  • For this week's video, I talk about my new ball head, the Platyball. I will show you how to use it, especially with the platypod and will explain why I went with this type of ball head. What is your ball head and what tripod do you carry with you ? Look forward to discussing this with you.

I love the button lock/unlock feature Emily. I really haven’t got on well with ball heads in the past but this looks like a great alternative to the normal ball-head. Thanks for sharing!

I am with you. Ball heads are my least favorite photo gear but so far I am impressed with this one.

I found it difficult to use the Platyball Ergo due to the arthritis in my hands. It was hard to push the lock and unlock buttons and almost dropped and damaged my camera and lens.

An interesting video Emilie, thank you. Like you I hate tripods. But I also would like to develop macro skills and use focus stacking (for instance) and I guess that would not be possible without a tripod or Platyball type of secure platform. So what I would find interesting would be for you to do a video illustrating your use of the Platyball with the Olympus 60mm macro lens, which I have but very rarely use. And also, do you ever use the 60mm without a tripos or Platyball, and given the great image stabilisation of the OM1, how practical do you think it would be? Thanks again for your great channel. I have purchased so much on the back of your recommendations I'm running out of money!!!!

Hi John, thank you for your questions. I actually use the OM-1 and 60mm macro most of the time without a tripod or platypod. I find it way easier and with the incredible stabilization we have on those cameras it is zero issues. I am preparing a video about macro tips for this Sunday so stay tuned. The only time I use a tripod or platypod for macro is with waterdrop refraction and if I have extremely complaisant subjects....which is rare! You can actually do some focus stacking without a tripod with the OM-1. Not guaranteed to work every time but I had some success.

Thank you, I will think about it, it may be usefull for me. Also I have a question about tripod, I'm thinking to buy small and flexible and not expensive, do you have suggestions? Thank you

I have the peak design tripod as it is the most flexible and small tripod I found and really like peak design products but it is not the most stable tripod. If you have a camera store close to you, I would go and try a couple of tripod and see which one would work the best.

I do for shooting my videos and doing star trails. But for macro when I need to go very lawn this is a great options. Also when I travel and don’t want to take the peak design, that is also a good option.
