- Old cut-up jeans make great reversible blankets, and the seams are just overlapped. It doesn't get much easier.

We make jean quilts at our senior centre quite often. We get donated jeans. We use electric scissors to cut off the inseams and outer seams - these are bundled together in 10 and 12 strips and tied in a large knot in the center and they make great dog toys. The quilts are a little larger - around 40x50 and 50 x 60 as people like to take them on picnics as well as dog blankets for the car. They wash up fantastically.
I like this idea of yours as we also get donated tons of fabric which would look great with the jeans - thank you for sharing.
What a great idea! I've been saving my old jeans for this project! I think I'm going to put some batting and a flannel back on mine.
Steve Emert: just be aware that adding batting and flannel backing will make the quilt extremely heavy.

After cleaning-out our closets we have a big pile of clothes that aren't quite donation worthy but will make great lap-quilts for the cars or outdoors and also backing for the cat's bedding. Thank U 4 GREAT IDEA!
I made a California King denim quilt for my Dad from his, my brother, and my husband's old jeans. I have lots of left over denim from that project. I love this idea and will be working on this in the near future.

I like this idea. I’ll have to ask family for old jeans to use. My sewing machine is a 1950’s singer model 411g. These and other similar models take 2 single needles for double rows of stitching. I’ve never tried it before, should be interesting. I’ll start sewing again in the fall when I get the time and do one of these. The machine raw edge binding will irk my wife. She had stitched the fold over binding on the 2 quilts I made before.

Great idea to use the fabrics on the back sides...sort of a quilt as you go idea but no quilt lining needed because the jean fabric is already heavy. I have lots of old jeans I've saved. Thanks so much for sharing your technique!

Wonderful tutorial! Thank you so much. I'm new to quilting and would like to make my sister, mother, and I simple memory lap size quilts using my dad's denim type coveralls, and striped and plaid dress shirts. I have also purchased some John Deere tractor print flannel and plaid flannels for backing, as he was a farmer. I wasn't sure about weight, heavy seams, whether or not to line with batting, and if I'm biting off more than I can chew. I think this is the perfect technique, to keep things simple, attractive, and fun. Thank you!
Well, I'm so glad I watched this through. There are just Tooo Many other good designs out there. I don't care for the look of the unfinished seams.

I love this idea! My husband knows to give me his old jeans when he's worn them out and I use them, but now I have another great fun project to try! The over lap method for joining is genius for the thick denim. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

I’ve been making denim quilts for years now. They are the most comfortable quilts to sleep under; they’re heavy & oh so warm, like sleeping under a big hug!! I use minkee or fleece to back mine, no batting necessary.
This is a great idea. I think I would try this same thing with the stack of old jeans I have in my sewing room. I would probably alternate each row with a 2-1/2" strip (by cutting the charm piece in half), so that I would not have seams that meet. My seams from row to row would be offset like bricks. Otherwise, I would do the same, randomly assigning a fabric piece with a denim piece, having some of the fabric show on the back, etc. This is a really great idea, and I'm going to have a staycation coming up soon--I might be able to get one done!
Not only was this extremely helpful, it was also pleasant and soothing after the hectic day I had.
I have several pair of my father’s jeans. This would be perfect to make small lap quilts for some family members. Maybe use some of his old flannel shirts. We couldn’t part with them all.
When you started this quilt i was dubious about how it would look, but it turned out great. Can't wait to do my own version. Thank you.

This was an absolute delight! I love how laid back this was, lots of options to choose from, and also love the idea of using it as a "personal picnic blanket" for outdoor reading!
Also love various recommendations, like testing a few squares to determine the look you want... I've never made a quilt, but have always wanted to, especially out of DENIM, so this is a perfect starting point for me!

Wow I love this technique! I made a denim & flannel rag "memory" blanket...it came out beautiful, but was bulky & difficult to sew. I have tons more denim squares, can't wait to try your way! Thanks!

Very nice. I did make a blanket like this one time and for the regular fabric I used old men’s shirts (checkered). It could also make a precious memory quilt.

Thank you for the neat idea, Laura! I asked my family for some of their old jeans so I could try this project, and I have a good variety of denims now to work with! It'd be a great blanket to take with us on day trips and not have to worry about ruining it (^_^)

I have made 4 jean blankets all by hand ! 2 I gave to family and the other 2 I have for sale . I had fun making them ,😀
When I do raw-edge binding, I cut the strips with pinking shears (the finished binding tends to lay down a bit ‘neater’j. Enjoyed your tutorial.

This would be a perfect time to use your coverstitch on your serger. For a nice contrast use fabric and the double fold binder.

I had the same problem but made a normal quilt with batting. It got a little stiff but is very good for cold times. Denim is perfect for a picnic. I diminished the thickness by making a back application with flanell and cutting out

Sorry, but this is the first thing you've done that I really don't care for. I've seen denim quilts before and didn't like those either. But keep up the good work. BTW, I love your sewing room, it puts mine to shame but then I don't have the space that you have. I love your tutorials.
Nice……a little tip…… if you are buying old jeans from charity/second hand shops, look for BIG SIZES, this way you get more fabric for your money AND you can work out the size of your squares accordingly so that you don’t waste material. I have some denim in my stash and am going to have a go at this as it’s one of those projects that you can really make your own by colours. Thanks sooooo much for a good idea.

Rewatching & wondering/thinking how would it look to randomly cover center of the 4-patch with a charm square on both front & back. Two pair of old jeans...huummm.
