Cypher was a character that didn't get a lot of attention, but he was extremely important. He KNEW that everything was a simulation, yet he still wanted to be put back in, blissful and unaware. He wanted an easy, comfortable, fake life instead of having to deal with a difficult reality. I think many people in our world have this mindset.

Most underrated lines in the whole movie:
"You think that's air you're breathing now?" - Morpheus can tell Neo doesn't get it
"There is no spoon." - the kid can tell Neo doesn't get it
"Guns. Lots of guns." - Neo, still not getting it
"No." - Neo gets it and deletes Smith
Among the best progressions of "show not tell" I can think of.

While the Matrix may not be an exact equivalent of maya and Keanu Reeve's character Neo may not be a bodhisattava, the Wachowski brothers did deliberately incorporate aspects of Buddhism into their story because they believe that Buddhism has something to say to us about our world and how we conduct our lives.

@@CrayCruz In one of the making ofs, I heard someone (camera man? fx specialist?) say they got inspiration from "Run, Lola run". I was quite surprised since it is a somewhat odd, maybe experimental German film. If you see it.. yes, indeed, it has some scenes that show similar, but much much more rudimentary shots. Like.. if you had folded a paper plan, enjoyed seeing how it flies.. and then you see a real plane or some majestic bird flying.

The concept of the Matrix is based off of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
A few things you might have missed: Morpheus asked Neo “you think that’s air you’re breathing?” Insinuating that he wasn’t, and if he wasn’t there was no need for Cypher to sneeze or cough. It was just to give away their position.
The Oracle told Neo that he was waiting “for another life.” He only became the one after dying.”

I have to say, as deep and confusing as The Matrix can be at times, you hardly missed a thing, you grasped the concept of The Matrix being a simulation that humans are plugged into in those pods, and right away made an inference that Cypher was a bad dude. All of your comments were great. Well done!

What I love about The Matrix is how much there is if you dig deeper into the meaning behind it. For instance, my favorite line is from the Oracle, when after Neo knocks over the vase she told him not to worry about, she says, "What's really going to bake your noodle later on is, would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything?" This does two things. First, it indicates that her prophecies are very much real. Second, it hints at how she likes to operate, subtly twisting the fates of those around her into the optimal position for her desired outcome.

Dark City did it first! Great movie on par with the Matrix in its own way. Sadly it underperformed in box office and Matrix got all the glory (not a bad thing). I find Dark City more subtle about its allusions and themes and works as a noir movie while Matrix scores high with its action, visuals, and Star power. I think both are great

I think the part where the Oracle tells him "not too bright though" when he asks who likes him is one of my favorite moments in the movie. I didn't expect the Oracle to have that kind of sense of humor. The way Gloria Foster says line helps too. She's not mocking him, or sounding disappointed in him. She's just evaluating him, adding that to her list of Neo's skills and stats. Neo apparently didn't put enough points into Intelligence.
