One junk yard and two hours later, torsion bar replaced. Because this video, I decided not to wait for my local mechanic to have an opening and do the job myself. 3/4" socket worked for me, along with C-wrench for the lock nut. I also had to cut the broken bits to get the arm out. Thanks Ozzstar. 2001 4wd.
Scott C. Parker glad it worked out for you.
Glad you got it done Ozzstar....I would've replaced both with heavier duty Sway-Away Torsion Bars since it failed the way it did! You must have been airborne doing some offroading! I'm currently installing some Sway-Away Torsion Bars on a 93 Hardbody Extended Cab that I'm lowering as well with BellTech spindles....Glad you referenced all your work back to the service manual, you're one of the few....I didn't see you remove nor install the snaprings so I hope you didn't forget it, If the Exterra has them....Good to see you being safety conscious, most peole didn't utilize PPE on their UA-cam Vid's I appreciate you setting an example and giving people the motivation to never give up....You're a Technician not a mechanic! I know one when I see one! I'll view your Maxima Vid as well! Ihave 3 Maximas and 1 Hardbody myself....I love Nissans!
Thanks for the comments Dan, I appreciate the kind words!! Take it easy and happy Nissaning -Ozz
P.S. No snap rings on the 2000-2004 Xterra :-) and my buddy went over a speed bump in a parking lot when the bar snapped.....corrosion at the adjuster arm.......and then it became my headache to fix....go figure
Two weeks ago I had almost the same problem. I have a 2WD 2001 Xterra and also the front passenger side was a little lower. The problem is that I didn't know anything about tortion bars and my usual mechanic said that my tortion bar was broken. I actually didn't buy that but still I went to many stores looking for that bar.
Even when that bar was also used for the Frontier and many of those trucks were sold here, nobody had it and it wasn't even shown on the catalogues. Not even the dealership had it and they told me that, if they ever find it, it would cost a big deal of money.
So I decided to get a second opinion and I found an honest expert on suspensions. It only needed a little adjustment and that's it.
Thank you for this video because I still have a lot to learn about this truck.
You are welcome Fernando, thanks for watching and keep on learning! Glad you got your truck fixed by someone who is honest and not a crook! Take it easy - Glen
Impeccable video and couldn’t have complete this task without your video. Thanks for your hard work and this incredible video.
I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thank you kindly. 👍 -Ozz
Appreciate you putting up the video. This helped me get the suspension squared up after a complete overhaul. Thanks!
bikenraider99 your welcome, appreciate the support. I will never forget making this video because I did this repair and filmed it not knowing I had acute bronchitis and about a day away from being hospitalized with pneumonia. I was very sick. It is ironic at 19:33 when I say 'this cold is killing me" it literally was and I was being ignorant. I never felt so weak and tired in my 44 years on earth. Good news is i recovered after finally going to the emergency room and getting medicine. The moral of the story- STAY HEALTHY and take care of yourself! Take it easy- Ozz

This was a helpful video for doing my '99 Frontier. Thanks. The thumbnail for this video is a little misleading, because it shows a 2nd gen Xterra. Those have coilovers up front.
great instructions. putting a suspension kit on my 1st gen and stumbled across this looking for stock ride height t-bar install. nicely done
Thanks Matt
yep, same thing happened to me. 00 xterra, split the same way. NY state, winter cold, snapped parked in my garage. Thanks for the video!
glad the video helped you out. Thanks for watching and commenting
Thanks Ozz running into the same problem. still, haven't found the T bar. I just drive the truck but watching the video helped me understand what the hell was going on.
thanks for taking the time to do this. Whitehorse Yukon Canada
Thanks for your comment Pat and I hope you get that torsion bar fixed soon. It's a hard part to find but fairly common to fail. Glad the vid was helpful
+Ozzstar Ozz I found two in Alberta there being truck up the Alaska Highway. should be up and running next week. Have a great summer and thanks again.
you have a real good way of explaining things thanks .from New Zealand.
Thanks Stew!
Just a tad misleading to put a 2nd Gen in the picture when you're doing work on a 1st gen. but great video
Will the torsion bar come out without taking those three bolts out by the front wheel I've got two of those bolts that are stripped or do I need to cut them off this is a broke torsion bar it wasn't for replacement bars broke into if anyone knows has any suggestions
I believe that bracket has to be removed in order to get the torsion bar out.
Thanks for the video, you did an excellent job explaining everything. Much appreciated.
Your welcome, thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the well done video. A big help in prep for my suspension rebuild this weekend!,
Thanks for stopping by the channel! Good luck with your project
Thanks Ozz! I won't give up and neither should you! ... Take it easy!
That's the spirit Shelby! Thanks for your comment - Ozz
Without the service manual, I would have compared and mirrored the driver side torsion assembly to match the splines on the end pieces.
You never showed how to get the bar in the front is it real hard to get the bar in both ends front and rear or dose it just slide in ? I want to lift my Frontier with aftermarket bars and upper control arms
Have same problem broken same side same spot on my 2004 V6 great post!
DOC187able thanks doc, it wasn't easy finding a replacement part, take it easy - Ozz
Hi. I ordered the Torsion bar anchor kit but it did not come with a washer? Where did you get the washer? I need a new washer.
Awesome video man. Really useful info that I needed thank you!
Glad it helped you out Kris! -Glen
Curious as to why the clips preview photo is a 2nd gen (which doesn't have torsion bars)...
thanks man I have to do the same for the drivers side on saturday very helpfull
very helpful video. btw, did u remember to remove the wrench still attached to the torque arm bolt at minute 19:26?
Lexi i have been waiting a long time for someone to ask me that and you are the first! Yes I did crawl under there and get the wrench after filming. You are very observant, thanks for commenting! - Ozz
After you set the rubber bumper up you install the bar then let the the jack down.
Can the torsion bar be bad even if it holds the ride height? 02 xterra
I guess it could be bent.
Nice work bud. I gotta do it next.
Don’t give up. Lol.
Never give up.
I was waiting to see how you slide the torsion bar into the front splines mount bracket that part you left out ,I thought this was a step by step video not a step by skip step video
@ernestperry9419 this isn't Onlyfans but I'm going to send you a full refund anyway.
Is this the same as with a Nissan xterra 2004. My
Good video!! But isn’t there a circlip behind that rubber cover??
Nope
they wanted 400.00 at garage.. thank you so much!
Your welcome, thanks for watching and commenting
Thanks for the video !
You got it Mike!
hello, great video but i do have a question. my t-bar snapped but not clean off so there i believe there is still tension9could be very little), although the anchor arm is stuck in place there in no load on the anchor bolt i actually almost have it off. my question is for saftey reason do you take off the t bar in the same position as you assemble it(with the control arm jacked up). and also do you believe your old anchor could have been salvaged, i really do not want to pay 70$ for a new one but the old may be rusted on.
I couldn't reuse the anchor because the torsion bar was rust welded inside it. Control arm in the down position ( tire off the ground) means there is less torsion on the bar. Do not attempt to remove any torsion bar unless all tension is removed beforehand via the anchor arm bolt. If its a clean snap then there is no torsion.
If you take the washer off the adjuster first (slide it back, there’s just enough room) the adjuster will come out of the crossmember without the hammer.
Only if that garbage isn't rust welded together. 😉
Thank you buddy for help me and save my money..God bless you
Good news, your welcome!
I assume the tirsion bar has to come to change the lower control arm? Also do the bars wear out like springs over time?
I have never encountered a worn out torsion bar unless it has snapped. Otherwise it is under constant torque.
My BABY! Drove mine new off the lot in August 01 ! All in all, a pretty damn good 19 years. Next ones gonna be a 4Runner though, Nissan's lost their flaming minds these days. Renault? Really??? Sad.
Hi Ozz. Great Vid! Quick question. When installing the t-bars back in, do you start by mounting it to the front first (lower control arm) then mount and attach the assembly arm? Thanks again and thanks for the vid.
Thanks for your comment. The back of the T-bar is slide in first to the adjustment arm the forward to the control arm. its a little bit tricky but once you are there its easy to fiddle it in.
man, that bar sure did shear off cleanly when it failed, didn't it? nice vids you got going on here.
Thanks for watching and commenting Schazly. Take it easy - Ozz
Great job 👍👌 thanks
You're welcome. 👍
If the torsion bar itself isn't broken, should it be easy to remove? I am worried about not being able to remove the torsion bar itself without cutting or damaging it. For me, the adjuster bolt stripped out because someone didn't install it right before I bought it.
You MUST RELEASE the TENSION before removal! Take it to a professional shop if necessary.
I hope you can help, I'm having a hell of a time finding a tortion bar passenger side. I have the 2002 Nissan Frontier 4x4 SE Crew Cab, V6. Are these parts the same for my vehicle?
Sorry I don't have a part source for the torsion bars. It's going to be a hard one to find, if you saw the part of the video where I talked about sourcing a replacement torsion bar. There are aftermarket companies, an internet search is going to be your best friend! Good luck
Gary Sappier CALMINI has them on there website they are heavy duty ones to lift the front of the truck but if you don’t crank them to hard they should be fine
Ozz.
Pat here again. Just two Q - my one T bar was snapped off or it looks broken off like the one in your Video. Q-1 do I need to replace both sides A and B?. Q-2 should I get a wheel Alignment?
thank you
Pat
+Pat Stevens remember the torsion bars are different part numbers, left and right side. You can just replace one side only. If you do both sides think of it as saving yourself a future headache when the other one snaps. The bar that is NOT snapped will have lots of tension on it, use caution if you chose to change it. Yes you should set the height as close as possible to the 'good' side and get an alignment.
Good way to explain thanks
Thank you for watching and commenting
"don't give up, never give up"
Good advice to get it done!
In my opinion I would have replaced them as a pair, the driver side one looked very rusty, and not long for this world, great video though, really informative like all your videos
both sides would be easier said than done. At the time, replacement torsion bars were almost non existent, even Nissan didnt have them! its been a few years, drivers side has been fine. Thanks for commenting
Ozzstar that was great, learned alot!!
Greetings..hopefully u can tell.me what is the 19mm.bolt.part number..thanks
Any one have any idea of how to get the front of the bar installed into the spline dose it unbolt or just slide in and out? Is there enough room to slide the bar backwards to drop the front out of the splines ? Any help would be great thanks. Great video btw
Did you watch the entire video? 3:25 mark it is clearly shown. The torsion bar has splines and slides in the torque arm which bolts to the lower control arm.
Ozzstar I don’t know how I missed that but thank you for the reply I appreciate it
3.25 shows removal what we wanna see is it installation does the arm go on the bar first or is arm bolted on and bar slides in after
Hey I appreciate it
You're welcome Ken!
Torsion bar front pin, how can I remove this pin when it is rusted I have that problem can someone help me,
Very well done 👍
Thanks!
Where do you got the adjustment measures?
The approximate measurements are in the factory service manual. An alignment shop will be able to level it out for you
Thanks!
You are welcome Tomcat
Awesome!
At 19.26 time . you can see a wrench left on the a bolt , better get that. otherwise great info.
Good attention to detail Carlos! Yes the wrench was removed before I lost it. Thanks for your comment
What you need is a face shield not a heavy gloves. If your grinding/cutting wheel explode your heavy gloves not gonna save your face if debris hit your face . Trust me i know so
You are right, a face shield is the best protection from a cutting wheel that breaks apart. I agree
Thank you very helpful
A pain in the buttt😊
Yea was lucky found at auto wreckers lol
In the thumbnail you are using a 2nd generation xterra, which didn't use torsion bars.
Good eye Nick!
Of course Nissan doesn't care the one part that's most likely to break!
It's never easy!
Pic. Of 2nd gen xterra WHY?
Cause it's nicer looking
You left your wrench under the truck
You are paying attention, that's great. After I filmed that I got the wrench, no lost tools makes for a happy ending. Thanks for commenting!
why is your picture of a 2nd gen xterra? Id be worried if you cant tell the difference in the two models and are giving us "instructional" videos
no worries tietie
Dude, if you lost a large box end wrench I think I know where it is. You're going to need gloves and lube to remove it. Strong is the OCD with this one. Mmmm hmm.
