I have always wondered how rice planted by air manages to fall into nice rows like I’ve seen in previous videos. Now I know! Thanks for showing and explaining the process!
Here In Cactus Texas there was a ammonium nitrate plant. During World War II it was a major nitrate supplier for the needed bombs. Phillips Petroleum operated it to make Ammonia into aqua ammonia. Ammonia was oxidized to make nitric acid. When combined the resulting ammonium nitrate would be rained down in a tower to make the prell. To fertilize our wheat crop in 1959 we would get a flatbed truck load at the plant and then shovel into a spreader. To fertilize a field in 1965 to grow grain-sorghum dad hired a custom applicator who used 3 or 4 International 806 tractor bars to put out the aqua ammonia much like Rice farming TV. They used semi trucks to apply 800#/ac. because aqua is about 20.5% N and this irrigated area is much larger than California rice country.
Wow Robert, fascinating history! It makes me want to look up the history of aqua ammonia and the root of modern, synthetic fertilizers. Thank you for the inspiration! Also interesting parallels to fertilizing in TX vs CA. -M.
Matthew! I'm sorry to hear about your fertilizer shortage. Hope you're able to get your crop in before crop insurance becomes an issue! Best of luck, man!
I remember the days I used to haul aqua from our tanks to the field with a tank truck and fill the tractor tank. You don't want to stand down wind when filling the tanks
All the news I need to know from CA comes from Matthew and Juan. Seed bed looks great. Hope you get fert soon. How many farmers in your area are stopped because no fertilizer?
Hi Marc, every rice farmer I know was affected. They were rationing off fertilizer on a daily basis. Each ration was just about enough to cover 90 acres. When some operations equipment could do 200+ acres a day. -Matthew
Hello Matthew. I am farming rice in Turkey. its inspring to follow your works in rice, your team is having great job with felds. I have few questions for you. I would like to hear your answers. 1. What is the nitrogen amount you put into soil in aqua ammonium form? 2.what is the npk amount you put with roller? Thank you.
Hi Canberk Kargi, hello from Australia. Matt said "triple 15", which I think means 15N-15P-15K. Hopefully, Matt will tell you about the aqua ammonium rate and correct me if I'm wrong about the "triple 15".
Triple 15 is a long relaesing fertilizer. İt takes time to affect. That means it needs to mix under the soil surface. İt works with roots. I want to learn about aqua ammonium. İf you put it on the surface and if it takes less time to relaese. How can seed use that nitrogen? Theres no nitrogen need that much at that time.
@@canberkkarg9265 In this video, Matt showed us the implement that injects the aqua ammonia and says it is injected two to three inches into the ground. It is not applied on the surface.
A few questions. Why is the NH3 converted to aqua and how does that process work? Can you not spread nitrogen stabilized urea or nitrate instead of waiting for aqua?
Hi Matt wanna see something cool regarding rice. look up salt water rice farming in the UAE and soon in Saudi Arabia. they are working with the South Koreans and china to develop rice that can grow in brackish and salt water or partially salty water. they are supposed to plant their first major test crop this year after the success of the smaller ones . If all works out the deserts of the middle east and Africa should become giant rice and wheat fields since they are also working on wheat as well. btw love your content keep up the good work.
Mtthew, what difference, if any, will the later planting and harvest make in the taste of your rice? I am looking forward to buying some of this year's crop!
Big Kenny! What’s up! No difference at all. Only thing is depending on the weather, is it gets later in the summer and closer to fall, we could see a yield drop due to cooler temperatures during the reproductive phase. -M.
Are the fertiliser dealers giving out complete orders to farms in turn, or are they giving out perhaps 1/4 order to each farm, then sharing more out as it comes in. To even out the inconvenience? We spell fertiliser with an 's' in Scotland.
I'm pretty sure Matt said it is the latter case. And in Australia, we also spell fertilizer with an s. Good thing I can spell both American and Australian.
A question i been wanting to ask since you posted the video showing the plane dropping the seed into your fields... How does any farmer verify that a rice field was planted/seeded correctly from side to side and front to back and also dropped at least the correct bushel/pounds/etc of seed into each specified field... Seems like quite a big gamble praying that some pilot in a plane properly seeded all of your rice fields, where you wont find out the results until after the rice starts growing up thru the water...And only then when its too late will you find the bare spots or poorly seeded spots and where there is not any seed growing...Seems that can really hurt the Purse Strings when harvest time rolls around... Can planes do Re-Seeding where they failed to correctly seed rice fields...
How many lbs of nitrogen per acre are you targeting for rice in your soil conditions? Just curious why you prefer aqua ammonia over UAN, urea or NH3... (edit... custom application with the Deere? You run the red!)
Great question-I would say no. The “rough rice” in the field is covered by the kernel’s hull, a hard shell. At the mill this gets removed. I’m sure the sealed the kernel from the smoke. -Matthew
I can't get household ammonia from any of the stores in my area (LA County). Is there any correlation between the non availability of household ammonia and farming aqua ammonia?
Matthew ,,, study up on the Haber Bosch process ,, some people will say it is the most important invention of mankind ,even more so than airplanes , auto ,computers.and most of the industrial revolution. Very interesting story
What percent of water is lost by being soaked into the ground before it gets to the fields? Would it be a better use of water to move it in pipes instead of ground trenches?
What you call waste I call ground water. Our local canal district concreted our ditchs and quickly found out that it caused wells to dry so they now pump water directly into the dessert just to re fill the aquafer per the state.
A couple of years ago, I was watching how rice is grown in Arkansas. There they use like a huge modern wheat drill to plant their rice. Afterwards they flood the fields. My question is in California you plant rice by airplane after the fields are flooded. What is the advantage in planting rice by airplane?
Mathew has less equipment and can make time for Rice Farming TV. A 40' drill or planter would cost $90.000 and need a 190 hp tractor and driver + seed tender to apply 120 lbs of seed / ac. + NPK fertilizer tender.
Why is there a shortage of the aqua-ammonia? Is it a yearly occurrence with so many operators (farmers) needing the stuff at the same time? Are distributors impacted by Covid-19 shutdowns upstream in the supply chain? Or is it more nefarious with implications snaking their way to the tariff wars we're engaged in against a large manufacturing nation we depend on for many of our supply chains to run smoothly?
I think it has to do with the waterway that the ship has to sail up has silted up, and the ship can only take a reduced load to avoid grounding. It is mentioned in previous episodes.
