Early on in my late start to falling in love with boxing (mid-40s) a trainer told me that "a great jab can take you around the world." It really stuck with me and to this day, 4 years after i started hitting a bag, its still the punch i practice the most.
That’s dope man , you decided to start regardless of your age , 40-50 isn’t even old in my opinion but a lot of people at that age feel like their age will hold them back from trying new things . So big props to you bro I hope you keep boxing/working out till you can’t walk no more 💯💪🏼
Sean O'Grady on USA Boxing used to say that 90% of the power of a punch is in the last 10% of the distance thrown. This is so true of the wrist turn in the jab. You are literally throwing your fist at the target, and the turn of the wrist, thumb up to thumb down accelerates the speed of your fist at the very finish. The power lies in the acceleration. That's the snap. Same as in golf, and in baseball. An accelerating bat or club drives a ball out of the park or 300 yards down the fairway. Hit your target while your fist is accelerating and amazing things will happen.
Most important punch to understand and learn. A solid job will get you out of any sticky situation. This is the best tutorial on of a solid jab on youtube hands down.
The rotating of the fist/arm puts more tension on the various tendons. So THAT is why you can throw your fist at a higher speed, because the tendons will pull it back. Without this extra tension on the tendons you have to slow down and pull back your fist using muscle-power. It's all Science and it's oh so Sweet 😘😘😘
I love getting that chemistry with the people I hold pads for. I might mess up; they might mess up, or I'll say something weird or they'll do something weird, and we just laugh it off and keep it moving. Not too serious, not too silly, just the right balance.
Good advice as always. I've always seen a million different ways to use the jab, and I've always preferred to throw it like a whip, so to speak. So this helps me out a lot
Rotating the fist is exactly the same way when I was on Karate. For the snapping effect we also have to pull the fist at least as fast as we throw it, but preferably even faster.
When stepping in with the jab, I see some people like to turn their lead foot at an angle, I guess for more power. Almost like on a lead hook. You're thought on this coach?
One way visualization helped me get this, I visualized actually bringing my hand back after snapping it. Sounds kinda dumb writing it out, but in my mind the only jab I wanted was the one that finished with my hand back.
My coach always explained to me as when you whip someone with towel, pause 😅 the snaps right on the end, so basically turn over your shots(pouring cup of water) be it a jab or bank hand 👊
Am a European muaythai champion and one of my biggest mistakes is the jab but i see a lot of people say that you need to have your hand out so the hand traveling short distance to be more faster but then i see this video and its little bit different
Great tips. I notice a lot of guys don't turn the thumb down. I rem when I started to really disect technique I found that that's the reason my elbow was hurting. When I extended I was twisting a little late and thumb was parallel to the ground causing my elbow to absorb the whip motion. Turning the thumb down with the elbow slightly up prevents this and adds more snap into the end of the fist which of course is intended to go into the oppenents face instead of your elbow lol. That joint pain is no joke. Just my observation from when I learned how to properly throw a jab. I still like watching the 101's though because you never know what you might find or what you simply been slacking on.
Coach by snap do u mean impulse or impact Force x time= change in momentum/impulse It's actually used to avoid injuries by increasing the time so that less force is transferred. The principle behind airbags in vehicles. So if u reverse it , u decrease the time more force gets transferred to your opponent causing more damage. Yep, I am an engineer started boxing as a hobby in 2020.
it looks like Eddie is also transfering weight from his rear foot to his front foot also, is that part of the "snap" or is it just something you are supposed to do anyhow?
I didn't know i have a strong wrist before i tried boxing but when i did try boxing the coach personal said "your wrist is not something you can get from training so keep it safe"
Great video coach Anthony. Is it always necessary to rotate the fist 180 degrees as in the vidoe when throwing the jab? As I was sort of taught to rotate it just 90 degrees so that the fist is facing palm down on impact. Thanks for any info.
Hold your jab out in 90 degree position, then turn the thumb down and hold to compare. Thumb down your shoulder locks into your chin creating a natural guard and also more stability. Your forearm also rotates, giving you more torque to deliver a stiffer blow. In reality you should train all the angles from thumb turned over, to 90 degrees, to even thumb up. Hope this helps
Coach, curious how people whose finger joints extend past their knuckles when making a fist should throw their punches. I noticed your hand are kind of like that too.
@coachanthony, don’t forget that if you have a speedy fighter in front of you, you don’t wanna rotate it because it takes longer to get to the target. Instead, you want to have your palm downward and shoot it straight so that it can reach the target faster. Watch De La Hoya vs. Mosley 1 and you’ll see Oscar doing this to perfection.

Age is literally just a number. Maybe it sounds cliché or whatever, but at 26 I couldn't walk, at 39, I'm jacked.

I like to visualise an elastic band snapping every time I throw a jab. Visuals go a long way.

Probably for more torque because the hip would also be shooting the jab and its better when its more on the side than the front.
Another good video coach 🙏👊

I’ve been working on snapping the jab. When I do it like this I feel it in my shoulder and it can get sore. Is this normal ?
Depends, how long have u been training for? Boxing requires alot of shoulder endurance
now make it snap without the pad holder moving the pad at all lol
