I’m a fan of your channel and have enjoyed your content so much. I have been inspired to aquascape my 76 gal half round aquarium but had to delay the process due to my sister being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My beautiful sister lost her battle with cancer this month and it totally broke my heart. Watching how you created something so beautiful out of something so small was humbling. It inspired me to aquascape on a smaller scale with my 5 gal aquarium. I think I will make it a tribute aquarium to my sister. I am hoping that the process will help me heal inside while honoring my beautiful sister. Thank you, thank you so much for creating such wonderful content and inspiring so many. I will try to video my aquascape journey and will share it with you when I’m done. PS: I will also watch your friends channel to get some pointers and will make sure to put my hand on the substrate creating an upward arch before pouring the water in. Thanks again!
So glad you made this video George. I really enjoy Md fishtanks as well. I myself have a 12 inch diameter bowl in my kitchen that was set up a year ago using this method and it's doing great. Funny enough, he recently featured a tiny desktop scape that looks alot like another i have in my kitchen. All my scapes use this method and all are different depending on lighting of course. Has been a great learning tool as i advance in my hobby. Only my oldest setup gets liquid ferts since the nutrients from the soil have been depleted. My smallest scape holds about a quart of water (if that) and i find it needs a water change every other day. I also use the same technique of just sitting it in the sink however i just fill a pitcher of declorinated water and an air line running down in. So much fun with so little and very rewarding. 👍👍👍
Now you know the genius of MD, he's truly gifted. Mixing sand, gravel, and aqua soil keeps it from being dirty. Using tiny, tiny plants keeps it to scale. Building smaller to larger towards the back gives it depth. I'm preparing to mimic his Ikea cylinder idea and if I come anywhere close to his I'll feel like I did something.
Genius move with the use of paintbrush, and colander, for slow water adding! What a great idea, including the whole process. Have a 6 gallon with some plants & two snails. Plants haven't grown much. Now I know why. I love your approach, and not being stuffy, or pretentious about all that you know. A mark of a pro, is one that makes whatever it is they do, look easy. Thanks for the easy breezy explanations, I know what I have to do now! Awesome sauce!
Cant believe you have never done something this small before! It is such a joy to do work on these small scapes. Glad you discovered it and gave it a try!
So funny watching you try to get your hands in there lol. Great to show how little is needed to make one though, thanks for the little competition, I enjoyed that immensely.
You inspired me, George, I was looking for a low-tech aquascape. I will try my hand on and share the photos if you like. I am an absolute beginner, never done anything like that. Keep doing it.
I love the little scape. I have been a fan of MD Fish Tanks for long enough that I am pretty sure that I have watched most if not all of his videos. I also love run on sentences.
Hey George, just wanted to say that I am really loving your video editing and the quality of your videos lately. The intro was so captivating of you standing up and the footage is phenomenal. It's been a pleasure watching you improve your technique both in aquascaping and video editing these past couple of years. Keep up the good work!
I love how excited you got about this little bowl considering all the epic scrapes you've done. 😊 This is great for me when I have healthy surplus plants and I feel bad about throwing them out.
Nice little scape. These are called Walstad scapes after the scientist Diana Walstad. She pioneered the low-tech approach back in the '90s, and published the diffinitive guide in 1999. "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium: a Practical Manual and Scientific Treatis." You WILL have to do 3-5 water changes, initially; after that the water will stay clear. Your drain instinct was spot on but the fill is the same, air hose fast drip. Most of us Walstadt-ers cap our soil with a layer of pea gravel. Ratio is flexible but a 1:2 soil to gravel really helps anchor everything. You may want to add an apple snail or small nerite to check algae. Well done👏
i recently got a 3.6 gallon vase for 12 dollars from hobby lobby- they were on sale for half off- something that may have costed me 30 usd at a petsmart i got for 12 usd- it is now my fav tank and i dont even have anything in it other than some plants and some ghost shrimplets
I think it’s interesting idea to see Mark and share some knowledge to your subscriber, By the way i like the way you pick some plants in this tank and put it together, beautiful
I did a dry start with dwarf hair grass and have done the aquarium with zero ferts, no co2, and no filter, and the 10 gallon has a full carpet of dwarf hair grass. It’s quiet beautiful
Did subbed to Mark just last week, UA-cam showed his channel after watching probably one of your vids, liked this style allready but did not had the time for it. I saw a Lott of Serpadesign vids, somewhat simular to Mark s but more paludarium or terrarium style, Also great content and he uses materials from outside( so completely cost less) except for the bowl or jar. I did tried it before and let aquatic plants grow out of the bowl, did you know when some plants get above water level they will bloom, have you ever seen the Pogostemon erectus flower: unbelievably beautifull , you have to experience that one. Gravel with a roottab worked for me back then, I know of times that complete soils were not available . This makes extra new people ready for our hobby. Don't forget to change water and do some maintenance( glas leaning) Cheers George
I have a little larger bowl on my kitchen counter. I use a small sponge filter for water movement. Just water changes twice a week. Even shrimp in there. It is a balanced system now. Which is the important one in this style of aquarium. You have to maintain a balance between input of light and nutrients or you have an algae bowl.
Now this was interesting George. I've been waiting for you to do something like this! It is indeed a fun lowbudget way to enjoy nature and make use of your cuttings. I've tried to keep a Wabi Kusa a few times now, keeping the plants growing long term has been a bit of a challenge. Like the idea of adding water so that it becomes a small aquarium. Got to try this, I think it's cool 😎 Keep on scaping mate 👍
This is a really cool idea for these old fishbowls that people have lying around. The other day I found my old fishbowl and I didn't want to throw it out. Now I'm glad I didn't do it :D
Fantastic. I have 3 of these little scapes on my kitchen table. They are a great way for us to learn things like what plants will make it? which plants can get by with very little light? etc? So fun. Thank you for sharing! - Little Bobby
I've been subscribed and following Mark for a long time. He does amazing no filter, planted tanks. Good job with your desk top all natural bowl, George. Add a nerite snail and a couple of shrimp and it will be perfect. Love these videos where you go outside your comfort zone and try new things. 😘 👍💕👍
This was really nice to watch... I really like MD fish tanks, foo the flowerhorn and serpa design (Even though he doesnt't do a lot of fish tanks). I'm quite fascinated with this type of tank, would love to try and make one myself - but my husband says no more tanks for me...
Hi Georg, i had to laugh so much, but it was really cute. I have Mark for a long time on the subscription and he makes wonderful Naturscapes. Love you guys best regards Mona 👍❤
I have a similar bowl, plants soil all ready too but wanted to buy some spider wood. I've been meaning to do this for a while and I'm glad that it looks like so much fun!
Heyah George, cool little scape project, I’ve been thinking of doing something similar lately. So I’m keen to see how your bowl micro ecosystem progresses.🤘
🌺Thank you George for sharing this video, this gave me an idea, it'll be a really nice gift or Christmas present. I'll leave a little water in the container & give a water bottle or have them fill it at their home or office.🎁🤗
Ahh yes the ten dollar setup, once you already own all the plants and hard scape and substrate. It’s also very rare to find a bowl for that cheap but still nice scape.
This is a great video but the price point on the title is misleading. He brought the bowl but didn't have to buy the substrate, plants, decorations, etc. because he had them already. It would cost way more than $10 if someone had to buy everything. The plants alone would have costed at least $15 to 20 and that's if you brought it off of something on CL or FB marketplace. The price would be double at a fish shop.
Hey I need help I added so many plants last week but they don't look good I added fertiliser and also co2 liquid carbon to the tank which is 300l lights on 6 hours a day now but before it was 8 I have good lights on it on full which is okay for the tank not to bright but they don't seem to be doing well? Any help is appreciated
Nimrod “ I hope George does not put me in the bowl” swims and hide.
Maybe you should put decholorinator its very inprotant
MD fish tanks has one of the best channels out there imo, his and the flowerhorn is amazing to watch and relax.
Foo the Flowerhorn?
@@Faboulsfabouls That's it.
@@Faboulsfabouls The best fish keeper ive ever seen. Tends to every need his creatures might have in the most effective way.
So nice to see george relaxed and laughing at himself a little.. Loved it!

Love it! I was actually just day dreaming at work about making some of these for myself and as gifts!

I was fascinated with this. I always watch MD Fish Tanks. It is almost another aspect of aquascaping..
Genius move with the use of paintbrush, and colander, for slow water adding! What a great idea, including the whole process. Have a 6 gallon with some plants & two snails. Plants haven't grown much. I love it! I have a 1.5 gal bowl I'm going to setup with my leftover plants. It will be fun!
So funny watching you try to get your hands in there lol. Great to show how little is needed to make one though, thanks for the little competition, I enjoyed that immensely.
Bowlscaping !
I tried it before summer, with natural lighting.
I think I'm going to try again.
Thanks for the video.
Having Mark on for meet the scaper would be great!!
Definitely!

I love MD Fishtanks work, and you pulled off a lovely little scape!

Beautiful idea , congratulations George 😉.
Nice one George, I've been playing around with various shaped bowls , it's fun and very satisfying too. Keep it up.

That was so enjoyable to watch. Your passion and commentary always bring smiles.
George, you did great for a first time "no" bowl ... keep at it, don't make this your last! New subscriber, too. Peace & blessings from Texas ♡♡♡
Great of you to mention mark's channel, 👍🙏✌top video...

Great job george .. u didn't give up
thank you so much for doing this. I had a bowl like that (little bigger) I was saving for something like this. I love it
I have 3 of these and they are so much fun. Usually house Betta. They do really well in this set up. My bowls are 2 gallon.

Looks beautiful! Great piece for a desk with the light. Has that calming effect. Great job George!

Looks awesome George! Funny gratuitous lazy Tommy shot 😂
MD Fish Tanks really inspired me to make my own betta tank :)

Out to buy a glass bowl right now. 👍🏻 also MD Tanks is a great channel. CO2 from sugar, yeast water and a plastic bottle !! Awesome
I'm a great fan of MD Fish tanks
Yes Mark is amazing!

Did it work? Tough plant choices! Lol. Cute little decorative tank for the desk. Nice.
It’s still going strong. Looks messy but healthy 👍
I'm going to try this.
Definitely inspired! Looks like something Tanner does on serpa design.... really amazing stuff!
This was really nice to watch...
I really like MD fish tanks, foo the flowerhorn and serpa design (Even though he doesnt't do a lot of fish tanks).
I'm quite fascinated with this type of tank, would love to try and make one myself - but my husband says no more tanks for me...
You need a new husband!
(Just kidding) 😂
@@GeorgeFarmerStudios well... Personally I think a three-tank limit is harsh but not enough to change him out 😂
Hi Georg, i had to laugh so much, but it was really cute. I have Mark for a long time on the subscription and he makes wonderful Naturscapes. Love you guys best regards Mona 👍❤
Brilliant idea
I agree as You said My plant choice was ridiculous... A bit big indeed, thanks for showing us some real life
I have a similar bowl, plants soil all ready too but wanted to buy some spider wood. I've been meaning to do this for a while and I'm glad that it looks like so much fun!
Heyah George, cool little scape project, I’ve been thinking of doing something similar lately. So I’m keen to see how your bowl micro ecosystem progresses.🤘
I would have done soil capped w sand. Love the layout
🌺Thank you George for sharing this video, this gave me an idea, it'll be a really nice gift or Christmas present. I'll leave a little water in the container & give a water bottle or have them fill it at their home or office.🎁🤗
Chain grass works pretty well in these and java moss. African dwarf lily bulbs too.
That is so cool! ❤️
Do you need to use the Tropica substrate and Tropica Soil or can you use any gravel ontop of the substrate ? Great vid 😃
Tropica Substate is designed to be used under gravel. Tropica Soil is best used on its own. In here I used Soil 👍
@@GeorgeFarmerStudios thank you that has helped me alot, I can get started now 😃
Love this idea. How about a tea strainer for adding water?
Love it! Definitely gonna try it 😍
Very simple yet zen scaped bowl. How often you do water change on this after the initial set up?
Ahh yes the ten dollar setup, once you already own all the plants and hard scape and substrate.
It’s also very rare to find a bowl for that cheap but still nice scape.
Great video! I think you could remove about a third of a substrate for more water volume
Very Nice!!! How often do you need to do water changes?
I just top up with tap water. No water changes
Your just amazing man.
Looks awesome 😎 man think you should try a bigger bowl and really out do him 😝
Very cool bowl 💚 curious to see how it's developing :)
Aquasphere.. Like atmostphere ! Love the vid ! Cheers from Finland ^^,
could this be considered a form of wabi kusa?. love the slick intro really nice . think you need to get a tea strainer for these lol
Will you be putting any live species in it ? If so let me know . I wanna have a look
It’s stunning! Thank you
George can i ask as im a newb, for this type of tank whats the maintenance work after few months?
I'm actually going to be rescaping my waterbowl tomorrow
Will this turn into mosquito nest? may gonna put some little fish on mine. Nice video!

I subscribed to MD!
Once I built one of those, it got so cloudy, to solve this I put a small filter in it for less than one hour then I removed it :D
Any follow up on this bowl? Success/fail?? Love the Fluval Flex in background. Any GF style modifications to make it high tech tank?😁
53b in a bowl !!! A whole new concept of an Orb. Keep on rambling!
Love the idea!
Thanks mate
Love the classic GF looking at the tank shot
Finally the day I was looking for, GF aquascaping a bowl and it's lowtech
Ahaha 😂 So funny 😝I've also been watching some videos by Md Fish Tanks 😉 Interesting! Cheers 😘 For Tommy too
Pretty Sweet brother and yes a bit of too much soil a bit less perhaps?
As a kid we use to have a fish bowl and kept a gold fish in it. :-)

Hey I need help I added so many plants last week but they don't look good I added fertiliser and also co2 liquid carbon to the tank which is 300l lights on 6 hours a day now but before it was 8 I have good lights on it on full which is okay for the tank not to bright but they don't seem to be doing well?
