The blowtorch was invented in the very late 18th century. They were quite popular and lots of patents were filed for new designs by the mid-19th century, so it's historically accurate!

UA-cam was made for creative people like you. I never thought I would watch every second of a Victorian under dress chair DIY but here I am. Great job.
I'm thinking this certainly wouldn't be an "everyday" item of wear, but it would really come in handy for picnics, garden parties, outdoor concerts, etc. The kind of thing where people usually stand around and have either limited seating, or sit on the ground. It would also be very useful for "ladies of a certain age" who tire quickly when out shopping, and may need a seat when none are available. Overall, I think it could be a discreetly incredibly useful device to have! So convenient!
I agree, though if going to a picnic or concert does that mean that any gentleman companions are carrying chairs, or sitting on the ground? Is the lady presiding over the event from atop her bustle chair with the plebeian down below?
Now I'm sad bustles aren't in fashion anymore... Maybe we can just make this fashionable on its own! People just walking around with chairs hanging off of their behinds sounds lovely.
Would be immensely convenient to those who need a wheelchair only part of the time! A walker does something similar but is definitely less good for walking up stairs.
@serendipidus1YEAH! It's been really nice ever since I started looking into different eras. I've been wearing handmade 1800s shirts and shoes for years now. I feel like my closet has become a mismash of thrifting, historical revival and 80s goth. XDD

I have designed a lot of boots and heels but I unfortunately don't have the materials or know-how to do more just yet. And I love turnshoes!! Did you use Morgan's video?? I wanted to make some of those next, since they seem like something I could make and they're very cute.
One thing that has just amazed me even more than Morgan's Bustle Chair....the fact that the members of this community are apparently actually reading the comments of other people and liking them. "Today we'll be making a 21st century invention called the selfie stick! How did they attaxh the digital camera? My arm is tired! Oh... they used smart phones. They are more light weight. What a difference 10-20 years make!" (When someone mixes 1880s and 1900s together...)
@@tiffytattoo2450 Digital cameras weren't a thing commercially until 1988 and even then most people still used film cameras. It wasn't really until the early 2000s when digital cameras became more common for lots of people to have. So change the dates to mixing the 1980s and 2000s together. ;)

Think corner and one edge is 'plain' seam and the other is bound with ribbon that goes over the front and back of it, so you slot the plain seam into the corner of the bound seam.. i think best way i can describe it as a seam Or if you are familiar with anatomy, think joint: one ball and one socket, but in the lap joint its a square peg as the ball and a equally square hole as the socket
Hege Valle not quite. I think what you're describing is the mortise and tennon. The mortise is a rectangular hole and the tennon is the shaved down rectangular tongue sticking off the end of the other piece that fits perfectly inside the mortise to create a really strong joint. A lap joint, also known as a half-lap, is when you have two pieces of the same thickness and you remove half the thickness of each on opposite sides so that when they are put together the overlapped sections is the same thickness as the rest of each piece. I can't really think of an analog in sewing because I can't think of any seams where you'd remove half the thickness of the fabric since that would pretty much destroy the structural integrity of it.
@@auditoryeden Makes me think of mitred corners on things but that's probably because I do mine badly as I forget how/when to do them and come back later to try and make it look nice.

Thank you for actually showing how to pin your vest together. I’ve tried to find information on this for years and have never found any help. All the videos I’ve seen have fingers and hands in the way during the actual pinning, and written instructions just say “pin it together” or “pin into the corset/stays”. For someone who’s never seen pins which hold things together while keeping everything but the heads invisible, this was so wonderful and thank you so, so much for this!! Oh, and I love the chair, too. I remember seeing that patent in a “how silly were people in history book” when I was 9 and always thought it was brilliant.
I can actually see this as being useful and even needed. As my mother has aged - she’s 87 now - she tires more easily and finding a place for her to sit is always a chore. We had to get her a walker with a seat. Given that they walked a lot more than we do, and wore more weight in clothing, I can see some enterprising Victorian son saying “here mom let’s just build you something to sit on ‘

Now that you’ve put the thought into head, I seriously want to see what happens.
how would you sit on the plane
I'd gracefully shimmy out, mean mugging anyone who looks and then stow it in the overhead compartment.
That was my first thought. What would security say. And all those pins.
Omg, that’s more than a mental image, that an SNL skit! 😂😂
The pinning at the bodice is actually very nice. Looks like teeny tiny pearl buttons. Very pretty
It was amazing
I need to learn how to use them and then it's over for the button factory
I thought so too!
Yes I wish I could pin a garment that way. I'd love to see a video about doing that. In more detail
A woman sitting down on her bustle feels like a running gag from a Mel Brooks movie.
it reminds me of when david niven gets stuck in the chair in "the bishop's wife"!! XD
you could totally have a secret stash under the seat of this thing, it would be brilliant
"we can do this the victorian way!" *cuts to an entire BLOWTORCH
The blowtorch was invented in the very late 18th century. They were quite popular and lots of patents were filed for new designs by the mid-19th century, so it's historically accurate!
When there are no seats left on the bus or train and you sit down on your bustle chair, can you see the looks of jealousy from others who have to stand? I NEED one.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Pregnant Lady. I'd give you my seat if I could, but I'm very attached to it."
I doubt they would have any clue how she was sitting. Haha!
@@sadiejosiemom Yes they would guess extreme thigh muscles perhaps...
Of couse you would need a maid to carry it around for you.
No,you wont! Didnt realise it was fixed on!!
Yes!!! This is so much better than me misusing my backpack on full trains....
Me, coming home after spending 8 hours in the library, reading travel journals from between 1600 and 1850: Ah yes, the weekend, let's watch some youtube to pull me back into the mordern times.
Morgan: I'm making a Victorian Folding Chair for under your skirts!
Me: Well... ok then, let's stay 100+ years in the past then
Mr Donner's face at 11:48 is so proud. He's like, "that's my lady!"
So adorable (ó﹏ò。)
UA-cam was made for creative people like you. I never thought I would watch every second of a Victorian under dress chair DIY but here I am. Great job.
Very much a fun episode.
When are we going to get the episode “Morgan adds closures to all the items she has never finished”?
NEVER! 😜
@@MorganDonner you and Bernadette Banner with your lack of closures 😅
@@MorganDonner Please Morgan, give us the closure we need! :D
Who needs closures. Not me.
I love how expertly she PINNED that bodice shut. Medieval wizardry, to be sure.
Is the lady presiding over the event from atop her bustle chair with the plebeian down below?
its true that i'm only in my 20's, but im quite sure that I am "ladies of a certain age" who tire quickly when out shopping
Someone else suggested to add wheels to the bottom- invisible wheelchair! As a wheelchair user, I really want to try it!
In the modern day this could also come in handy i those overcrowded lecture theatres.
@@katherinemorelle7115 as an engineering student I will build it if you can get the funds for materials.
Now I'm sad bustles aren't in fashion anymore... Maybe we can just make this fashionable on its own! People just walking around with chairs hanging off of their behinds sounds lovely.
New fashion trend...
Would be immensely convenient to those who need a wheelchair only part of the time! A walker does something similar but is definitely less good for walking up stairs.
"What's that? An outdoor concert??
Great!! I'll wear my late-Victorian chair dress!!"
My friends: _"¿¿Qué??"_
@serendipidus1YEAH! It's been really nice ever since I started looking into different eras. I've been wearing handmade 1800s shirts and shoes for years now. I feel like my closet has become a mismash of thrifting, historical revival and 80s goth. XDD
@serendipidus1 My soul belongs to the 80s. XD I don't make anything other than leather slippers. I'm sorry to get you excited. #^-^;# The handmade shoes I wear are pikes which I ordered from an online store based in the UK.
And the arches in them are lovely! My only complaint is that the heels have not much room for me to put taps on the bottom to protect the heel.
I've >never< seen such interaction at this level in >any< other UA-cam Community! Between the chair and this phenomenon...I am thoroughly astounded and nearly speechless right now! (Yes, I've read and liked copious comments, myself....quite a witty group we have here!)
А тем более русские, которые ни слова не понимают😁, но всё же смотрят с огромным удовольствием ♥️🤗
That part where she dances at the end. LOL! I also really enjoyed that she provided the weight of the clothing. That is fascinating.
All I can imagine is the future UA-camr equivalent 200 years in the future going: "Today we will be making a 21st century invention based off the patent! They called it HEELYS!"
"Today we'll be making a 21st century invention called the selfie stick! How did they attaxh the digital camera? My arm is tired!
Oh... they used smart phones. They are more light weight. What a difference 10-20 years make!"
(When someone mixes 1880s and 1900s together...)
@@tiffytattoo2450 Digital cameras weren't a thing commercially until 1988 and even then most people still used film cameras. It wasn't really until the early 2000s when digital cameras became more common for lots of people to have. So change the dates to mixing the 1980s and 2000s together. ;)
"do you want to come see me put on my chair"
That's a brand new sentence if I've ever heard one!
I loved how you found this old patent and just went "yes I would like to make this" and then produced a video that was full of fun and silly shenanigans to help bring laughs in this time of plague.
This feels like an 1880s version of an “as seen on TV” product.
Is Morgan a cat? "It fits. I sits. " 😂👍❤️
Also, they're the cutest couple!!!
"Birthday bandsaw" You're the cutest and that is absolutely the vibe.
Well that's just for one person, imagine having this under a 1700's pannier! You could have seats for a whole group! 🙈😂
That’s a whole sofa
It reminds me a little bit of the strapon milking stool an old boss if mine wore while milking the cows.
An impressive mix of metal working, wood working, leather working, and sewing
As someone who can't stand up or walk around for long periods of time without pain, this seems amazing and I now wish I could wear a bustle without being stared at...
If you make a habit of it, people will eventually stop staring.
You can you just need the appropriate skirts and bodice to go with it
“I don’t remember putting in hooks and eyes”
‘t Was the shop ghost!
Okay but this is a game changer! Also I love “I fits I sits”
Very cat.
Gotta love those bustle skirts...you can literally make a whole chair disappear under them.
Ingenius invention though and cudos to you and Mr. Donner, for actually making one.
I feel like Noelle is already scribbling down all the numbers and engineering details so by post-Covid Costume College she'll show up in her Hogwarts Express Bustle Gown and plant herself in the middle of the room, no chair needed. 😂💜
No
I was thinking of her too, what she would think of
The various layers made the chair disappear and it seemed uncomplicated to sit down - I was doubtful of the usefulness of the whole thing until you sat down wherever you wanted with such ease. I definitely need that thing!
This would be so perfect for renaissance faires, if those ever come back (damn you, Covid). It would be so convenient, and probably wow a lot of people lol
Just came back from the renaissance faire (in Texas) - I agree, this contraption would have been amazing!
@@jessicaw8941 Nice!! I live in Utah and we have some of the highest number of covid cases in the country, so no ren faires for us until people start doing what they're supposed to do lol.
@@lilivic Oof. People had to wear masks and whatnot and TRF encouraged it by holding mask contests every day (I even won tickets for next season by participating!)
Best of luck to you and yours in this time of plague and pestilence. ❤️❤️❤️
Exactly what I was thinking! Such an amazing idea for the long strolls and crowded bench areas.
@@jessicaw8941 What is TRF? What is a mask contest? I am very curious!
Mr. Morgan Donner: “I’m going to make a lap joint.”
Me: “...could you please explain that in terms of seams?”
Think corner and one edge is 'plain' seam and the other is bound with ribbon that goes over the front and back of it, so you slot the plain seam into the corner of the bound seam.. i think best way i can describe it as a seam
Or if you are familiar with anatomy, think joint: one ball and one socket, but in the lap joint its a square peg as the ball and a equally square hole as the socket
Probably like when you cut the excess out of corners
@@alexreith4877 I agree, there's no real equivalent to a lap joint in sewing.
@@auditoryeden Makes me think of mitred corners on things but that's probably because I do mine badly as I forget how/when to do them and come back later to try and make it look nice.
This was so much fun! Well done!!! The victorians also had a raincoat that turned into a boat, so now I want to know if you could sit on a bustle chair while fishing from a raincoat boat. 🤔🤣
That... sounds amazing. I must research!
sounds like your ground would be too unstable to sit a chair on tho
I'm sorry... They WHAT?!
Evie! Wasn't expecting to find you here!
@@summerfoley2481 😁 👋 The rabbit hole goes deep doesn't it???
Lol I think this is genius! No more leaning against walls or sitting on the floor if you're tiered and can't find somewhere to sit!
P.S. I really loved how when you did a full test of the chair it looked like some sort of magic trick
So fun watching you two work together! Bustle chair seems completely on-brand for the era - *almost* a good idea, but kind of impractical. I love it.
Seeing you sit down on "nothing" is the trippiest thing I've seen in a while. I love it.
We violin and orchestra teachers always try to get our students to sit in their ‘kangaroo tail.’ I need to add ‘sit on your bustle’ to my sayings. Also since I teach at an all girls school, I could have a whole marching orchestra with bustle chairs built into their concert uniform....hmmm. 😂
😂 I love that idea 🤣
Set up would be so fast
That would be awesome
@@weka6533 right?? especially if the music was memorized!
Sounds very workable
Thank you for actually showing how to pin your vest together. I’ve tried to find information on this for years and have never found any help. All the videos I’ve seen have fingers and hands in the way during the actual pinning, and written instructions just say “pin it together” or “pin into the corset/stays”. For someone who’s never seen pins which hold things together while keeping everything but the heads invisible, this was so wonderful and thank you so, so much for this!!
Oh, and I love the chair, too. I remember seeing that patent in a “how silly were people in history book” when I was 9 and always thought it was brilliant.
Hunt a Killer comes in the mail but the real mystery is why is Mister Donner’s wood shop packed away?? SOLVE THE MYSTERY!!
Why do I keep coming back for the "very excite" A-frame and the adorable metal dragon going rawr?
I don't know. BUT I DO.
I didnt know aiming for pockets in my clothes was aiming low. Man I definitely want a skirt chair!
It really looks so effortless when you sit! Also completely unexpected, you really wouldn't guess there was a chair instead of a typical bustle!
“Birthday band saw” you are grown-ass woman goals
I'm glad I'm not the only woman in skirts who wants power tools for my birthday!
I was in awe at the elegance
I can actually see this as being useful and even needed. As my mother has aged - she’s 87 now - she tires more easily and finding a place for her to sit is always a chore. We had to get her a walker with a seat. Given that they walked a lot more than we do, and wore more weight in clothing, I can see some enterprising Victorian son saying “here mom let’s just build you something to sit on
‘
I have a friend who has POTS who would genuinely be so, so thankful if they could have such a thing today. If only.
Apparently our pandemic crafts are reaching the baroque stage. I made a teacup holster this week. And then there’s [gestures]...this.
Sorry, what? Teacup holster? Wouldn’t that spill tea all over the wearer the moment they made an abrupt movement?
@@ragnkja ‘Tis for carrying your tea set when not in use. In a very steam punky way. If you plug the phrase into Etsy you’ll see a selection. I collect tea cups from antique shops, so I had lots to play around with. 🍵

I love projects with Mr. Donner!
Also, as a chronically ill lady who needs to sit often and sometimes unexpectedly, this seems exceptionally useful to me. 😄
I want you to know I spontaneously applauded with great enthusiasm when you sat down in the bookstore. That alone made the chair totally worth it! 😍
You never fail to astonish me Morgan Donner. That collab with your husband is even better. Made me also wonder how often he gets to see you when you are in the sewing room working on a project. Then again: under the pandemic it might be best to have such a distraction like a sewing project. Or making a weird Victorian invention like a bustle chair.
Watching the two of them working on a Victorian bustle chair has added a new item on my relationship goals list for finding a significant other.
This was amazing. I was so surprised when the chair just kind of disappeared beneath the skirts. What a fun invention. I also loved seeing more wood/metal work :D (Sidenote: please wear safety glasses when working on things that can cause wood or metal shrapnel.)
This was fantastic! I would definitely not mind seeing more historic woodshopping with Mr. Donner.
I am howling at the thought of what went on in people's heads when you got up and there was no chair to be seen.
They just thought she was sitting on 12 pounds of stiff cloth and whale bone.
1. This whole project was hilarious and now I want one!
2. I loved watching you and your husband working together. You remind me so much of my husband and I! Very sweet and adorable watching you two work out designs together.
There NEEDS to be a modern version of this!!! Especially right now, my local shopping centre, and no doubt others world wide, took away most of the benches cos of social distancing. It's perfect for long shopping trips, days out, picnics for the fussy!, certain cosplays, festivals/ploughing matches/dog shows/events in fields... all the queuing we have to do right now!
Something light that folds up a little bit maybe? that can be strapped around your jeans. I NEED ONE! Not that I'm going anywhere fun right now.
I'm too excited by this, I feel like I've had too much sugar :-p
I saw this invention posted in a FB group and we all we got a good giggle at the absurdity of it...
I am not giggling now. My jaw dropped ti the floor when I saw the title and thought, "Holy moley, she did it!!"
You literally walked right by the store I work at and I’m so mad I missed seeing this marvelous contraption in person!
Oh how frustrating!
How do you go to the bathroom in this Morgan? 😂😋 (Also you continue to impress the shit out of me - like holy shit this is amazing!)
LOL DARN YOU ABBBBBY! Not EVERY Victorian video needs a bathroom question! 😂
(For those of you that really must know:
Back then - Chamberpot or similar
Now - same solution as getting into the car, take it off and put it back on after)
While we may not carry around a chamber pot anymore, there are modern funnel shaped devices designed to enable women to urinate whilst standing. One is called Tinkle Belle. I imagine one could be hidden under voluminous skirts until needed.
@@MorganDonner I'm so irritated. I've literally responded to your comment twice now! grrr - My response is this: Please drill a hole in your seat and take it to a public toilet, cause I that's the experiments that the world needs to see. 🤣

“Birthday Band Saw.” Morgan Donner you are my people. 😂 This looks stunning!
Madness, pure madness!! Wow! Much skill the Donners! And, you'll notice that not only did Morgan put on her shoes AFTER she was completely dressed, but also while having a chair strapped to her!
Why I feel like starting to wear daily 1880's clothes so I'll be able to bring a chair everywhere lol
Morgan's dress covered in beakers is legendary. Also, I love seeing Morgan and Mr Donner together. Plus, it's super inspiring to see her be so handy with tools. I definitely must up my game!
I love how well it is ‘hidden’ in the skirts, and it looks amazing when you just decide to sit down.
People must’ve looked twice when they saw a Victorian-style lady sit down sans chair and then pop her legs over each other.
And side note, you and Mr Donner look stinkin’ cute together, clearly both loving the idea of a silly Victorian project together.
What a fantastic invention! We are not allowed to sit anywhere in the mall due to Covid restrictions so that would be so wonderful to have after hours of walking and wanting to sit down and not being able to. I would totally order one of these!!!🥰
When you sit, it looks like some “moveobjects_on” a chair from under you while playing The Sims.
