This was not even a skit it was a slice of life somehow transported to a set.
"How do you cook your cheeseburgers?"
"GOOD."
DAMN STRAIGHT 😂 Malaka
Malaka! HAHAHA
I am more impressed by the burgers actually cooking on the grill than anything else in these skits and they are all just great. Now I want a cheeseburger.
And Ackroyd really looks like he knows his burgers. I mean, cheeborgers.
Dan was a diner cook once...he really is cooking those cheeseburgers.
One cheeseburger
Cheeseborger 🍔, Cheeseborger, cheeseborger. No fries, cheeeps no Coke, Pepsi!! 🙃🙂🤣
Right?
To this day I still occasionally say "cheezbugger, cheezebugger, cheezebugger" and "no coke , Pepsi" to make myself laugh.
Yeah - me too! And people just shake their heads when I do it. Ya just gotta appreciate the craft. :-)
Why is that so funny? I know humor cannot really be explained but this skit is kind of lame. Just because its EARL SNL doesn't mean it's hysterical.
@@gargantuaism you have to have lived in new york city at the time to get this skit really. These were greek diner/grill places that made a great burger but the menu was certainly limited lol
Except this skit is based on a Chicago restaurant.
This is why every single person who says, “ SNL hasn’t been funny since X.” is just old.
Great if you find this funny, but please don’t act like this was some legendary comedy. It’s a one-note sketch and if you weren’t alive or watching when it aired, it’s not funny at all. Your memories and nostalgia make it funny for you. It’s objectively bad, subjectively funny.
@@pistalo4911 The shared values of comedy good.
Professional. Well-rehearsed. Taking the craft seriously and us reaping the benefits! Frying the burgers was a master touch!
In these skits, Dan Aykroyd was really making real cheese burgers!
Yeah, that’s a neat detail.
I’ll take one with extra cigarette ash, please.
well its not that hard to making a burger.. we all do knew how to cook a burger
@@ewanthug91 it's just so crazy that they'd set up a real grill for a sketch!!
@@MrWolfTickets need to be real man! thats 80's! its more than real than 2021 nowadays hahah
When I was a line cook, we did this sketch to break up the stress.
Same here!
Good for you
First job was working at McDonald's... I'll never do it again... the managers were assholes!
I used to do Andrew "Dice" Clay bits to get everyone laughing on busy stressful nights...
We did the same thing.
If you watch Belushi very very closely, his performance was PERFECT in this particular sketch.Flawless!!!
You can also see the cocaine in his nose
Are you Greek?--they're supposed to be Greek, and being that myself, I'm not saying it wasn't brilliant (though try that with another ethnic minority...good luck). I loved the sketch, by the way....
If only it was funny
@@lenoble8 Sorry, no left wing political propaganda here. This was pre-1908.
John Belushi was an ethnic Albanian who I'm sure had some Greek DNA!
CHIZZBURRRGEEE
-Dan Aykroyd, 1978
This was when Saturday Night Live was willing to shell out for real hamburger patties and grill.
This was when beef was affordable.
I saw these skits when they first were on. I feel old!
NHMO OYTIS
I was in my early twenties. We ARE old.
:-(
Grigori Rasputin I’m old chronologically but inside still 30, and healthy as a horse!
@@nhmooytis7058 Not old, classic. I remember when watch SNL was an event.
Wes McGee back then Monday mornings everyone was talking about SNL! The first Not Ready For Primetime Players went from being nobody to breakout stars.
@@nhmooytis7058 I still to this day remember some new guy named Bill Murray going on camera and joking about how he was worried he was not going to make it on SNL because he was the guy who replaced Chevy Chase.
Actually Dan’s accent is pure Russian pronunciation of cheeseburger
Quite close, not a 100% though.
@@user-yl8wg6qt7g конечно!Он же уже прожил какое-то время в NY
What a show! Back in the day, they weren't afraid to try something new and actually went to the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago to write down the exact words that were spoken during a visit. Sometimes it hit and sometimes it missed. But to this day, we still have occasional people spouting "cheeburger, cheeburger, cheeburger", "no fry, cheeps" and "no Coke, Pepsi".
Candygram! Candygram, Ma'am!
Haha burger was ready by the time we were done paying
Yes, The Billy Goat Tavern. There is now a chain here in the south called "Cheeburger Cheeburger"
"Candygram for Mongo!"
Wait, Olympia diner is based on Billy Goat Tavern? I figured it was based off some diner in Astoria, Queens because a lot of Greek restaurants are there. When I visited Chicago I stopped in the Billy Goat I ordered a bottle of Old Style and... a fucking cheeseburger.
@@Slig1977 It was based off Billy Goat. have to remember Murray and Belushi were Chicago area natives and other SNL cast members had been through for 2nd City.
I'm 100% Greek & I loved that one!
How young they all look
I Remember watching this in high school...where does the time go
Yep, and we no longer have John Belushi, Gilda Radner or Buck Henry. All three were amazing comedic talents.
Thank goodness we all had the opportunity to experience “the good old days.” 😃.
I love the plot of this skit, just a slice of life. Comedy had reached its zenith.
As for this episode, the musical guests were The Rolling Stones
Belushi is the best. No one has & will never have a number one album, movie, and television show simultaneously.
You just can't beat a classic!!
Rest in peace, Buck. Thanks for the laughs.
'Are you here, for an affair, sir'?
And RIP John and Gilda
Bill Murray steals the show is that one immigrant that is just totally clueless but acts like he knows exactly what's going on.
right down to the Head nods
We still have a few of these in detroit that still look exactly like this.. lol.
What a timeless classic snl sketch.
RIP John. 🙏
RIP Buck Henry
And RIP John Belushi
And gilda 3 of my favorites
When I worked at the fast food restaurants in the 80's all we said was "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Pepsi. We had to laugh sometimes. When you're a teenager... you had to break it up or you would break
One of the best recurring skits. Evergreen.
It really makes you laugh out loud when they yell "Cheeseburger?"
@@gargantuaism If you haven't eaten in a Greek-owned diner in Chicago or NYC or Detroit on the regular, you won't get the humor.
Now go eat your Beyond Burger.
The funny thing is , Aykroyd is really cooking burgers.
The real restaurant on which this skit was based serves COKE NO PEPSI!
So I'm from Detroit which has a VERY prominent staple of Greek-run/founded restaurants known as Coney Islands. They're a place that serve breakfast foods, diner food, and the famous Coney Dog - a hot dog with chili, mustard and onion on it. Today I sat down at one of the two places that claim to be "the original" (and they're next door to each other by the way). It was exactly like this place - older Greek man loudly yelling out orders to cooks ("TWO ON ONE, I NEED FRY") while casually going back to talking to patrons before loudly belittling employees over things ("MAKE MORE FRY WE HAVE CUSTOMER"). Kept thinking of this the whole time I was there.
ACTUALLY THE GREEK DINERS ARE THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN TOWN!
A popular place in Fayetteville, NC is LUIGI'S. Great food and pizza. The name is Italian but the owners are Greek.
:)
@@johndates9827 GREEKS ARE THE BEST COOKS ON THE PLANET.
@Tom Thumb STOP LYING
@Tom Thumb REAL CHINESE PASTRY TASTES LIKE HEATING OIL.
The Greek diners in Chicago were famous for the Francheesie. A foot-long hot dog sliced in half lengthwise, stuffed with American cheese, grilled, and wrapped in bacon.
This is still a New York thing. I go to a great pizza joint run by Middle-Easterners with thick accents. It's just like this. I always order two cheese slices and a large Pepsi (they only serve Coke) so I can hear the guy yell out, "Chiz slice! Chiz slice! Two chiz! No Pepsi! Coke!" It never fails to make me smile.
Very fond memories, thank you to the OG cast!
I taught my nephew to do this when he was about two years old. He mastered it very well.
That’s freaking great!😊
snl at it's best
The amount of talent on this set....amazing.....plus comedy without celebrity mockery and overdone boring news report.
It’s pretty awesome SNL 1975-1980
"No coke, Pepsi"
Classic!
That line really does it for you? That is what you call classic? "No Coke, Pepsi?"
What exactly is "classic" about that? You really laugh hysterically when they say that?
Olympia Grill is one of the best sketches ever.
R.I.P. Mr. Henry
Cheeseburgers, chips, and Pepsi. That’s my kind of restaurant.
Best food in world. Come on come on, place order, what you want. Very busy now.
4:50 Funniest moment in snl history. Also poor bill murray being hurt by john belushi.
Back in the 1970's in California L.A. area had alot of burger stands. I didn't have a car so I had to go to the closest one. The burger was pretty good, but I decided to take everything off the burger and taste the beef. Didn't taste to good so I never went back. Then I found a bar that had great food cheap. Another story from the sidewalks of life.
Actually cooking cheese burgers.
One of my favorite recurring sketches on "SNL".
There’s so many for me: the killer bees, Belushi’s samurai adventures, the snake worshippers..,
I remember seeing this sketch when it first aired. It wasn't funny. But it was weird. Didn't quite know what tp make of it. It does grow on you.
This was best days of my childhood.
Legends.
Can you just imagine these guys cranking out cheeseburgers like this for the past 50 years ?
Lol.. how do u cook your burgers?.. .. Good!
This past Sunday was National Cheeseburger Day and I went to Carl's Jr and had a Big Carl(copy of the Big Mac),which had cheese on it.Delicious!
The sets are really good. They did a great job.
.....back in the days before everything went PC..... you just have to love it !
The #1 SNL skit of all time. Great stuff.
Try to explain your love of this skit. There isn't even one particularly funny moment in the entire thing. "Cheeseburger cheeseburger??" THAT makes you laugh?
This is the most realistic sketch ever done on any show. These Greek short order joints were in every Big City around. And if you look akroid is actually making Burgers they're really frying on the grill
tolfan they had to lobby Lorne Michaels to get the working grill. Was the most expensive set of the era...
*Aykroyd
"I gotta have turn-over" 🤣
RIP Buck
I’d like to see a comedy version of this
So what? Who cares how long ago you saw these?
These are timeless sketches by great artists. Comedic renaissance.
Now, I'm seeing a connection w/ Steve Martin's "I would like to buy a hamburger" as Inspector Clouseau (Pink Panther).
Try seeing one of the REAL Pink Panther movies, the ones starring Peter Sellers.
In the mid 1970's, there was a greasy spoon breakfast and lunch diner off of Kenmore Square in Boston. We heard way back then that it was the inspiration for the Olympia. I can still smell the seared grease from the cheeborgies.
Are you talking about Charlie’s cafeteria?
One of my favorite episodes from SNL!
This was when saturday nite live was actually funny.
That was a long time ago
Your absolutely right!
This was also the time when they actually did their lines without cue cards.
Stuart Wood to think they could remember “cheeseburger, Pepsi, coke” and repeat it 109 times over the course of the skit, is a true testement to the times.
@@nobodyreally6345 Late 70's.
Thank you for all your great moments on film Mr. Buck Henry on Saturday Night Live.
No coke, petsi ..... this skit is hilarious. ! !
I used to have to find this Sketch on some Dark website a few years ago, I'm glad it's on UA-cam now
My God! I remember when this sketch first aired. I’m old.
Buck Henry dies in LA January 8, 2020. He was 89.
:'(
a giant behind the scenes, a monster of a script writer. I grew up on Get Smart and who knows how many of his other shows.
I was surprised. I thought he was only in his early 70's.
@@theoriginalchefboyoboy6025 I thought I recognized the name. Lord knows how many times I read it watching the intro to Get Smart.
He was great
Ive been reading the first 10 years of snl, it's great seeing the letters of the book coming to life.
Pure Gold
Saw this and just laughed. Thanks S.N.L. 😂
Spiro Agnew's photo on the wall, hahaha
They actually cooked
So so so funny
I wish we could have this back for even a short time
John was a fool to have everything and throw it away
Cheeseborger 🍔, Cheeseborger,🍔 Cheeseborger.🍔 No fries,🍟cheeeps no Coke, Pepsi!! 🥤🙃🙂🤣🤠
Gotta love The Billy Goat Tavern
Soooooooooo good. Thx.
There was a Greek Diner in Mineola Long Island that was the living incarnation. Every time I waited on line to order I would pucker up.
No refill, gotta have turnover!
Gus was the owner of that 24 hour diner!!!
Billy Goat Tavern...
This reminds me of the restaurant called Karma there's no menu they just give you what you deserve....Cheeseburger Cheesebuger Cheeseburger...
RIP Buck Henry ❤️☮️❤️
Astoria Queens when I was a teenager. 😆
Some fab food there
@@doricetimko5403 Yes there was. Loved it.
I've actually heard that "cheeburger" line at a local restaurant, and it was legit, not a reference to this skit. I laughed, they didn't get it.
Rest in peace John Belushi
Still FUNNY.... and people still YELL this. It is Classic.
I was impressed they had a real grill in the studio lol
Here would have been a good reason for why they only served cheeseburgers, chips, and Pepsi: A food vendor calls to ask what type of food they need, and Niko (Bill Murray) answers the phone and all he can say is "cheeseburger," so that's what they got. Which would explain Pete's (John Belushi) reason for saying "Got to make turnover," they have so many cheeseburgers to sell before they spoil.
I plan to return to Greece one day said every Greek short-order cook in the 70s & 80s.
It’s still my kind of restaurant
When I used to Work for Woolworths We had that type of Counter Place to eat ! And I noticed that People enjoyed Cheeseburger & Fries ! Back When I was a Young man early 80s #SNL
No Fries, Cheeps!
I LOVED the Woolworth's lunch counter! Nothing better!
This is a classic
Suddenly I have a craving for a CHEESEBURGER 🍔😂😂😂😂👍🏻
I remember places like this all over Chicago area. Not too many left, if at all.
Just looked at the Billy Goat Tavern menu and they do have cheese burger among other things the cheese burger is their most popular item but not their only item and they do have fries
Classic
Poor Jane Curtain was so brave to eat that🐶🐕 hamburger 🍔 with cheese? 🤣 Hats 🎩 off to you Jane.
No Coke...PEPSI!!! 😝
"Refill please!"
Me a non-American: "Excuse me?"
you can SMELL the burger cooking in this sketch
When they could cook real food on set.
I was wondering who got to eat all that food after the sketch was done.
The cast did. If you look at the first couple of seasons, there was often a food sketch. They would do it right before commercial and have a quick dinner.
Blew my mind
Attend a Canadian social club 'round the world; sooner than later, hear, then be offered 'cheese burger'. Thanks, probably to SNL '78.
It just don,t get any better then these guys and gals
