Secret Belgian Binding

- The book created using the Secret Belgian binding technique has the advantage of lying flat when open, but one of the coolest things about this particular binding is the way that you can fold either cover all the way back. This binding method is sometimes called crisscross binding.
Here is a great source for the bookboard, or binder's board, mentioned in the video. You can get it in several different thicknesses.

If you're tired of cutting bookboard by hand (particularly the thicker bookboard used for making boxes and slipcases) this inexpensive guillotine works wonderfully and is a real time and hand-saver.

(The pack is a very odd combination of designs - mostly geometrics and metallics with just a few of the cactus pages. I used those up pretty quickly and wished I had more.)

@@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks Hello again. So I decided to have 9 sets of holes, instead of your 8 (on the cover). It made following your directions creative, to say the least. 😌 So I was wondering how you'd go about attaching the pages to the cover when you have an odd number of stitches across said cover? Would you start on the inside of each booklet? ... 🤔
Umm, yeah. :) So, one day I thought "Well, the binding doesn't seem dependent on the number of holes, so I'll make one with an odd number." Those covers are still sitting in my studio, an example of a failed experiment. I probably should have made a bigger deal of saying that you need an even number of holes in the video, because it really does matter. If you do figure out a solution (I didn't) please let me know. :)
@@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks I'm not sure it's the best solution, but it's what I figured kinda worked- So what I loved about your method was that the pages would be sewn onto two stitches on the board. This made the sewing faster and I wouldn't use as much thread. Boom!!! Done and onto the next. In my odd number problem, I think you have to start by looping the thread on the top stitch (or make a knot) and pull out the first hole on the inside of your paper stack. Go down and out the second hole and loop around the second stitch on the covers. Continue looping around the stitches for every hole. For the last hole you loop around the stitch and go into the next set of pages in the first hole. From there go down and out and loop individually. I hope this was useful, as your video was very useful for me (not to mention that you took your time to answer my messages). Thanks again and bind on and hard!!! 😎

I just binded a small pocketbook, but it seems to be a bit loose, I think it is because i made the spine a bit too wide, and I will try and fix it by adding more signatures.
Do you have any tips on how to get more tension in the book?
Having too few signatures for the size of the spine could be what's causing the book to feel loose. Adding more signatures should help a lot with that. If not, the original binding might just be too loose, and you can't really fix that after the fact. Don't be afraid to cut the book apart and rebind it. I've certainly done that on more than one occasion. :)

how does the spine stay in place?
Is it possible to use this binding for a 1 signature book?
Hi Denise - Sure, I don't see why not. You'd just need to adjust the width of the spine piece accordingly. :)
What kind of thread are you using here?
It's a heavy-weight waxed linen thread from Hollanders: hollanders.com/collections/waxed-threads
Their thread is really nice but a little pricey.
You can get a similar weight waxed thread on Amazon - a wide assortment of colors for nearly the price of one spool at Hollanders: amzn.to/2LXOYN4
This gives you a lot of choices very cheaply, but I can't vouch for the quality.
What size holes does your cropadile make? I see one that says it makes 1/8 and 3/16 inch holes.
Hi Jonelle - That's the one I have. It has two hole punches that make 1/8 or 3/16-inch holes.

@@jonellebutler7893 For this book I used the 3/16 punch because I wanted to use the larger eyelets, but you could go with smaller eyelets if you prefer, if the thread you're using isn't super thick and heavy. The thread I used here was thick, so the larger holes were useful.
