Ahhhh......so that's why when I run p8 she drops only one rune?? I kept wondering why that was lol🤣
@@abyss6945 runes also don't care about MF. It doesn't hurt the drop chance of runes either, except if you have less DPS because you're running MF instead. In that case you'll ofc kill enemies slower and thus find less runes indirectly (but that's worth the trade off unless you're specifically only interested in runes)

The countess rune drop was not explained by Phil. So I'll explain why it's better on Players 1.
Countess can drop maximum 3 runes. The first 2 are in their own loot table that only has runes. They can be nothing or a rune. So you can get up to two runes that way regardless of players count.
The third rune (bonus rune) is in the drop table with her other actual loot. Countess will always have a certain number of drops. Note well some of the drops can be nothing and as Phil said, lower players count equals a higher chance of the drops to be nothing. If a drop from the countess is nothing, then it can be a rune. The other way of saying it is, loot gets higher priority for drops than runes, so only if the game says no to a loot drop, can then that drop have a chance to be a rune.
Note well a loot drop in this case is one item. She can drop a few items so each one is a loot drop and each one can be nothing, or loot or a rune - up to a maximum of one rune this way.
The short of it is:
Rune 1 - RNG chance regardless of players count
Rune 2 - RNG chance regardless of players count
Rune 3 - Only has a chance to drop when a loot drop would otherwise be nothing. So a lower player count (ie 1 or 2) is best.
Note well 1 - Each rune has an independence chance of dropping. So say hypothetically in a run of the tower and countess, get one rune from the countess. You will not know if that rune is Rune 1 or Rune 2 or Rune 3.
Note well 2 - Players 1 or 2 is better also because better kill speed so more countess kills per hour. Good if you only want runes.
Note well 3 - Terror Zones will not change how many runes drops but could potentially chance what runes drop on each difficulty. This depends on how the rune type is calculated. If it is by game difficulty, then no change. If it is by monster level, then this might change as Countess will be a higher level in the Terror Zones.
Absolutely correct. Yesterday, I run 16x times P8 countess and never more than one rune dropped. I didnt know, what you are describing here, so I thought shes bugged. Today I just tried to do some runs on P1 and 3 times out of four runs she dropped three runes.
I have been getting low runes even on Nightmare... at level 65... oof.

Really nice breakdown. It would be interesting to do follow up on how Item Find on Barb affects this.
Someone explained higher up in the comments that find item (when successful) is still affected by player count. The thing that makes zerk find item barb op though is that it can fear mobs away from uniques and snipe them for max loot (regardless of player count) and then hork them for double loot (regardless of player count), same goes for champions I think. But super uniques, white mobs and act bosses are all affected by player count.

The short of it is champions and uniques have the best drop tables, and these monsters have set drop amounts unaffected by playersX command.
This is incorrect and a common misconception. If you go to many of the drop calculator websites, which has been verified by the community, you will see that players in area and players in game increase the chances of certain items dropping based on how many people you got. This is why on Switch, we can't have 8 player games but a Barbarian who is horking will force items to drop on an 8 player difficulty.
@@polkhigh_33 I'm actually right because the drop calculator shows the drop tables for everything in the game. I wasn't talking about the no drop chance in my comment either. I was talking about the increase in drop chance which is affected by the amount of players in the game and area. Elite sniping is very good in split games too.
@@polkhigh_33 so drop quality is also effected by the area you are in. You need to be in an area with monster level 85 to have a chance of every item dropping.

@@newman1711 I have a feeling you're talking about something else though. NORMAL mobs will drop more items with higher /players #. But what they are saying is that elite packs will always drop a set amount of items, and so lowering their no drop chance doesn't do anything for those. And when players are farming high level areas, they are looking for the best items in the game.... which in most cases can only drop from elite packs.
If I understand them correctly, Pindle and Baal would be exceptions to this since they are high enough level unique mobs and so they do have a chance to not drop items, which you can lower that chance by using a higher /players #
But when farming just level 85 zones like The Pit, people usually focus on the elite packs to get the highest item level uniques. And in that case, they might as well use /players 1 (or /players 3 if it doesn't affect clear speed much)
Does that make sense now? (tbh I'm not sure I fully understand it myself)
High player counts are good for volume farming for things like runes. Elite hunting, p1 is go-to since otherwise mobs just get in the way. But if your toon can kill p3 or p5 as fast as p1 or maybe just a notch slower, then by all means run p3 or p5.

Hi there Phil, always watch your videos. great content. I am currently farming Pindleskin for grail uniques. I do not count how many times I killed him but definietely over one thousand. I play with hork barb at level 96 with 711 MF. Pindle dropped almost every unique (sometimes 2 to 3 times) that he is capable of from the top rare list: 3x crown of ages, templar's might, death's fathom, death's web, cranium basher, caduceus etc. the only thing that he didn't drop (i haven't found it since the D2R launch) is Griffon's Eye...
Found 2 griffs st wsk normal mob pre seasons of d2 r

I play single. I finally received my first high rune (on Trav Hell). Highest before was a Gul. I'm grateful... But it was a Cham, so I just jumped past my Enigma runes. 😔

I used to play solo ladder in s1 and s2 and just by farming around and enjoying builds I got enough runes to make my own enigma (ber was from LK and Jahs where from cows) then cta (ohm from super chest in arcane sanctuary), etc. Death's fathom from chaos, etc. The wildest one was back to back Lo Runes from the countess (apparently that is the highest rune she could drop), so i ended up making grief and fortitude and farmed torches. Got my soj in hell from catacobs. Eventually, I got a ber from locked chest behind mephisto and one from cows to make infinity. P1 farming as long as you just keep slaying a lot can be very rewarding, even solo.
So as a P1 farmer, i should skip white and target farm unique/champion ?
Does /player8 command work on xbox single player offline or there's no way of getting that gameplay? I want to play on xbox but that would definitely make me go to pc. Thanks for your help!
Both bers I found was on pl8 alone. Both Surs however on pl1.
Only play solo on bnet, Ive found some HR and a Jah. Mostly on a summon necro. Sadly no Dweb, Griffons etc...
Any advice for a sorc in hell? I was a lightning sorc and made it to diablo but my lightning was crap so I Respec and I ran out of respecs now I am stuck with a sorc mastered in all elements, why they make all them monsters weak to lightning in hell it sucks ass man so hard to get infinity!
No drop chance is only on normal trash mobs. Does NOT effect uniques and super uniques. Thanks for clarifying this!
I need clarification on what not having players near you online have to do with drop odds.
90% of my magic find time is on meph > portal, teleport eldrich, shenk, log out. I skip Pindle since it feels out of the way once shenk is done. The other 10% is cows and randomly chosen lvl 85 areas. I’m always solo on players 1 and this means I don’t need overly expensive gear. When I have played with friends my kill speed goes down a lot and I end up standing around waiting for them to finish. I much prefer players 1.
One of Pindles biches gave me a Jah now I Never skip Pindle.
Trust me you can find stuff on p1. I just got a Lo from cows.

yea ofc u can. thats anecdotal though, since that's only one rune.
Of course you can, I found nearly all my stuff in P1 games with my MF 500 sorc. I mostly focused on bosses that are not affected by P count. But eventually you will want to get runes and that's were increasing P count really helps.
Found 2 Jah on chaos and baal run P1 a tons of Nice unique like Dweb, shako, nice rings and great charms...i definitly stay P1 unless i need leech xp then i go for multi.

I've been playing d2 solo on players8 for as long as I can remember, reason being that I want more of a challenge, I don't care that much for drops or xp benefits, I just wanted to make the game harder because it was way too easy on p1 ... :D but everything in this video is true and good to know.

On P1 I’ve found COA, Shako, deaths fathom, and deaths web.

@@jeffhagopian4742 Lol i pretty much only play p1 too and have found probably 20 ber, 25 jah, 100's of high level uniques and rares over the years. It's often easier to get into the flow of spamming private games and mindlessly running travincal or chaos sanctuary over and over, rather than waiting around for public games. I do find public games more fun though generally:) But yeah copy me and go level 50+ characters to above level 90 and then see the loot you get ;)

This is an excellent summary about how to improve your finds!
My recommendation for starting out from scratch is the blizzard sorceress. She can kill non-cold-immunes with ease and with no gear at all. The best place for that is the Tunnels, found in the act 2 Forgotten City. If your merc is too weak to kill those few cold-immune bosses there , even when using telekinesis on them (which puts them into hit recovery most of the time), just skip them by teleporting away. She's also excellent versus Mephisto and Andariel who will drop all bread and butter items you need. Run those two a thousand times and you will probably have most of the items you need for all your characters.

2 days ago i made horking barbarian for farming pit, but it was too slow and i started doing only travi runs. Yesterday i have Ber dropped and today Ohm after maybe 20 runs in day. 😁

@@bmprosser Same, no rune higher than an UM. However, the amount of 15 ias, 40ed jewels and rare lld jewels ive got from trav made me rich. Not to mention all the charms they drop.

and helped me get the best gear for my Smiter and Hork Barb.

I found my first maras in a solo run. 🤟🏼
buy two more computers that can run D2R at the lowest specs, buy the labor day on sale D2R two more CD keys to set up alts, play with yourself on P3. make a sorc, pally, and barb rotation. the sorc teleports everywhere and the barb gives high level BO. get three mercenaries with different auras. rotate the pally out with other characters you want to try. sure this costs way more than buying enigma from some third party site. but's way more fun if you don't have people who can play with your consistently.

Or...hear me out... Just join some "act 1 hell" games with your tele sorc and push the guys through the game. Afterwards give them some spare uniques or some rare ring or some 4os monarch. Or ask If you should boost another char of them. I made a lot of frieds with this. And now I can play players 3 whenever I want.
If I can't click on the drops before someone else grabs them, it doesn't matter that there are more of them because I still don't get anything

I know you like to just kill the main packs but I’ve actually had some of my best drops come from fallen,devilkin, and the likes. I just slay everything I see.
Grinded my Titan's Revenge non-stop in Mephisto Nightmare just for it to Drop twice in a row in Hell's Cow in a single day on P1...

You need to have 7 players in the area for it to be the best chance of a rune dropping.
You could theoretically play 24/7 for the rest of your days and never find a single high rune. Just play without any expectations and whatever happens happens.
I've been farming on players 1 since launch and have probably found more high runes and gear that people who grind on players 8. RNJesus just loves me 😅
This ladder I've made CoH, infinity, Exile, dual dreams, Beast, flickering flame and have a Lo rune in the stash.
2 arachnid meshes, SoJ, dracs, 2 Andy helms, 3 Mara's, 15/38 jewel, 3/19/20 sc, among other things.
I only played every other week because of my work schedule and all that was either found or traded using P1 on ladder. The best thing I ever found in a multi player game if value was a perfect nightwing's veil off diablo. That's it. You can do just fine on P1. Knowing what's worth trading too is a huge step up.
When I was younger I made enigma and it took me FOREVER to cube up to it because I didn't know how to make good builds or trade stuff.
Players close to you also gain more experience. I've been helping people level up at the Moo Moo Farm & randoms come in thinking you're clearing the level for items. Don't be one of those randoms 😉
interesting headline - im all ears..... never play with people even on Bnet majorly i play there for trades - but games mostly solo
It's unfortunate that consoles don't have this advantage to change the player difficulty at will like PC does. On console you can only trust your friends and clans jumping into your lobby for farming some runs but it is less likely in public Rando lobbies because they will just take the drop and leave after getting what they want.
Console has that ability on offline mode.
Player difficulty on consoles was added ages ago. It's called "Offline Difficulty Scaling" in the options

Bro.. I’ve done 100+ straight cow runs and Baal runs in p8 and garbage has dropped..then I go and do some solo trav runs and find Jah , sur in like 25 runs. Just farm however you like and don’t think so hard about it. Trading is what you need to get good at anyway.
Right 100% not true. I've had a death fathom drop with 18mf first chaos run on my bowazon. Also another first chaos run my foh got a ber rune!

I've done like thousands of travincal runs and I can guarantee you there's no reason to do them on P3+.

This is incorrect. I would suggest joining a Discord community. I happen to run one with 280 players in it that play on Switch. I'm also a Mod for one that has over 1,000 people in the server.

What do you think abotu this suggestion: Allowing online players to create games from P1 to P8 difficulty (public games only) without it affecting the MF or Drop chances of monsters just to not be forced into a gimmick / stress if you're just trying to level up. This would make the grind to 99 soothing and make people want to pvm for fun rather than feel like it's a waste of time since they get nearly no xp. Quite frankly, we're all familiar with the fact that farming is a waste of time if you use "certain tools". It's already a bit sad that people are forced to use Top builds for xp... idk. Before Terror zones were announced, this was my idea. P8 games without the mf/no drop bonuses of having more players... those would be assigned to more players only.
man, I wish online had the ability to increase player count difficultly like offline....so sick and tired of dropping Ral, Tir, Eth and Amn runes 99.9999998% of the time everywhere I farm

This isn't true at all. Having a grouped up party that shares loot is the best.
