This is insane. I've been trying to learn this songs for months, but I've always disliked the clickbaity youtube tutorials for guitar. I learned this song from you within 2 days. I cannot thank you enough, I can't wait to keep practicing and show my bandmates. Lol thank you so much!!!!
Yeah it took me a while too, it totally depends on your guitar style as to how quickly you get it down. Some will pick it up super quick whilst others will never get it.
love the tutorials, why are some people so negative? i don't care if it's played on a seasick Steve nomads guitar, it's the content that matters here and tbf, the sounds are really nice anyway. Thank you for giving up your time to do these.
Everything in this video is so brilliant: You, the song, those beatiful classic sunburst and red Fender Strats , that Gibson, and the nice Fender amp...Your playing is neat and your lesson is top notch. You are so talented... thank you for sharing!
Great lesson! Didn't realise how good Johnny Marr was at composing. Learning this tricky songs really develop one as a guitar player! I'm definitely subscribing!
You are an angel and an amazing guitarist. Thanks for posting Johnny's brilliant guitar work on this song. I just started reading his autobiography and This Charming Man popped into my head. Your breakdown of the song is pure perfection!
This is such a great tutorial. I've had a half baked version of this tune kicking about the auld repertoire for years, and you've helped shave off the uglier edges and refine it to something almost beautiful. Liked & subscribed. Thank you!
WOWWWWW!!! Your video was brilliant. Thank you so much :-) I was struggling with the tab and now sound amazing. I've been playing on a telecaster and a hollow body Gretsch and both sound fantastic. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Another great lesson, thank you so much allison! When I saw you play it, I really think it was too hard for me but thanks to motivation, and of course your really well explained lesson, now I can easily go through this all time classic! Long live Johnny Marr!
Im so long in the tooth i saw The Smiths several times in the UK. Have some downtime and decided to get to learn Johnnys Smiths guitar. Can see his influences of English folk turned on their head. Nonetheless Alison, very much enjoying yr videos, easy to grasp and thank you.

desde Uruguay muchas gracias por tu tutorial!! adoro a los smiths y siempre quise tocar sus temas , te felicito eres muy buena guitarrista !!! y arriba los smiths!!!!
Brilliant, thanks! I tried learning it a different way starting at the 14th fret an the G and B string, this way is so much easier especially on an acoustic! Not sure which is the authentic method but I dony care! Bravo x
I am getting it thank you I love this song great lesson great instructor musician you can play and teach what a combo....Roland J Gutierrez from Magdalena New Mexico usa...
First of all, thanks for this great lesson. I prefer the version from the John Peel session over the officially recorded one. Is that one in the same tuning?
Great tutorial Allison, Its helped me thus far. I still struggle getting passed some in-between beats and those very last notes in the intro part just prior to the verse. -"Novice guitarist" :)
\that's a great lesson Allison !.............I happen to live within a few miles of Johnny, so through some sort of osmosis, living close to him. but also taking attention too your lesson I hope to get it "licked" ! If you know what I mean !!...
Hi Alison and thank you for this great tutorial. I am a senior who started the electric guitar only one year ago and it is often difficult for me but I remain very motivated. I manage to play Charming man but only 80% of your speed after 3 weeks of hard work ... how long did it take you to play it as you do it (i.e. perfectly!) So long. Michael
Hi Allison, do you think you could do a tutorial on Half a Person or Some Girls are Bigger than Others? I think those are two of Marr's most magical of riffs :)
PS Ive been trying to play this song for years learning it painstakingly at half speed and almost had it down pat..I was so proud :) now I can do it spot on. Think there's a video on my channel also. PS what is the name of your band???
can anyone else help with the part at the end of the second part where it isn’t explained she says it’s the same as the beginning but it looks and sounds different
Johnny marr was insanely talented for his age, this riff is like heaven.
You mean just like heaven😂
Heaven knows I’m miserable now trying to learn this riff
I’m going nowhere fast with progress on learning it smh. I know it over
Yes yes, very original comment, never heard it before. Yes yes… 🤓🥲🫣

amazing song!
This is an awesome tutorial. Thank you so much!!
Super lesson. Thanks!
Awesome lesson finally got it thank you
First of all, thanks for this great lesson.
I prefer the version from the John Peel session over the officially recorded one. Is that one in the same tuning?
John peel is in standard with capo on 2nd, but the original recording is a bit higher
mira Standard tuning with the capo on the second fret is what's in this video. Isn't this the recorded version, not the John Peel version?
well done love from Manchester
This is a fantastic tutorial..thank you
LOVE it! and yes....im sure she can play smoke on the water...that's simple.....
Great tutorial Allison, Its helped me thus far. I still struggle getting passed some in-between beats and those very last notes in the intro part just prior to the verse. -"Novice guitarist" :)
