  • Time to take a look at AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, the latest (and last) version of AmigaOS 4.1 for PPC AmigaOne machines.
    AmigaOS 4, (abbreviated as OS4 or AOS4), is a line of Amiga operating systems which runs on PowerPC microprocessors. It is mainly based on AmigaOS 3.1 source code, and partially on version 3.9 developed by Haage & Partner.

    The thing that I love about the Amiga is that once you become invested in one aspect of it, you can't help but feel drawn towards the deep rabbit hole that is the world of Amiga software. This was a great video, and the new OS looks fantastic!
    Imagine what Commodore could have achieved if they had stayed in business...

      Commodore stalled in development of the Amiga in the late 1980's. They kept flip flopping on designs and releases and developed quite a few machines that never made it to market. Amiga 1000, 500, the 2000 and 600 weren't 100% compatible. I had the 500, but when Linux showed up on the scene, basically Amiga was dead. For the longest time I thought x86 hardware was total garbage (and it was!) but a 50 Mhz machine running Linux did anything and everything I wanted my Amiga to do. I had basically the equivalent of a Sun Workstation in my senior year of college running Slackware 0.99 for something like $700, and a Sun was 5 grand at the time. I didn't have as nice of a display, but it was fully usable for doing work even if I had to compile everything.

    Dan, nice work on the video. Your previous videos about your experiences using AmigaOS 4.x helped me take the plunge back in 2010, and I've not regretted the decision once since. I've gone from Sam440 to X1000 but have a room full of classic Commodore machines as well (so also have enjoyed your videos about your A1200 and others). This one is a good overview of setting up the latest AOS on one of the "older" AmigaOnes. You mentioned having problems with this system before -- here's hoping problems keep their distance for a while!

    I do so miss my miggy..
    I bought a standard A1200, spent loads of money on it towered and all - towers were ugly back then, but I loved that machine..
    A good number of years I had to move at short notice and couldn't sell - couldn't even give away as most were on pc. Had to be dumped (rip).
    Now you can't get for love or money, unless you're willing to pay huge prices..
    Great video and its great watching the user base is so alive still. I'll never forget my joy of amiga..

    Hey Dan ! thanks for all the cool videos, you have put so much effort into them and it shows :)
    I built my dream system this week, got a A500 1.3 with Internal 512K mem, a A590 40Mb HDD with 2Mb, and a Zipstick Joystick !, Cumana external Drive, ALL in their Original Boxes in excellent condition !
    Tonight I got it all set up and couldn't believe a 30 year Old computer had graphical disk partitioning tools lol !!! wayyyyyyyy ahead of it's time
    "downloading" a file to Ramdisk over serial, playing an Amiga Computing sound track (MED I think it was) formatting 2nd partition and not a bit of lag...amazing..all from 7.14Mhz !
    Anyways thanks again for all the great Amiga videos :)

      they upgraded everything else but the look and feel of workbench1.3 intuition... Its feels like a half finished product.

    I really wish they'd Make it so Amiga could run on Intel chips, and focus on software sales instead of worrying about Hardware. Right now, I'm using a Mac Pro with 12 cores, and 24 threads. It's 6 years old, and would kick the snot out of an new Amiga one. It would be so cool to make custom Amiga builds. Imagine an Amiga OS that has Thunderbolt 2 or 3 capabilities, that can run AMD and Nvidia GPU's, duel Xeon CPU Motherboards, and no freaking Apple tax. :) Focus on the OS, and leave the Hardware alone.

      The Amiga OS should be rebuilt on top of Linux or BSD Kernels, and just market it as a proprietary desktop environment, or OS. It would have loads of software that can already be used. Right now, Linux is more impressive, I still have respect for the Amiga, because it is the reason I got into computers when I did.

    I can't believe the media toolbox still defaults to 1024 for the block size. It's written everywhere that 512 is recommended for SFS, yet they left the default 1024, so new users who didn't read the manual will end up with sub-optimal settings :\

    IIRC, I think I remember that OS4 comes with a file driver system that allows any application to deal with a specific file type through the driver. Like there is an MS Word driver that allows any Amiga application to use MS Word files and save as MS Word files. Assuming I am recalling this correctly, does this work well? To me, it seemed like a no-brainer and we should probably have something similar for Windows.

    I would love to see 4.2 developed for x86 as well. I think that could help the OS garner developers to create software which could be recompiled later for PPC versions and other New Amiga OS variants like MorphOS and AROS.

    • @janmansde3dede
      @janmansde3dede 8 років тому

      +TGOTR Unfortunately it's too late to turn to x86.
      AmigaOS developers from time to time said that making a x86 port would require time and resources beyond what they have right now.
      Not bashing PowerPC,me and others find it fun to explore and program for this now exotic architecture.

I have an A500 in working order which is at the moment purely ornamental but at some point will be upgraded and used again, an A1200 which I use for games and is my pride and joy, a badly damaged A1200 which I intend to save somehow, and the motherboard from another A1200, which I intend to put in a towercase with as many upgrades and mods and extra bits of cool as I can get my hands on.

    Thanks Dan, I enjoy your videos.
    I find the OS4 question interesting. I see you get excited about the new features and things that make it 'better', but the more it 'improves' - I just feel.. it gets closer to a PC... close enough to make me think "its a rubbish PC" rather than "its a great Amiga".
    A subtle, but VERY important shift in outlook/attitude..
    I guess you do not share this view... but why? when you do your videos - may be don't focus on the technical features (which just reinforce my view) and focus on how the features enhance the Amiga experience? Do others share this feeling? Interested in your/others thoughts
    Keep up the good work.

      TO you and others , mine keeps on getting knocked off for one reason only .I tell the truth.UAE means emulation... meaning ..not really a real amiga.therefore and also, not a doing a real good job.Its 8bit like other x86s ,and pc=mac.,and 8bit thru out the system just like .the x86 system. sad fact. Even on the classic Amiga. The so called classic 4.1 os is really a 8bit os trying to run on the classic hardware ,and doing a poor job.i know I have run both. Neither can do true real-time multitasking . It called time sharing ..dang cache and memory protection ..is what non multitasking system have.
      os 3.92 is still the best oh yeah . we where going PARISC=ITANIUM KOOKSY yeah thats who u are. PPC isnt what its cracked up to be.

      You can read about Java here:
      jamiga2.blogspot.no/2013/05/a-telnet-client-in-java-on-amigaos-41.html
      If you wont do C/C++ development then yes can use GCC/G++ compilers, that is the standard compilers.
      I have water-cooling kit in my AmigaONE-X1000, to keep the notice down, what you run into is that mounting brackets don't fit so a bit customization brackets is needed to make them fit. It bit risky modification.

      @zaxxon9662 8 років тому

      Forget expensive, the problem is that with not writing a version for Intel i7 CPUs or even i5 means we are stuck at intel Atom type performance PPC regardless of cost. OS4 deserves to be run on a brute of a CPU to show the world the Amiga way was better...just like the turd of a CPU that was 8086 vs 68000 of Mac/ST/Amiga in 1985 we now have a perverse reversal of the situation, it is Amiga that is stuck on stupidly slow and feature devoid CPU.

      G4 is supported dispite not being mentioned but you were to lazy to read all sources, were you not? You just need MorphOS which is the open version of AmigaOS. The kernel itself is helas not open source and some drivers are props. MorphOS offers support for the eMac, iBook G4, Mac mini G4, Pegasos 1 & 2, PowerBook G4, Power Mac G4, Power Mac G5 and Sam460

    +Dan Wood (kookytech.net) Love your videos! I have been wanting to try getting some flavor of UAE running with the new 4.1 final edition classic. I am not a UAE expert however, so I am very interested in your video on that! If you can show what steps you use, and what software is needed to get that running, I would love it! I already bought a copy of 4.1 classic, so I am all set! :)

    I have a 1200 up in the loft and seriously considering bringing it down as I've been wanting to go back and use it. I'm a bit worried about leaking capacitors and any problems that may have come from leaving it in the loft. Does anyone know if there is a 'touch up' / repair service where we can send them off to be cleaned and checked? Hmm that sounds a bit bad - it's a long story how it ended up up there!
    Or are there any decent guides? Dan, if you could do a video on cleaning/repairs, that would be really great please :D Only if you have spare time obviously :) Just pointers, or things what to look out for if we open them up.
    I only just noticed that there were a few New Old stock Amiga 1200s sold by Amiga Kit. Pretty gutted i missed out!!
    OS 4 looks pretty nice. It's sad to hear that the company had all that trouble shortly after releasing it. :\

      treguard1982 Btw watching your videos over the last few months is really what made me want to bring the amigas down and dust them off.
      I'm just in the process of cleaning the keyboard membrane with isopropyl and then using BBCream on the keys. I think I'll then connect it back up to the PCB just to see if the 1200 will boot up ok

    Total ripoff, way to expensive.
    How do these people expect to get products in the market if their potential customers cannot afford the Hardware/Software?
    This business model will not work.
    If Hyperion supported Apple G4/G5 then they would probably stand a chance, as their are plenty of owners that got burned by Apple when Apple dropped PowerPC.

    Hmm... is it AROS or MorphOS that is sort of architecture (CPU/GPU and so on) independant? I would love to have a ARM AmigaOS... it would rock, AmigaOS (low resource, really really quick) with the a low power ARM... would be really cool with like (nowadays) running on the old Nvidia Tegra K1... or Raspberrypi 3...

    Is it possible to install Amiga OS on an old Mac G3 Blue Tower model ?

    • @pikachuchujelly7628
      @pikachuchujelly7628 8 років тому

      +Jonny Myrberg Probably not. The only Mac that successfully ran AmigaOS was the Mac Mini G4, and by "ran", I mean not well. It lacked drivers and required Moana Loader and a customized installation disc. Some G4 and G5 Macs can run MorphOS, which is an Amiga-like operating system that can run Amiga software. There's nothing you can do with a G3, besides emulation I guess.

    • @Steril707
      @Steril707 7 років тому

      It's difficult to port over because the 68K processor had a different endianness than the x86. PPC had the same.

    • @lpseem3770
      @lpseem3770 7 років тому

      Apple had money to port everything back into x86. Commodore hadn't and legacy software would run forever on emulators anyway.

    • @ForOdinAndAsgard
      @ForOdinAndAsgard 5 років тому

      Different instruction set. An Amiga is however capable of hardware emulating an x86 with a Bridgeboard and as thus can run Windows up too '98 though very slow if not vampired. I think it might even run Windows 2000 and 4.0 NT but I never tried. Because it is a hardware emulation you have both instruction sets at your command at the same time which makes it very powerful indeed. I use the Bridgeboard mainly with DOS 6.0 to run old MS-DOS games like C&C. Because of the Bridgeboard and my co processor 68030 I can also run Amix since the Bridgeboard gives me IDE and as thus a CD-ROM and extra HD capability.

    Awesome video, many thanks! :) I Have an Amiga One MicroA1, and I have not touched it for atleast 7 years, I remember that the lack of a decent web browser was the biggest reason I did not use it. Is the Odyssey Web browser fully CSS and HTML5 compatible? Like, can you watch UA-cam videos in it without having to use external programs and players that download the videos before playing them? I realize that a MicroA1 is kinda weak for youtube watching, but still... Would be nice... :)
    Also, remember the CPU Fan was loud as hell on it. :D

    • @danwood_uk
      @danwood_uk  9 років тому +2

      Maria Engström Odyssey is fully CSS compatible and supports HTML 5 yes, it's webkit based. It doesn't seem to play UA-cam for me on OS4 but it does on MorphOS, maybe it's a newer version. But yes, it is certainly possible if it gets an update or configured properly it seems.

    OMG... the inside of the Commodore PC is a sad shame. With the amount of love you have for the brand and the sexy looking tower case. You really should take a weekend and rebuild it as well as hearing you complain about the potential for over heating and things of that nature. The dust alone is deadly to the old hardware. Make it a live stream so we can sit by a watch you restore the PC. Just a thought..😜👌

    • @danwood_uk
      @danwood_uk  5 років тому

      I haven’t had the case/machine for about 4 years now, hopefully the new owner is enjoying it. It’s not an original commodore case though, it was a company that licensed the name around 2008. They were pretty nice cases though.

    You've stated that this motherboard is getting flakey with lockups, etc - have you ever considered buying a couple containers of canned air and blowing out the tons of dust that are laying all over the motherboard and add-on cards? You might be surprised with a more stable system if you actually cleaned out all that dust.
