Perhaps the biggest thing not mentioned in the video is the brake light function! Rear light has a functional brake light!

I just installed this on my ebike 2 days ago. The turn signals are junk. But I did not buy it for the turn signals, I bought it just for the brake light. I absolutely love it. The headlight is brighter than the headlight that came with my bafang kit and I love it too. I used the license plate as a mounting bracket…I used a torch to heat it and bend it so it would fit perfectly. Again, I freaking love this thing. The brake light is bright, the horn works really good. I paid $62 shipped off eBay. Game changer if you are looking for a plug and play brake light. The brake light works even when the headlight/lights are off.

Sorry for silly question but the brake light engages when you pull brake lever or is it just a rear light?

    • @Todd66
      @Todd66 2 роки тому +2

@@helphelpimbeingrepressed9347 no worries, yes when you pull either brake lever, the brake light lights up. The “tail light” is only on when you turn the headlight on and the brake light works then also. It functions as it should. I’ve rode several times since my last post and I’m still stoked. I love this light set up. The horn was a surprise bonus for me.
Don’t hesitate to ask more questions. Have a great week.

Couldn't find my previous comments about lighting sets. Anyway I have the hub version of this on my converted hub e-bike and will have the mid drive version on my newer one. I actually already have the same light set in this video but it's not hooked up because I don't have my mid drive system up and running. Mid drive system motivated by you because you always mention how much better they are than hub motors. We had to cut the wires on the hub version on both the light set and the controller box to make it work. The brake lights don't work but that's okay. Turn signals do and the bell is great. My seller sent me a handlebar clamp for the front light because I still don't know how it would go on without one.
Oh god yes about mirrors. I have them on both sides but use the left one way more. I would never ride on the road without them, especially in Orlando. Traffic is crazy.

I added a headlight and tailight wired in parallel to the 6v spade connectors. Plenty bright. As much as I'd like turn signals, I don't really have room for another control that needs to be near the grips. My 500C controls the lights with a long press of the + button.

The Bafang display has a switch to turn lights on and off. I have an EggRider display for the Bafang and it has a light control as well. That could eliminate the need for a separate control, but it would be used to power a relay. I don't think this kit would work that way from what is described. There are a couple switched terminals under all the potting in the controller and I've been meaning to build something. Those connections are low power to would need to be used to power the relay, well actually a transistor. So far it hasn't gotten done due to lack of time or weather and likely won't as I'm moving the components to another frame and will just go with a battery tail/brake light with an accelerometer on it to light the brake light when it slows down quickly and a battery powered headlight.

I added one of these Lighting Kits to my Performer X Recumbent Trike. I had to extend the harness coming from the light to fit my trike. I have not had the chance to try it at night but I am impressed! I turned off the lights in my work shed and had the lights on and they are quite bright. The turn signals could be a bit brighter. The Tail/Stop light shows up good.
horn is loud enough. I like having the Stop Light coming on when the brakes are applied. Over all a good buy and I recommend it for your Bike or Trike.

Nice. I'm a bit surprised that this is a new thing. Glad that somebody did it.
I've been using bright lights on my bike since before LED lights existed. I used a huge generator and just leg power to drive it. LED lights make it so much easier to have good lighting, and operating off the already-huge-and-expensive main battery of an e-bike seems... obvious.
Thanks for reviewing (and carrying) this system.

I have been commuting on my mid drive ebike with the home trip in the dark and have had to build my own setup with headlight, front and rear turn signals, and working brake and tail lights. Cars treat you different when you have a full setup of lights especially when you have good bright and visible turn signals. I would love for someone to put together a easy to install prewired setup similar to this one with all the components. This comes close but it falls short on the turn signal department and those have the largest impact of all my lights.

    • @brianbassett4379

Why would anyone ever want to use the power in the main battery for light? It's by far the most important charge. Get a dynamo hub... you will have lights and the ability to charge a large USB battery bank while riding.

It’s a great kit I installed mine last summer and it works great , don’t forget it also has brake light . The signal lights show much better when the tailight isn’t illuminated. What I did was added bullet style tail lights and another front headlight that way during the day my signal lights are visible and I have the other headlight running . I also added the same style to the front so I have front and rear signal lights .

I put them on all my
    e-bikes as standard.
    Especially the ebike's I sell
But I use a smaller back brake light.
On the back of the seat wire going through the tube.
I modify it so has the ground wire works for the brake cut off on & off.
And I wire the back light to the screen switch.
so it can be turned on & off separate from the headlight.

Always love nice early Saturday morning upload. Last summer you inspired me to build a bike even though I was flat broke but had knee surgery so it was either a Ebike... or no bike!
I might have a video of it on my channel.
I know you hate Hub Motors but I got a geared Bafang front hub, even came w new schwalbe marathon tire & a brake caliper for 40 ish bucks..got an eBay controller for 20 something..cheap throttle..and used my mowers 40v 5AH ( lol) battery. My friend wanted a new Walmart bike ,so gave me their Diamondback for free., so I slapped it all on that thing. It was low entry which was perfect for a guy that just had knee surgery. Worked up pretty good it would top out about 24 miles an hour. Could go 12-15 miles with alot of peddling. 8 being lazy.

The brake light function goes away if you install upgraded hydraulic brakes. I had this light set on my mechanical brakes and it was awesome for having functioning brake lights on a bike. Then I switched to the new Magura MT5e hydraulic brakes with the red julet cable instead of yellow so I bought the adapter for red to yellow and now the brake light function doesn't work. that was my favorite part of the setup and now it doesn't work so I've since taken the whole system off and went with small removable, rechargeable lights instead for a cleaner and lighter setup. I wish there was another way to have function of the brake light with the Magura brakes but one cable is two prong the other is three so I'm assuming that's why the brake light function went away when I installed the new adapter and brake set. The Magura MT5e set is an amazing game changer so they have to stay and also have to get more for my other bikes now.

It seems that the red to yellow adapter is expecting a different set of pins. I ended up buying yellow and red extension cables and splicing them together myself with some solder and shrink wrap. With the yellow cable plugged in and the wires stripped, you'll find that shorting one pair results in the brake lights coming on but no brake indicator on the display while shorting another pair works for both. If you connect that pair to the two wires of the red connector, the switch will bridge the correct wires and things will work.

I ran into an issue with this light set (bought on Amazon) and wanted to share a workaround. When I turn on the lights with the display on, the throttle engaged and the back wheel spins. The display showed around 100 watts. Dangerous, I know! If I turn off the lights, no apparent throttle. The workaround was to change the start voltage of the throttle handle from 1.1 volts to 1.6 volts. I hardly noticed any difference in the throttle response and the issue went away. Strange, but true!

Hi Johnny, do you have any experience with Truckrun motors? It seems these would work well with those, they have very similar components, but since you only recommend them for Bafang I wanted to see what you think.

I ordered these lights 1 week ago, I expect they will come from China in a month. Unfortunately, by then I will no longer need them for this winter season because until they come the day will be 30-40 minutes longer and I will not need them but I will be ready for the next one. The built-in 6 volts are good but extremely insufficient. However, I think I'll keep the built-in 6 volts because they are automatic and are perfect for going through darker enclosed spaces. The turn signals are meaningless, they must be something separately placed both 2 in front and 2 at the back on both sides of the frame then it will make sense. Although legally in most countries they are illegal and you still have to signal by hand.

You didn't mention it in the video, but the rear light should light up a little more when the brake is applied - like a stop light. I can't wait for mine to come.

Hey johnny, i know you hate folding bikes, but in the summer i take a boat to work every day and they make you buy a ticket for your bike, unless its a folding bike.. I am currently looking at the Citizen London as it seems to check all my boxes, but id love to get a custom built one with a middrive if you have any thoughts, i would like it to be 50 pounds or less all in

I know your thing is selling stuff for a profit and all, but why are you recommending that riders use power out of their main battery when 99% of the time that battery is too small even for its intended purpose? Batteries are the most expensive component on most ebikes and they are considered expendable. With that fact in mind treating them right can save thousands of dollars over a few years. Fully charging a lithium pack and burning it down to a minimal charge repeatedly cuts their effective life by 2/3rd. Some figures say the difference between 500 recharge cycles and 1200+. So riders that want to get the most for their money are (or should be) only using 65% capacity of the pack... charge to 85% don't deplete past 20%. And, you recommend using that power for lights? You sell horns too? Recommendations made specifically for personal profit, you should have been a plastic surgeon, Mr. Out.

Yo, this light is amazing. I know you have your issues with me :) but bury it for a minute and try these light kits! Buy it from BroncoBikes so you don't have throw me any business :)
FYI they are LED bulbs so they draw next to nothing, probably last 2 full days off a 52v 14ah battery running nonstop. You are correct about battery lifespan and draining though. Like all lithiums, they like to be kept between 30-80% charged for max life span.
These lights and horns are EASILY worth 5 watts its draws. (you find out how long your battery will power your lights by dividing that by the wh rating of your battery.
If you are a Bafang rider, these are the lights you've been wondering why they havent been invented yet.

@@JohnnyNerdOut It's not just you, dude... it's anyone using YT as a part-time job recommending any piece of crap they can get people to buy. Do you ever recommend anything that you do profit off? The difference for me is that I don't carry my bike somewhere on the back of my car to ride, or ride around the house for an hour or two at a time... although I have been doing that very thing a lot for a few months now. If you don't have access to A/C every night you look at ebiking in a different light... pun intended. I use a Schmidt SON dynamo hub and a great light, an Edelux II, then back that light up with a Lumina 1800 Dual-beam light that can be mounted on the bike or my helmet and used as a flashlight off the bike. A dynamo hub lets me have a headlight at all times and I can keep every piece of USB electronics I carry charged without access to A/C. The only time I use my lithium pack for anything other than moving the bike is when my solar panel is deployed and I want to heat water using a 12V glow-plug.

Using the power in the ebike battery for anything other than turning the motor is the same as siphoning gas out of your car to start a campfire. How much do you actually ride?
I disagree with you on most topics and question your integrity in recommending something for a profit... like an electric bike horn. I know for a fact that you have given poor advice to people trying to score YT hits and spare change. But, hey, if people are willing to take the advice of someone trying to sell them something then P.T. Barnum was right. Maybe you should look into snake oil.
