always will be my absolutely favorite singer/ entertainer! Saw him in 1972 in San Diego for his first Hot August Night tour. Went to a lot more of his concerts after that and the last one was his 50 year Hot August Night tour in SLC! He is even more memorable now. Absolutely GREAT GREAT concert! A half century now of Grand Diamond Memories! 50 years! The Mystery of Neil Diamond's Band There is not much talk about Diamond's band members and/or session musicians over the years. I often find the musicality of Diamond's performances much more interesting than his own singing voice. The thing I like about Hot August Night, MCA, 1972, Greek theater, is the horn licks and what sounds like a rich Hammond B3 organ as well as ladies with background vocals and shaking tambourines as in Cherry Cherry. The organ gives the music a churchy devotional feel. Who plays the trumpets and other brass-winds for Neil in that concert? That wonderful electric organ? The lady backing vocals? He also has a nice string section.

What a psych...I thought this was actual footage of this momentous, spectacular, unreal, unearthly performance. The inspirational song writer, cool kat by his own right, Neil Diamond. Oh how I wish someone out there had footage of that epic night. To have experienced that concert must have been beyond it...DIG !!!!!! Neil Diamond, one of the truest gems of them all.

Hello Tony , That is both a very gracious and also very true statement of your's to make. It has been a shocker of a surprise to read some (too many) comments by some ' fans ' of Mr. Presley who very quickly take personal offence at anyone who does not see him as they do . HOT AUGUST NIGHT set a completely new standard in so many ways for both the presentation and recording of an artist and in Neil's example , songwriter in EXACTLY the correct place , at the correct time . I made my own pilgrimage to see , nay 'witness' Neil Diamond at The Greek Theatre for the last two concerts of his five-night stand to celebrate 40 years since the recording of HOT AUGUST NIGHT on the 24th August 1972. Serendipitously , those two concert dates were on the 23rd and 25th of August , 2012 ( !?! ) ... It was a 35 year dream, hope , wish come alive ... I still can't (at times) believe that I made it with the help of uberfan , Ian Graham of London , a ' Diamondhead ' with well over 350 Neil Diamond concerts to his name . Greetings from the UK .

The setting is so beautiful with the light on the trees on the hill. A great set of stills and then video of the great man himself some years later thinking back to the concert. You can see that he can remember very clearly what it was like and even remembers when different instruments come in at the opening of the concert. I really like the way that the woman who is interviewing him says very little and just allows Neil Diamond time and space to think back to what it was like. Also it's interesting to see at the beginning him standing beside a poster which shows that there were a few concerts. So the local folk lucky enough to attend had the choice between different hot August nights.

My mom was at The Greek , she said people were in the tree's watching the concert, it was so packed. I wanted to go so badly , but I was only 7. I love Neil Diamond, his music is such a part of my life.

This and Love at the Greek are such awesome albums. The intro for both of them give me goosebumps. I would spend my hot, humid summer nights in my room making sketches with my headphones on. When you live on a farm in Iowa, the summer temps are 90+ and the only air conditioning we had was open windows. Again, the humidity sucked. Listening to ND made me forget some of that. ND was my first real musical crush. I had no clue who he was or what he looked like, but when I heard Cracklin' Rosie the first time on mom's radio, I was hooked. All these years later I still love the man and his music.

@@NeilDiamondCentral No igloo although at the moment, it's 75F in the house and I'm thinking about another layer of clothing. I do better when it's 78-80F! As it gets closer to Christmas, I'm wishing for snow. Fresh flakes falling to the ground before the snow plows go for miles of highways and city streets, putting down chemicals to clear either snow or ice, and turning something so pretty into something dirty and dismal. As a consequence of conditioning, media, Christmas cards, etc. Christmas simply doesn't look/feel like Christmas here is Australia; not with the extreme temperatures we experience November to March. With the extreme heat one isn't exactly tempted to indulge in heavy meals. Diner perhaps, but lunch generally is a BBQ and salads. Guess reason why many Aussies celebrate Christmas in July. Ooooo! Your description of fresh snow flakes has transported me into a wonderful, winter wonderland, even though it at 1.30am it is 77F. However, the snow ploughs, the chemicals and the resultant outcome is rather off-putting! A concert that I didn't attend but has been an important song picture I keep close. In 1976 I was 14 years old and my very unhealthy family including me lived in Las Vegas. My older brother was ten years older and my closest sibling. He was diagnosed paranoid Sychophrenic. He took his life that year. This album was his favorite and I adopted it. Peace Canta Libre

Today, August 24, 2021 marks 49 years since this concert which catapulted Neil's s career to extreme heights wherein he sacrificed his privacy for us. It is my belief that Neil was compelled to continue on this path, for the unceasing need to deliver his messages in music was our gift. Thank you, Neil, for never destroying this precious art in a package which included his whole staff, musicians, arrangers and those such as Doug Vyner of this website who kept that day alive and carried it on for over five decades! Without a shadow of a doubt, Neil is a unique human being. One would be hard pressed to find another singer who has been so fiercely loyal not only to his fans, but also with his band, staff and all associated with the business that had Neil at its epicentre and the reason for its existence.
The business model that Neil wisely adopted, a direct consequence of his caring nature, being that he, and all members of his band and others associated were paid employees. They remained employees instead of “blow-ins” on an as required basis. He offered them security of continuous employment. This security and loyalty was in return reciprocated as is evident in the creation of the imaginary “Diamondville”, a utopia for members of the Neil Diamond Corporation. I am able to confirm this, following exchanges with Rachel Charles, wife of the late Vince Charles the steel drum virtuoso in the Neil Diamond Band (1976-2001).
I shall forever remain grateful to Neil for he has always been there in the various phases of my life and under all circumstances. Grateful and loyal.💎

Fifty (50) years!!! Happy Anniversary, to Neil and his band! The memories so ingrained with the written word and poses of still shots of this amazing entertainer. The details of the numbers of "tree people" who risked life and limb at 10:00 to be entertained by "one light that shines above others" at 10:08. Imagine, no seats were available for Neil's parents at his debut at 8:55. They just "walked around enjoying the sights and sounds". A befitting conclusion to this memorable video was the 60 Minutes "Reminiscence" and Neil's feelings during the "Prologue" at 13:00, he's "just enjoying the music, at 15:50, "I could do it again, surely", and that he did! Ending his interview, waving "Good bye, God bless, what an experience". Thank you, Doug, for capturing what a movie couldn't provide. Fantastic!

I’m now 76 years old. I used to say, living in Idaho, “Id give my right arm to watch and hear Neil Diamond in concert. I finally got my chance when he came to Salt Lake City back around 2004. What a stirring treat it was. I remember it like it was yesterday! Thanks Neil, for the gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving and giving and............! Yeah Neil... we all regret that you didn't film this. i envy the people who actually saw it. sounds like a one of a kind life changing event if there ever was one.
Thanks for your comment Hy. The Hot August Night series of concerts were never recorded. Had the show been videoed, the whole mystique would have vanished; extinguished, the show laid bare. I draw the similarities to reading a good book and then seeing the movie, which generally is a disappointment. Why? Simple, as one reads a book, it plays out in our mind; our imagination... no limits, unlike a movie. Hot August Night will forever LIVE in our memory banks... as we imagine what it must have been like.
Another point worth noting, videos weren't a big thing back in the early 70s. Videos (VHS and Beta) only took off in the late 70s - early 80s. Bearing in mind that the first music video made its debut in 1984 (the low resolution back then, dreadful). I remember Neil stating in an interview that he believed that music videos were a passing fad, that they would soon come to pass. He had to be convinced, virtually dragged kicking and screaming, to do his first ever music video, 'Headed For The Future' in 1986. Therefore, understandable why filming Hot August Night simply wasn't even a consideration back in 1972.

What an amazing intelligent talent he is, his musical awareness of composition is other worldly, his brain is definitely configured differently and allied to that glorious voice and perfect timing, he's left an indelible mark! Amazing that you actually met Neil and Katie, was that in a park in 2015. Would that have been in Los Angeles? I have seen images of Neil and Katie Central Park on April 11, 2016 in New York City.

I was born n 1960 and my parents and those of my friends all had Hot August Night. We were listening to Led Zep, Deep Purple etc., but often at the end of a night, when we were about done and there was a break in the music, a good buddy of mine would grow a beaming smile then might start to gently intone Hoooooollly Hooooly.... and that was a signal to treat ourselves to that great live album as our good night. That album reminds me of a lot of good times, with family, with friends and quiet nights alone. It's the kind of album that makes you feel you were there.

Neil has and always will be my absolutely favorite singer/ entertainer! Saw him in 1972 in San Diego for his first Hot August Night tour. Went to a lot more of his concerts after that and the last one was his 50 year Hot August Night tour in SLC! He is even more memorable now. Absolutely GREAT GREAT concert! The Mystery of Neil Diamond's Band
There is not much talk about Diamond's band members and/or session musicians over the years.
I often find the musicality of Diamond's performances much more interesting than his own singing voice.
The thing I like about Hot August Night, MCA, 1972, Greek theater, is the horn licks and what sounds like a rich Hammond B3 organ as well as ladies with background vocals and shaking tambourines as in Cherry Cherry. The organ gives the music a churchy devotional feel.
Who plays the trumpets and other brass-winds for Neil in that concert? That wonderful electric organ? The lady backing vocals? He also has a nice string section.

What a psych...I thought this was actual footage of this momentous, spectacular, unreal, unearthly performance. The inspirational song writer, cool kat by his own right, Neil Diamond. Oh how I wish someone out there had footage of that epic night. To have experienced that concert must have been beyond it...DIG !!!!!! Neil Diamond, one of the truest gems of them all.

Hello Tony , That is both a very gracious and also very true statement of your's to make. It has been a shocker of a surprise to read some (too many) comments by some ' fans ' of Mr. Presley who very quickly take personal offence at anyone who does not see him as they do . HOT AUGUST NIGHT set a completely new standard in so many ways for both the presentation and recording of an artist and in Neil's example , songwriter in EXACTLY the correct place , at the correct time . I made my own pilgrimage to see , nay 'witness' Neil Diamond at The Greek Theatre for the last two concerts of his five-night stand to celebrate 40 years since the recording of HOT AUGUST NIGHT on the 24th August 1972. Serendipitously , those two concert dates were on the 23rd and 25th of August , 2012 ( !?! ) ... It was a 35 year dream, hope , wish come alive ... I still can't (at times) believe that I made it with the help of uberfan , Ian Graham of London , a ' Diamondhead ' with well over 350 Neil Diamond concerts to his name . Greetings from the UK .

Neil Diamond isn't just a singer/performer but a songwriter as well, with a great body of work over 5 decades. The Hot August Night 1972 recording was a first ever for a live concert, it was recorded in high fidelity Quadrophonic sound. I take it you were in attendance at the Hot August Night lll (2012) concert which was recorded on video and audio. What a concert! And you were there. The setting is so beautiful with the light on the trees on the hill. A great set of stills and then video of the great man himself some years later thinking back to the concert. You can see that he can remember very clearly what it was like and even remembers when different instruments come in at the opening of the concert. I really like the way that the woman who is interviewing him says very little and just allows Neil Diamond time and space to think back to what it was like. Also it's interesting to see at the beginning him standing beside a poster which shows that there were a few concerts. So the local folk lucky enough to attend had the choice between different hot August nights.

The second version was basically the first version with the '60 Minutes - Extra Minutes' tagged on. Both, in my opinion failing to do justice to Neil and his history-making Hot August Night series of concerts. It has taken me 4 years of soul-searching for me to come to the conclusion that I had to ditch it; if only for my own sanity. This third attempt will stand.

My mom was at The Greek , she said people were in the tree's watching the concert, it was so packed. I wanted to go so badly , but I was only 7. I love Neil Diamond, his music is such a part of my life.

I updated that video 3 years later, however, not being satisfied that it in any way, did Neil justice, I uploaded this video last year. This is it.

This and Love at the Greek are such awesome albums. The intro for both of them give me goosebumps. I would spend my hot, humid summer nights in my room making sketches with my headphones on. When you live on a farm in Iowa, the summer temps are 90+ and the only air conditioning we had was open windows. Again, the humidity sucked. Listening to ND made me forget some of that. ND was my first real musical crush. I had no clue who he was or what he looked like, but when I heard Cracklin' Rosie the first time on mom's radio, I was hooked. All these years later I still love the man and his music.

I'm sort of laughing about your heat from November-March. Ours is mostly below 30, and when you add wind chill to the temp, especially in January, it feels more like Antarctica! @@NeilDiamondCentral No igloo although at the moment, it's 75F in the house and I'm thinking about another layer of clothing. I do better when it's 78-80F! As it gets closer to Christmas, I'm wishing for snow. Fresh flakes falling to the ground before the snow plows go for miles of highways and city streets, putting down chemicals to clear either snow or ice, and turning something so pretty into something dirty and dismal. I hope you have a merry Christmas Doug!! Keep these videos coming, I know I'm not the only one who is enjoying them!!

As a consequence of conditioning, media, Christmas cards, etc. Christmas simply doesn't look/feel like Christmas here is Australia; not with the extreme temperatures we experience November to March. With the extreme heat one isn't exactly tempted to indulge in heavy meals. Diner perhaps, but lunch generally is a BBQ and salads. Guess reason why many Aussies celebrate Christmas in July.
Ooooo! Your description of fresh snow flakes has transported me into a wonderful, winter wonderland, even though it at 1.30am it is 77F. However, the snow ploughs, the chemicals and the resultant outcome is rather off-putting!

A concert that I didn't attend but has been an important song picture I keep close. In 1976 I was 14 years old and my very unhealthy family including me lived in Las Vegas. My older brother was ten years older and my closest sibling. He was diagnosed paranoid Sychophrenic. He took his life that year. This album was his favorite and I adopted it. Peace Canta Libre
