We're Planting Corn with a John Deere 7230R | How a Corn Planter Works | Tractor Video

- In this tractor video we're planting corn in California! Learn how this John Deere, chain-driven, corn planter works as it's being pulled by a 7230R tractor.
My buddy Brent has been farming corn with his family for 9 years. This is a non-GMO corn seed that, once harvested, will be used for dairy feed. This seed is pink because it's been treated with an insecticide to prevent worms from eating it. Brent plants his corn seed 2 inches deep, 6 inches apart, in 6 inch rows.

Another great video
Super nice video
On other thing you need to consider is that being mostly a rice farmer you may not have a deep ripper or chisel plow, but, whereas you need a plowpan in your rice to impede water infiltration with growing corn you need to ensure the deepest root growth you can get so you need to rip or chisel your ground as deep as you can when the soil is dry..also get your Phosphorous and Potash fertilizer plowed in early. Bed your corn ground if you can and you can knife in your early nitrogen prior to planting with either anhydrous or 28% uran. You can also apply the remainder of your nitrogen by
Kniffing in your 28% uran liquid mid season
That planter will also plant cotton, and peanuts, just change the plates also those hopper extensions are necessary if you plant peanuts, because it takes 12 50lb bags to plant 6 1/2 acres at 6 to 7 peanuts to the foot......The fertilizer tank will be used to apply inoculate over the seed in the trench by changing the hose to the seed firmer------- Talcum power is also added to the hopper with each seed refill
Very good video
As a tip use a good seed treatment for a huge root mass development
Coud be Envigor 8, and revelation etc
The fertilizer should go 2.5 inches below the grain and 2.5 inches at the side the planter should be calibrated there, all seeds should be at the same size you could have small size seed saved for the end thus smaller seeds germinate faster and t you will have a more uniform stand
Your tractor should be at 2,000 rpm, more rpm your emergence % will drop, less rpm same your emergence will % will drop, when planting use ammonium sulfate 11_52 P, K and micro nutritients,
Best regards
Matt thank you for showing what the other guys don’t. Of all the farming channels I watch that grow corn you are the first to show the planter like you did. Great video as always.
Great job I will give you Goid tips , important calibrate the fertilizer to go 2.5 inches below the grain and 2.5 inches
Your planting spped is good I will go the no more than 5 mph, the goal is to get the emergence all in a 24 hours window, a uniform emergence iquals same plant yield and and end max yield
Rpm are very important choose 2,000 rpm, less or more your % of plant emergence will drop,
Low the presion from the hydraulic piston roller to the lowest
Use a seed treatment helps greatly building root mass
Envigor 8 genesis Ag
Don't use urea in planting better use ammonium sulfate and 11_52 way better
Remember to change the gaskets from grain between 150 _200 acres
you can't start a farm with a few corn kernels if they are from a hybrid. (The kernels that a hybrid plant produce aren't fertile)
That was great!! Go California Farmers!!! Heck, go farmers!! The unsung heroes of America. We crowd stores and by all this stuff many of us take for granted and don’t know the amount of work and generations of dedication it took to get it on the shelves. Thanks Matt!
Very cool video! Corn is planted the same way over here in central Louisiana on bedded rows using a 3pt. Mounted planter with liquid fertilizer tanks mounted on the tractors. The only difference is most the corn over here is planted on a wider row spacing usually 38" spacing, only a couple farmers here plant on 30".
Thanks Brent for the great tour of your planting operation! And thanks as always Matt for the great videos and window into ag in your area of California!
You two guys are so funny..
Make a great couple..
We should pay the corn to plant it's self bloom
That's pretty slick, the rear tires are all spaced for the rows, and all the mechanical / electronics that go into making it efficient. Thanks for the tour., Go plant some corn.
Matt! Astonished smiling... Learning stuff..
Great video! Thanks for the corn planting your.
You had me so excited I thought that you had this guy planting your corn. Great video anyways and the John Deere IVT is the same as a Case CVT transmission if you are familiar with those.
Farmers rock.
He is doing a Nice job 👌🏼
Good luck on the corn 🌽 hope your yield will be a lot.
Wow! The first implement that I've recognized. Seed box! A bit more complex than the one I used to overseed my pastures 20 years ago.
I like your sweatshirt buddy! Keep up the good work!
Love your videos
Thank you, Owen!

Nice something I recognize CORN👍👍
Put in irrigation ditches after planting? Thanks for making the video... Kiwis next?
35k subs wit a sic intro dope fresh ass heckk....rice!
Ikr, I love this intro
That was fascinating - thanks Matthew!
Where did you get that Budweiser seed? Cenex says they don't sell them.
That was a fun surprise, thanks Matt. Those pink seeds are pretty sweet. Yellow corn comes from pink seeds, who woulda known?
You guys could pass for brothers. Just saying !! :--))
Awesome video
Mathew! If it ain’t green it ain’t mean buddy! We just traded our planters like that last year and got two new 16 row JD 1725 CCS. Went from 4 planters to two.
I plant corn here in Kansas in April!! Won’t be long...
Why are they planting on raised ridges instead of just onto flat ground?
Stewart Bird It’s for irrigation. In California, we normally don’t get enough water to just let it grow after planting. We have those ridges for the water to flow through and irrigate the corn.
@@matthewmeents1287 Thanks for the information
Great video as usual ...love it !! :)
Great vid! I do miss planting on our farm we had in wa. state
Farmers are such great people. Next to welders😁
Awesome 😎
I'm way behind in the corn planting technology. I would have used a stick and a hand held rake. I'm interested to see how corn is watered.
Generally it isn't unless it's sweet corn
David S here we water nearly everyday with a pivot or hard hose in south ga
@@swiftsavvy6786 Interesting, guess that just shows how different farming can be across the US. Up here in Illinois/Iowa we irrigate some crops but rarely ever field corn unless it's contract seed corn. You'd be pumping away your profit
I wish the trees grew just as fast on my tree farm. But I do love my Kubota. All tractors are great though! Farmers dont quit because of a virus, farmers are strong.
Just a heads up, in the description above you have:
"Brent plants his corn seed 2 inches deep, 6 inches apart, in 6 inch rows. "
I believe that is 30 inch rows, which would match the seed rate of ~34,000/acre.
In this area of the country they use No Till Corn.
Man....if ole Bloomy says it's that easy we should all get in the corn game! 😁😂😉
Matt, I thought & hoped maybe you guys were planting some corn this year!
Thanks matthew for sharing. Around here a 8 row is a small planter😁😁 im assuming that the rollers for the ridges are for future irrigation? Thanks again for sharing
Is this tractor on lease?
How many acres do you farm?
Very good planter and very nice information. Thank you.this is a modern planter . We plants seeds with traditional planter and very slow speed. like this planter we never seen yet in India in our area
Yes I am passionate. John Deere's is the best😆
I love when John Deere guys say they buy John Deere's because of resale value, but they pay more when there new so there not really getting much more.
They get the use of a damn fine tractor between purchase and trade!
@@philrizzo To be realistic all major brands are pretty much the same in terms of performance/comfort. What makes a difference is dealer support, anybody that says different is most likely a fanboy of some brand. Every brand has some bad models and even when talking about "good" models you can still get bad tractor.
When will Matt show us how too forecast a stocks? It's potential risk over the short term and long term and potential growth and equivocate it in a market rating?
What hybrid you planting? What “day” corn is it? Here in the Midwest we plant a 110 up to a 114 day corn.
Hey Matt awesome vid was that ground rice ground before? We tried few season ago on a lil check we had and failed 😂
They rotate that ground with tomatoes, sun flowers and corn, I believe. What do you think went wrong with your cron crop?
-Matthew
what do you guys use for a planter great video
Matthew seeds rice by air.
Great video. Can you tell me how long the corn takes to germinate, IE pock its leaves out of the ground? Two weeks, one week. thanks
All depends on weather ground temp, ive saw corn come up in 5 days and saw some take 2 weeks , cool weather really slows it down
One more thing. The seed cost about about $300 per unit of 80,000 seeds. Much of that cost is due to insecticide on the seed and genetically bred into the seed. Also the genetics cause the seed to be tolerant to several herbicides. When I graduated from college 50 years ago, I bought seed for $45 for 120,000 seeds. We planted 28 to 34,000 seeds per acre now we plant 33,000 seeds. My top yield then was 180 bu/ac now it is 285 with less fertilizer and irrigation water. The profit margin was greater then even with $1.50 corn compared with $3.50 today.
A lot of operations are starting to go back to traditional varieties of corn. It takes more work and often more inputs but there is a growing market for non GMOs across the board in corn and beans both. Pretty interesting stuff.
@Robert Reznik Thank you! For an old guy like myself that has never been around actual farming (Central Florida Native, only know orange trees), that was fascinating to read comparing what was then to now. Extremely interesting and greatly appreciated.
Where do you get your music? Id love to use this chill laid back music in my videos! Thanks!
Is the corn kernel the only part used to feed cattle or humans or is there uses for the other parts of the plant?
For dairy operations they chop the entire plant and make what's called silage. Also produced are fodder/stover, it would take too long to explain it all but Google will tell you what you want to know if you're really curious 👍
Over on the Blancolirio channel, someone suggested that corn cobs were an alternative to toilet paper. ;-)
Resale value, what the heck is he talking about, you get a John Deere cause they last forever, you don't buy one thinking about re-selling it.
Who believes in big foot? I need this for a report so answer honestly please.
What’s the title of your report?

@@Ricefarmingtv "Assessing Reliability"
Hi brother I do not believe in big foot
no to bigfoot
Of course there is a Big Foot, one can tell because of the rumors, all rumors have a basis..
#gocorn
Yes!
Don t tuch the seeds, you could catch the coronavirus
Lol which is better case or John Deere
all of them, only the dealership closest counts...
Hands down a case of beer is the best.
oh yeah.... it is as EZ as "dig a hole" - "drop in a seed" ---- "add water" and you grow corn.
Another dark secret farming conspiracy solved on RICE ( i mean) CORN FARMING TV.... ( X- Files audio inserted here)
G'day great video
Matt, will you be flooding the newly planted corn like you would rice as I'm wondering if the existing water table would support it without irrigation?
jim
For tractors I'm a massey Ferguson guy but don't believe everything you hear about planting any kinda crops you should know
Thats not very social distancing of you, sir!
Very corny 😂 Doesn't anyone out there use New Holland tractors? I think the blue looks much nicer than green or red!
Nef motors are way better than jd 6,3liters, those are just a mess but dont say that to jdfanboys, they dont belive in that and a i see a lot of americans dont buy those but trust me are a lot more reliable. I have 4 nh,they never have major issues (like gearboxs or motors) of course they broke too but no one near me have a john deere lasted over 5000 hours without changing big pieces
