Thank you for the video. My husband passed away years ago and I kept all of his clothes. I plan to make quilts for my kids and you have made it look so simple and I've gotten some great ideas! Again, thank you so much! And by the way, for those of you who haven't used the quilting scissors to make the fray, they are life savers.
Thanks for sharing, Debbie! What a wonderful way to honor your husband's memory. It will mean so much to your kids. And yes, definitely keep those snipper handy! 😊 Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Thank you for your video of tips and tricks! I haven’t made a quilt for years and never a blueJean quilt!!
Glad it was helpful! A blue jean quilt would be an easy way to begin quilting again. They go together easily and the 'quilting' is done as you sew and assemble the blocks. Hope you give it a try! Thanks for watching. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I did Jean quilt for my daughters 30th birthday and I put Jean pockets on and put candy, gum, 1.00 etc in pockets and mailed from NC to Arz. She said she looked in all the pockets and was thrilled to find the treats.
What a fantastic idea, Betty! Thanks for sharing. That's a perfect way to top of a jean quilt. 😍 Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Love your videos! I'm new to rag quilting & am totally addicted.
Awesome! Thank you for watching, Pat! You'll love making rag quilts b/c they are generally a quick finish and so very forgiving! 😍 Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I added pockets to mu daughters quilt. Not Done yet but so much fun to make.
Your right, Alisa, it's fun to personalize quilts! When your quilt is finished post it to IG #LeaLouiseQuilts so we all can see it. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
My oldest great grandson is getting one of these for nigh school graduation, thanks to you!! Didn't use my walking foot and regret it
Thanks for sharing that, Patricia! Your grandson will love it! I'm so glad you took on the project AND finished it. That's no small task!!
My son still uses his after nearly twenty years. It's now his family's favorite picnic blanket which makes me so happy. We sometimes forget the impact a simple quilt can make on someone's life. Quilter's have a special blessing to bring happiness to others. Okay, maybe too mushy but I love quilting and enjoy seeing the smiles when I gift a quilt. Keep on quilting, Patricia!

There isn't enough space between the foot plate and the top of the needle mechanism to fit a walking foot on my machine. Can you suggest anything to make sewing easier without one?
Thank you for the tips, I love it! Can’t wait to do one!
Enjoy making your own denim quilt! I've make a few and they are wonderful. Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I love using denim and flannel to make picnic quilts. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Denim quilts are great for all outdoor activities since they are so durable and easily washed. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Great idea for a picnic blanket 💡
I love this method of making a denim quilt. Thanks for this tutorial. What a great idea! 😊
You are so welcome, Janis! The offset rows make this rag quilt so much easier to handle as well as sew. It's a fun project! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
This is so helpful, I didn't have any idea where to start. I would have lost a lot of material. Thank you so much.
Glad it's helpful, Connie! It's not uncommon just to use blue jean legs for your rag quilt, but there's a lot more there for other projects too! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Good Morning. This Tracy from Virginia Beach. I just happened in to your tutorial and I just loved how you take the time to explain techniques. So I immediately subscribed to your channel. And looking forward to watching more for inspiration.
Hi Tracy, thanks for subscribing! It's great to have you following along. So glad you enjoyed my video and look forward to hearing from you again! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Another busy day for me getting things done and organized for Monday's filming. I so enjoy sitting with my hand quilting and watching your video! I hope you have an awesome day! Thanks for posting this video.
Who knew quilters keep so busy?! Especially YT Quilters! I love the challenge but it certainly gets hectic. LOL Enjoy you relaxing time and Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I have never made a rag quilt and you covered so many things I needed to know, like needle size. Thank you for the great information. Question: I intend to make mine with the denim side down. It's meant to be a picnic or outdoor tummy time quilt for my new granddaughter. I intend to use pockets as something for her to touch and play with (after reinforcing the buttons). Is there anything different I need to know when using the denim as the back, not the front?
Not at all, it'll work well either way, Kathy. My kids use theirs as a picnic blanket and they love it. You're granddaughter will love having it! It's great to have you following along! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I want to use a 10" pack of flannel. Can I just split them into 5" pieces and cut the denim smaller or do prefer the longer strips of denim?
Cutting the 10" squares smaller with absolutely work! The only reason I don't use 5" squares is it doubles the sewing and clipping time which makes a big difference on large quilts. Take a look at this video linked below and you'll see the difference. Then you decide which you prefer.

Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting,

Thanks for the great video.
Glad you liked it, Diana! Jean quilts are so versatile and every one I make turns out a bit different - which I love! Hope you get a chance to make your own. 😍 Happy Quilting,
Lea Lousie
Just a thought - I go to the laundromat the first couple of times to save my washer/dryer of the mess. I learned first hand when I washed a new Mexican blanket in my new appliances - Yikes a huge mess.
Fantastic idea, Louise! The laundromat machines are often quite large, too, which makes it easier. Thanks for watching! 😍 Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I made a denim quilt for my nephew. It was all the back pockets and I turned them all direction. Oh my sister would shack, turn an shack, turn and shack again. Cookies, toy and little hot wheels would come out. Than in washer more toys would fall out. She finally made him hang it on wall. Lol
That's a great quilt story, Robin! Let quilters be warned. LOL Thanks for sharing. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
So funny! Too many pockets.
Large rectangles are much better than the squares that the church group uses to make quilts for the homeless. I also like the border rows. These are great quilts but I have yet to make one.
They are wonderful quilts, Marsha! They can also be a lot to handle at your machine. That's why I work on denim quilts in sections. Maybe you'll try one someday! Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I don’t think you ever posted the picture of the completed quilt. At least, I don’t see it here. It would be nice to see.
You're right, Faith. It's hanging in the background but there's no image of the entire quilt. Videos can't be edited to add anything, so I can't do that. I'm doing a series of rag quilts in Jan which would be a great opportunity to show it off. Thanks for your comment! 😊 Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
So in theory if you're making this for a winter bed coveringyou could add a smaller rectangle of batting between denim and flannel when you add your stitching across the two pieces.
Absolutely, Carla! But beware how much heavier it'll be! My first jean quilt with batting weighs a ton!! LOL Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
@@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 😁 thank YOU!!
Can this be done without a walking foot? I'm having an AWFUL time finding one for my machine, for some reason. I really, really want to try making one of these, but I might have to wait until I can find a walking foot.
I made lots of denim quilts years ago before I had a walking foot. The challenge you'll face without using a walking foot is keeping your fabrics even when you're sewing your seams. What happens is that top fabric may be pulled under the needle slower than the bottom fabric is moving. This causes you to have uneven edges at the end of a seam. Short distances won't be a big problem, so make your strips first. When you begin sewing your strips together, pin them and keep the fabrics together as best you can. Another idea is to start your seam in the middle and sew to one edge. Then turn it around and sew from the middle again to the opposite side. This will at least keep your rows centered and may eliminate most of the problem. Give it a try on a couple small pieces and see how it goes. Just take it slow and then trim off any excess as needed. You should be able to do it and get very good results! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
@@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise thanks for these ideas! It's worth a try, even without a walking foot.
I have old jeans and flannel shirts
A perfect combination for a beautiful quilt, Dora! Have fun with your new quilt. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I need to find some flannel shirts. Have plenty of denims.
Hit the thrift stores, Deine! That's where most of mine came from. Also be sure to select the largest sizes to get more fabric! This is a fun quilt to make. Thanks for watching. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Your scissors work well. What brand n were did you purchase them.
Good questions, Betty. If you're asking about the rag quilt snippers, those are from Amazon at
amzn.to/3EZqMCz
These have been the best clippers to use for rag quilts. The scissors I use are Ginger's which you can also get on Amazon at amzn.to/3AUM4R1
Sometimes I can get scissors at large fabric stores and some quilt shops but the selection may be limited. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
What are the scissors you are clipping with? Are they pruning scissors?
Those are a hand-saver, Reneta! They are called Rag Quilt Snippers and there's a link in the description. I received them as a gift and love them! They make clipping rag quilts to much easier. If you do a lot of rag quilting, I'd recommend a pair. Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
To much talking !! 🙉🙉
This is one of my first video tutorials, EB, and I did talk a lot! I'm getting better about staying on point, though I need to see about editing some of the older ones! Thanks for watching. 😊 Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I like the talking videos unless it's not English or the volume is too low for my hearing problems or background music is too loud. I hate it when there's only annoying music, but luckily we have the handy mute button. If I get too impatient, I can speed up the video by fast forwarding, or stop the video. Talk away Lea Louise! I always learn something new or entertaining while eating or drinking or writing. It's a pleasure to listen to you. I share your love of beautiful fabrics and good ideas. You talk a bit longer because you are enthusiastic about your quilting. It's a balancing act to weigh the amount of talking to satisfy the majority of your listeners. Not everyone will be happy, no matter what you do!
I worked part time at a quilt store, measuring and cutting fabric. One time, as I was leaving the store after a shopping trip, another customer grumbled to me that she was very displeased with one of the employees because she didn't smile at her. Duh! Maybe her back was aching and her feet were killing her from standing all day!
UA-cam is such a wealth of information--some bad, some ugly, some good and helpful. It's like having a giant library on demand. If I have a plumbing problem or broken appliance or gadget that needs repairing, I go to UA-cam first. Find the best prices. Get legal and health advice. The resource list is long. Anyone can give the advice, so you have to decide to heed it or recognize you're listening to a fool.
I don't have to worry about my below average spelling when posting. Spell check comes to the rescue, except when even spell check can't decipher what word I butchered. Another plus of UA-cam is the fact that I don't have to do the work of reading a lot of text--like this long epistle. If I make a mistake or write something bad, I get to either delete or edit it. Nice.
