- Stab Binding is a classic way to bind a book. There are many, many variations of this binding technique, including several Japanese Stab Binding patterns. This tutorial will show you one generic pattern, giving you a solid idea of what stab binding is all about.

Great tutorial . Would it be a Good idea to make a watercolour sketchbook with this kind of binding ? Have you tried it ? Also a bookbinding workshop I attended taught that we begin the binding in between the pages and end it back at the same place so that the knot is not seen outside anywhere . I hope that makes sense 😁 You are an excellent teacher. Thank you
Thanks for the kind words, Darshana. :) You could use this sort of book as a sketchbook, but I think for watercolor you want a book whose pages lie flat when the book is open, like a Coptic Stitch book - ua-cam.com/video/DX7kTLAXfZw/v-deo.html - or one bound with the Secret Belgian Binding - ua-cam.com/video/swOZ5Xxt0Aw/v-deo.html. If the book doesn't lie flat (and stab bound books don't) you'll run into problems as you try to let your watercolors dry.
Yes, you can start your binding in between pages to hide the knot. I like the method I show in the video of popping the knot inside the hole, but the end result is the same with either technique - a knot that is not visible from the outside. :)
I am having difficulty getting this to download at the actual size... Do you think you could give the dimensions on the spacing of the holes so I could make the template instead of printing it???

Hi Jim - Sorry for the slow reply. (I've been off the grid for a few days so no internet.) In both columns the holes are spaced 1/2 inch apart running down the length of the spine. The second column is offset to hit the center of the spacing of the first column. Create the spacing of the holes and then just center them top to bottom on whatever size your bookboard is. As for the creation of the corner jig, that's a more complex explanation and might be worthy of a new video. I've also 3-D printed a jig for my own use that I keep thinking of selling, so I might do both of those things in the next couple of weeks - a video of the cardboard jig, and some shameless self-promotion! hahaha
Oops, forgot to ask where you found your glue dish. My glue brush usually rolls off the desk. 😜
That glue dish is actually a soap dish that I got at IKEA. They came as a pair - I actually use the small one as intended, as a soap dish :) but I found the larger one to be the perfect size for glue!

I have been working on suminagashi and combining it with quotes so adding pages is great. I will play around with it.
