Yes, we need to be careful too like how he said with what we hear. We shouldn't be decieved, I pray that lest it happen to us. 🙏

Thank you pastor John for bringing these texts to mind n how prophecy today is not the same as old test. Bc the church in new test was obviously practicing it in a way different from the old test prophets

Speaking in tongues simply means speaking in different tongues or languages. I speak in tongues since I speak French, Spanish and English. It was necessary to speak in tongues in the time of Jesus so that all the people, who spoke different languages, could understand his message. His message had to be interpreted, in other words.

Biblical tongues isn’t just knowing more than one language, it’s a little deeper than that. Biblical tongues is possessing the ability to speak a language you had never learned before. Just because you speak more than one language doesn’t mean you have the gift of tongues, it just means you’re bilingual, or in your case trilingual. Hope this helps! God bless!

Being bilingual or multilingual is not what Acts and 1 Corinthians means by speaking in tongues.

      No.

Scripturally Paul also talks of speaking in languages of angels and most commonly describes that when people speak in toungues no one can understand them. This gift clearly serves an important role in the body of Christ which is what scripture supports but many times its not in known languages like in the day of pentacost. And it's definetly not just speaking multiple languages. Pretty much all the apostles spoke multiple languages, greek was widely spoken in this time which is how the new testament was first written, as was Aramaic and they read scriptures in Hebrew. But that ability to speak multiple languages is never described as speaking in toungues. I disagree with your interpretation

@@MatthewMurraycogswoth It's not always the case that no one understands what they are saying. In acts, during the Pentecost, the people walking by said, "How is it we hear them in our own language and in our own tongue?" So, many times that is not the case.

If I may ask a little more expounding, how could this not be against Sola Scriptura? Aren't all that we need to know has been provided by God through His written word? Thank you in advance.

If God speaks to someone, it is infallible. If God speaks to someone, it is as authoritative as His word. There's no way around it. Because God speaking, either through His Word or through others, has the same level of authority because it is coming from God.

Perhaps, but there is no way to tell the difference between a prophesy from God and something someone made up and believed was from God. Thus, prophesy cannot be seen as authoritative.

    • @zachdavenport8509

@Rebecca Z. I'm not sure I'm willing to go that far. Just because it is not authoritative doesn't mean it can't be instructive and possibly from God. I have heard prophecy that is far too specific and accurate to be natural. Not to mention the lack of scriptural support for prophesy ceasing. That doesn't however mean that God has super-intended the manner in which the prophet speaks with what they were given and we also are not fully able to determine if it is from God. So it's not authoritative, but I do believe God still speaks to people.

@Rebecca Z. Hmm. What leads you to believe that? My reading of 1 Corinthian's discussion of prophecy seems to imply something different from apostolic authority which is what scripture is.

Zach Davenport the way we determine whether it’s from God or not is by looking at what the Bible says. Does what was said line up with scripture? If it does, then it can be trusted as God’s word to you through another person. If what was said does not align with scripture, then take it with a grain of salt. To align with scripture, a prophetic word must not ever be negative in connotation, Prophecy is edification, it is meant to uplift and encourage ALWAYS.

    • @zachdavenport8509

@@Itsallawesome I must have missed this until now. Sorry for the late reply. I think id add that it must accord with both scripture and reality. Someone could say something off the wall that is not necessarily unbiblical, but is also simply incorrect. God will never be incorrect.
But, I must also disagree that prophesy must be positive. Edification just means encouraging to grow in faith. This is not always a positive experience. It could include admonitions to stop sinning. Also, what we see of prophesy in scripture is not always positive. In the OT, it was usually negative. And, in Acts, a prophet tells Paul that if he goes to Jerusalem, he will be arrested and put in prison. He warns him not to go. That is a negative prophesy. And we can see it was from God because it came true.

Isnt there a difference betweren being partial (in part) and being fallible? A partial prophecy doesnt mean false. I think partial, or in part, will mean even true and infallible. I know topic A but not topic B of same subject is a partial knowledge but not fallible. To say that prophecy could be fallible is a huge mistake, and a license to deceit.
