This is a Type 0 adapter: Purely physical without any function at all.
My thoughts exactly :)
I mean, it does have a function - it’s just the computer equivalent of Sheldon saying “So it’s a shelf?”
The m.2 to SATA is the type 1 portion.

Who else thought that "DDR4 RAM to M.2 SSD" means that you can use RAM as your system drive?
You actually can, just download app called "RAMDISK" it let's you use some space on RAM as normal sata storage
@@myangelomoi1091 I would prefer having all my ram available for other tasks. For example, preloading a game into a cheap, low-performance DIMM, and keeping the rest for actual gaming.
i was hoping for the other direction. Plug an NVME drive into a DDR4 slot and use it as slower system ram. a modern NVME drive is as fast as DDR2 and slow DDR3. but it would mean you could have upwards of 2TB of ram. (yes, on linux anyways you could just set the NVME drive up as swap and have at it).
@@AndrewFrink No be honest windows already uses page file when ram usage is full, so it's already using SSD like RAM. So i don't think there would be any benefit using ssd via ram interface

I was more hoping for the possibility to add a RAM stick to my m2 port, as a physical ram drive.
You can use SoftPerfect RAM Disk for that. It's not reliable for long time use due to the volatile nature of RAM but it's fun to mess around with and see the speed RAM would have as a storage drive.

Yeah, I actually don't think it's a bad idea, if you have spare RAM slots and want to add some m.2s it may be a nice way to organize it. Why not.
@Joel Felipelli True. Well then if you have a bunch of m2 laying around with no use :D
as Linus said you can tape this adapter to somewhere in your computer. This RAM slot do nothing. And if you use standard m2 sata you cant slow down becouse this is sata technology not nvme.

I learned something about computers from this - you have to plug them in! This could make a BIG difference. Thanks, Linus.
To this day this still shows up from time to time on my feed, and i just laugh.
Love these reviews. Really educational along the way.
I can see the usefulness of it as a spare mounting location for a drive in low profile cases where filling the RAM is not necessary. It is pretty silly, though, even with an extreme scenario.
Niche product being sold outside that niche. Sad. Likely its engineers and marketers don't speak the same language.
So basically this product is aimed at someone who bought a M.2 SATA/AHCI drive and screwed up with the motherboard, taking one that only accepts NVMe or one that doesn't have an M.2 slot at all.
Because otherwise if you want a Sata SSD connected to a Sata port on the MB you would juste buy a Sata one in the first place ... I mean they are even a little bit cheaper.
Or it could be that you just got an M.2 Sata SSD from someone or another build but don't have the hardware to use it, like the So-DIMM to regular-DIMM Ram adapters. But even that was more interesting !
Still, it's nice to know if we're ever in need of such a thing, it actually exists and can be ordered on aliexpress.
yes but they make pci-e adaptor cards, so you don't have to deal with the stupid cables. so ??? what's the point, you'll never need something like this. even if you did, like on a itx case, there isn't a place for it, given 2 memory slots. it's a really bad idea.
@@BloodSprite-tan I think most PCIe adaptors would be for NVMe drives, but there sure will be some for sata ones. But even though it can be useful for someone somewhere someday, it's not stupid as it works the way it's intended to. If you don't need it just don't buy it, I never said everyone should have one just in case, I said if you're ever in need of something like that it's reassuring to know that it exists.
@@GervasitorSpaceman67 i got a very cheap PCIe m.2 adapter, it has a slot for an NVMe M.2 AND a sata M.2. both slots are functional. cost was $8.99 at the time.
@@TheOrganicartist Well I'm glad this works for you ! Again, I'm not saying that a lot of people would actually need this, as there are lots and lots of other solutions that you would think of before that, including your PCIe adapter.
I'm just saying that it's nice to see it exists, because if you need a M.2 AHCI to regular SATA adapter and don't want to use another expansion slot, you can. you might not even use it in a ram slot, after all it's just a solution they found so that it would actually be attached to your computer. And I can see that it can be misleading to some people, but hey, if you see some weird shit on aliexpress, just send the link to Linus Tech Tips before buying it, and if they run out of topics to cover they will be glad that you found it !

So, basically: Instead of just installing an ssd on your mobo, you throw out
a perfectly wonderfull slot for memory storage capabillity,
just to convert it to a mounting bracket.
I think its for the peopel that dont need as much ram but want an m.2 even if they have no slot.
@@zgee64 But why does it need to take up a DIMM slot? Why not just make an adaptor that plugs straight into the SATA port?
@@nathangamble125 i think maybe the speed.
Fynn Heinemann An M.2 SATA drive would be no faster than a 2.5” SATA drive if the performance of each drive is the same. They will both be capped by the SATA bus speeds. I see no logical use case for this considering how small and easy to mount 2.5” SATA ssds are
do they never hear of nvmd ssd? would work better..

Is this just a way to mount an m.2 to your motherboard if you don't have a built in mounting point?
Yep with gold plated pins....
This style adapter is being used in a special DIMM style slot in upcoming server hardware with one M.2 slot on each side (except it actively uses the slot for the connection). First time I saw it a few weeks ago I was confused :)
As soon as you showed that I knew exactly what that was. Since I had bought a m.2 puce adapter that was the same. It did jack all. You still hooked up a sata cable
The manufacturer should have at least provided a "bypass" allowing a real ram to be installed above the product and have it pass thru right to the DDR4 pins on the motherboard, that way, it would have made sense to keep that adapter securely in place within the DDR4 serving as an anchor. As it is, I would much rather tape it to the side of the case inside.

@@beanboy9029 Haha don't worry, my wife wouldn't dare giving me the option.
That segway was slick though.
Well this will so useful for old m/b without m. 2 slot
Imagine the otherway around.
M.2 adapter that takes DDR4.
Sure on power loss, you lose data but it will be fast, and maybe you can use a CR2032 battery to keep the memory active.
There are already better solutions for this. RAMdrives exist.
IIGrayfoxII they actually have what you’re talking about and you could probably do it with the hardware you have at home! google “ram disk”
That was pretty much what I thought I'd be seeing after reading the title. I was wondering why anyone would want to switch from using a reasonably expensive (£ per Gb) M2 ssd to a ridiculously expensive DDR4 based alternative ?
those sexy access times tho
That's what I was thinking. But actually a simpler and faster solution is to emulate a harddrive in your memory. I've tried it and I got some incredibly high numbers in Crystaldiskmark, don't remember the numbers but it was nutty coming from my cheap computer. Why do this if you lose everything on power loss? Just create an image of your most used basically read only applications and have them set to save any new files to another drive, upon bootup have the hdd emulation software transfer that image to your RAM, invest the time first and then you get very high speeds for as long as your computer is on.
The types of adaptor are as follows:
Passive:
Physical - Conforms the shape
Electrical - pins in to pins out
Active: Performs signal processing.
I want to see an M.2 to DDR4 adaptor.
Bring back the DIMMdrive!
I want to see SSD used as RAM just cause.... Lol
Ik it would be slower but idc just want to see it.
Oh gosh I wasn’t expecting this Segway. You have outdone yourself Linus.
I think its pretty neat. It secures your m.2 to your mb. Its cheap as chips and allows to to connect m.2 drives. Obviously won't get the same speeds but its about space and being on the mb it works.
Linus trying to expand a 1 min video to a 11 min video
Hey, it should be the other way around, like a device with multiple RAM slots, that would work as superduperfast undestructable (in number of rewrites) SSD drive, and with some small backup li-poly battery, it might be actually usefull!!!
he has a vid about this exact idea. i dont remember the name but it was 4gb of ddr1 ram as a sata drive
Thanks for the education.
I was really hoping this would be a way to add like 1tb of slow ram to a device. Not sure what that would be useful for, but it seems fun.
I can see an idea for this thing concerning an "ITX in a micro case" build. Especially if the board has 4 DIMM slots, and you are only going to use 2 of them for RAM.
It didnt work because the adapter wasn't RGB

@@alphao_o975 good one
Honestly i was hoping that the computer would recognise it as a high-cap ram stick. Could've been a huge upgrading tool if it was. But even if it's basically just a placeholder, it could still work as a nice M.2 test setup. I don't suppose it is in its current state, but maybe there could be some hotswapping functionality added? even if just software-wise?
