Kintsugi Wood Shelves- Gold Inlay - Gold Wood Filler
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 гру 2020
- In this video, I use Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese methodology of repairing broken pottery to highlight and accentuate the crack using gold, and incorporate it into 2 Walnut shelves for my living room. It only LOOKS expensive, but this project is inexpensive, simple and looks like it costs a lot!

I really enjoyed the video, but I am thankful for the clever crack edits.

*Top* 👍👍
I had the idea to kintsugi the warn walnut veneer of a dressing table that's been in my family for 100 years, and I'm hoping this technique will work for me! Thanks so much for having this idea too and doing it first.
Let me know how it turns out!
Hard to believe this channel only has 15k followers. Millions of people don't know what they're missing.
Thanks!
I'm curious whether you considered or tested metallic gold powder in epoxy? It would likely fill the cracks more completely, enabling a flush surface -- which may or may not be desireable, and it make not look as much like real gold. I'm planning on doing something similar with a wooden bowl that has a crack running down from the edge. Since it will be used for food, I need a smooth surface that won't catch and hold food goop. I could always fill the rough gold leaf gaps with clear epoxy to retain the gold look but eliminate the tiny gaps that will hold food... Thanks for the info and the great demo!
Epoxy with ‘gold’ would just look like plastic with fakey looking gold crap in it. That’s why the Japanese craftsman still use real gold
Yes. I didn’t like the look, HOWEVER, I almost went with gold leaf in epoxy. The only issue was getting into the tiny tiny opening, so I went with what I did in the video.
Your format was short and sweet and. i liked both. You do you. I’m sure I’ll be back.
👍🏻
Thanks so much for this. I have this wooden desk I'm refreshing, and I want to fill the cracks with gold, and have been noodling on the best way to do it. I don't want to have gold just draining down the cracks into nowhereland... I would use fake gold leaf, not 24k ... way too rich for my blood. I love it! But ... need to fill the cracks first then put the gold leaf on top, I think. You've given me so much of a boost here! Thank you!
Do it yet? Totally want to see how it came out!
Phenomenal, brother
Thanks man!
Genius!!!
Thank you!
Wahoo!!! He's back!! Love the idea! wonder if it could be done in silver. With the CA glue it probably would never tarnish...Oh the ideas are spinning!!! Hope you have a fantastic 2021!!
Hey bro! You’re just need to check the possible chemical reactions between silver and whatever CA glue you’re using. Inevitably, in time, it will tarnish, but encasing it in epoxy might work! Have a great 2021!

Run with it! People like to support good people doing good. I'd love to see what you come up with. Happy new year!

Damn, I wish had some cracked wood around. Maybe I'll go break some, lol. Love this!
Lol! If you REALLY want the look, you could used a dremel tool and just zap out a channel to fill in a piece of wood/furniture.
@@BurkeMakesStuffOh, that's a great idea and I will! I've also got a crack in the wall where the house settled... Why not?!
Have only seen 2 of your videos, I’m sure that will changes soon. Good content, very entertaining and informative. Good job sharing other creators. For your Merch question, I’d say go for it. Just make sure you have plenty of options, and that they are creative as well as affordable. Congrats on the 15k, and now at 16k+ keep up the good work.
I’m glad you’re enjoying them!

Yes, I think "merch" would be great. Instructions for projects that includes brands of products you use to accomplish them. Also, I'd buy a tee-shirt or a hat. Want to see more of what you did with the piano you decomposed ... especially the keyboard. I know a maker who designs bracelets using guitar string. Maybe you could do that with all those hundreds of strings from the piano.
I’m sorry to say the keys are in a box
Presently waiting for the “right” project. My wife and I went back and forth for a while, but couldn’t decide. All in good time.

Okay so I love the gold leaf. I'm going to have to do some experimenting. However, I'm thinking copper leaf and maybe trying to get it to patina in a few areas. I have a kitchen table to fix and I want to add some art and vote elements to that and the chairs.
Go for it!
Good grief. I need to proofread before I send stuff. Art nouveau elements
That's a cool effect. I've mused about using copper to do something similar. Your take on it turned out great.
As far as the merchandise thing goes, I'm on the fence. I have several makers I follow because I like their content. I'll use April as an example since you mentioned her. She sells wearable items, etc. with her logo in them as well as her conversion chart wall hangers. Now, I'm not going to buy a hat, shirt, or sticker from her, but I would buy a conversion chart, because it's something that serves a utility to me. If she popped a sticker in the box with the order, then I'd smile and stick it somewhere in the shop. Now, that's just me. I'm not a "fan" of April per se, but I'm really not the fan type. I'd much rather have a beer with you and get to know you as a person than get your autograph and parade around in clothes with your name on them. Now, if you came out with a magnetic cup holder or pencil holder that mounts on my table saw, then I might bite. 😂
When the world calms down a bit, I’d be absolutely honored to have a beer with you! Lol

Just found your channel. You're awesome dude! Stealing your method hopefully
Thank you so much for saying that! I really appreciate it! Welcome!
Hi i think this is a great idea. Maybe if there are many cracks and deep cracks clear resin could be used to fill the gap then add gold leaf and add more resin on top. Or add gold leaf to the resin and pour it in. !!
yEs!!!!! That would look amazing!
Question pls. I have wood pistol grips with some letters engraved on them. Letters are not really deep as these piece you have there. Will the gold leaf still dried really good , also did u spreay the bottom coat first and then the top coat bond after on top of the gold leaf
Hi. Not sure this would work in something as exacting as pistol grips.
Nice, definitely something I'd be interested to try out in future projects. Thanks! :)
About merch, probably best to reach out to other youtubers who are already doing it and get their input in regards to economy, extra work, pitfalls to avoid, etc
Smart!!! Awesome! Thanks.
Glad you found the video valuable!

Would gold fine filings and this ca glue accomplish the same thing?
It would read a little “grainy, but in terms of taking up space, yes.
…it would be quite a bit more expensive though.
I freeze wood to -20⁰F, apply two part epoxy and hammer in gold or silver dead soft wire before heating the wood to 45⁰f and wetting it with water and using a heat gun on low to swell the grain.
Why the temp changes?
@@BurkeMakesStuff I'm just assuming here, but I think they're relying on the expansion and contraction of the wood as the temperature changes to secure the wire.
how do you get it to -20?
Curious where I could find wood bowls to do this to?
Hmmmm. If you look up work turning online/Facebook/Instagram you can find many people & groups that do it. Most of them throw away cracked bowls from what I understand. May be an easy way to get them for free/cheap
Why not use gold powder pigment in epoxy?
Because I had Starbond and goldleaf on hand. I’m sure you could use epoxy and pigment. Not sure it would look as good though, as pigment in epoxy looks different than the texture provided by the “stuffed” gold leaf. I like it, but do whatever you like!
be cool to do this in white/clearish marble, the marble that looks like the quartz in which gold is present.. be cool
That would look amazing against a dark wood like Black Walnut!
Can I ask you, what type of wood is this?
This is Walnut, but yes, as long as you stabilize it, this will work with any wood.
Did you end up doing merch!? I think you should
I have a TON of ideas, but haven’t yet. Have to research even where to start. Very out of my “wheel house.”

Hi. What?
Love your videos and this one has given me some ideas to try in the future. If you decide to do merchandise, check out Bunker Branding. They do merch for a number of UA-cam folks. The people that own it are Matt and Mere Carriker. Matt has several channels himself, Off The Ranch, Vet Ranch (he's a veterinarian) and Demo Ranch. I have no affiliation with them just know about the company. Good luck with the project if you go that way. No matter what, don't stop with the videos!
Demo ranch!!!!! I totally forgot about that channel. I used to binge his stuff. Awesome content! Thanks for checking out the video!

How’s the craic. ☘️🇮🇪👍
The fun is doing well…. As is the crack. Lol
Some thoughts here on the 3 laws of Merch.
1: Sell merch if the merch inspires you, and you enjoy making/designing it.
2: Sell merch that inspires others, so long as it doesn’t interfere with law #1.
3: Design and make merch as an extension of your channel’s vision and mission statement, so long as it doesn’t interfere with laws #1 & 2.
Thank you! Those rules will be followed!

Yes, make merchandise. I am a construction worker, and best sellers are t-shirts with pockets, long sleeve t-shirts with pockets (job site safety requirements). Basically, if you can wear it in the spring, summer or fall, it sells. Stay away from winter clothing, it doesn't sell quite as fast. You need to offer medium through 2XL. Large and XL will be your best sellers.
Thanks!

No on major merch. If you want to go to route of like rex kruger/katz and do tools that makes sense. But i think moving $100 of shirts a month or less...is that worth it. When channels at 1m subscribers then the economy of scale makes more sense but id still not do hats shirts. Stickers for toolboxes card scrapers or something like that seems more valuable. Should be gearing audience to patreon as you grow. Build community and bring us 10$ of value for $5 a month. Free plan here there but most things i join are to ask for help and seek feedback.

Sorry, it doesn’t really work as you still have huge cracks
It’s stabilized under the wood 100%
It works perfectly. What do you mean?
So it starts at 5 minutes in.
That’s been the biggest negative comment I’ve gotten. And though it’s only by a few, I hear you. Gonna put out a 3-4 minute version of the whole video for those that prefer I just hop right in.
@@BurkeMakesStuff Its not negative, its just a fact, lol. At 71 I dont have a lot of time for all the fluff. My time is precious to me, and im sure it is for others too.
Wow. Well you have 3 tools at your disposal. 1-on settings you can set the speed at which you watch the video 2-you can skip ahead 10 seconds at a time with the > key and 3-you can scroll past. It always amazes me that people take time to complain to a maker about FREE CONTENT. Maybe a thank you? @@iteeshollow
