    Yep, my Amiga 1200 its on Internet, since 1993/94, and browse bbs´s from the 80s (i my A1000/A500, i still have those machines too! and other Amiga models) . And you know, the A1200 i still using, was my main computer until 2010!. I have next to me!: Nice video!.

    Miami was written by Holger Kruse and sold by Nordic Global. I still use it - it's a dead-end but with Genesis, any complex configuration means editing text files where Miami has a UI for things like adding users and plugging services into inetd. If you want to get Samba working, take any advantage you can find!

    Wow, this takes me back. Back in '96, one of the 2 A1200s we had was online. Only had the giddy heights of 33.6kbps but back then it was enough.
    I loved AmIRC and even used to hang in the channel where the creator, Oliver Wagner would be too. Had great fun using bots too.
    Anyway, loved the vid. Makes me wish I still had an Amiga.

      Getting an old machine online remains the same question "What examply would you do" ? IRC,? It would be very limited other than just to show it off...
      Its good to do anyway, but just like running AmigaOS 4.1 in emulation,,,, apart from viewing workbench, there is noting that makes it as useful as an AMiga 500

    Nice to see someone doing these types of videos for Amiga, been thinking of doing it myself from time to time :).
    Miami/Delux, AmiTCP, Roadshow etc are all based on the same engine, the stack that you find in BSD, the reason that Roadshow is faster is that it uses a newer version of that engine (but far from the latest).
    Ooh, and nice to see people are still using our old crack of Miami Delux ;-).

    The Amiga was actually employed in a number of creative businesses. Music production was fairly common, though it's not as widespread as the Atari ST was. It was a lot more common in video production though. It also has a lot of productivity software that was quite credible.
    Ironically it was heavily used in the production of game art for PS1s.

    Nice video! I've been thinking about getting my A1200 online for a while, but I don't really want to pay the inflated prices places like Amigakit want for their network cards.
    Trouble is I'm not really sure which PCMCIA cards *will* work and I can't really find much information about compatible cards, although from what I can tell anything NE2000 compatible should work. Would a Belkin F5D5020 (this is a 16-bit PCMCIA card) work?

    Hey there Kookytech. I like your video's very much. They give me valuable information how to setup my Amiga 1200. In this video I noticed you have an external cd-rom drive and from what it appears an IDE cable coming out of the left side, somewhere through the A1200 case. I have searched your video's for any information about external cd-rom drives, but sadly there is not any one. Maybe you could do a small video about how to with this external drive?

    • @AlienRelics
      @AlienRelics 10 років тому

      I got hold of some cables with the 44 pin connector for 2.5 inch drives on one end, and 40 pin full size IDE on the other. You need something like that and an external power supply. Unfortunately, older 2.5 inch IDE drives don't work well with a 2nd drive.

    How will the internet run on a standard unexpanded A1200 3.0?

  • @TheTurnipKing
    @TheTurnipKing 11 років тому

    Not all of it. It was heavily used in the early seasons, but they were seriously pushing the limits of what the system was capable of.
    I believe Lightwave remained employed but eventually they created a PC based render farm just to increase the complexity of the scenes and reduce render times.
    Check the wikipedia article

    Apparently not all NE2000 cards work on the A1200 unfortunately. I can't find any info on that particular card, but mine is a CNet CN40BC, others that are known to work: Fiberline 4680, Kingston KNE-PC2T, kingston KNE-PC20, Accton EN2216, Socket Communications model AAA-1001, DLink DE-650, SureCom EP-527. Ebay the best bet!

    Back in 93 I had my a3000 on the internet via a local isp and a courrier hst modem on my serial port. I’ve wondered why not connect the serial port to a raspberry pi via a null modem and create a ppp connection from the Amiga to the pi, and let the pi route packets to the lan/internet. It would be dirt cheap,, I’m just not sure where to start...

    I think in the older days it doesn't really make sense, but perhaps developers cared more about money than selling something useful..
    Today, you have all browsers which are free, but even a simple thing like a stack in the old days or a web browsers were considered commercial/shareware , and they were only "demos" ... Seriously? A web browser..
    Maybe more developers wanted more make profit than they do today. All this could have been fuelled by the Amiga never had any of this stuff built in, up till OS 3.9 or above. and very few open source were available.

    @Dan Wood:
    Dan, you repeatedly say things in your comments like "How to use an Amiga 1200 from 1992 to....", while sweeping under the carpet the fact that you can't achieve the things you do with an Amiga using Amiga *components* from 1992.
    The facts remain that:
    1. Most of the time you Cannot do the things you suggest on an Amiga 1200 *IN* 1992.
    2. By the time you could do the things which you suggest on an Amiga, it was long past 1992 in a time by which there were *far* better PC solutions.
    The example you have produced here was in 2013 and is clearly quite limited and barely comparable to PCs of 20 years earlier.
    Also: There's a long stream of parallel: "Hey! You can do this on an Amiga!" shouts, with source ports of software and interfaces already long available for the PC.
    It's good that Amiga fans are finding this out. They should be encouraged to update their theories about why the PC was more successful than the Amiga because if you're prepared to be honest with yourself then obviously "marketing" does not cover it: The PC has always been a better platform than the Amiga for a number of crucial things, including networking. Better supported networking is one of the reasons the PC market was well underpinned by countless departments of people with middle-class jobs furnished with fleets of networked PCs.
    FYI: 3Com Ethernet cards have been available for the PC since 1982.
