This collab is braking my brain. I don't know why but my brain had previously decided that Angela was very small and Morgan was tallish.......... This is clearly not the case.
I was so excited when I saw this pop up on my feed. I enjoy the content of both ladies, and just this month, I've started to learn to sew. I'm jealous of Angela's height! I have short corgi legs, a long torso, and am barrel chested 😂
I love how Angela is an OG on UA-cam. She was one of the first people I was following on Tumblr, when she was an actual child in her bedroom sewing some awesome shit that she just kind of made up as she went. Her resourcefulness and patience stood out to me, and I didn’t really get into following anyone in historical costume on UA-cam until way later, where I was delighted to recognize her and realize she was so successful in the community!
I, too, found Angela long ago! I was so amazed at what this kid was turning out while attending high school! Extremely impressive and she just gets better and better!
Turned out great! Hilariously in the thumbnail since Angela is wearing a very Morgan outfit, I failed to notice the green hair and assumed it was Morgan v Morgan 😂
I love the side by side comparison of drafting and draping. And how you combined the good from both. This gown is stunning. Love the fun explorations you take us on Morgan.
When I started sewing I thought drafting seemed terribly intimidating while draping looked intuitive. But once I tried them I found drafting felt like a magical spell to make flat things have shape, while draping was more like slippy slidey guess work. Also, bodice and pant blocks just seemed like the way to go for me. I highly recommend it to anyone with nonstandard proportions.
It’s so different to medieval sewing, they had really long straight seams, and this is heaps of small ones, tiny dart here tiny dart there, here a dart there a dart everywhere a dart dart! 😂😂😂😂 I’m getting Anne of green gables vibes from that sweater 😊
To be clear, there is no such thing as "the right body" for a historical period. That's what the support garments are there for. And I think Morgan looks amazing in every period that she's tried. But Man! Something about the Edwardian shit waist and skirt combo! That's it for me! I love it so much!
I know Angela has said before that she’s tall but it’s hard to understand until you see her next to someone else. Which I realize I’ve never seen before. I really love this dress. It’s amazing 🤩 Y’all did an amazing job
I thought the final would be in the white-cream colour range, but then you bring out the classic Morgan Donner red :D. Those velvet roses are gorgeous! That bodice triangle pocket thing is also inventive, glad to see it works!
This was very interesting to see your process and the resulting gown is wonderful. With respect to you both, for me personally, Angela's draping is beyond amazing. Something about her approach creates a very flattering, sumptuous shape and brings out the beauty of the fabrics. She would have been in BIG demand during this time period. I hope she has an equally gifted friend to drape her gowns. Side story .. my mother always told me to choose the hair stylist with the worst hair cut in a salon because they were the gifted ones cutting everyone else's hair. Of course, I expect ALL the ball gowns at the grand event will be works of art and look forward to seeing videos and stills.
I love Angela clayton, she is the number one sewing people on the internet, she is amazing, I miss her channel so much. She should have her own atelier in Paris, or New York would be wonderful. Hope she is good.
The gown looks STUNNING 🤩 The velvet additions are so elegant and stately! Fabulous work! And your up-do is so cute ☺️ I love the way the curly bangs frame your face
I love both draping and drafting equally! For me they serve very different purposes. But draping tends to be a lot faster and you have a lot more control so it’s good for things with seams that need to flatter. But drafting is great for skirts and pants.
!!!!!!!!! That dress is AMAZING! I'm SO impressed! Can't wait to get to see everyone at the ball! Any chance you could do a tutorial on the roses when you get back? HAVE SO MUCH FUN AT THE BALL!!!!
I do beadwork & was very glad you went with the plyers to crunch the excess. I use light weight fire line or regular beading thread, depending on the project, so not cutting the thread with bead crunching can be tricky. I would definitely save a few scraps to cut replacements beads from though. It's so pretty on the garment! Absolutely love the blouses & the bicycle sweater! Your dress turned out fantastic in the end.
Gorgeous!!!! I've loved seeing you all making your fancy ball dresses while I sew what is turning out to be yet another shapeless grey sack of a dress! :D (it's fine, shapeless grey sack is 100% my preferred outfit)
first impression when you first tried the mockups: the drafted one looked more "right" in a way, like it looks like how an article of clothing "should" look (emphasis on the quotation marks) but the draped on looked like it was a part of you, it kinda looks like those touched up photos. I guess the drafted bodice looks more like tailor's work and the draped looks more haute couture (i think it's because it their respective trades prefered method) edit: i think my most imediate thought was the draped version has it's "soul" already it has that little je-ne-sais-quoi that pulls me into a project that i can't put into words and other people don't really see
The best way to break beads is to insert a push pin into the hole and press against a rubbery surface (ie an eraser). This guards against cutting the thread used to sew to the base fabric. As a beaded, using pliers was the first method we used, and the push pin/eraser method evolved for tightly woven beads. By far superior results. Info for next time!
What a beautiful dress! I'm looking forward to seeing the completed look. This is the kind of dress that calls for some really bold costume jewelry, the type of over the top "dripping with jewels" stuff no one wears anymore. Ah, the ball sounds really fun.
I've been missing seeing Angela. She was my first person to watch on UA-cam and I was hooked. Then I learned about you Morgan and the both of you motivated me to get sewing. Sewing cheers me up. When this 50ish me grows up I want to be just like the both of you. :)
I bet watching Angela's incredible talent at work was incredible to see. I'd be trying to soak up every single bit of knowledge she had haha. You're both so cool!
If I had had a dress form when I was doing all my creating nothing would have stopped me. I find your videos fascinating. I don't get to do much anymore.
Morgan this was a stunning video, and the dress is very much giving me Scottish glamour vibes for some reason xx :) loved this so much, hope you have an amazing time!! You & Angela nailed the look!
I love these collaborations with Angela! I'm a long time fan of her channel, I enjoy the comparison of different methods, and it's interesting to hear Morgan's description of Angela's process.
This is definitely one of my top 4 UA-cam channels alongside Tom Scott, Barry Lewis and Townsends 🥰 Literally my comfort channel, I'll just grab a cuppa and sit back. It brings me joy. I'm so glad you've had so much success with it so far 😊 Side note - the hair at 19:45 is hella cute.
Thank you for putting the Instagram is for everyone and reminding us that we'd be able to see real time pictures there! Your garment is so beautiful! The dress and that incredible V pocket at the waist was so creative! It was also really fun to see Angela with you! I tend to see myself as more a draper, than a drafter. 😊 Fun video!
Personally, I am a very chaotic sewer. I use just about every single method out there in all of my projects- draping, drafting, using pattern websites and using past patterns. I somehow always manage to make the garment perfectly even though I have no mannequin, no mock-ups, a hate for anything maths and only one year of experience in sewing myself clothes. I like to think I’m just very lucky.
I NEED ANGELA'S DRESS AND BELT. she was such an inspiration all those years ago for the evolution of my style as vintage inspired but also whimsically modern :)
Morgan, you created an absolutely incredible gown! That sparky overlay on the skit combined with the gorgeous red velvet accent of the bodice. Chef’s kiss! I love that late bustle period too. Absolutely lovely!
draping definitely wins for me! in my experience, I feel like most victorian ball gowns are more manageable when you work from a 3D form as opposed to flat - maybe tailored garments are the exception. there's just so many curves and it's so fitted that it really seems to work out better with draping

I have noticed in similar recent videos the use of the term flat lining. When I learned how to sew 20 years ago what you are doing here was called underlining.
I know so many hours of work and years of skill goes into the finished ballgown, but I absolutely love how it reminds me of dress-up. I enjoyed cosplaying before I knew the term cosplay. Looking forward to seeing all the beautiful gowns on social media!
I’m not sure you should apologize for not understanding Victorian tailoring! Goodness! That dress would cost a bundle today! Especially with all the finishing you did in the seams! My MOther bought a dress in Paris as a splurge in 1976 when she visited Paris after almost 40 years. It cost her over $4000.00 CDN equivalvent While we were still on the Gold Standard! Probably close to $10-15K today! And it was so dificult to get her into it. It was gorgeous, but so fussy to don! Your “creation” could be worn today at any beautiful ceremonial Ball with pride and pleasure ! Kudos Morgan !
Morgan, I have watched this video several times and must say this is one of, if not THE best, most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. The ivory with the beaded overlay is breathtaking. However as a lifelong lover of velvet the crowning touch is the burgundy velvet. Absolutely breath taking. I hope you had a wonderful time at the ball.
Ive been deep in a creative slump for a while, my sewing buddy (my grandma) sadly died a few weeks back and along with my grief the lack of a body double has been taking a massive toll on my motivation and drive. But watching your channel has really helped me get going and actually get going on the projects I want to do. Thank you ao much for your content and I really look forward to whatever you decide to make in the future
Yay, Angela!! What a great crossover! I’m so glad UA-cam has led to actual, real life friendships. Really, really enjoyed watching you both troubleshoot working with the embroidered fabric. Since historically the embroidery would have been done after the sewing, it was both informative and fascinating to see how you handled using pre-embroidered fabric for a Victorian skirt.
I watch a lot of Gunnar Deatherage's videos and mystify is a great word for it! How on Earth someone can see a fabric, begin pinning it on a mannequin, and it turn out STUNNING... now granted, we don't get to see a lot of the cussing and the thousands of hours of education that went into it, but it is still absolutely magical to watch!
First, that gown is incredibly beautiful! And second , thanks for all the inspiration and tips! Over the weekend I “drafted” culottes and made three for my daughters and niece! You are a huge part of why I felt prepared to do that.
The deep crimson velvet is very striking against the cream! A tip for anyone working with beaded fabric: smashing the beads can damage the thread that holds them on, so if you're paranoid like me, stitch through the beads for an inch or so right next to the denuded sections to make sure the original thread stays put.
What a beautiful dress! I love the bodice with the integrated sequinned fabric between the velvet. And that additional long tailed bow on the side is just the perfect amount of color for the bottom half. Lovely work! Hope we get to see more Morgan/Angela team ups in future!
It is fun to see you work with Angela, love the hair by the way. You really worked on your gown right down to the wire! The dress looked amazing. Another triumph.
32:53 that's such a good way to do the cross over panel with a center front closure with a downward peak at the center front! I think I'll be using this method for an upcoming 1890s ballgown myself!
Fascinating that you used tarlatan in the dress. I get that it's just starched fabric that could be used in numerous ways, but I always think of etching or print making. It's used to gently wipe away excess ink before making a print.
This collab is braking my brain. I don't know why but my brain had previously decided that Angela was very small and Morgan was tallish.......... This is clearly not the case.
At a guess seeing them together, Morgan is tallish and Angela is Quite Tall? So you might be half right?

Turned out great! Hilariously in the thumbnail since Angela is wearing a very Morgan outfit, I failed to notice the green hair and assumed it was Morgan v Morgan 😂
Me too!
