    So what did you learn?
    1. Greed is bad actually. The AI declares war constantly on Apollo, you can’t afford to simcity the whole game with minimal military and no base defenses. The speed at which cities are captured took you by surprise. It won’t next time. (Also, aquatic cities are extremely vulnerable and nearly impossible to defend unless you have some kind of choke point you can hold the enemy off at, I do not recommend them for your early expands.)
    2. Affinity is key. Enemy tech advances can sneak up on you and before you know it you’re fighting units twice as strong as yours. Your tech focus should therefore be decided by affinity moreso than whatever nifty building or unit is unlocked. Sometimes those are worth it, but not at the cost of losing wars. Also prioritize expeditions on progenitor ruins because they can grant free affinity level ups, and give artifacts that can’t be acquired outside of expeditions.
    3. Industry and might are much, much more powerful than prosperity, and knowledge is almost always a luxury you can’t afford on Apollo. You need to improve your city’s productivity and your units’ efficacy. The might virtue that gives 20% more affinity xp might be the best in the game. The industry virtue that improves domestic trade by 25% might be the second best.
    4. Health is not happiness. You can sit at low or negative health without issue (though the AI will be more aggressive to you if you’re negative), and you should view health more as a cap to your expansionism and to how many health-consuming tile improvements you can build (manufactories!!!). Units on the field are more important, as they let you win wars and take money, cities and tech(!!!) from your enemies. The unit cap is determined by city count and population. Also, more cities means more trade routes.
    5. Victory. You’re looking to achieve actual victory in the game, not just spin the wheels of your empire. This more than anything should determine every action you take, but most importantly it should determine your tech path. There’s all sorts of neat units and buildings and bonuses and wonders in the tech web but never forget that a web is a trap. Keep your focus and win the game instead of flexing with your eco while the AI sneaks in the win.

    Soooo, the reason he decided to quit this match in particular is because one of the A.I. opponents is 22 turns away from winning the game, and she cannot be stopped on time. But Potato said that "He has learned a lot!!"... Let's see, if he uses that knowledge!

    • @bunnyben5607
      @bunnyben5607 17 годин тому +14

      This is one of the dumbest parts of the game. The AI can get extremely lucky occasionally and get a 200 turn win if one of their explorers happens to get the decode signal. I've stopped it before, but you essentially have to have the a strong standing military or it just becomes outright impossible to win.

    I felt despair set in when Potato seemed to forget what the victory conditions are. The game does expect you to aim your research at one. But, even if you don't know what the enemy's victory condition building does, you can try to blow it up! 22 turns is a decent hunk of time.

    Some suggestions if you plan on doing another run:
    Affinity focusing is unfortunately the first thing you want to prioritize, as your affinity levels dictate how powerful your army is. You can't feasibly get points into every affinity until the late game. Pick up a second Affinity if you wish, but make sure they are equivalent. In this case, hard focusing is actually detrimental, as any levels you gain in the second Affinity are better put in the first.
    Look at available strategics right off the bat and focus that Affinity. You'll level up your units faster, which makes the AI less willing to declare war on you.
    Health isn't that big an issue if it's negative, as long as it's not too crazy. You're perfectly fine dropping at least until -10.
    Wipe out the Aliens near your territory, but don't push them into the red. Their constant movement makes working specific tiles annoying. When you get the Ultrasonic Fence, always pick the Trader buff.
    Excavate with Explorers ALL THE TIME. Return to base if they need more modules. The benefits to excavating are significantly better than resource pods, which can also be collected by any unit. You can even get Affinity levels, which are HUGE.
    Pay attention to other leaders agendas. Try to at least satisfy 2 of them. Provided they like you enough, they aren't likely to declare war unless you're chasing a Victory condition.

    • @Solus749
      @Solus749 12 годин тому +4

      didn't help that he spied on basicly everyone and got discovered. Other than that pretty solid, going for 2 different affinities is fine just don't leap into the third unless you have good reasons for it. Stealing specific tech options can get you into all three for example but I wouldn't go all three normally.
      Oohh and if you do spread affinites do pay attention to what the enemies/ai do because they will trigger victory conditions....this is where not skimping on military helps.

    • @electricheisenberg5723

      @@electricheisenberg5723 Well no, that still adds up to 12, but it's easier to achieve because diversifying your Affinity requires less tech.

      @@Solus749 You're pretty much safe from AI win cons unless they've built their Planetary Wonder (as the only win con that doesn't require it is Conquest).
      Unlike with Science victories in Civ 6, you just need to pillage (in the case of Promised Land) or destroy/capture the city with the Wonder, as they will be forced to rebuild it.
      The game also announces when players make progress to win cons, so realistically, you should take action before it gets to that point.
      The issue with the Contact win con is that it's the easiest out of every win condition. It's extremely low investment compared to the others and can even be speedrun if you find the proper outcome from a Precursor Ruin. The only thing that the Beacon does once powered is that it totally prevents you from earning Energy while it's active.

    I actually just beat the game for the first time on Apollo difficulty cause your videos got me interested again. The strat I found was unlock ecology first for the sonic fences and eventual protection for trade routes. Then go into pioneering for the settlers. Get a few basic techs for resource production like petroleum and titanium then b-line a few techs that will get you level 5 or 6 into harmony. Focus harmony and the three needed techs in the harmony victory then just turtle as best you can. It is the most consistent and least work heavy victory by a long shot.

    Science is not a linear progress, countries don't focus on one thing at a time either, so it'd be super cool if rather than research one tech, you had a giant web and gained progress in a bunch of them at a time, with certain actions, like gaining buildings, units, spycraft, conquering enemy cities with technologies already researched, etc... would give you points in a lot of your technologies.

    Industry Tree ain't bad, a small investment of 3 virtues yields this great Energy virtue. When you have 10 000 Energy, you can basically buy anything every couple of turns, and don't really lose out on money. Also, it helps kickstart any new city by making strateguc purchases, and an energy stock can be great to create an army out of thin air when you get attacked.
    I also love later Industry virtues like the one giving 0.5 Industry per pop in a city, and the one giving 0.2 health per building in a city. Sadly they require quite the investment in virtues.

    The problem wasn't that you didn't have enough cities, the problem was that your cities were basically undefended, and the AI decided that those weren't going to be your cities anymore. You can't go full simcity in beyond earth, you NEED to have some military and you NEED to have good combat strength on your cities, or else the AI will forever deathwar you, especially on harder difficulties. Your problem was also that a LOT of your cities were coastal, and that is the easiest way to loose your cities by not having a strong navy to act as a deterrent for an AI to just walz on in and snag a couple of cities.

    Potato, you are a brilliant Civ-player and a great UA-cam creator. That being said, if I found your hand on my wallet, I'd declare war on you too. 🤠😈😇

      I had the same issue. What fixed it was deleting the contents of the folder in steam and then verifying the game files.

    What I remember HATING about this game was that-- as a build and expand game - you were essentially punished for having more than about 3? 4? settlements. Recall management of Health a chore. One of the few games I truly regret purchasing. Have not touched it in years.

    • @Fat_Paws
      @Fat_Paws 17 годин тому +5

      It is one of the few civ games where crazy early expansion doesn't always pay off. Wide is still better than tall, but you need the ability to get a new settlement "up and running." quickly Managing health is similar to managing happiness in Civ V, in many ways.
      Several things went wrong here. Constant war is definitely the biggest factor. Potato's first few settlements were in relatively bad locations (should have moved in-land imo) both for yields and defense. Internal trade routes should have been up and running a lot earlier. etc. etc.
      Some games just don't pan out. I still feel BE has aged better than Civ V, even though it felt like a Civ V total conversion mod back in the day. Also, I haven't played it in years. Who knows how I will manage after all these years of Civ VI?

      Only in the early game. By late game you have infinity health and can cover the whole map in cities.

    • @czechmeoutbabe1997
      @czechmeoutbabe1997 16 годин тому

      I feel like unfortunately Potato lost a bunch of cities and spent a lot of production getting them back and settling new ones instead of science buildings and more culture which could get those strong health bonuses through affinity and policy. He was too focused on boosting health at the city level with buildings instead of pushing on and unlocking macro-bonuses, which as you can see, completely flipped the situation and he ended with 50 health. Also he ended up doing so much war that he could have pivoted to military hard and just conquered the continent.

    • @Solus749
      @Solus749 12 годин тому +1

      you can have negative health and be just fine it. All it does is lower ing productin and growth, what you don't do is skimping on military that is your number one way to lessen getting wars thrown at you. The second most important thing is paying attention to what opponents do and what their political goals are. If you want to avoid wars with them try to keep 2 of them in the green and DON'T spy on them ( atleast don't get discovered doing it ).
      Lastly don't overestimate how resistant to damage your cities are in BE compared to civ 5, civ 6 an army can roll a city in 1-2 turns. Even early game armies of just 2 soldiers and 1-2 rangers can take a city FAST.
