Nice production! A few tips: scoring with the grain of the paper endsheets gives a cleaner crease, slide your binder clips lower on the book block and fan the sheets to one side, brushing the glue on the fan , then fan it the opposite way and repeat. This gets glue between the sheets as well as on their ends= stronger binding. My Porsche was a 1966 911S - wish I had it now. Nate
Hi. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing tips. That might've made my book much more stable. I'll pin your comment for anyone who wants to try this binding in the future. And 66' 911S sounds heavenly ;-)
I am a design student and a tip that helped me a lot when cutting surfaces with the cutter is to first make a mark with the side opposite the edge, this will create a channel where the sharp blade will not get out of its way.
Great video. I will just make sone small suggestion: On the side you plan to glue, take an emery board (the kind you use on your nails, and roughen it up a bit. It helps the glue to really bind to the sheets of paper.
@@bortisima Presumably before gluing the first time - glue usually doesn't have a problem adhering to itself, but might not adhere to other surfaces if they are too smooth, hence the need for sanding :)
I'm almost done with my first bound notebook using this video! Just waiting for the cover to dry. I can't believe how well it turned out, I honestly didn't expect it to work as well as it!!! Thank you!!!!
sorry for the belated reply. unfortunately I lost this notebook while I move 😞. but honestly, I think some might have fallen out if I used it for a long time ;-)
Myself and a friend have decided to build a sketchbook together and trade back and forth every month to fill it. It's about 60 pages of mixed media A4 sheets - ranging from felt, to paper, to card, to cardboard to flexible vinyl, to ironed perler beads. Initially I wanted to use the Japanese book binding method because I can't make signatures from the pages, they're already cut to size. I was thinking of just drilling through the mammoth stack and sewing it together, but tougher materials in the stack wouldn't be able to bend. I'm going to try this method, and add extra glue layers and cloth to the spine and hope and pray it decides to stay together 🙏
4:14 Great stuff! Initially we were instructed to keep thin books under our heavy mattresses overnight and later on under stacks of heavy books. Starting Kindergarten, all new books were to be covered with "brown paper" ( rolls of this paper were bought together with the books ) and a name sticker was put in place stat. Dad taught us a couple of times and then it was our job. Neat, well covered books and notebooks used to be a matter of pride and were also appreciated by our teachers. Some kids were able to keep these covers intact for months on end! In middle/senior school, it was considered trendy to create one's own notebooks with A4 sheets stitched together with soft binding - plus many considered it foolish to buy overpriced notebooks with poor quality pages. Now its difficult to find quality book binders around. So will probably get back to the basics again. Cheers! 🇮🇳 🇺🇸
Just finish making a sketchbook using this tutorial and turn out great! … just end up using way too much glue, but by far this is the best looking sketchbook I done.
Scorimg with an swe is a great touch that most wouldnt consider. Nice. I like to use a method of cutting holes through the edge of loose paper and sewing through that to make sure the loose paper doesnt fall apart but with enough glue, you dont need to. I just like the added strength.
Hi! Just a question: do you really need a cutting mat to be able to do this? Because the cutting mats around my area are quite expensive and I'm just beginning on this small hobby of book binding.
@@dahliaaaaaaaa6323 no you don't. As long as you can cut somewhere without scratching your good tables, furniture or flooring, you're good. Just stack some old newspapers and use that as a board if you got nothing else

Very good. The only thing I would add would be that PVA does not stick to plastic, so, when glueing the cover, protect the inside of the book with a layer of cling wrap.
Very nice little book. Thanks for the video. I like the end-paper bit as it prevents wasting your first and last sheets of actual art paper. I will be making some books soon and will definitely try your method.

if you make 2mm to 5mm (or any other size you need) cuts you have more glued surface and a more resistant binding between paper sheets. And if let it dry, glue again and add Waxed Threads (you can use any, but the wax make it easier to manipulate inside drying glue) partially inside these cuts you can reduce the movement stress of the dry glue when you open and close the book.
This comment seems quite helpful - is there any chance you can explain it in more detail? Do you mean if the paper is thicker, you need to score it deeper? And do you mean that you need to sew the paper stack together with thread if it's thicker?
@@lydiac9118 this is only a improvement to the technique used in the video. The deepness is personal preference i use 5mm but i only need 2mm. And the threads aren't sewed, they are only glued, and only used for stress reduction (to prevent deformation of the binding between sheets).
@@matualeman5142 Great tip. I was going to do the thread / wax thing but I had an idea I wanted to throw past you. Do you think dental floss would work? Thanks in advance.

Is PVA so flexible that you can bend it without the spine breaking after a week of use? That's the only thing I'm worried about here. Very good tutorial!
Yes, good quality PVA will remain flexible for years. Three or four coats applied the way 'porsche and coffee' did should be strong enough so that "mild rough handling" of the book won't separate pages at the spine. If you think the book will get thrown into your bags or onto the seat of a car, etc. (i.e: rough handled) or that it will be larger than that shown here (9x12inches or larger) , then you can strengthen the spine structure by gluing a layer of light weight cloth to the spine after the pages have been glued (cotton, linen, even a double layer of cheese cloth will do). This "spine liner" can be a half inch shorter than the spine and it should rap tightly around onto the front and back outside pages about 1 inch. Then the covers can be measured, folded and glued on as 'porsche and coffee' did. Some demos elsewhere suggest using "Duck tape" ( or Duct tape) to "line" or reinforce the spine. I do NOT recommend. Duck tape adhesive 'creeps' until it dries and becomes a powdery residue. Also, PVA will not bond well to the shiny face. Some free advice from a Professional Bookbinder. { ;-- ) This 'porsche and coffee' demo is pretty good, by the way.
@@tr33m00nk I was planning to use a porous cloth as spine liner over a layer or two of pva glue (mod podge actually, as I find it stronger than pva glue) and add another layer or two of the glue to make it stronger. Glad to know it works.
@@bellasmith8017 It feels that way to me. A little goes a long way and stuff sticks better with it as well. But also, I use mod-podge from an Indian brand and it might be different from the ones you find elsewhere.
@@Saphia_ In my (limited) experience, your idea of adding a layer of porous cloth produces a much higher quality binding than glue alone. I've used 'book binding cloth' made by Irenare, which looks like cheese cloth but is thinner and more flexible. I cut a strip about an inch wider than the book's thickness, center it on the binding side and then I spread glue on it with a soft foam brush. The cloth mesh allows the glue to contact the page edges and the cloth itself all at once. I've only tried pva glue and had good results, comparable to a typical store bought paperback book (which of course doesn't open so effortlessly to the full 180 degree angle like in this video, but maybe the thicker paper used here makes a difference).

depending on the glue you're using, you can "unruin" your brush by just soaking it in water. the glue you're using seems to be white liquid glue. glues like that are water-based and will wash right off if it hasn't hardened yet. if it has hardened, like i said earlier, you can soak it in water to liquify it. EDIT: so i ruined one of my foam brushes. i can't unruin it with just water. it's definitely unsavable at this point. This was a first for me, the glue stuck on it was like slime when submerged underwater. it was so stuck in the foam parts, it won't get off. so maybe one more tip: don't use foam brushes for spreading glue.
