Well I’m glad you enjoyed the video especially the drone footage. I never know if people end up watching it. I think it’s pretty cool. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Planting 1,200 acres of potatoes in just 7 days is an impressive feat! efficiency and coordination that modern farming techniques and machinery bring to such a massive task.
A trip thru this video would give kids a broader, and hopefully appreciative, perspective of their fries from McDonalds or Burger King etc. Great video, especially the GPS controls for uniform rows!!!
I completely agree with you! It's incredible to see the effort and resources involved in planting and harvesting potatoes. Have you ever wondered about the challenges these farmers face during the planting season? What other crops do you think require just as much dedication and hard work?
I live in New Zealand and moved out of town to a two acre block surrounded by paddocks which have grown wheat, ryegrass and potatoes. It’s amazing how farming is done, the machinery and dedication of the farmers and contractors. I am always enthralled to see something new from season to season. They all deserve more credit because it’s a hard life and they battle the market and the weather. Thanks to all farmers for making our food.
Farming is definitely hard there have been a lot of farmers around us who have quit farming because they couldn’t make any money. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the upload. Potato technology has come a long way in my lifetime. I remember sitting on the bench on the back of a manual planter as a boy of 13 with a cpl of mates trying to make sure we never missed placing a seed in the spinning compartments. Happy days.
Well, I’m a tell you what, I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so cool, and I’ve been around the block I think. Thank you very much for taking the time to show this to a south Louisiana boy. God bless you all I appreciate farmers, I appreciate food hallelujah. As a matter fact, the closer I get to 70 the more I like food!
Seeing a potato farm takes me back to my time as a 13 year old here in the UK potato picking. We would be picked up by the farm lorry at 5am, then work filling 1 tonne wooden crates with potatoes that you would pick by hand. As a 13 year old, I earned more than £100 a week (about $170 at the exchange rates of the time) doing that backbreaking work from 6am to 5pm for a few weeks every year.
That sounds like a lot of work. I’m glad we don’t do it that way anymore. It would be hard to find people to work that anymore. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I was raised on an 80-acre Spud farm near Buhl Idaho. 1947 Hand-cut seed eye per piece. Farmall F-30 tractor. Hand-picked and hand-bucked. School closed for harvest. Pickers got a nickel per sack. Lots of work but it was a great way to grow up.
Its really nice to see how other Contries plant Potatoes and what kind of machines are used. We are already done with planting our 830 hectare (around 2000 acres). Greetings from Germany
Yeah, it is interesting how different the equipment is from place to place. Even around here there are many different types of planters and set ups that everybody uses
Clarkson's farm has got me incredibly interested in farming lately. The machinery, the technology and how it's all done is incredible. Already held farmers in high regard for the amount of hard work they do, and that's only increasing with every video I watch, even the logistics that go on to make all this come together is amazing. Thanks for taking the time to share your incredible work and help educate people on the work that goes into putting food on their plates.
An awesome operation you have there. Last year my wife threw some old potatoes in the compost pile. A few weeks later we noticed the leaves so we took them out, planted them and later that season I dug up at least a dozen lol. So they’re not hard to grow.
They’re not hard to grow, but you have to keep a close eye on them because there’s a lot of diseases that can affect them. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
I remember planting potatoes with my grandfather. We would sty up the night before cutting the eyes off that we planted. Man miss those memories for sure. We would have a 1/2 acre of potatoes the rest all vegetation you could think of that would grow in the south Texas area. We planted 1 1/2 acre of groceries and dang those veggies was the better than what you buy in the stores now. Homegrown is the best without all them chemicals the government wants yall to put on them. Yeah while it took some to keep the bugs, insects, etc away but dang love me some homemade veggies. Keep up the great work!!!
That's what I remember as a young boy, helping my dad plant potatoes in Northeast Arkansas. We had what was called a middle buster and I would drive the A Farmall and dad would walk behind the tractor with his hands on the plow. I was 8 or 9 and the tractor was in first gear so he could keep up. Then we dropped the potatoes by hand then we would cover them by hand with a hand rake. It was hard work to plant a 1/2 of potatoes. By the way, this is my first time watching your videos, Doug.
I loved the detail you show on how the planter works. The only thing I was left wondering about was how it produced so much vacuum. All my life I've had this insatiable desire to see how things work.
I always wondered how potatoes were planted now days. Several years ago I found this horse drawn potato planter at my in-laws place in South Dakota. I brought it home and restored it. It uses a similar principle in that it skewers the potatoes from the hopper and drops them in the ground and then has disks to cover them up.
I grew up in Shelley, knew your family and good friends with the Dial and Cannon families. RIP Curt Dial. Me and my brothers come and hunt pheasants in and around Shelley every year, harder to find em but still a good time. It was a great place to grow up in the 70’s and 80’s. Moving pipe, spud days and learning to drive everything imaginable starting around 7-8 years old. Thanks for sharing your operation.
Great video. I am a retired grain and livestock farmer from MT. Great to see how the potatoes are grown. In my graduate wortk at Oregonstate I Worked for the potato breeding project and Foundation seed. Very informative farming video.
When iwas young we cut seed potatoes by hand planted normally about 125 acres a year. We had a two row planter with a seat on the back end. Times have changed for planting its all interesting. To see how times have changed. Everything was done with barrels as well with fertilizer. Oh this was in northern Maine
Back in the 80’s a couple pivots were planted south of Holcomb in SW Kansas as a test. I didn’t hear how it panned out. I know planting per acre costs were much much higher compared to corn and soybeans but the potential for return was said to be really good.
I grew up on a small farm in northwest Ontario, Canada in 1950's. Dad had a one-row planter originally built to be pulled by 2 horses, used picks instead of vacuums but otherwise identical. Converted it to tractor pull when i was maybe 6 yrs old. Had a onerow digger as well, all worked excellent.
It’s tater time! Now y’all need rain to help the pivots. I really enjoy all your videos last years harvest and your storage videos were awesome. That’s the most taters this old Georgia boy has ever seen. Thanks for sharing and see you next time.
Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it. As far as watering the potatoes we will have summers where we get one rainstorm so we do not depend on the rain. We have to water them or they’ll die.
Love the drone footage. From a family of farmers myself I would like to thank you for all the hard work you do. My son lives in Colorado Springs, not sure of your location, but I would like to visit the farm one day if possible. Keep it up our American Heritage, we are loosing too much to China (our land).
Thank you for showing how spuds are planted. I grew up on a small farm, and we had a lot more hand labor and smaller equipment. Thank you, take care Nice equipment. 👍
Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it. There are some big potato farms out here that are bigger than us course the state just curtailed all the water which is going to put a lot of them out of business.

Did anyone else hear this April about a water war imminent in Idaho ? Even with all of the rain and snow the last two years ( thanks to that submerged volcano popping two years ago in Hunga Tonga) the inept 'authorities' are claiming the farmers can't irrigate hundreds of thousands of acres of crops this year.
Yeah it’s going to be bad there’s over 100,000 acres that will not be able to get watered. It might even be close to 500,000 acres. The bad thing is everybody’s crops were already planted and then they told them they couldn’t water them. Luckily, we are not affected because most of our farm is watered with surface water.
Lotta of farms in Idaho are " dry farmed" the planting of beets and potatoes is done in sync with seasonal rains and spring run off from winter snow. Less output production wise than a irrigated farm, yet more cost effective considering the depth and cost for drilling wells; not mention electricity and diesel needed to keep well pumps operating around the clock for the expensive mobile irrigating sprinklers.
Hey drone footage really fantastic and amazing it amused me and such drone footage within mountain make scene very beautiful and this landscaping view is breathing you should make drone footage at the start of the video which makes video more interesting and why you don't use other type of planters like as spudnik or Grimme which fertilizer you apply down and how much per acre and how much you invest on potatoes this year thanks for making video
I’m glad you enjoyed the video I do like taking drone footage because of the mountains. We don’t use any other planters because they don’t go as fast. And we do put fertilizer down. I’m not sure how much per acre but we put 100 gallons per fill of the planter
Great explanation of how everything works and enjoyed the close ups of the equipment!! Lots of maintenance items to keep up with. You probably mentioned what variety of potato you plant and I missed it. They look like Russet potatoes. What percent of your harvest go to seed potatoes? Love the aerial view at the end.
I’m glad you liked the video. The variety of potato is a russet ranger. We don’t grow any of our own seed. All of these will go into making potato flakes that be turned into things like Pringles and mashed potatoes.
This video could be mistaken for a southern Alberta potato farm, southern Alberta has the largest potato production in Canada. I used to contact haul vegetables to storage and processing plants, the biggest plants here being McCain's, Frito lay, lamb Weston and Cavendish Farms.

Supposedly it’s already ending
@@dmcnamara9859No one in Idaho raises potatoes and beets dry land. They are all irrigated.
@@delbutler885Known dry farmers
when I lived in Idaho, less output than irrigated land, but it still works out if you know what you're doing.
We proud to be AMERICA , god bless the UNITED STATE OF AMERICA .the best VIDEOS EVER , THANKS Rocky Mountain Farmer ,
I’m really glad you enjoyed it
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Had no idea,,,very good,,,ever time eat a potato will remember
Glad you enjoyed it. It’s definitely quite a process to get a potato to grow.

@@RockyMountainFarmer yes sir
good job guys, keep going!!!!!
Thanks I’m glad you enjoyed it
Great explanation of how everything works and enjoyed the close ups of the equipment!!
3 Abreast, Magnificent!!!
I’m glad you enjoyed it
Great camera work to show the closeup process!
Glad you enjoyed it

Well, I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
@@RockyMountainFarmer Cheers ;)
Amazing and overwhelming 🙂
True true
This video could be mistaken for a southern Alberta potato farm, southern Alberta has the largest potato production in Canada. I used to contact haul vegetables to storage and processing plants, the biggest plants here being McCain's, Frito lay, lamb Weston and Cavendish Farms.
That’s just north of here a few hours. Thanks for watching.
