I’m glad you knew about the SMOD. I was going to comment on that and let you know. That is usually the reason those transmissions die. That Xterra sounds like it has bad timing chain guides too. It’ll run a long time like that but it has that loud whine. It should not whine like that. The fix is replacing the timing chains and guides. There are updated parts available from Nissan that will prevent it from happening again.
I saw a prototype at a car show the year before they launched - picked my own up in '02 and still have it. Still looks and drives like new too. I'm never getting rid of it :)
I have a 2nd Gen that I love...there's certain things to watch out for, but aside from those issues (which were fixed by 2010-2015 models) they're a great vehicle. Mine is lifted on 33's with the rear gutted so I could add a pull out kitchen and sleeping area and storage. I drive it cross country from MN to Moab, UT a couple times a year. I go offroad camping on 4x4 trails on the way down there and back, and do some really epic scenic 4x4 trails while I'm down there camping for a couple weeks. Worth every penny and hour spent for the moments and memories it's given back to me.
@@jacobyo99 On the 1st generation the roof bump with the roof rack made the profile of the truck! Plus the rear seat is elevated a bit and leverages that bump. The few times I have been riding in the back and not driving it was nice and my nieces and nephews certainly appreciated the boost over the year. The bulge in the back was Meh - I was always surprised it took them five years to put the logo in the middle of it.
My husband owns one of these, a 2006, it was the 4X4 of the year that year. What an awesome vehicle! Goes anywhere! We finally had to put some serious money into it, but it was wear and tear. 130K miles. Looks brand new. He gets offers all the time from people checking it out.
After all these years I still love the look of the xterra. My sister had a beautiful one for about 2 months, I cant remember what exactly happened but the repair bill was so high that she just let it go.
That lift saves a lot of work lying on the the floor. Me and My friends use to change out trans without the lift but we were all very young then I could not do that now. Thanks for the Video.
I have a 2008 S 4x4, second owner for 6 years now. It has a 3 inch lift with 33s, ARB bumper, Hard Core PA tire carrier, Baja design ditch lights, cali raised LED light bar and this summer a VK56 (Titan V8) goes in. You should look up the swap, its actually very easy and most of it bolts right up. Not a lot of people know how great these trucks are and how Nissan made a ton of stuff interchangeable.
Checked out the site - doesn't let you browse the site for parts. Instead, what it does is the NUMBER ONE thing I despise about parts sites - a form. A freaking FORM, people! I HATE forms. Well that didn't take long to strike out.
Kool that Duncan got mentioned in this. He's a great guy and a great source for parts for the X! Way to go, Duncan (and JR, of course)! Now if I could only find another X I could afford!

Single best new vehicle we have ever purchased. Trying to talk the wife into getting ready of her over priced POS Jeep Wrangler and getting the New Pro 4X Frontier after a year or two of production.
I love my '02 supercharged 5 speed 4x4 :) I also got to tour that plant in 2003 - was a big group of us Xterra owners. Had a blast and everyone was super nice. That place was huge!

Just picked up a manual 2012 Xterra from original owner for $4500 with 193K miles. Spent it's life in 6th gear going back and forth to Florida. So far a great truck. Same color as this one in the video.
great job !! so happy to see Xterra run on its own ! just wish I had same size shop to work on my Xterra and do all the fixes I need to do on it lol but oh well.. outside it is for now thats where I work on it
had a 2007 Pathfinder.. radiator did the Strawberry milkshake! I noticed your engine has the timing chain issue too! I can hear it whining. I drove mine 100k with that whine, so they do last as long as you keep the oil changed/clean.
You are a blessed guy indeed John Ross. They say if you want to be successful to surround yourself with like minded people who are also successful. Be humble and grateful. Hope your family is well physically.
Hey, after the tranny swap you discovered a classic Xterra mystery problem...nothing when you turn the key. My daughter had an '05 that she loved but it developed the same no start issue. Two shops and then the Nissan dealer couldn't find/fix the problem. The dealer said it was fixed but the next morning it had the same problem. She got her money back from the dealer thankfully. She ended up trading the Xterra cuz she couldn't trust it. The Internet didn't offer a definitive answer. But JR found the fix. Way to go. BTW - Love the vintage Hooker Headers shirt.
When you are ready to sell the Xterra let me know. If the price is right I am interested for my teenagers' first car. Plus I am here in Wichita so no road trip.
Well it sounds like from the opening that this trans was a success. If you have issues down the road you have a ton of parts to swap around or if you want some extra content rebuild the old one on the bench and give it with the truck when you sell it. If not you'll have a ready to go backup. We rebuilt the 727 for my Dart on the driveway in front of it years ago just using a Atra transmission manual and a 50 dollar rebuild master kit plus a new pump and heavy duty cast band.
Like clockwork 99% of the time 11:45pm. Bad hatch struts -- if you ever look at a car that has good struts hood or hatch you should run, run as fast as you can.
I was about to say the same thing lol I did timing chain guides on two xterras they are a pain. Buy original parts. One truck I worked on had them fail with only 60K miles
It does have a fog light harness, but you might need a new fog light switch under the steering wheel bcs the original one won't have fog lights on/off on it. I bypassed it on my Pathfinder with a different harness and switch for less than $15. At the time when I was doing this job, the switch itself was over $100.
I looked at and drove a 2001 1st Gen recently. Owner flat out said he thought the transmission was going out. I checked the fluid and it was clean and not burnt. I noticed the engine revved pretty high starting it up...vacuum leak maybe but would that affect shifting? It doesn't slip, just doesn't shift very well and won't shift past 3rd gear. Shift solenoid I'd guess. I would have bought it but when I put it into 4x4 something is broken up front, I presume axle joint. He wouldn't back down past $900 so I passed with that many issues. I just don't know Nissans well enough to figure if it's worth fixing. I'm all ears for any thoughts/opinions. Oh, it also has the common valve cover gasket leak, has 200k on the clock but doesn't burn oil, no rust, and unless he changed the transmission fluid it was clean and in good shape. I just don't want a project vehicle but need a good 4x4 where I live in the boonies. Thanks!

Fixed for free...after I paid for shipping for a transmission that was given in exchange for advertising and used a lift and transmission Jack to install. So for most anyone else it would cost more and be harder to swap.
They're fine if you source a manual transmission, otherwise any of the Xterra/Frontiers after 2009 where fixed for this issue and don't have issues. If you look at older than 09 then just make sure you test the trans for slippage, if it's SMOD and someone flushed it, it'll slip within a 10 mile trek.
Hey John, just fyi, your audio level is always about 2x louder than every other YT video I watch. I always have to make a mad dash for the remote to turn it down. I've wanted one of these for so long. I can only hope I have enough money set aside when this one goes up for sale. The grey is actually the color I've wanted as I'm just not a yellow guy. I've tried for years to find one around here not already trashed out unsuccessfully. I need another SUV as mine RIPed a year ago and I've been killing my wifes poor minivan ever since. His oil analysis at 180,000 miles came back better then perfect for wear metals.
That has an access cover to get to the converter bolts. I had a frontier at the shop that I had to torch a hole through both covers on the passenger side behind the reinforcement bracket to get to the converter bolts! 34k and they had loosened up. There was no correct way to get to them unless I pulled the transmission.
Don't delete the radiator cooler- just get a non-defective radiator. That actually helps bring the temperature of the ATF up to operating temp and keeps it the right temp when it's really cold outside.
I thought of you this weekend when I was nearly killed by the hood on my 2004 GTO. It would hang for like a minute and then BAM! That's a heavy hood apparently.
Kind of sounds like the timing chain tensioners are worn out. Common problem with 2nd gen Xterra’s. Hard to tell on the video but sounds like a whining sound when you started it?
Josh...great tutorials on this 2007 Xterra transmission swap..You covered every aspect of what I appear to face on my '05 Xterra 4x4. I bought it used 6 months ago, read all about the 'milkshake' issue with the tranny. Mine recently had a small trans leak last week, the check engine light went off so I pulled off and shut it down. I saw trans fluid dripping near the bell housing but I couldn't locate it. Now I'm wondering if the trans has been contaminated by the radiator afterall. I havent seen any sign of strawberry milkshake but shifting has a sort of shutter and sometimes it slips into Neutral.. So, I have to ask...what would Josh do? ...a Jayhawk in Portland..my first car..(1970 Datsun 260Z coupe...I'm a Nissan fan to the end.
I swear on average your videos are 20-30% louder than anything else i watch. If I accidentally start a video before turning it down i get a sonic shockwave
Mine was a $550 2001 2.4L (4-banger) Xterra with 162k & a manual transmission that ate it's countershaft bearings. Pulled a $500 transmission from a 2001 Frontier and bolted it right up good as new. Funny how similar yet totally different this seems. Nice second gen tho, love the color! Do you plan on keeping it?

Needs timing chain guides. They are whining bad.
Yes! It! Does!
Needs everything replaced not a 750$ project anymore Nissan junk
Haha i heard the whine on the first video he did on the xterra
Nice! I think it's worth a bit more than $750 now!
I thought of you this weekend when I was nearly killed by the hood on my 2004 GTO. It would hang for like a minute and then BAM! That's a heavy hood apparently.
It's Alive! Cue "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz
Wow, viewers who are actually helpful - Thanks, Nissan Parts Puller.
Good to see josh back again.
Does Nissan parts puller have 350Z parts?
I think he’ll get whatever parts you need! 💯
Happy to see you working on your own lift.
I swear on average your videos are 20-30% louder than anything else i watch. If I accidentally start a video before turning it down i get a sonic shockwave
Going to need to change the secondary timing belt guides yours are damaged that what is causing the whine sound at start up and when accelerating.
What do you do with the old transmission? Sell it for the core value?
What's with the uncovered conduit box on the Bend Pak? Not very code compliant....
I swear im here every night doing my schoolwork im not gonna need in the future
same
i can tell you you're right, but it does prove you're able to handle a certain complexity. And that's what it's for :)
Nice to see Josh back on the channel!! Keep up the amazing job 👍
I couldn’t wait for this video! Nice job JR! What will be the next Nissan purchase?
Ah Duncan is on the Nissan Frontier forums often. Glad you got a good deal from him.
I use Valvoline Maxlife ATF on all my cars (Mercedes, Volvo, Chevrolet). Works great
