Here is a great way to use up those old jeans. I used 7 pairs of old jeans and some flannel. I used Premo Soft thread, you can get it here www.glidethread... or www.just-thread...
I lost my daughter last year. She left three young children. I’m making this quilt for her 15 year old son out of her jeans. I’m going to put a picture of the two of them together on one of the squares. I’ll also use some of the back pockets for a square and a pair of bright green jeans she had for the 5” squares. I’ve had several boxes of her clothes for this last year and only now can bear to handle them. This has been very therapeutic for me. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea!
I too, lost my dear heart 3 months ago. I cut up two of his large, soft, flannel robes for the backing and was planning on sweatshirts for the front of my memory quilt. But I was stuck in my mind due to not enough sweatshirts and too manty t-shirts. Plus - I LOVE to use old denim and he has many jeans still in his side of the closet. So Laura - thank you, so Love the ragged look anyway. You have shown me how to incorporate the sweatshirt and t-shirt pieces onto the denim and then backing with the robe fabric. PERFECT! Thank you so much. And - your quilt is just lovely Laura! As for the gals below in the same situation...it takes time. I have the 'wisdom' prayer on my wall; I say it every nite; "God grant me the serenity to accept....the courage to change...the wisdom to know the difference". Maybe that will sink into my subconscious and guide me thru my new - very 'different' life now...with all its echoes and sometimes ghostly shadows. Hugs to you all. Danielle Simone
Laura, I have never been a quilter, but the way you explain/teach is so easy to understand, I am thinking of trying at my age (71). If nothing else, your instruction is so easy to understand, I love watching and will continue. If I do try quilting, I may try a small lap quilt first.
Wow! This is perfect way to use all my thrift store old jeans and my bounty of fun flannel and equally fun cotton quilting fabrics! This will be a fun easy sewing project to do with my grandchildren. I really like the size of the finished quilt. I especially the suggesting for threading the serger I going to use her recommended colors for surging the blocks together. I'm thinking of using a raw edge denim binding to complete the warn look. I can't hardly wait to get this going! Thanks again for your awesome tutorials!
You have caused me to collect jeans until I have enough for a good size quilt to make for my grandson. I want it to be the same great bed quilt for a little boy to be a great lap quilt for a man when he grows up. I could hug you!!
Sadiejosiemom...Thinking of you, your family and your husband...Sin- cerest of sympathies...to you all...so, so sorry for your tremendous loss...Love being sent your way...... I am doing the same ... with my Dad's apparel...including fabrics depicting his hobbies and interests...mixed in ... fishing...cars...carpentry...etc...flannels and plaids....you are doing the perfect tribute to your hubby and for your children to have a meaningful keepsake ...that will be treasured..forever...keeping you comforted all the while...with his things and memories...Good going...!!!! This will be a project that will keep you close to him and sooth your heart ... very rewarding ... Enjoy every moment...!
I made a regular style of jeans quilt for my son. He LOVED it and asked me when I would make him another one. I have been trying to think of a way to make a different type of pattern for another jeans quilt for him. You must have been reading my mind. Every thing about this quilt is wonderful. Thank you so much Laura for sharing it with us.
Thanks so much for making this quilt. It has really inspired me to make a memory quilt. I lost my husband in December and though I've given my sons some of his jeans - I still have a lot and lots of shirts (including Hawaiian), flannel pj bottoms and tshirts. It's been very difficult to want to let go of those things and to be honest, my house looks pretty much like it was when he passed - but I'm starting to go through it. (I'm not wishing to illicit any sympathy here - so please don't - I'm doing ok). Mine won't be as uniform as yours but I think it will be a way to keep his memory alive!
sadiejosiemom im so sorry for your loss, just think when you cuddle in it for warmth it will be like he's hugging you and giving you comfort. May God grant you peace take care.
sadiejosiemom I'm in the same situation. I only recently found a lot of his jeans. All of his shirts that were hanging up in the basement were thrown away when my basement was cleaned for me. It tore me up but since I found the jeans I wanted to do something special with them.
As a quilter who is also an environmentalist, I am often distressed to see the waste of fabric in so many tutorials (thank you, fabric industry... clothing is just behind fossil fuels in resource use), so I am thrilled at this use of old jeans. Thank you for a great idea!
I started a denim quilt for my adult son- following a Bonnie Hunter pattern, but Im only half way through it with QSYG. So, I'm glad you did this video Laura, thanks it will help me with a couple of ideas in it. I also chose flannel for the back and yours looks great, I love it . Thanks for your work. Marietta Brisbane, Australia
I love it! I would never have thought to serge the edges, usually when the seams are left on the front it's so they can fray. These won't fray, but using the serger sure would make it easier to assemble this! Thanks heaps for the great idea.
I have made a couple of jean quilts and this is another one I'll be trying! I even put in the squares that have stains like oil in the quilt as it tells the story of well worn, loved jeans!
I think you are a born instructor! Your so organized with your lessons and soo easy too follow. Whenever I start a knew project, I always check to see if you made a video on it because you will usually mention something that I would have never thought of . I guess you can tell , I love your videos! Thanks for Sharing
I never would have thought to cut up jeans. Thanks for the tutorial. I love watching you. You talk us through at a pace and language I understand. Thanks. Diolch 😄
Love this tutorial. I wanted verity on back, so I went to goodwill and got old flannel pajama pants. Thought about using bandana material instead of charm squares but decided to use my scraps instead. Also made mine twin size. Reminds me of the one my grandma made.
I need to make five blue jean quilts. I love the softness of jeans and flannel. I’m making two already. I think I’ll try this on one of them ty so much❤️
Good idea for a bed quilt especially for young lad. I've made a few very similar for picnic blankets which are also great and the benefit is that the extra stain here and there just blend in and make for a very authentic look.
If you want to use this for a picnic quilt, I would recommend NOT using flannel on the backing. Grass and debris really sticks to it. I thought of that half way thru the finished quilt, but I DO love it.
Hola Querida Laura 🙋 Está hermoso, me gusta mucho como quedó, además porque así reciclamos esa ropa vieja y olvidada.Gracias por compartir. Abrazo y saludos desde Argentina.
I assume the width of the 2.5 yards of denim is about 60in. And the flannel would need to be an equivalent amount even though it usually comes in 45in width.
This is a great video! You have done a wonderful job with explaining it step by step! I would like to make it to fit a full size bed and I am wondering if adding more rows ( maybe go until I have 11 squares across) will give me a size that would fit a bed. Have you figured out the math for that? Thank you for the very clear instructions.
I have not figured out the math for that but you are definitely on the right track. Each side just needs to be equal and then your center row will put it together
I’ve never quilted but believe I can do this one. Great presentation. Only problem is, I’ve got to make it longer or else hubby’s toes will be sticking out - lol. Still believe I can do that too since it’s just squares and triangles. Great job!!

@Betty Pellissier I live in Connecticut. My grandfather had 6 brothers. I don't know if any of them had families. Pellissier is not a common name. There is a family in Monson Mass. I don't know them though.
@Betty Pellissier My father's dad came down from Canada. Late 1800's early 1900's he came to the States. My dad was born in the US in 1913. But my ancestors had to come from France at some point. :)
This is a fun idea for a gift. :) Thanks for the very simple instructions and the great visual tips (as always). Curious about who was holding the quilt at the end. I kind of got the giggles waiting to see if they were going to pop out from behind. LOL :D TFS! xoxoJanet
:D Next time ask him to pop out and say Hi! to everyone. :D My husband has watched yours on his youtube channel. Great fishing tips. :) Glad he was around to help with your video. :) Hugs!
Thank you for this quilt idea. Your instruction is so easy to understand. I’m a visual learner and the paper quilt layout used to demo the stitching order was inspired. What did you use for binding? Did you make your own bias binding? Again, thank you for your clear and simple instructions. I watch your channel a lot.
I am programmed to save jeans , shirts , buttons and zippers with the intent of recycling. I also like to recycle YARN when possible. I can't wait to make some quilts with my stash, thank you for your inspiration and some new ideas.
I watched this video you posted on making a jeans quilt. It is really pretty. You say you have 41 8 inch squares and 4 7 inch square cut in half for triangles at corners, 16 9 inch squares cut in half, flannel on the back and 41 5 inch squares of a swatch of cloth in the center of each block of the jeans. you said it will make a 53 inch square. I wanted to make this but I am making a quilt for a king size bed which is a lot larger. I know the dimensions will need to be different. Can you please help me and let me know what size triangles, squares and center cloth. I am curious, will I need larger squares and triangles or more rows with extra blocks. Please help. Thanks so much.
I love your tip about the triangular cardboard template so the smaller pieces can be used. Did you zig-zag all your seams and if you did were the flannel pieces still together like they were when you sewed the seam? Was this only just to prevent the seams from raveling?
Yes, the denim and the flannel was zig-zag together for a few reasons, it will help with the raveling, it keeps the fabric together as I was sewing, it made it easy to handle, and I liked the look :)
Thanks Laura, great idea, I think I will do mine with all the top seams raggy, I just came across a charm pack in my stash the same as yours.. my next project right there.. thanks again for your very doable tutorials.... Jules from Oz 🌻✂️✂️
I’m making four of these quilts for a family using a family members clothes that had passed away. I have a serger but I’m very new to using a serger. What stitch did you use here?
stay with the 10" sq and then increase the number of squares on each side. As you sew the blocks together you will end up with 2 sides that look like two big triangles. see the time at 9:26 you have made 4 rows, this is where you will need to add more rows

I have to agree ! Diolch yn fawr Gaynor.

thank you
Thanks for demystifying on point quilts. I also love the denim quilt.
I really like this project. i have been collecting my son's jeans for years for a quilt project. They would be great for this. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this inspirational idea. I have my uncles old jeans to make this comfort for my aunt and finally a pattern to love!!!!
Oh nicely done! I love that you took the time to make the mini piece to demonstrate how the blocks go together - really helpful, thank you 😀
Glad you liked it :)

How can i say this.... You are always awesome! I wanted to make a new quilt. Yet again you dazzle me. Thank you, Lady Laura!💜👍💫
You did an awesome job! love how you explained everything so clearly.
I was looking for a quilt pattern for my teenage grandson this is just perfect thank you Xx
If you want to use this for a picnic quilt, I would recommend NOT using flannel on the backing. Grass and debris really sticks to it. I thought of that half way thru the finished quilt, but I DO love it.
This is an awesome idea! And it comes together quickly! I am working on this while I wait for my supplies to come for another quilt I am working on.
That is so original and turned out amazing!
AHHH! THIS takes my breath away. I don't quilt. But THIS I CAN DO!!!!!!!!!!!
Very pretty! I love denim and this is a great way to use old jeans. Thanks, Laura. Pam in Alabama
Love the idea of the jean quilt! Thanks for sharing.
WOW! thanks! great project for my first quilt and all the jeans I've been saving!
Amazing! You are so smart! Love your projects
Thanks for that! I adjusted then pattern to fit a double bed and only used scraps. Finished product weighs a ton!
I'm sewing mine now and having sew much fun with it. I dont think this will be my last one.
I love to sew with jeans, too. I like your version of a jean patch quilt. I'm ready to try this! Thank You
This was so well explained ,love the patchwork blanket
This is amazing! Beautiful too. Thank you! 😊

It's a lovely quilt. Great idea. Thank you 😊
Great quilt, and great demonstration as always!
I love this! You've successfully managed to merge cute and masculine qualities into one quilt.
I will definitely be making one of these for myself 😁
i love how you explain each step
Thank you :)
That's really beautiful project.thanks for sharing
I love the pattern but I think I'll just sew the seams and let them fray like the patches. Great tutorial. Everything was crystal clear! xoxo ⛅🌵
love the idea, please if you do send me a picture :)

What an easy and great quilt!...I made mine an “I Spy” 😀 quilt.
Love this the seams could also be do rag style as well
Such a great tutorial. Thank you So much.
awesome !! does it matter if the denim is stretchy or not ?
Some of the jeans were stretchy, and it was fine :) thanks for asking
Just great how she is explaining!

can I expand the triangles so the quilt to be a queen size?
Excellent! Thank you very much. Great idea!
Oh wow, this one is amazing 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Love it ! I plan to make one.
What would the size be for the finished quilt please? I want to try it. Thanks
Just wondering when done what size is it? I wanted to do this in a queen size
I love this quilt ❤️ how big is the entire quilt when done ? Like more a queen size blanket or like a twin ?
it is a lap quilt

Why is there no stuffing in the quilt?
I’m making four of these quilts for a family using a family members clothes that had passed away. I have a serger but I’m very new to using a serger. What stitch did you use here?
Hello, Love this Denim Quilt 😁 💙 Erica x
Wonderful quilt fora camper
I love this! Thank you!!
I totally love this quilt. I need more time so I can make one. Lol...
Was someone holding that quilt at the end? 😄
I love this quilt. Can you use stretch denim too or just the non stretchy type? Tyfs
You can, but just keep that in mind as you are sewing :)
i WOULD LIKE A LARGER SIZE QUILT. SHOULD I INCREASED TO 10" SQUARES OR STAY WITH 8" SQUARES BUT INCREASE CENTER TO 11, THEN 9,7,5,3,1 WITH TRIANGLES?
stay with the 10" sq and then increase the number of squares on each side. As you sew the blocks together you will end up with 2 sides that look like two big triangles. see the time at 9:26 you have made 4 rows, this is where you will need to add more rows
What size would you increase the triangles for a 10 inch square?
Love this, turned out so beautiful
This is awesome!
MARAVILHOSO!!!
I have polyester plaid fleece that I might use for the flannel, would that work or is it too stretchy? Thanks. and I enjoy your tutorials.
it should be OK

Sorry yes I just didn't remember the measurements as I was speaking to you. You basically are just More blocks and more rows
Love it !!😊
What brand of serger thread do you use?
What was the seam allowance measurement? Great tutorial
You can use whatever you like. My serger was set for about 1/2". Just keep the same seam allowance throughout
SewVeryEasy thanks so much
I love this
