"'I Am... I Said', took four months to complete. I knew it had great potential and I was unwilling to accept anything but the raw truth in the lyric. It was a daily battle to put this song and those sentiments on paper, but when it was done, it turned out the be one of the most satisfying songs I had ever written. It was nominated for a Grammy and still gives me chills when I perform it." - ND
THE CHAIR: The chair is a reference to the psychiatrist's chair. Diamond battled with this song for 4 months following a near-breakdown after divorce and a move from New York to Los Angeles.
His failure to land the part of Lenny Bruce in the movie ‘Lenny’, left him close to breaking point and Diamond was depressed. Diamond eventually took a 4-year sabbatical from performing after his landmark appearance at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in 1972.
'I Am... I Said' has a far deeper meaning than most casual listeners imagine. The song is a masterpiece by a great songwriter. By his own admission, Diamond spent months in psychotherapy and this song explains wonderfully his thoughts and feelings at the time. In Gestalt therapy, a patient projects his thoughts into an empty chair while a counsellor looks on making notes. This may well explain the meaning of the word chair. It is too easy to dismiss the 'chair' as a trite attempt to make a rhyme, but Diamond is nothing but meticulous in his lyric writing and he has said that 'I Am... I Said' underwent countless rewrites until it said exactly what he wanted it to say. Diamond no doubt felt so alone and alienated that he must have felt that no-one was listening to his tortured cries... not even the (psychoanalyst's) chair.

You just took me back to my teen years when I first bought this album and listened to it over and over. I absolutely melt when his voice cracked (wait for it) 'well except for the names and a few other "CHANGES", (3:11) if you talk about me'.....etc. It makes me feel like he is so vulnerable at that moment. On Love at the Greek, he cracks once on "I've been this way before", and that does the same thing to me. Neil Diamond will always be seen as a true artist. For the songs he writes, for the songs he sings, for the way he makes us FEEL with his songs.

Appreciate the fact that you possess such sensitivity as to be able to pick up the crack in Neil's voice as he sang "... well except for the names and a few other "CHANGES"._ There aren't many who have or would. We need to bear in mind that this amazing song which Neil took 4 months to write; 4 months of soul-searching (released March 1971), tearing off the scabs, was still fresh in his mind. This version is at its _purest..._ straight from the heart.

If you recall, he spoke after the burning opening numbers, explaining in a soft, contemplative and vulnerable voice about a promise he had made the year before (?) that they (he, the band and all the other musicians) would do things in those nights (there was more than one concert, of course) that the audience would not forget for awhile and that was "what we're about tonight, o.k." or words to that effect.
If I recall, he had revealed in a Rolling Stone interview that he was struggling through personal matters the whole year before these performances. He also mentioned, just a wee arrogantly, that he aspired not to be respected/remembered as say, Gershwin is but rather as Beethoven, Bach and other icons of music are 400+ years later. I think being as fundamental to American popular music as George G. is sufficiently aspirational.

This album always reminds me of being a kid in the late 70’s and into the early 80’s when mum and dad would have parties in summer. Dad would always put this album on. I knew it was going to be a great Sunday afternoon with friends and family and neighbours. Swimming in the pool, eating snacks, the bbq, people laughing and us kids in and out of the backyard and all over the street until well into the evening. Going home one by one as everyone left. Great times.
It was the original vinyl album and while dad is long gone now, I still have it and it’s one of my most treasured possessions ❤️

Every Friday/Saturday night with barbeques in full swing, the Hot August Night album would be heard blaring from massive speakers placed in patios in pretty much ever 2-3 houses.😊 As a consequence, it was reported that in Australia, one household in every three had this album. 29 weeks at #1 and 239 weeks in the charts in Australia! Sales, per capita, the highest in the world, which led Neil to remark... _"I think probably Australians have just a little more taste than most people."_

Listening to this all these years later. I'm 67 years old now, but i remember sitting on the front porch with the family one hot night and listening to this album. I was a teenager then. Loved it then and still love it now.

This is my favorite Neil Diamond song, by far. It continues to speak to me after all these years. Raised in Iowa, resident of Missouri for most of my adult life and now living in Texas, I can identify with this song.

That "crack" in Neil voice wasn't only when he was singing. We had the great good fortune to run into him in 1977 right before a concert in Kansas City MO. When we told him we had travelled from Chicago just for the concert, he responded "REALLY?"....voice cracked and I melted. He could not have been nicer!!💎💎❤

Neil has been my favorite since I was in junior high. Now, at 64, he still tops the list. I absolutely love his music, especially his old stuff but it’s all great. Thank you for the wonderful memories of years gone by.

The whole concert was a Master piece. Bands and artists of today don't know how to put together a concert of this magnitude today with an orchestra prelude, 1st half, intermission, second half, finale. You don't see or hear shows like this anymore

He just has a way of singing songs, his voice is excellent. I'm 62 and Neil Diamond wasn't anyone to me till late 90s. I saw a movie he acted in and the Coming to America was how it closed the movie. I was so touched by his voice and the words. It just resonated with me. I liked his songs ever since.

I grew up with my parents loving and playing him all the time. Some of my favorite nights were being in bed listening to him. Both my mom and dad are gone now. Every time I hear this song I think of them.

Back in 1971 I had a choice to make, I was 15 years old and could only afford to take my girlfriend to one concert. Elvis was coming to town and so was Neil. I choose Neil and was blown away then as I am now. When my soul needs soothing I turn to Neil to help pull me through. I got a chance to see Neil again in 1977 with my new girlfriend and future wife. We are still together today and Neil is part of the soundtrack of our lives. Thank You.

It is really hard to choose, but I Am, I Said is my favorite Neil Diamond song. I love comparing his different renditions, especially the endings, and this is one of his best. Your graphics really do help capture vicariously what it must have felt like at the concert. I always admire most the singer who performs his own music, and Neil Diamond is the best. There is a purity, an energy, an honesty, an integrity that one can't help but feel, and you have beautifully recreated the atmosphere.

It is a great song and sang with such sincerity, feeling and intensity as only Neil Diamond is able to. This song also relates to my life, having myself left for another shore. So glad that you feel that I have captured the atmosphere of those stunning Hot August Nights. I wasn't there so my imagination had carte blanche.
As the musical genius Lee Holdridge on the subject of Hot August Night later said, “Hot August Night was the big turning point, that magnetism that people think of with Neil Diamond was born on that night.” ua-cam.com/video/86SYuLiNcgs/v-deo.html Lee Holdridge incidentally, was the conductor of the Hot August Night concerts. He later conducted collaborated with Neil Diamond on the film score for 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull'. I believe we have a lot in common, I too am drawn to singer/songwriters. They are the source of their songs; they come from within;.straight from the heart and soul.

A pitty we never got this as a live peformance as a video, no matter what quality . I stll like to hear my LP, although I have the double CD 's too. One of the best performances in the last 50 years !!!!

I know how deep and powerful this song is. I’ve studied your life from a young man. I relate because music defines us. Your music, lyrics so forth are just as you said The story of my life. One of my regrets was not to make it to a Neil Diamond concert. Now he is retiring.
This song comes closer to my life than any other( while he was caught between two shores I was caught between north and 2 southern states). I loved this video, it’s my first time seeing it.
He is a great singer . I do hope he gets to enjoy some of his retirement. It’s possible. I retired 11 years ago. Enjoy Neil. You have made me and many, many ,many more very happy with your voice. Not everyone can say that when they retire.
