I remember feeling stupid doing the whole breathing thing when I first started boxing, but he's right, within a few minutes you'll realise it's something everybody does that's completely normal. I guess it just feels wrong to begin with. Boxing taught me so much more than just how to fight I'd be lost without this sport
Out of all the boxing videos I've seen, this is the only one that covers breathing and how it plays an important role in boxing when executed properly.
My first time hitting a heavy bag, I actually let it all out. The other people were staring at me looking weird cuz I was the only guy breathing, making noise, but the coach seem to not mind. I expected the coach to come to me and ask to tone it down, but now I understood why he didn't cuz he know I was doing the right thing.
I love boxing and honestly I feel like this is one of the few if not only pages that gives concise information but still understandable. Or at least for me. Keep it up !
Thanks so much Anthony for explaining this as clear as possible. Before this video I used to think that the sound was coming from the boxer's gloves but now it makes a lot more sense where it comes from. Again, thank you for explaining 😀👍
Hard breathing creates intra-abdominal pressure, not only firming up the body against strikes but establishing that kinetic chain, letting power transfer from legs to upper body.
I understand perfectly when to exhale as it stiffens your entire body and gives extra protection when going in. What I do struggle with is to pinpoint when it is safe to inhale exactly, especially when going for longer combinations. It's much tougher to get hit when inhaling, of course especially when taking body shots. But also when getting hit to the face it can disturb yor inhaling process when suddenly you have a glove on your mouth while trying to get some air in. Any (conceptual) ideas? - I have never seen any boxing coach cover this explicitly....
Personally I just exhale when I punch, block, slip, step, etc and the inhale comes naturally, I never worry about inhaling it's seems to just be automatic. I just make sure I exhale when I do anything. That's what works for me. Hope that helps
Your content has always been great and easy to follow. I usually ignore your request to like a video (just a bad habit/I am already subscribed), but I had to hit the like as soon as I seen Craig pop up. 😂
when I first started going to a boxing gym I would hear guys ‘let it out’. I would always try to be quite cause I didn’t wanna be that guy.. now I be lettin everything out 😂
great video coach🥊🥊 i have an amazing breathing realization to share during live or something then you can make breathing 2.0 video if you come to same conclusion 💪🏽
daft question couch as im so new , i get it to let it out with every punch but when do you breath in ? so if you do a 1,2 cross do you breath out 3 times then breath in to catch your breath or just a jab . you breath out shhh then breath in ect ,, thank you for your support
For me, it’s like the same as grunting while lifting heavy weight. It helps exert more energy imo. Obviously when you hold your breath or get punched while your chest is filled you’re gonna get gassed.
I remember watching that press conference. Chad was talking stupid he didn’t know he was talking to a real coach that would of knocked him the hell out coach Ant is the truth 💯
What is the focus in most boxing gyms? Work hard and do your best. What wins fights? Works smart and be your best. The difference is in developing the fighter in the man and not the beast into the man. Considering how sensitive the nose is to a jab, the right side to a hook (liver), and the jaw to an upper cut, speed and techniques save the day, not brute force approach.
Are we breathing out with every single punch? Even in combinations? Just curious. Also, could the breath be a give away of a punch? Almost like telegraphing your punches?
Can u go over breathing during long combos? Obviously u cant exhale during all of the punches. Exhaling too often in a short period imo is similar to holding your breath and the body wont get enough oxygen, so i wanted your opinion on the matter
i keep finding videos on the how and why to exhale... what i need, though, is a follow-up on when to inhale, because either i'm tiring out way too quickly if i'm inhaling after a combo, or hyperventilating and getting dizzy if it's after each punch, and i've yet to find that happy middle ground.
something i learned is after exhaling through the mouth, i do a fast double nose inhale and make sure i'm using my diaphragm to inhale. if you practice this enough you'll get so much oxygen on the double inhales that taking another breathe will give you hardly any air. just remembering to feel your inhale in your core using the diaphragm and not in your nostrils. when you get tired it's easy to autopilot and just breathe however you can... that's why we train.... so we can prepare the body and the mind to respond the optimal way.
@@scottstone1475 I only use it when I'm gassed for the most part, when my breathing feels labored and I'm gasping for air so i do 2 fast inhales through my nose quickly using my diaphragm within 1 second. 1,2 then exhale though the mouth 1.2 exhale... I have asthma and tend to hyperventilate and struggle to keep my breathing under control, so 2 quick inhales keeps my breathing in rhythm
So coach the noise that strikers make that sss sss noise fightips on youtibe said its cause foghters keep their tongue on the top of there mouth sp whem exhaling the release less air
That moment when you realize that all that pain you go through running, bike of sorrow, burpees, to improve your cardio, is a complete waste of time if you don't breathe
I don't get it ,how about when you let the air out your mouth and at the same time you get punched in the mouth, your breathing out with your mouth open won't that get you hurt more in your mouth the lips cause your jaw is open ? Help
How am I suppose to breath out my mouth with my mouth piece in? It’s hard I been breathing out through my nose. I notice when I’m sparring breathing out my mouth my sparring partner will try to connect with my jaw because he sees my mouthpiece open.
Precision striking said you exhale with punches but he said you expand your body while exhaling which makes no sense because your stomach usually goes in words and when you inhale you bloat I don't know what he's talking about and also disabled comments
There are two ways to train martial arts: one is based on committing tips and tricks to memory (conditional, if-then) and the other on converting sound principles into our reflexes (neural, threshold). The first is conceptually built in the 5% of our brain that is cognition (memory), the other is developed in the 95% of the brain that allowed us to survive and evolve. I will let you decide which one will get your ass kicked.
For me it seems more natural to breath in when I throw punches. Trying to breath out when throwing punches is not in sync with how I normally breath. It's like a forced effort breathing out when I throw punches.

I started learning boxing lately and I can see why they call it the sweet science given all the complexities involved
That's why i always suggest to keep the mouthpiece on even while working the heavybag...to me, it's very useful.
Respectfully, thanks.

Awesome video! When I did karate my instructor never taught me how to breath properly when sparring. He never talked about it to anybody.
It’s a lot of coaches online but u the Hottest and most consistent 💪🏾🔥🔥
I appreciate you

I've been waiting for you to go over this topic. So important! It helps me build energy as the workout gets longer. Excellent info as usual!

part of it is automatic inhale as a chest recoil
Personally I just exhale when I punch, block, slip, step, etc and the inhale comes naturally, I never worry about inhaling it's seems to just be automatic. I just make sure I exhale when I do anything. That's what works for me. Hope that helps
My question exactly.
Question. When you exhale during a punch or combo do you automatically inhale just not a deep breath. I find myself holding my breath sometimes
@@kennethduff248 Do oyou inhale with your mouth or only with nose?
The best courses hands down and Im getting more soon..

School em Coach A. Damn you gotta really really nice gym my brother.
funny that you didn't say about increasing punching power when you make short exhales. I think is very important and need to know.
Try inhale and exhale description, Coach Anthony.

What about when throwing a number of punches?
Gonna do this more often I’m more used to breathing through my mouth because of how I was taught boxing/mma
So when to use mouth and nose when punching?

Question for ANYONE.. How do you inhale on a 3 to 5 punch combo. That's 3 to 5 exhales when should you be inhaling after the combo or in between..
I went to a fight and there was a southpaw there. Every time he threw a punch, he was like pah, pah, pah 😂🤣 full-blown sound effects.
🤣

when you inhale, are you suppose to inhale from your nose or mouth? Preffeable?
I breathe when i punch 1.so i can breathe and 2. To Maximize the power and speed in my punch.

Coach, when I threw a hard punch but missed I felt a huge amount of energy leave my body along with the miss.
