I saw on ebay that one of those 28 core xeon cpus go for about $9,000. So you account for the ram he installed and the motherboard, GPU, and everything, you are probably looking at about at least $30,000 there, and most likely, the average PC user is not going to get much more performance from a 28-core cpu than they would with a Quad to 6-core cpu since most programs still only use maybe 2 to 4 cores at most at a time. Rather than the number of cores, I think the performance of each single core is probably more important.
Not gonna lie.....this is probably my fav video from LTT in a LOOOONG time more content like this please....with Linus & Co triyng to figure out new tech....and getting stuff to work.
Yo Linus! When you mentioned "First Boot" before it does the "Proper Bootup" around 12 minutes in, this is common on Server and workstation boards with IPMI / BMC's installed, and this is because the IPMI / BMC will initialise itself before the rest of the system is allowed to boot, and this usually means the system will act like its doing nothing for a while then suddenly springs to life, or it will post right away but then wait for the IPMI, Reset, and then go at it again before continuing. I have witness both types of behaviour on my Workstation, Home Server, and Home Lab servers, which are a mix of IBM and Supermicro machines. Basically if you have a machine with an IPMI / BMC, you should apply power to the system, then you have 2 options, you can either leave it in "off" but power connected for a few minutes to give the BMC time to start up, or you power on right away, and then wait for the BMC to start up while the machine does basically nothing in the mean time but make noise. On my IBM servers i prefer to leave them "off" with the power plugged in and "on at the wall", because there is no fan control until the BMC has started up, so turning them on right away just means having to listen to 100% fans for about 2 minutes while the machine waits for the BMC, whereas if i wait first for a few minutes, then the machine is quiet and POST's right away as the BMC is already booted and running. On the IBM's you can tell when the BMC is booted up by watching the blink rate of the power button LED, Fast flashing is power applied but BMC not ready, and when it changes to a slow blink rate, the BMC is ready and nows the time to turn the machine on.
This is what happens when clueless people build server machines and buy parts from eBay. They ruin other peoples CPUs and blame it on the seller. One of the worst type of customers are those that buy without knowing they have compatible parts. Like honestly trying to boot it up by holding the cpu in place? I'm sure no one here wants to sell to a buyer who is going to validate a cpu by holding it place then return it if it doesnt work.
This is the type of customer every seller fears. Doing all sorts of very ill-advised things to a CPU and then going "uh, your chip doesn't work dude". You're not being scammed. Returning a chip after that is being the scammer.

So here's an intresting story. I worked at Intel for a few months as a mechanical tester and I immediately recognized those SKX and KNL Foxconn brackets. I must of went through thousands of them because it was a concern for Intel that after many cycles of taking off and putting on those heatsinks, there would be tiny bits of debris leftover. Obviously bad when we're talking about CPU sockets. All of the screws (and fasteners) had this special coating called (fumio?) on them that is supposed to capture the debris. You'll notice they have this golden-like color to them. Anyway, yes, the heatsinks seemed proprietary, but nothing too special, a metal block with a medium sized square copper heatsink. Had a box of hundreds of them. In fact for testing we just used a thin aluminum plate which indeed held the CPU in place. The large spikes coming out of the bracket are intended such that you can't possibly put it on wrong, can align it rather quickly and deals with the small bit of torque you get with bolting something down.
Aw MAN Ok I saw that Coolermaster briefly at work too! Opened it up all the way and the coolest thing about it was the wicked design they came up with in the copper plate for supposedly better heat transfer. Linus. I used to work extensively with loose chips at a testing company. A large chip with a ball grid like that needs to have even pressure, not necessarily high pressure. If only a few contacts were not getting a good connection you could have many issues, or even damage the chip. A good socket will have even pressure over the entire chip, or at least the areas with contacts. You may not have been spreading the pressure over everything.
@ a few bucks, huh? Hahahah, that's funny...watching a video called "56 core system" from my laptop...with 2 physical cores.
I'm gonna go cry a bit, see ya next time...
Lolled9991 Damn, the laptop I used in college from a decade ago had a Turion as well... She got the job done and never let me down even with Vista. Had a weak AF Radeon GPU though, could barely play TF2...
My LG V30 has more cores than your laptop
Luckas Caldas fair, but can it run Crysis?
I3 master race
I feel ya, man. My laptop has a quad core but it's one of those weak AMD Puma ones so it'll lose benchmarks to a high end Core 2 Duo.
*threadripper laughs in 128 cores*
@a mad man with a box he meant dual threadrippers to that mobo
Can we at least acknowledge the amazing background music that perfectly fits with the video. Reminded me of old school cartoon sketches.
Ernesto Alfonso im pretty sure me n you are the only people old enough here to know what those are. also if i recall techincally the music was often later added as there were silent cartoons at first. so another thing no one else but us old folks here kno
Ernesto Alfonso true
HucErnesto Alfonso
Linus sniffing cocaine at 2:36 "Ahhh it's good stuff..." ... ha-ha-ha.. jk
That's a nice TV what size is it
"if this turns on, I'm gonna be turned on"- Linus's best quote of the year
why the fuck would you want a boned up skinny nerd ? I couldn't think of anything more offensive...unless you are an equally horny skinny female nerd...
psycronizer what?, I have no idea what you're trying to say? Unless it's some kind of joke then you failed miserably.
if that escapes you then yes you are right, you really do have no idea...go back to sleep.
psycronizer Just get turned off
Linus single handedly causing the ram shortage.
one of the few times not due to cryptocurrency miners
what are you talking about? he clearly used both hands!
Theres no ram shortage due to cryptocurrency miners... ever
no, im referring to the prices of GPU's theyve went sky high lol
Speaking of which, any clue when that will end? I need some more by June and I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and pay the big bucks now.
I'm not the most cautious person with my hardware... but then there is Linus xD
$8-10K now. 10 years from now it would be a paper weight on someone desk.
@@MarcRitzMD I just bought three entire servers with dual E5649 xeons for 210€ shipped halfway across Europe. Each of the CPUs alone was $777 when new, and I don't even wanna know how much Intel was charging for the motherboard and chassis lol.
AMD is pushing that reality along a lot faster than scheduled.
No, $8-10k now, $50 clearance sale 10 years from now.
Marc Ritz Same here. I bought a set of two X5790 Xeons from a decade ago for $100. And my Mac Pro flies in new heights. Cool!
The point of these cpus is they're for... Work. Like, computing figures, rendering, running servers etc where the outgoing cost directly increases workload and efficiency and gives greater output, they make money for you as long as you actually benefit from them.
That was solid AF for that guy to accept the return.
Yeah not like the CPU was used as intended! The Yum Cha didn't watch the vid!
Or he did watch the vid and figured its not worth looking bad in front of thousands of viewers.
bongers43 well he has too
It's the law and eBay's policy
i was thinking the same a tech seller trying to rip off a giant like linus can be certain doom
2:18 *If it Turns on, I'm gonna be turned on!* Quote of the Year for PC building enthusiasts, you win 9001 internets!
(Seriously tho, who doesn't feel EXACTLY that way when a brand new expensive build is put together, and still needs to be booted up?)
11:05 Another truth for PC Builders, "Do your hands ever get sweaty when your working with expensive stuff? Mine do." Again, exactly what happens to me!
linus is spitting the truths like there's no tomorrow on this one! hahah
I love how excited Linus is about everything in the beginning
I wonder what he tought to himself while buying it
"hmm its a cpu that does not exist... what can go wrong"
I asked myself the same question, like wtf?!
Simple, "Ill make more money from the video anyways"
You sir, are single handedly responsible for the extreme ram prices.
"I need a graphics card" .. me too Linus, me too. sigh
gee Linus, if only you had, say, a 13-GPU bitcoin mining shitbox you could scalp a card off of
my graphics card is a gtx 120 so stop complaining
GT 120* there is no such thing as a GTX 120... at least i dont think so
Yes, there is
GT 210 is worse, yet more common sadly. (GT 120 is an OEM card btw)
6:09 captions: screams like a goat
Seller won't give no information, people saying that listing is sketchy and Linus buys it anyway. Linus I have a bridge in New York I'll sell you
LTT: the single reason for Ram prices to go up
10:45 Just for your information, those screws can be clamped down like equivalent of a 200 kgs just by using a few Nm to torque them... :)
9:30 - just opens a box of cpus worth more than my car. Each one of those chips are 10k btw
Yeah. He says that. In the video.
well the slightly lower end ones are probably a lil less but 10k+10K plus the others.
**Gets gifted chips worth 40k**
"damn 2600 dollars down the drain from my company" (no taxes...)
Right, but those chips depreciate much faster. We'll see in five years.
And that's how he moans
6:57 The Motherboard is telling you to execute Order 66.
I think that Linus might single handedly be responsible for the ram shortage
Linus doing everything he can to entertain us. it's just amazing😊
Something makes me think that LMG is completely responsible for RAM price inflation
and now trump is responsible for GPU inflation thanks to his tariffs..
@@raidermaxx2324 Why is politics needed. Tariffs won't do shit except raise the price by a few bucks
@ a few bucks, huh? You sure about that? and lets just say its $10.00 doesnt seem like alot, but because of trump ive also lost my health insurance, NEVER got the tax Break he promised, since only the rich elites got that, and wages are still shit. And the cost of living is fucked. Also, we all had to give Trumptard farmers in rural america, a 20 billion cash infusion, because Trump had to pay them off, since his tariffs fucked them over so bad. Se we basically had to pay trump supporters to keep supporting trump. So that money didnt go to anything that helps me or my family. And now, we find out his tariffs which are totally unecessary and counter productive, are making shit that we enjoy, as a hobby. more fucking expensive. So its fucking relevant. Thats why politics are needed, amigo.
@@raidermaxx2324 That has nothing to do with gpu prices.
1) obamacare sucked ass.
2) that's simply false. "only riches and elites" did not get it. do your research.
3) cost of living isn't on trump
4) so? smaller farmers (relative, not SMALL) do need help...
5) no you didnt have to pay trump supporters to keep supporting trump, that's false.
6) sure, maybe it sucks to be you - it didnt help you directly. But it may have helped america as a whole... So suck it up buttercup... YOU individually dont matter. it's how it helps people as a whole.
7) politics aren't needed. you're clearly lacking in basic knowledge about how any of this works (prices, gpu prices specifically, politics) so keep it to yourself kiddo
@@raidermaxx2324 "nymag" means absolutely nothing. Choose something bigger / more credible. Also, you have a problem. Stop being a genuine asshole for no reason to other people on the internet that are just trying to have a normal, civil conversation with you. It's an atrocious, massive problem that many people on the left seem to have - you are one of them, it seems. chill out, and learn to have a civil convo. your life will be better for it.
"If it turns on, I'm gonna be turned on." - Linus, 2018
I do believe there is more money worth of hardware on that work bench than what my car is worth lol. Good stuff.
WOW this is weird, looking at Linus with no beard again!! I've been watching LTT for 6, 7 years or so, I've seen pre-beard Linus before plenty but I actually forgot how different he looks, the beard is so much better
You and me both bud
oh wait, I need a graphics card
*grabs 1080ti
KAYRUNJAAVICE just the first one he found on the spot 🤣
I give you job in my cafe, you good at frying chips

Also Linus "that's good stuff"
linus: i need *a* graphics card.
*gets handed a gtx 1080 (or titan)*
Secant Ogive fuckin hell give me one
Can I have two of your door stops? My dog keeps pushing my doors (bathroom and bedroom) open.
but for real, I like your name, I never thought I'd see a reference to my statistics class on a non-math forum!
We are talking about Linus who is using 8k reds for a target platform which has a video quality below a good 1080p output, because of the low bitrate and codec on 4k. ^_^
Contester was thinking the same exact thing😂
He gets a 1080 Ti. I get... maybe a Radeon R9
....those 8180s are $10,000 processors.....mother of god
Av Boden ... Linus Tech Tips 😂
linus money spending tips
Well when you have to compute all the things...
I wonder if AF was "air flow".... I've worked on sever boards that won't even power on if the fans aren't detected.
you can easily fake this by just literally plugging in the headers without the fan actually cooling anything. Most boards will not post without detection of fans through these headers.
Jan Ryan yes. in my case, unfortunately, the board used a 5 pink fan header. I ended up splitting old header extensions to use as jumpers with the standard 4 pin ground. Worked just fine.
"5 pin" not "5 pink"
Maybe, but it booted fine with the other chips so I sorta think it's something else.
HellishGrin460 0
saying "no" and the system is actually working gave me a weird feeling lol
Yup
Linus is responsible for the ram shortages around the world
Here in Norway there has been no RAM shortage or increase in RAM prises at all for the last 3 years (and possible longer). It seems to me thees RAM price troubles is a overseas problem only?
linus is single Handedly the reason for the ram shortage.
Hi, Linus. The problem is that Asus motherboard don't have intel microcode for ES and OEM(p-8136 for example) scalable series. You need to modify bios or ask Asus to modify it.
The only one motherboard series that have all microcodes is the Tyan motherboards.
Yeah it helps if he or his team does their research :)
I remember when dual core was great and quad2duo and core2quad was perfect for a webhosting server 😂

Dear friend, please understand.
Cant even give a buyer a legit cpu
but he accepted the return
Worldwide RAM shortage, Linus just buys em all.
Linus the type of guy to use two iphone boxes as a CPU cooler
This video probably has the best Out of context clips.

Technically he is holding money, these are worth lots of money
