Update : your track doesn't have to be in the scale of the key of your kick. But it's usually better if the key of your kick is part of the scale of your track, altough this is not always 100% true...Trust your ears first, if there is no problem, no problem need to be solved !
I think it's good for the kick to be the root, 3rd, 5th or maybe the 6th degree of the track's scale. I makes sense that the kick being in tune, there stuff will fit better.

I've only been using it 6 weeks and all I can say is that I wish i did it sooner! Sooooo much to learn and yet so fun! Your idea to just use stock plugins is top notch!
I am not sure to understand the thing with suite and wavetable. Live suite is really good, this plus a push 2 and you don't need to buy anything else lol. Thanks, the main reason is too show people that they don't need expensive gear or plugin to make good music.
I find that F# is the best key. I keyed some kick samples and I use a lot of f# and g. So true about kick and bass. People sidechajn all the stime, but I think sometimes if the mix is good, no need to use high ratio or low threshold.
Hi, it doesnt need to be in key. The most important rule is "perfect intervals". So all fourths (5 semitones up or 7 semitones down) or fifths (7 semitones up or 5 semitones down). And this is widely used by producers - more often than to have it in the same key.

It's true for short kick, because you don't rely have "note", but if you kick have a long tail it might be better to check if tuning help. Anyway there is no exact rule, try and see what sounds the best for you
Which Note the Bassline is playing ? It is higher then F#0 ? Maybe F#1, that the Subbass of the Kick don't fight with the bassline and it fits better ? Or is there a Low Cut on the Bassline ?

Rewatching this again. ( love how much I learn each time ..because I understand more each time I watch after practicing and coming back ) and chance we can see a tutorial on how to stop ear fatigue ? I seem to always create the dopest sounding stuff right away. Next I get lost in loop land. I have amazing sounding loops that fall apart in song construction ( making the loop into a whole song.. with automation and build ups etc) the problem isn’t knowing how to make the first 2 sets of 32s as the intro .. the next two sets of 32s as the bassline / drop followed by the next 2 sets of 32s as the breakdown and so on..until the final set of 2 32s as the mixout ( all this varies of course basically ) the problem I have is I get what I would call war fatigue and with all the mixing I try to as I write the track (tweaking eqs , compression etc etc ) that amazing look I thought was beatports next top# 1 hit ( see you next week Ibiza ) turns into something that sounds terrible ( even if it’s not / still basically the same as I started ) and I hate it then I take off headphones and do something else .. I heard mixing with a lower volume helps .. but idk. Maybe I just need to save the file and go eat a sandwich or something . Any info on this Would help . I found a guy named mike Monday who had a UA-cam channel with lots of info on this . Grateful to you both . I thought maybe you could add a little info to this . Thanks again.
Hi, ear fatigue the best thing is to dont listen too loud and make 15min pause every 2h. Just listen loud when you have key decision to make, like kick/bass relation/mix. Other than that I always listen to a "normal level" when I am creating. In mixing and mastering stage is different. The thing you are talking about I think its you get tired of your loop/ sound because you spend a lot of time to listen to the same loop adding variation etc... And what at the beggining was sounding fresh/good to you, sound after few hour working on it like shit. Its just because you've listen so many times this loop that your brain get tired of it and then sounds boring. Its like when you have a new favourite song that you listen to it everyday for a month and then you just get tired of the song and dont listen to it anymore.. But I tend to beleive that if you get tired of your idea quickly that probably means your ideas was actually not that good. That happen to everybody, I've got couple of track finnished but unreleased because when I listen back after two week they just sound shit, that means the original idea was just not good. Or how many times your finish a track thinking its amazing, got to sleep, and the day after just sound crap. Its just really hard to create great tunes, when you see a artist relaesing lets say 10 song a years, he probably has created 50 songs in a years but 40 of the 50 was just crap or not good enough.
I find the same.. I get completely focused on the mixing before just laying out an arrangement and ‘idea’ for the track. Some massive Beatport no.1’s in the past have been mixed terribly but the ideas were amazing (no names!). I’ve now learnt to come up with catchy ideas and have fun, then get an arrangement done, and then start mixing.. Good luck 😉
Oh btw, Tuff London do a course on Fader Pro Online about how to get your Original idea/ Loop into a finished track quickly.. That would help you a lot (it helped me!)
I am gonna check that. Even though I don't really have problem anymore to finish something, most of the time if I cant finish something it's probably because my first idea was crap, and that a very difficult truth to admit sometime but it's like that.
Do you recomment the kick be in the base tone of the key. Like when the song is in Bminor, isnt it the bes to be the kick in B or just any note of the Bminor scale?
depend really they are no "rules" so to speak, but yeah if you can it's the best, but trust your hear this are just guidance to use more like if you feel there is something wrong rather to be applied. Because depend the length of your kick, depend the note of your bassline also... so in a nutshell don't bother too much but if your feel something is off, that might be the problem...
I actually prefer to use a dynamic eq and sidechain it to the kick in order to reduce the frequencies used by the kick JUST when the kick hits. This preserve the sound of the bassline when the kick is not playing.
@@SlavaChrome fabfilter q2 (or q3) or on a budget you can actually do it within ableton, there is a video somewhere on the tube which explain you how to do it but is pretty tricky compared to the q2
Hi Paul, maybe you could do update since video has 3yr? For example relation between kick and bass volume, I've seen people putting bass 3db lower than kick or glueing them together to sound solid.Just an Idea.

There are 4 drums preset (claps, hats, shaker and snare), but I recomend to check my playlist called "drums tutorial" you will find tutorial about that
I love the video as always but i don't understand the part around 2 minutes where you mention +48 pitch up/ transpose.. Are you saying this is a trick to help someone if they don't have a spectrum analyzer? sorry i am confused.. ALSO what are your thoughts on just making kicks with plugins like KICK, KICK 2 or bassism....also can you make the bass with those same plugins on a separate track this way you know 100% what the key is? Yes basically the +48 transpose is another way tio find out the tonality of your kick, it's useful when on the spectrum the kick fundamental shape is wide and then its hard to find out the exact tonality (sometime covering 3 notes on spectrum). By pitching up in octaves, the sound gonna by higher and the shape on the fundamental will be narrow, then it will be easier to find the exact tonality. Yes they are all very good plugin, I will add the punchbox of D16 to the list as well. I would say yes, but I always double check with a sppectrum anyway. Some people can even check this just by ears, but unfortunately I can't lol

Yeah its a good idea to make a video about basseline. About mixing I usually mixe in the same time that I am adding stuff, everytime I add a new element i make sure everything is already perfectly leveled, like if i add a new synth sound i make sure before to add another stuff that this synth sound fit operfectly in the mix. Hard to explain, i will do a video as well, someone ask me as well before. yeah eq on master mean mastering stage for me, its another things, but honestly, i am not good enough at mastering to give advice..But remember that mastering will not save your mix, as mixing will not save your production lacks/mistake/bad choices.
All You Need Is Live understood and thank you for lengthily and informative response. Look forward to that bass line video I feel it something that holds me up. I overthink too much and maybe you can give us some common ways to write in a baseline ( where to place each note on a 1/16 grid or whatever ) and also ways to just experiment with random baseline ( now that I realize how to make sure it’s in key ) and love knowing that it supposed to sound glued. I’ve experienced that at times but I can tell I’ve been doing it wrong 99% of my learning career over the last 16 years. Seems to be my biggest hold up. That and getting out of “loop land” . Making a good reference track template or explaining the best way to do this if love to know more about . I prob know all I need to know and just need to practice more. Oh sorry another idea. I’d looooove to know how you create those extra busses that are like drums go into groups then into a pre master- pre fx dry - then into pre master wet and then into master. (Oh and good settings for drum buss plugin ) I feel I experiment with it is much and sorta get ear fatigued overthinking it. Sorry I have so many ideas. Very grateful to you man. loops are not bad as far you use the right one, I like to use them if I am block and don't know where to go with my track, loops can unblock you and give you idea. yeah practice is key, you will not learn mixing by watching video but by practicing, tha tcan give you direction and way to do it but you have to practive to make it better. I don't really do mix buses, all the stuff with bus for me its more for recorded nstrument like a battery or guitars, to give glue. but thats a personal opinion.
Thank, I don't remember how i created exactly, its looks like the attack is around 100ms for both amp and filter (LPF), then mix with delay and reverb, after check wich waveform is sounding better, and adjust delay and reverb setting, but the main key is the attack around 100ms to get this kind of aspirated effect

then it doesn't matter, like ideally its better but it doesn't mean it need to be. trust your ears first. the problem with having your kick and bass not in key is that it can create phase issue , but if everything seems ok to you, then leave as it is. it also depend the legnth of your kick, some kick are very short so you don't really have note in the kick...
hey man !! this is unbelievably helpful thank you! I got a question: I just started a new track before I was watching this and I had a kick on G0 and I played my bass out of intuition on G1 now after watching this I went back and played my bass on g0 as well but this started to sound shit just as you said now I am a little confused what to do because when I got back on playing my bass on g1 I went through a bit of eq-ing and compression and got a really well sounding glue -> does that mean I did It the wrong way or is playing an octave higher also right ?
Hey, no G0 or G1 doesnt matter as far as its G, if its fitting better in G1 than G0 then stay with G1. I like my basse line to be in the same octave than my kick like this the kick is kind of playing/replacing/supporting the notes of my basseline, but if in your case its work better one octave higher, stick to it ! Listen to your ear not your eyes.

I listen a little bit, its sounding like a moog bass, to get this kind of sound, open wavetables or operator, take a sawtooth and use unison mode with 8 voices 100%, low pass filter 24, and env modulation on the filter with a an atteck aropund 120ms, you can add some noise as well to add brightness when you open the filter, or another swatooth slightly detune to add detune effect .The key here is detune sound with low pass filter 24db. Here is my attempt : www31.zippyshare.com/v/dTWdp92T/file.html . You can defenitely get closer but its a good start. And I forgot, play in F# minor..not neccessary but it will help
I am not sure of the exact defibnitation but basically with a mono synth, with unison 6 voices for exemple, when you play a G for exemple, its gonna take this note, duplicate 6 times and slightly detune each duplications . This create a effect that make your sound wider and more "massive", its giving as well this nice detune effect.

@@audioreakt No, I was following your method of transposing it to higher Octaves to see what pitch does the tuner/spectrum shows there. When it isnt transposed it says G, then +12st: G. +24st: F# AND +48st: F# again, i think its normal because we are analizing a kick so it armonics should be a bit unstable 😂, so I should consideer the note I detect when the kick isnt transposed right?
@@Pipun7534 Ah ok I know what you mean, in this case you can try to fine tune to make it move either to G or F#, try this and maybe after you transpose it will tune them all the same note. But as a kick is made from pitch modulation sometime it can be hard to really find the exact one, but if you hesitate between two, just listen with the rest of track which one sound best.
Yes and ? Are they saying that kick and basseline should be in a different key/scale ? In general having the key of your kick in the same scale than your basseline work better ( harmonically ). Obviously if your kick is in F0 and the basseline note playing in the same time than the kick is F0 they both play at the same frequency in the same time and they will "clash"(but nothing "wrong" with that if you are careful), First usually you have a sidechain on your bass which will duck the basseline note a bit, and second if your choose the right sound they should match together well and complement each other. It's not because they "clash" that you can't do it or change/play a different note...Drop me link of the tutorials you refer too please.

It's sounds good to tune you're bass line to yore kick drum because the tonality of the kick drum stays the same as it is! but doesn't that mean now that all you're track has to be in that key!! I've always seen on UA-cam producers pitch/frequency shifting the kick drum to the key that they want a track to be in! even shifting it a forth or fifth above the route note. It's nice but doesn't it in a sense restrict in creating a tune in a scale of my choise??? Im confused can anybody professional straighten this out for me cos I'm no pro!
Yes you're right, since then my opinion changed, your track scale doesn't need to be the key of your kick. I would say the kick have to be in a key that is in your scale (forth or fith like you said). But even this is not always 100% true, you have to trust your hear.
Well, that you point of view. Picking up the right sample and making sure they are both in the key is for me 90% of the "mix" ( in electronic music ). For example if your kick is down two semitone than your basseline, pitching it up your kick by two semitone can make your kick/bass fit better together than any other "mixing" process. So sure the first half of the video is about picking sample and not "mixing" as properly speaking, because the point of the first half is to let people know to don't rely only on mixage to solve "problem", especially when you begin producing music, that you think that mixing and mastering will solve all your problem.

I just do by ear, if it's sounds good it's sounds good... Don't really care much about phase issue as if its happen you will hear it straight away

Hi Paul, maybe you could do update since video has 3yr? For example relation between kick and bass volume, I've seen people putting bass 3db lower than kick or glueing them together to sound solid.Just an Idea.

I love the video as always but i don't understand the part around 2 minutes where you mention +48 pitch up/ transpose.. Are you saying this is a trick to help someone if they don't have a spectrum analyzer? sorry i am confused.. ALSO what are your thoughts on just making kicks with plugins like KICK, KICK 2 or bassism....also can you make the bass with those same plugins on a separate track this way you know 100% what the key is? THANKS for any info
Yes basically the +48 transpose is another way tio find out the tonality of your kick, it's useful when on the spectrum the kick fundamental shape is wide and then its hard to find out the exact tonality (sometime covering 3 notes on spectrum). By pitching up in octaves, the sound gonna by higher and the shape on the fundamental will be narrow, then it will be easier to find the exact tonality. Yes they are all very good plugin, I will add the punchbox of D16 to the list as well. I would say yes, but I always double check with a sppectrum anyway. Some people can even check this just by ears, but unfortunately I can't lol

Yeah its a good idea to make a video about basseline. About mixing I usually mixe in the same time that I am adding stuff, everytime I add a new element i make sure everything is already perfectly leveled, like if i add a new synth sound i make sure before to add another stuff that this synth sound fit operfectly in the mix. Hard to explain, i will do a video as well, someone ask me as well before. yeah eq on master mean mastering stage for me, its another things, but honestly, i am not good enough at mastering to give advice..But remember that mastering will not save your mix, as mixing will not save your production lacks/mistake/bad choices.

I overthink too much and maybe you can give us some common ways to write in a baseline ( where to place each note on a 1/16 grid or whatever ) and also ways to just experiment with random baseline ( now that I realize how to make sure it’s in key ) and love knowing that it supposed to sound glued. I’ve experienced that at times but I can tell I’ve been doing it wrong 99% of my learning career over the last 16 years. Seems to be my biggest hold up. That and getting out of “loop land” . Making a good reference track template or explaining the best way to do this if love to know more about . I prob know all I need to know and just need to practice more. Oh sorry another idea. I’d looooove to know how you create those extra busses that are like drums go into groups then into a pre master- pre fx dry - then into pre master wet and then into master. (Oh and good settings for drum buss plugin ) I feel I experiment with it is much and sorta get ear fatigued overthinking it. Sorry I have so many ideas. Very grateful to you man. loops are not bad as far you use the right one, I like to use them if I am block and don't know where to go with my track, loops can unblock you and give you idea. yeah practice is key, you will not learn mixing by watching video but by practicing, tha tcan give you direction and way to do it but you have to practive to make it better. I don't really do mix buses, all the stuff with bus for me its more for recorded nstrument like a battery or guitars, to give glue. but thats a personal opinion.

Thank, I don't remember how i created exactly, its looks like the attack is around 100ms for both amp and filter (LPF), then mix with delay and reverb, after check wich waveform is sounding better, and adjust delay and reverb setting, but the main key is the attack around 100ms to get this kind of aspirated effect

I just downloaded your modern techno pack which is free but I cant use most of them in Ableton, especially presets. Ableton said this files probably broken. Do you have an idea for solution ? because I am thinking to buy other packs in next times if i can fix this
@@kvanc65 You mean the Deep Techno template right ? You need to have Ableton Live 10.1 to make it works, if you have 10.0.5 or 10.0.6 it won't work.

I hear a lot about key matching between kick and base but what if the bassline is composed with random notes,with detuned fm ish sounds?
then it doesn't matter, like ideally its better but it doesn't mean it need to be. trust your ears first. the problem with having your kick and bass not in key is that it can create phase issue , but if everything seems ok to you, then leave as it is. it also depend the legnth of your kick, some kick are very short so you don't really have note in the kick...

I got a question: I just started a new track before I was watching this and I had a kick on G0 and I played my bass out of intuition on G1 now after watching this I went back and played my bass on g0 as well but this started to sound shit just as you said now I am a little confused what to do because when I got back on playing my bass on g1 I went through a bit of eq-ing and compression and got a really well sounding glue -> does that mean I did It the wrong way or is playing an octave higher also right ?
Hey, no G0 or G1 doesnt matter as far as its G, if its fitting better in G1 than G0 then stay with G1. I like my basse line to be in the same octave than my kick like this the kick is kind of playing/replacing/supporting the notes of my basseline, but if in your case its work better one octave higher, stick to it ! Listen to your ear not your eyes.

I listen a little bit, its sounding like a moog bass, to get this kind of sound, open wavetables or operator, take a sawtooth and use unison mode with 8 voices 100%, low pass filter 24, and env modulation on the filter with a an atteck aropund 120ms, you can add some noise as well to add brightness when you open the filter, or another swatooth slightly detune to add detune effect .The key here is detune sound with low pass filter 24db. I am not sure of the exact defibnitation but basically with a mono synth, with unison 6 voices for exemple, when you play a G for exemple, its gonna take this note, duplicate 6 times and slightly detune each duplications . This create a effect that make your sound wider and more "massive", its giving as well this nice detune effect.

Hey, sorry I am not getting what you trying to say. If you kick is in G and you transpose two semitones down it should be in F.
@@audioreakt No, I was following your method of transposing it to higher Octaves to see what pitch does the tuner/spectrum shows there.
When it isnt transposed it says G, then +12st: G.
+24st: F#
AND +48st: F# again, i think its normal because we are analizing a kick so it armonics should be a bit unstable 😂, so I should consideer the note I detect when the kick isnt transposed right?
In other words I should think that my kick Is naturally in G?
@@Pipun7534 Ah ok I know what you mean, in this case you can try to fine tune to make it move either to G or F#, try this and maybe after you transpose it will tune them all the same note. But as a kick is made from pitch modulation sometime it can be hard to really find the exact one, but if you hesitate between two, just listen with the rest of track which one sound best.

Yes and ? Are they saying that kick and basseline should be in a different key/scale ? In general having the key of your kick in the same scale than your basseline work better ( harmonically ). Obviously if your kick is in F0 and the basseline note playing in the same time than the kick is F0 they both play at the same frequency in the same time and they will "clash"(but nothing "wrong" with that if you are careful), First usually you have a sidechain on your bass which will duck the basseline note a bit, and second if your choose the right sound they should match together well and complement each other. It's not because they "clash" that you can't do it or change/play a different note...Drop me link of the tutorials you refer too please.

It's sounds good to tune you're bass line to yore kick drum because the tonality of the kick drum stays the same as it is! but doesn't that mean now that all you're track has to be in that key!! I've always seen on UA-cam producers pitch/frequency shifting the kick drum to the key that they want a track to be in! even shifting it a forth or fifth above the route note. It's nice but doesn't it in a sense restrict in creating a tune in a scale of my choise??? Im confused can anybody professional straighten this out for me cos I'm no pro!
Yes you're right, since then my opinion changed, your track scale doesn't need to be the key of your kick. I would say the kick have to be in a key that is in your scale (forth or fith like you said). But even this is not always 100% true, you have to trust your hear.

Well this is not called mixing, this is just picking up samples and preset ready made. Wtf.
Well, that you point of view. Picking up the right sample and making sure they are both in the key is for me 90% of the "mix" ( in electronic music ). For example if your kick is down two semitone than your basseline, pitching it up your kick by two semitone can make your kick/bass fit better together than any other "mixing" process. So sure the first half of the video is about picking sample and not "mixing" as properly speaking, because the point of the first half is to let people know to don't rely only on mixage to solve "problem", especially when you begin producing music, that you think that mixing and mastering will solve all your problem.
tutorial on how to make that bass? it has a lot of stereo as well, my basslines end up sounding like the other two
