Hi Scotty, I was wondering if you can help me. I’m looking for a minivan or cargo van pretty cheap without a ton of miles that I could easily convert to camping? I don’t know where to start or finding a mechanic near me in Austin/Wimberley area to check it out for me. I would rather by from someone who has kept up with repairs and regular maintenance.

My Xterra is an 2007 4WD, I have put 310,000 miles on it. It has had SMOD which destroyed the transmission and radiator at 120K miles. My mechanic asked me why fix it, I told him it's an Xterra. $3000 for that. then the rear axel failed. He again asked why fix it, I told him it's an xterra...that was $1200. some 200k miles later and it still runs well and gets 15-18mpg. New Plugs, sensors, a throttle clean, hoses, breaks. all less expensive than a car payment. It's an Xterra. And we Xterra owners are LEGION.

It is just as smooth and composed on rough urban streets or rough dirt roads as it is on the interstate. It now has 101,000 miles and it has NEVER needed a single repair beyond replacement of oil, tires, filters. It still has the original factory spark plugs and brakes shoes and linings. Ive had the pleasure of owning 5 Nissan trucks, 3 Xterras and 2 Frontiers. I can vouch for what Scotty said; if you keep the maintenance schedule, you almost cant kill 'em. If you neglect or abuse them, somewhere down the way, they'll stop dead in the road on you. A friend of mine ignored me when i told her that; three months later she had to have a new transmission put in on a 3 yo Sentra. Listen to Scotty! Oh, and why did i get rid of my Nissans? Because i was young and stupid. I now have another Xterra! You CAN learn new tricks as an old dog, lol!

I used to sell these Xterras when I was at Desert Nissan in Vegas from 2006-2007. LOVED this vehicle! Such a easy sell, too. Fun fact about the seating: Rear passenger seats are slightly raised above the front seats (theatre-style) to prevent motion sickness. Rear passengers can look over the heads of front driver/passenger. This stair-step seating configuration was intentional from Nissan.
Plus, all rear cargo areas had the plastic paneling and anchor railing system to latch down recreational items. Some of the front passenger seats even folded down flat so you could stow long items from hatch to windshield.
This generation Xterra was SUCH a great vehicle! Wish I had one.

Only serious complaint was the leaf springs in the rear; they bottom out against the rock hard bump stops too easily. Fixed that with a suspension upgrade after I paid it off. Lots of simple mods available to make the Xterra even better, which I have done. I really haven't come across a better vehicle for what it is intended to be. A few things you've missed about the 2006 XTerra - The timing chains are generally more reliable, but the early Gen2 models with the VQ40 engine had an issue with the chain tensioners and they needed to be replaced. The automatic transmissions are solid - but the ATF is run through the radiator and the early Gen2 models with automatics had a fault in the radiator that allowed it to crack and mix the glycol coolant with the ATF - this kills the transmission with what we call "The Strawberry Milkshake of Death". There are easy ways to bypass the radiator and new radiators have been available that address the manufacturing defect. Finally - it's got 265 bhp, not 210.

Additionally, the oil galley gaskets would blow causing low oil pressure but an easy fix if you were already doing the timing chains. The SMOD issue was fixed with 2010 models. I’ve had to rebuild the transmission after it twice as well, but shifts amazingly after. I’d never get rid of my Xs.

The VDC probably works. If the battery gets disconnected (as in, needed a new battery), the VDC needs to be RESET. Here's how: park the vehicle with a straight away and no traffic in front of you and turn off the vehicle. Restart it, drive slowly and straight for 50 to 100 yards. Suddenly the VDC warning light will turn off indicating it has been reset. Bought my 2008 "Off-Road" version in 2010. Added aluminum off-road bumper, rooftop tent and DIY kitchen. It is a go everywhere rough road monster, six on the floor, 22 mpg all use average. No repairs have been needed. Much better mileage, and no automatic transmission issues to deal with. Nitrogen shocks, low range, Dana axle, lockers, all standard! The off-road bumper protects the plastic radiator.

My first car (which I still have a few years later) I bought was a used 2003 Nissan Xterra. A 100k miles later my X has his 250,516 miles on the odometer. Ive kept up with the maintenance religiously and it runs great still! MPG is garbage but it gets me to work and is great for camping. If Nissan would update and bring them back i would buy it in a heartbeat, i trust my car with my life.

I'm sure this was mentioned... but the 2005+ Xterras have 265 hp. Fantastic SUVs. I manage to get a little over 18 mpg combined with 2" lift and 33s. 6 speed MT is awesome.

I’ve had five Xterras over the years, most recent is a 2006 Off Road, which I love and have had for the longest of any of them. Don’t think I’ll ever sell it. Xterras are awesome and were/are totally underrated.

Fell in love when I first drove my dad's 2007 and couldn't wait to get one for me. How much love I have for my 2013 blue beast can't be stated in words!!! Gas hog, sure, but hands down the best vehicle I've ever owned. ❤

I love my 2008 Xterra (Off-Road model with 6sp manual transmission)! I've only owned it for a couple years and besides regular maintenance, at around 137,000 miles I had to replace the clutch (a bit pricey), both camshaft sensors, and the crankshaft sensor (that one actually stalled the truck). I had a problem where the VDC and SLIP lights would come on, especially when the crankshaft sensor was acting up. They have been off since the replacement - possibly related. I also just did a modification on my rear axle vent - these can clog up over time, putting extra pressure on your seals and wreck them - a costly repair!
I also find that it goes through oil - like a quart every 700-800 miles. Not sure where it's going as I have no leaks and no smoke out the back.

Still driving my 2008. It's perfect for me. I don't drive in the city, it's just for roadtrips, camping, and hauling items. Absolutely love it. I just bought new tires and have zero plans of upgrading anytime soon. Maybe in 5-10 years, they'll bring it back as an "everything you need, nothing you don't" EV!

My Betty yes Betty is the name for my 2013 Xterra Pro-4X manual has 256000 miles now has been a dream and I find myself unwilling to buy a new vehicle because of it. She has not been a problem child in the least, easy to work on, complains 0% of the time, and most importantly has gotten me everywhere I need to go. I flipping love this car and most likely will be buried in it. Been running castrol synthetic (magnetec) every 5K and recently popping the valve covers revealed the engine is nearly brand new. LOVE THIS CAR PEOPLE! Tell Nissan ya want it back as is. Don't get much better than this....

I have an 09 Xterra bought new off the lot. 4X4 6 speed manual. Shortly after I bought it I had the ECU replaced along with coil packs plus shorties. Dyno at the wheels 301HP W 288Ft Torque. Gas mileage sucks but it freaks people out it’s fast and a beast.

Toyota 4Runners in pandemic era 2021/2022 are impossible to pick up reasonably, so I needed the closest alternative. Did a lot of research into the Xterra and Scotty’s approval was the cherry on top. Just picked up a 2014 with 92k miles. Hoping to get her to 300k.

I bought a used 2007 Xterra in 2009 for approximately $16K. At 13 years old, it still works great, though does have rust cancer. Radiator started leaking a couple years ago, but $100, and a couple hours later in the garage it was fixed; never had the strawberry milkshake issue. Otherwise, just routine maintenance.

I bought a 2005 Xterra with 25 miles on it. SE 4x4 version. I've put some money into it. The radiator leaked into the transmission. Upper air intake changed. All 4 catalytic converters, and recently the wheel speed sensors. I had no idea all the things controlled by those sensors. However, it's paid for, it's mine and I love it.
