      I was gonna say that. All video guitar lessons should be done this way. Patent and sell this system! Like with sports on TV now you have the strike zone box, the first down line in yellow, etc. It's better than being there! But being there is still important.

CAGED is taught so incredibly succinctly here, it's phenomenal. Everything from how clear his instructions are, to the concepts he shares, to the meter of his voice. He just has a slightly transparrent image of the fretboard overload on top of the film layer. It's not the fingers that are slightly opaque, it's the second layer of fretboard/strings. You can see the layers seperate when the strings vibrate or when he does a bend of vibratro.

    This might be the best caged explanation and demonstration I’ve ever seen or heard. I had to white knuckle learning notes and how chord positions changed. I took lessons from about 11-13 and mainly learned basic chords, some scales, some riffs, some songs, but never was taught proper recognition of the neck. Once I started just practicing on my own it became kind of a natural step as I realized I could play essentially the same thing in different placement. Id recommend this video to anyone learning even if you have an instructor

    • @nickpawsey
      @nickpawsey 3 роки тому +2

      Yeah it helps, but scales will help you a little more to unlock that fret board. Start with minor pentatonic learn the 5 shapes and then learn it in major, and then learn the blues scale and the full major and minor scale. You can use your top 2 strings, your E and A as "airports" to play in any key and quickly get into any position. For example you are playing in key of G and you want to start your minor scale, you'd simple go down to your G note on your A strong and start Shape 4 with your root note and continue your shapes.

    Hey Scott ... "just when I thought that i'd learned the CAGED system!" I sat & listened to you explore & explain "things" I'd heard on other sites; they may have the facts, but not the approach you have in teaching ... I enjoy how you present the characteristics of CAGED, that make the light bulb go off inside me; and I'm going after, "oh yeah, now it I see it, now it makes more sense." That's why I've signed onto your Patreon Page ... there's that special "something" you bring to explaining concepts of the music subjects that is satisfyingly clear! At the end of a lesson I know what you were teaching is now in my mental inventory/storage ... Your site is a keeper and thanks for making studying and playing, inspirational and crystal clear! Thanks!

    Christ. In my spare time I've been singing and strumming rhythm guitar, finger picking, and even doing the occasional solo from rote memorization, for nearly 30 years. Sat in and did some vocals with the odd band here and there, did some open mics etc... Most people think I know how to "play guitar", but I always felt like a fraud next to lead players. I've never had one of them, any other player, or even several teachers, effectively lay out what the hell they're doing to just whip out an improvised solo.
    I finally chalked it up to something I'd just never "get".
    ONE fucking 18 minute video, and 3 decades of banging away finally make sense. I don't know whether to be happy I finally get it, or pissed at how simple it is and how inept everyone else is at explaining it. Both I guess.
    Well done sir!

    • @heathwasson7811
      @heathwasson7811 3 роки тому +7

      @@oswaldogarcia5358 yeah, for me, none of this information was new, but it never really coalesced into a usable whole before. Between this and his pentatonic scale video, everything finally came together for me. I knew the scales, knew the chord shapes, knew the neck etc... But it just never gelled together on how they all interact with each other. The way he connected the interrelated bits of theory, with the on-screen graphics, is great.
      I've had all the physical skills to do pretty much anything I want on the guitar, from flat picking, strumming, to complex finger picking, and could play a thousand songs from Alabama to Led Zeppelin. With the caveat, that I had to know the song, and/or have the TABS. I couldn't just take a random 12 bars blues song and start playing fills along with it. Now I'm no BB or Clapton, but just after a couple days of seeing this video, I can grab any random backing track on youtube and start playing along with it. Something I'd given up on ever being able to do years ago.

    Where in the heck did this guy come from? I subscribe to Paul David's, Art of Guitar, Guitar Zoom with Steve Stines, YourGuitarSage with eric Andrea's, and some kid from England that wears glasses he got from Sir Elton John... and in this one video he does a better job explaining CAGED system better than any of these youtube heavy weights. First video I've watched but I'm amazed. Fantastic job. Particularly in how deep it goes (which scales fit over which chords) and how concise it is. I can't wait to see more but I had to applaud this one.

I know CAGED is just as basic as a multiplication table in math (it's just out there that everyone can observe physically) , but it's fairly hard to find someone who can make a video that has a SUPER-DUPER CLEAR explanation in the entire world. The thing is that you use a systematic and organized method to visualise the fingerboard like this, which incredibly insane. This should be in the patron video for those membership. Much appreciated again.

      @bjarkenielsen8515 Рік тому +6

      @@zootsoot2006 You get it. They are placed the same place on the neck😊
      The pentatonic scales are formed aroud these CAGED-shapes. The same goes for the diatonic scale etc.
      So, you initially use the scales to play your solos in key, and later on you use the CAGED-forms to target the specific chords in the underlying melody when playing your solos.
      Chord-targeting gives you solos a “better” sound, compared to merely playing in key.
      Anyway, you use CAGED for chord tone targeting in your solos 😊

    Echoing everyone else here. That was an amazing and clear explanation of CAGED (and how the guitar is laid out). I’ve been playing for decades and it feels like you’re the first person who’s come along and explained to me what the hell is going on. “Oh, that’s why that pentatonic box/position is in that shape!” I’ve been trying to force my brain and my fingers to remember arbitrary shapes and positions, but now I see the logic behind it all, I can map it out for myself. I’m so happy I could cry! Thank you, Scott.

      @@cassanateli i mean think about man, most professionals dont even know simple chords and riffs. Everyone learns in the own way/style, iv seen many videos of kirk hammett struggling to play a simple ass riffs but then bust out a mean ass fucking solo.Everyone is different. Im a skateboarder so i like to think of guitar like SkateBoarding, everyone has there own
      style/steez and there own
      tricks/licks. Some people can pickup the really hard riffs quick but then sit there to struggle to play a simple G or C chord. Like in skateboarding some pros can literally bust out a 540 tre-flip down a 20 set of stairs but then not even be able to a simple kickflip.
      Thats why i love SkateBoarding/surfing/skimboarding and guitar, you have your style, your own flow, your own take on tricks/your own way of doing them.
      I play a left handed guitar and im left handed,which already makes me different from the crowd.

      @@ScottPaulJohnson what took you forever to edit is going to help hundreds of thousands in the future giving them this map. Isn't that crazy to think how many future guitarist you (your caged vid) will be the foundation of their understanding of guitar. I think that is the coolest part of the whole thing here. My generation used boring mixes of scales and patterns to practice until this fundamentals are naturally learned thus taking the long way around. Then if one is inclined, does various theories and styles. Can you imagine how strange it was for composers hundreds of years ago to learn music, and its evolution through various transitional instruments, and then to early popular music on, and now internet age learning has fast tracked what took centuries, and now have 5 yr old Satches coming out.
