Pocahontas county, WV Cranberry Glades are in WV Literally no cell reception in the entire county Universal sound is just nature and the sound of the world IMO
I think feathered Indians is a fantastic song, but for the Lost In Vegas guys, they love the lyrics. Nose to the Grindstone or Lady May would be my pick.
I can’t listen to follow you to virgie cause I just lost my great grandmother back in June it just hurts my heart to much I know she was 97 but still it just hits to close to home
Tyler's got the mountains in his voice, but the reason I love him is his brilliant lyrics/songwriting. He writes 99% of his own stuff, addressing the modern issues and problems of Appalachia. It's jarring, it sucks you in, makes you think. He's just so dang honest, he bares his soul, and it's so compelling. That kind of authenticity and sincerity is hard to come by these days, in many genres, and when you hear it, you stop and listen. Try "Nose on the Grindstone", or "Feathered Indians" ( kinda a love song), or one he wrote about his buddy's grandma, who was a big figure in his life as well as the group of boys he grew up with, when she passed away, it's really beautiful, "I Will Follow You to Virgie". He sings it in that same set you showed here and gives all the backstory. More Tyler, he's a really interesting and genuine talent.
Came across Tyler with nose to the grindstone (just happened to be working a 16 hour shift), you're not lying he sings on a level that goes deep. Country fried versus country pop.
Lady may tho. Honestly I listen to a ton of his stuff everyday and I can't really nail down one particular song as a favorite. All of them are just so damn good
First song someone showed me was Feathered Indians. It's not my favorite now but I loved it when I first heard it, and made me listen to every song he had. Bottles & Bibles is great lyrically and my favorite is probably either Lady May, 22nd Winter, or Follow You To Virgie. I think they would like Nose To The Grindstone too.
Cranberry Glades - also known simply as The Glades - are a cluster of five small, boreal-type bogs in southwestern Pocahontas County, West Virginia, United States. He wrote this song on a “trip” to the cranberry glades in Pocahontas county. The universal sound is the sound nature and the collective consciousness perceived in certain states of mind. It’s good to have time alone and reflect on life. This song is a product of that experience 🍄
So this was Tyler's first shot at this tune. He worked with Sturgill Simpson on this record and Sturgill actually recommended he slow the song down a bit for the studio version - that's the difference. The recorded one is actually more smooth and impact. I also HIGHLY recommend "Follow You to Virgie." It's about his best friend's grandmother. Brilliant tune.
To me the Universal Sound is just like the universe in general. Something that connects everyone and everything in nature. And also I kinda like the studio version. I usually like his live stuff, but this studio version is pretty good
I'm surprised people recommended "Universal Sound" so highly. I mean, "Feathered Indians", "Harlan Road", "Nose on the Grindstone" are way better IMO. And I think the recorded version of "Universal Sound" is better too. I'm glad you guys are giving him a second chance, and I hope you come around. I practically proselytize the guy to my friends.
I'm a huge Tyler fan. I got to watch him around bars in Huntington, WV when I was in school. I've even had a few short convos with him and he's such a down to earth, amazing person. This is one of the first songs I recommend to people. It's great.
Tyler has bars! One of my favs right now, what a songwriter! Love the style in his voice. Lady May, follow you to virgie, feathered Indian, so many good ones
"Universe of sounds" = music. He's singing about the literal metaphor of what music is. Something we can all relate to no matter what genre we listen to. Music is peace for the soul. It's how we get our feelings, dreams and thoughts across.
I really wish you guys had listened to Hard Times that was recorded at this same session. The amount of heart and soul he puts into it and the pain in his voice will blow you away.
Never clicked so fast on a video ever! So excited you guys are getting back into Tyler Childers. I still think he has better songs than this, but this is better than Whitehouse Road
Bingo. I've seen a few reaction or analysis videos of this song and no one seems to get it. I don't do meditation, but as I understand, the Om is called the universal sound. Also, it could be he is in rehab (he's referred to it before I think) and that's why he is isolated. He refers to tobacco juice and moonshine which would suggest withdrawal. I think they do teach meditation in some of those programs as a way of coping. In any case I find the song very moving.
Pocahontas is a national forest in pocahontas county WV. In the natl Forrest there is a place called the cranberry glades. Very beautiful. It's all wilderness. camping, fishing, hiking. No cell service and no charge on his phone anyways. The universal sound is everything around us. The sound of the world, wind, music, laughter and everything in between.
In my unprofessional opinion, the universal sound is just music in general, and he's out on the road playing and he doesn't have charge or bars on his phone to call his girl.
The universal sound : "Om". The sound of the universe, the "word" that "God" spoke to bring about existence. In Buddhism, it can be heard and felt in meditation as the vibration of the universe. Tyler goes on to mention God, who he sees in the face of a bar patron as well as in the world around him. I'm guessing he's been on some DMT trips.
He's talking about meditation and thinking about his life. He's not in jail. I believe the universal sound is the "OM" sound people often make during meditation.
Listened to him for a while now. I've heard this song and never looked at the meaning of the song in the angle that you two gentlemen have. Very interesting and good points! Got me subscribed for sure!
I'm the typical "Listen to everything but country" kind of guy, but recently I've been exploring the genre a bit and have found that Tyler Childers really appeals to me. Especially this song and Feathered Indians. If you're in the same camp as me, I'd also recommend "Good Lord Lorrie" by Turnpike Troubadours.
To me... the album version has great production and instrumentation that really elevates the track. His vocals also have a lot more character and nuance in the produced version (obviously).
Guys... listen to the recorded version. It’s beautiful. This is a song about meditation and self reflection. It has nothing to do with jail. The universal sound is music.
His new song on his new album “House Fire” is a banger. I feel like y’all got two of his early, slightly tougher, works. Keep it up tho! Love the channel.
Damnit, y’all got the wrong song AGAIN! This ain’t bad, but if you wanna see Tyler at his best, y’all NEED to listen to “Hard Times/Nose on the Grindstone/Bottles and Bibles” 0/2 for me y’all. But it might just be me. But believe me when I tell you, this dude is amazing and worth another shot. Y’all just keep missing.
To me the universal sound is silence. You have to try really hard to not hear. Like in meditation or prayer it’s just you and the universe, nothing else.
The first verse refers to the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area in Pocahontas County WV. WV native here. Pocahontas county, which is home to the Cranberry Glades. No jails or anything that way. One of the most rustic places in WV, and some good fishing. As mentioned, there's no cell service up that way.
