You have to go watch this movie starring the late great Sidney Poitier! It was pretty groundbreaking for its time. Here's what it's about. "The film, which was considered provocative at the time because of its call for racial harmony, earned Poitier an Oscar nomination for best actor; he became the first African American male performer to earn a nod in the lead category."
"Sir" referred to in the song is the teacher played by Sidney Poitier in the movie. He is an engineer who, while seeking a job as an engineer, takes a year to teach at a school in England for lower-class students who don't see themselves as having a future, and so don't take school seriously at all. Over the course of the year, Sir changes their attitude, and he becomes a beloved and admired role model. Even though Poitier is Black and all the students are white, race actually has little to do with the plot. I don't think the character of the teacher was written with a Black teacher in mind, and I think that's why Poitier wanted to play the part--essentially that the part was not race-specific. Lulu plays one of the students. You should really see the movie. It's heart-warming. By the way, in the film, the song has three verses, rather than the two that you heard in the performance in the video.
She was one of the stars of the movie, along with the legendary Sidney Poitier. There was an excellent ensemble cast backing them up as well. You should react to the movie, it's an excellent 60s film.
I love this song. It just has a feel to it especially if you know the movie. The photographs in the video are from the film. Lulu is the girl with the short red hair. I, and almost everyone else here, mentions the movie. Even if you don't do a reaction to it, you should watch it on your own. It's a classic must-see and one of my all time favorites. After watching LuLu play one of the students and then sing this song, you'll always think of the movie whenever you hear it.
Lulu began her career in the UK before becoming internationally known. She had a big hit with the song "To Sir With Love" from the 1967 film, which she also starred in with Sidney Poitier. She also did the title song to the 1974 James Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun". She also did the songs "Boom Bang-a-Bang", "Shout", "Leave A Little Love", "Try To Understand", "The Boat That I Row", "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby)", "I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do)" etc. Lulu was married at one time to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.
@@frankkinley6272 Yes from 1969 till 1973. they were friends after divorce, and sung together a beautiful Bee gees song, Maurice Gibb on An Audience with Lulu - First Of May
A number of years ago I had the privilege of meeting Lulu at Glastonbury Festival backstage. Well we didn't actually meet. I'm sorry no selfie. She was going on stage and our eyes met. I simply nodded and gave her a thumbs up. She smiled at me.
Great singer and huge song. Lulu married Maurice GIBB in 1969. They divorced in 1973. In 2002, they reunited to sing a duet in a very touching live rendition of "First of May", a wonderful moving Bee Gees track from 1969.
My sister was born in 1967. I was born in 1966. But I’ve recently watched the movie ‘To Sir, With Love’. Great movie! Lulu had a part in the movie as well.

In 2002 Maurice Gibb appeared on a TV special “an audience with Lulu. I think you’ll enjoy watching the song they sang together. I loved how she introduced him. The whole segment was touching.
Her voice is unreal. She could sing the phone book and I would like it. So strong with so much control and emotion. One of my all time favorite singers. There's a version of her singing Nights In White Satin here on UA-cam that is so incredibly good.
Lulu started in the business in her teenage years also from Scotland, this is a film which she was also in. First husband one of the twins from The Bee Gees, not sure if you knew that Robin and Maurice were twins, but married to Maurice in the 60's and remained friends until his death and actually got to work with him and his two remaining brothers not that long before he passed away, Lulu has been in The Eurovision Song Contest back in the 60's I think and is still working today, she's great friends with Sir Elton John and would work with him at his concerts
