Well! I"be dammed if the last 3 minutes wasnt the most american-farming sight I ever saw! Great job my fellow potato farmer :))) Keep up the good work! We will meet at the next video. :)
Well I’m glad you enjoyed the video especially the drone footage. I never know if people end up watching it. I think it’s pretty cool. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Amazing video of an even more amazing farming operation. This video should be shown on CBS 60 minutes.
What variety of potatoes do you grow
@@glennkramer2922 that would be cool I’m glad you enjoyed it
@@George-rw8ej we grow russet rangers.
❤Thank you for feeding my family!
No problem. Thanks for watching
I was raised on an 80-acre Spud farm near Buhl Idaho. 1947 Hand-cut seed eye per piece. Farmall F-30 tractor. Hand-picked and hand-bucked. School closed for harvest. Pickers got a nickel per sack. Lots of work but it was a great way to grow up.
Very cool! The Shelley school district here still closes for harvest. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing your story.
I live in New Zealand and moved out of town to a two acre block surrounded by paddocks which have grown wheat, ryegrass and potatoes. It’s amazing how farming is done, the machinery and dedication of the farmers and contractors. I am always enthralled to see something new from season to season. They all deserve more credit because it’s a hard life and they battle the market and the weather. Thanks to all farmers for making our food.
Farming is definitely hard there have been a lot of farmers around us who have quit farming because they couldn’t make any money. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
This is what should be shown in schools so people actually know how they eat and the time and money it takes to simply get a potato. Keep it up.
I’ve tried talking to the local schools to see if they would show any of it but so far no luck. thanks for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
A trip thru this video would give kids a broader, and hopefully appreciative, perspective of their fries from McDonalds or Burger King etc. Great video, especially the GPS controls for uniform rows!!!
I remember planting potatoes with my grandfather. We would sty up the night before cutting the eyes off that we planted. Man miss those memories for sure. We would have a 1/2 acre of potatoes the rest all vegetation you could think of that would grow in the south Texas area. We planted 1 1/2 acre of groceries and dang those veggies was the better than what you buy in the stores now. Homegrown is the best without all them chemicals the government wants yall to put on them. Yeah while it took some to keep the bugs, insects, etc away but dang love me some homemade veggies. Keep up the great work!!!
Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
That's what I remember as a young boy, helping my dad plant potatoes in Northeast Arkansas. We had what was called a middle buster and I would drive the A Farmall and dad would walk behind the tractor with his hands on the plow. I was 8 or 9 and the tractor was in first gear so he could keep up. Then we dropped the potatoes by hand then we would cover them by hand with a hand rake. It was hard work to plant a 1/2 of potatoes. By the way, this is my first time watching your videos, Doug.
Thanks for sharing your memory.

Showing how everything worked was brilliant. Great job. Subscribed!
Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Its really nice to see how other Contries plant Potatoes and what kind of machines are used. We are already done with planting our 830 hectare (around 2000 acres). Greetings from Germany
Yeah, it is interesting how different the equipment is from place to place. Even around here there are many different types of planters and set ups that everybody uses
That last few minutes of the drone shots was awesome. Makes America 🇺🇸 proud what you do . Thank you for sharing a great video. 👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I always wondered if anybody would want to watch the drone footage. I’m glad people like it.
I always wanted to drive a loader since I was a kid. Was in awe of the loader from way back....
They are pretty fun to drive
WOW!!! That is so cool! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Well this is just fascinating. Farming, especially modern farming, is super cool.
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching
I grew up in Shelley, knew your family and good friends with the Dial and Cannon families. RIP Curt Dial.
Me and my brothers come and hunt pheasants in and around Shelley every year, harder to find em but still a good time. It was a great place to grow up in the 70’s and 80’s. Moving pipe, spud days and learning to drive everything imaginable starting around 7-8 years old. Thanks for sharing your operation.
Well, I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment and sharing your story.
Thanks for the video, We are from Idaho Falls.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
WOW!!!!!!!!❤❤...That's Food security right there
Yeah that’s true. Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Great video. I am a retired grain and livestock farmer from MT. Great to see how the potatoes are grown. In my graduate wortk at Oregonstate I Worked for the potato breeding project and Foundation seed. Very informative farming video.
That’s cool that you worked on breeding potato seed. I always wondered how that worked. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
I loved the detail you show on how the planter works. The only thing I was left wondering about was how it produced so much vacuum. All my life I've had this insatiable desire to see how things work.
There are two big fans that spin with the PTO that produced the suction. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Amazing. Clearly technlogy (and smart farmers) are feeding us all! Thank you!!!
So nice of you. Thanks for watching
Grainfarming is a holiday compared to potatofarming🤠
Potatoes are definitely difficult. Glad you enjoyed the video
Fantastic.
Is this on Rocky Moutain House ?
Great that you took the time, out of your very busy life to show us.
Good luck with your operation.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m not sure what Rocky Mountain house is? Thanks for watching.
It’s tater time! Now y’all need rain to help the pivots. I really enjoy all your videos last years harvest and your storage videos were awesome. That’s the most taters this old Georgia boy has ever seen. Thanks for sharing and see you next time.
Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it. As far as watering the potatoes we will have summers where we get one rainstorm so we do not depend on the rain. We have to water them or they’ll die.
This was awesome to see! Loved the last three minutes of drone footage…totally inspiring!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and commenting
Thanks Ted
Can you please tell me what drone is that? It looks amazing@@RockyMountainFarmer
Great video! I am behind the curve on watching your videos, but I will catch up. Thanks.
I’m glad you enjoy the channel. Thanks for watching.
ive always wanted to see how potatoes was done dont see alot of it on youtube and i think its pretty cool
Yeah, there’s only a handful of channels on UA-cam that actually Farm potatoes. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for planting my potatoes for a store near me.
Our pleasure!
Excellent videography. You showed use all the interesting stuff. I learned a lot. Keep doing what you are doing.
I’m glad you enjoyed it thanks for watching.
Great video and explanation...thank you. A huge operation, running like clockwork.
Glad you liked it!
I grew up on a small farm in northwest Ontario, Canada in 1950's. Dad had a one-row planter originally built to be pulled by 2 horses, used picks instead of vacuums but otherwise identical. Converted it to tractor pull when i was maybe 6 yrs old. Had a onerow digger as well, all worked excellent.
Yeah things have grown a bit since then. Spudnik makes a 12 row planter
That was really interesting. I figured I had to use some type of machinery to plant Potatoes in 1200 and.
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
What a system for putting the potatoes in the ground! Those suction cups are crazy.
Yeah, they work pretty well too
Awesome video! I really liked the side by side of all 3, that is some great looking video!
Thanks. It took some time to setup. Glad you enjoyed it.
great explanations about the whole process. i learned stuff. learning is good. thx
Thanks for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it
We used to sit one each side of a hopper, and drop a seed potato down the tube when the bell sounded. We had to drive a LOT slower as well. We only farmed 30 acres though.
That does sound slow. Things have definitely changed.
Thanks great video great to see how broad acre planting happens 😀
Glad you enjoyed it
Totally Awesome 👏 Thanks
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
First time planting red potatoes. I learned how to plant them properly today. Going to buy a multimillion dollar machine for my backyard planting next year...., 🤣
Ha ha I think that would be a little overkill
Just came across your channel, never knew exactly how potatoes were planted. Great explanations, great camera angles. Subscribed and liked....cuz like spuds.👍👍🍻. Greetings from NE rural Ohio.
Awesome I’m glad you liked the video and thanks for the sub and the comment.
There’s many ways to do it America and a few other countries do it like that over in the U.K. we ridge then separate the land and plant after personal think it’s a better way but everyone has there own opinion and does things differently and that’s okay also could depend on the land how you do it many ways to plant potatoes
Very. Cool. Learned a lot!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
hundreds of channels about corn and soybeans this is the only one I've come across about taters
You know, that’s one of the reasons I started the channel is because I couldn’t find anything about potatoes, and I wanted to teach people where they came from. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Very good video as always !
Thanks. I’m glad you liked it

ITS POTATO SEASON!!!!! Now the long 4 1/2 month wait to harvest!
Yes, it’s usually a struggle to keep all of the pivots running to water the potatoes.
Thank you for the video. May GOD bless.

Amazes me to see how GPS steering has opened so many options for farming! Just started to see it back in2007-8.
It has made farming more efficient for sure. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Massey anti-squak fluid added to your loader might stop the brake noise and smooth the brakes. It worked for me. Excellent Video!
Thanks for the tip! Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
This was very interesting. What we would”d like to see, if you haven’t shown it already is how you prepped the seed. I watched the harvest last fall, now you are planting. I have missed a step.
I showed how we do that a few videos ago go take a look here ua-cam.com/video/eKGtjEkA_QY/v-deo.htmlsi=yKHpt_T_jI3IUEWI
I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Amazing work with them machines is you should change thr loader to a tele handler you'd have more reach over thr bins brilliant work great videos 👍
We were looking for a tele handler this year but we’re not able to find one that was affordable. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.
GPS sure helps planting around pivots, I typically use last years lines and can start at the pivot, makes it easy haha. Just finished planting yesterday :) hope things are going well!
Yes gps makes a huge difference. Glad you got your crops planted. Hopefully it’s a good year
Thanks and same to you!
Back in the 80’s a couple pivots were planted south of Holcomb in SW Kansas as a test. I didn’t hear how it panned out. I know planting per acre costs were much much higher compared to corn and soybeans but the potential for return was said to be really good.
Yeah, the return on potatoes is much more than any other crop that we have seen but they are also harder to manage
Great explanation of how everything works and enjoyed the close ups of the equipment!! Lots of maintenance items to keep up with. You probably mentioned what variety of potato you plant and I missed it. They look like Russet potatoes. What percent of your harvest go to seed potatoes? Love the aerial view at the end.
I’m glad you liked the video. The variety of potato is a russet ranger. We don’t grow any of our own seed. All of these will go into making potato flakes that be turned into things like Pringles and mashed potatoes.
I always wondered how potatoes were planted now days. Several years ago I found this horse drawn potato planter at my in-laws place in South Dakota. I brought it home and restored it. It uses a similar principle in that it skewers the potatoes from the hopper and drops them in the ground and then has disks to cover them up.
That’s cool I bet it looks good being restored. Glad you like the video.
I have hogged potatoes and onoins. Twenty years later and I still don't cry cutting onions.
Cool thanks for watching
VERY NICE VIDEO I THINK YOU ARE DOING GREAT WORK, THATS A LOT OF POTATOES, THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU.
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it.
OMG that was a really Good Vlog you explained it really well and I loved it have SUB to you in the hopes you have more in depth Vlogs re your Farm Thanks You Keep up the Great Vlogs
Thanks for the sub! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks
No problem thanks for watching
Very nice drone footage. Your soil was very soft i guess it is required to plant potatoes?
Thanks. Yes it has to be soft for potatoes
What variety of potato are you planting. Great video.
These are Russet Rangers. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey drone footage really fantastic and amazing it amused me and such drone footage within mountain make scene very beautiful and this landscaping view is breathing you should make drone footage at the start of the video which makes video more interesting and why you don't use other type of planters like as spudnik or Grimme which fertilizer you apply down and how much per acre and how much you invest on potatoes this year thanks for making video
I’m glad you enjoyed the video I do like taking drone footage because of the mountains. We don’t use any other planters because they don’t go as fast. And we do put fertilizer down. I’m not sure how much per acre but we put 100 gallons per fill of the planter
That is a lot of seed potatoes!
30000 sacks
Hello from Kerrville Tx
Welcome! Thanks for watching.
yes!
Glad you enjoyed it
You are blessed with great soil. Have you built up the ground with cover crops?
We have never actually done a cover crop, but we do haul, from my uncles dairy, about 4000 loads of cow manure every year so that really builds up the soil
@@RockyMountainFarmer
Your uncle must have a lot of cattle and horses.
@@carlkucharski9758 no horses just dairy cows and yes he has about 4000 cows
Great video! You guys certainly can cover some ground in a day? An a great back drop of the rocky mts!
Thanks I’m glad you enjoyed it. I love the mountains in the background
@@RockyMountainFarmer those fields are huge! I farm in nys. An you really have to go some to find a 50 acre field..and you grow all russets than for fresh 🍟?
@@paullhommedieu2795 yeah, there’s some big fields out here and yes, we grow all russets they get turned into potato flakes we used to grow for the company that made McDonald’s fries
@@RockyMountainFarmer was that company lamb an westen? I got a tour of one of their plants in Oregon many years ago..also got a tour of a basic American foods plant in the kalmath basin..they made flakes there 4 Pringles potato chips..the process was amazing..
@@paullhommedieu2795 yes we grew for Lamb Weston for about 30 years so if you have eaten at McDonald’s in the last 30 years, there’s a chance you ate one of our potatoes
a friend's house had a potato farm 🚜 next door, we played in it a bit once and i remember seeing lots of signs right there on a subsequent visit. 😅
That’s interesting
Good morning! Great Video y'all, thank you! Was curious, are y'all growing for the fresh or processor market? I worked for McCain Foods for many, many years and always love watching the spuds go in the ground! Sincerely appreciate what y'all do, farmers are the backbone of our country! Thank you!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. All of ours go to process.
HT for the camera work. Productivity is off the chart.
Well, I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
@@RockyMountainFarmer Cheers ;)
This is perystaltic pump, they are very accurate and can work with various speed.
They work great and almost no maintenance or nozzles to clean
What are most farmers in your area planting? Do you rotate crops? What are they rotated with? Do you do any grain?
We rotate potatoes grain and some hay. There are a lot of crops grown around here. I’ve seen corn, canola, mustard, sugar beets, grass, and quinoa. There is probably something I’m missing.
Interesting that the planter does not come with the row leveling bar you custom add to the planters.
Which french fries do you like the best???
I think that was an option, but it was way cheaper to just make it ourselves. I really like Wendy’s fries.
Of you add friction modifier to the case axles it takes care of the brake noise. Coming from a mechanic who worked on a lot of high hour case loaders
Good to know
Is that because CASE is a WET brake system. I cut my teeth on my dad's lap on the old 580- CK backhoe. Doing the front bucket backfill. I have run every model of the 580 series backhoe. When I retired I bought myself a Dynahoe-190. I ran one in 1979 it was a beast of 19000 pounds. My baby is a 1978 with 8000 hours on the old 353 Detroit Diesel. I keep clean oil and filter in her. And have an Engine block heater. It helps at start up on her.
OK I have questions…I was up in Ashton last weekend, where I know they grow lots of seed potatoes. (Actually, I was in Last Chance and drove through Ashton to fish the Warm River.) Anyway, the fields around Ashton were just beautifully leveled. Didn’t look like anything was planted in them at all. My question is this: Do you hill your fields before you plant them, or does the planter do that for you? And, do you hill your potatoes after you grow them? Finally, what is the difference between Lockwood and Double L equipment? Are they both good? Great video. I’m excited I found this channel!
Up in Ashton, they might not have planted yet. I know they have a shorter growing season in order to get small seed potatoes but also some guys grow that in beds which look a little bit different. As far as for us, we do not Hill before. we just work the ground so it’s soft and let the planters make the hills, I come through with the dammer diker after and make the hills better. Lockwood and double L are different companies. I like the double L beds but we’ve never used any of their other equipment and I like the Lockwood planters but I don’t like any of their other equipment, all of our harvest equipment is Spudnik. I’m glad you found the channel and I hope you’re enjoying it.
Could the truck carrying the seed not have a boom like a combine to load the seeders?
It could, but it would be very expensive. We’re just trying to use what we have. We have been looking for a new way to load. There’s quite a few options.
How does the seed fall off the suction? Would love to see a slow-mo closeup of that process. Nice video. Man that is a lot of potato, just the seed !!
There is a little pipe that blows them off. We do have a lot of potatoes. Glad you enjoyed it
One way to speed up your loading is to use a small conveyor lot less down time.
Yeah we have been looking into that
Here in Idaho they use a big payloader and a bucket the width of the planter
This video could be mistaken for a southern Alberta potato farm, southern Alberta has the largest potato production in Canada. I used to contact haul vegetables to storage and processing plants, the biggest plants here being McCain's, Frito lay, lamb Weston and Cavendish Farms.
That’s just north of here a few hours. Thanks for watching.
Wow, makes my home garden of planting 70 seed potatoes a pretty small operation, haha. I'll have my son (robotics engineer) design a robotics planter for me when I'm too old, haha. Thanks for the footage! Is it mostly or all russets?
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yes we grow only russet rangers.
Was loading in montana one time near Belgrade seems they had a bear decided to sleep in the bunker overnight. Workers were unpleasantly surprised when they were preparing to loads truck that morning
That would be pretty crazy
What is the soil makeup, it looks like it’s all been rototilled very loose soil. Do you plant on a rotation or is it continuous from Iowa just corn and beans mostly here
All we did was chisel plow with a lemken karat 10. We have pretty good soil thanks to decades of hauling cow manure. It is in a rotation with wheat and some hay.
Can you make the tracks that wide on the planting tractor in stock form? Thanks in advance.
They did have to add a spacer, but it’s just a Bolt on part to make it this wide. It came like this from John Deere, Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I am new to your channel just today. I would like to know what a pivot is. Thank you, have a blessed day.
It is a semi automatic irrigation system. I’m glad you found the channel. Hope you enjoy it.
You should buy a slinger for those trucks, makes loading the planter faster and way easier. Not to mention that loader operator banging the shit out of the unit with his bucket
We have been looking for a different option for sure.
As someone that’s new to following and already can’t get enough. I’m curious as to what part of Idaho you farm?
Well I’m glad you’re enjoying it. We farm in Shelley.
Does all that loading and then planting knock off the new shoots to grow ?
Ideally there aren’t any shoots when we plant. The shoots grow after they are planted. If they did have shoots and break off, they would regrow.
whats the rough money in vs money out on a farm like yours?
Your small Spudnik looked a lot like the one we used only newer, then I saw the one in the weeds outside the cellar and it looks closer to the one we used but is still newer. How old is that one? The one we had looked almost exactly like the one in the museum in Blackfoot
The one outside is the one we used to use until this year it still works. It’s a 60 something I think it’s a 61. It was one of the first ones. Spudnik made and yes they have that exact same one and some museums. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
does the wheelloader have a prio list to fill fx the new planter is most effective so that have to run all the time or will he just fill planters as they come in?
The loader is pretty much running and loading nonstop.
My job as a kid working for a potato farm was to walk the rows burying any exposed seed ! I must of walked at least 10,000 miles doing that ?! Give or take a few thousand !
That’s what our cultivator does now. Thanks for watching
