  • Stab Binding is a classic way to bind a book. There are many, many variations of this binding technique, including several Japanese Stab Binding patterns. This tutorial will show you one generic pattern, giving you a solid idea of what stab binding is all about.
    Here is a great source for the bookboard, or binder's board, mentioned in the video. You can get it in several different thicknesses.

    And if you're tired of cutting bookboard by hand (particularly the thicker bookboard used for making boxes and slipcases) this inexpensive guillotine works wonderfully and is a real time and hand-saver.

    Regular PVA glue:

    The soft weights come from amazon: amzn.to/2X5DbBn
    You can find a colorful assortment of heavy waxed threads for this binding here:

    Hole Punch - This is the handiest tool ever made for easily and painlessly punching a wide variety of different hole sizes:

    Or, just as good for punching holes, the Crop-A-Dile: amzn.to/2oiv2Js
    If you're making your own bookcloth here's a link to rice paper to use as a liner:

    ...and a link to the blotter paper I mention:

    This was EXCELLENT!!! Thank you so much for your clear and concise video on Stab Binding. I had not heard of stab binding until now and I am intrigued. You are an excellent teacher and your video shows each step perfectly. Love the templates too! I will be watching more of your work - again, thank you!

    Thank you thank you for clearly showing the book corner fold-down treatment so well! The pause and close-up of the little excess that insures complete coverage--now I get it!!

    Thank you so much for your videos. Like someone has previously said, your videos are like taking a workshop. I appreciate your time, effort and expertise. I have learned so much from your instructions and can’t say enough about how well you teach. Thank you again

    Beautiful, excellent teaching tutorial. I love your instructions on the hinges. Just what I was after.

    Excellent demonstration, I only came for the hinge but stayed to the end. I'll only be hinging on the front as I want to keep the back board stiff.
    Thank you for making it so very clear.

    I've been looking for a stab binding tutorial for a while now, and your video was highly recommended to me by someone in the bookbinding sub-reddit. I have to say, their suggestion to watch you was well received! This tutorial is concise and easy to follow. Thank you very much for sharing your work!

    I just made a landscape version as a photo album for some photos my husband took. It turned out wonderfully. Thank you so much for the instruction and the inspiration!

    Wow! Your video is so incredibly well done and has so much more information. I tried JSB for the first time this morning by following another video and by the time I was done, I said NEVER AGAIN! You have given me the courage to give it another go and I'm glad for that because I really and truly love the look of this style book. Also deeply appreciate your variation on the cover fold. That just makes so much more sense than using paper. I checked out your website because I saw the punch you were using for the holes (naturally I was doing it the hard way this morning) and I was thrilled to see that you had it in your list of tools along with the link. Many, many thank you's from this girl!

    Just in time. I wanted to do this for my next project. You are so clear and concise. No extra chit chat😀. I love the knitting technique at the end. I have never seen it done that way. Can you score the pages so they open better? Also, how do you add pages to the spacers? Thanks, again. Another winner.

    Great tutorial . Would it be a Good idea to make a watercolour sketchbook with this kind of binding ? Have you tried it ? Also a bookbinding workshop I attended taught that we begin the binding in between the pages and end it back at the same place so that the knot is not seen outside anywhere . I hope that makes sense 😁 You are an excellent teacher. Thank you

      Thanks for the kind words, Darshana. :) You could use this sort of book as a sketchbook, but I think for watercolor you want a book whose pages lie flat when the book is open, like a Coptic Stitch book - ua-cam.com/video/DX7kTLAXfZw/v-deo.html - or one bound with the Secret Belgian Binding - ua-cam.com/video/swOZ5Xxt0Aw/v-deo.html. If the book doesn't lie flat (and stab bound books don't) you'll run into problems as you try to let your watercolors dry.
      Yes, you can start your binding in between pages to hide the knot. I like the method I show in the video of popping the knot inside the hole, but the end result is the same with either technique - a knot that is not visible from the outside. :)

    I am having difficulty getting this to download at the actual size... Do you think you could give the dimensions on the spacing of the holes so I could make the template instead of printing it???
    I would also be interested in directions for how you made the 45deg jig for edge cutting... 2:42

    • @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks
      @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks  Рік тому

      Hi Jim - Sorry for the slow reply. (I've been off the grid for a few days so no internet.) In both columns the holes are spaced 1/2 inch apart running down the length of the spine. The second column is offset to hit the center of the spacing of the first column. Create the spacing of the holes and then just center them top to bottom on whatever size your bookboard is. Hope that makes sense - it's not as complex as it might look. If you need more info than that (with pictures), email me at
      kristi@handmadebooksandjournals.com.
      As for the creation of the corner jig, that's a more complex explanation and might be worthy of a new video. I've also 3-D printed a jig for my own use that I keep thinking of selling, so I might do both of those things in the next couple of weeks - a video of the cardboard jig, and some shameless self-promotion! hahaha

    Oops, forgot to ask where you found your glue dish. My glue brush usually rolls off the desk. 😜

    • @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks
      @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks  5 років тому

      That glue dish is actually a soap dish that I got at IKEA. They came as a pair - I actually use the small one as intended, as a soap dish :) but I found the larger one to be the perfect size for glue!

      Too funny. Going to ask my daughter to pick one up for me. Unfortunately we don’t have one in NH. Thanks for the info on the spacers. I have been working on suminagashi and combining it with quotes so adding pages is great. I will play around with it. I really do appreciate how quickly you reply and how your videos are like workshops. They have the downloads and are so clear without all the jibber jabber. You are one great teacher and I thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. Your artistry is amazing, as well. 🙏
