I'm glad to read that I'm not the only grown ass man that gets choked up by this song. The "boys be good" at the end always spins me off into thought about my 2 sons and how they'll navigate their own journeys through life both while I'm here and when I'm gone. Great breakdown as always Michael.
My Dad always told my sister and me “boys be good”. We didn’t have any brothers. He also told us that we could do and become whatever we wanted in an era where female roles were more limited than they are today. We lived just a few ridges northeast of Virgie . He died early from black lung disease. I cry every time I hear this song because it is a beautiful tribute to the unconditional love of parents and grandparents or families who support the next generation to follow their dreams.
I am from Virgie and this song always reminds me of my mom who passed a couple years ago. It took me this long to be able to listen to it all the way through without crying.
This song always reminds me of my Granny. She lived her whole life in SE KY. Her grandchildren all run the gamut from being very straightlaced to being very honkytonk. It didn't matter to her at all. My cousins and I would get together on her porch and play guitars and sing. Most of us were into a mix of Zeppelin, Neil Young etc so that's mostly what we played. Not her style at all but she loved it all the same. She would clap along and keep asking us to keep going. We learned a few gospel and bluegrass tunes...probably just for her. My cousins and I played Larry Fuller's "I Like To Go Back There" at her funeral...it was the one she always asked for.
Tyler has 2 sisters, no brothers. Cody was a good friend and they spent a lot of time at Cody's grandmother's singing and playing guitars. In Appalachia, especially in the hollers, friends families are like your family. So I imagine Tyler remembered her the way he would his own grandmother. P.S. Everyone always talks about Tyler's voice and lyrics (which I LOVE), but hardly anyone talks about the way he plays guitar. It's pretty simple and straightforward, but I love the way he hammers those strings.
His voice is so great and haunting at the same time! Grabs your attention right away and keeps you engaged untill the end and I don't recall too many times when a musician is able to do that to me

5/26/2019 is the day my dad left this world. He was diagnosed with cancer just 5 weeks prior. It was Sunday morning when I got the phone call. I had spent the night before with him for a few hours, told him I would come watch the Indy 500 with him (pretty much the last thing I said to him). He was a bit of a race car driver himself, and even though he didn’t serve in the military he was VERY appreciative of the people that made that sacrifice for the rest of us. So it was kind of fitting that he checked out on Memorial Day weekend… a 5 week cancer “battle” was tough on me, at least he did not suffer for very long as he was basically his healthy normal self when he found out he had cancer… he went to the doc because he had had heart burn for about a month and then ultimately some blood in his (cough) stool. Imagine thinking you might have an ulcer, or just need some prescription reflux medication, but have the doc tell you that you have 6-12 months to live lol. For me it was basically a car crash as he kept the severity of the diagnosis completely to him self, and until the last two weeks he really did seem “fine” and pretty much like his normal self. Driving to moms house after I got that phone call Stapleton’s Broken Halos came on the radio for me for the first time… man I was such a mess (and mostly because of broken halos lol). The thing that breaks my heart to this day is that I grew up with my grandpa being a huge part of my life, he was my fishing and hunting buddy, staying up to late watching “violent” movies with him lol, ext ext. My dad was a great Grampa to my 3 year old son already but he would have been unbelievable over the next 20 years or so. And same for my daughter, she’s a “rainbow baby” I guess they say, she was born the December after my dad passed, he was the first person we told about her in his last week of life… just rips my heart out even to this day. Anyways happy Memorial Day everyone, and for those that this holiday is for… I truly thank you for your service and sacrifices!
I would love to see you react to the live version of Angel Band. It is a lyrical and storytelling masterpiece. Reminds me so much of my southern gospel roots. I would happily pay money to see you break it down and react to it!

Idk if this has ever been requested before but please check out a local lexington ky legend named Ben Lacy!! Even if just for yourself. He's phenomenal and unlike anyone youve ever heard. I know theres an old saying something along the lines of good guitarists inspire people to pick up the guitar but great guitarists inspire people to put theirs down or something like that. Trust me there are plenty of guitars in kentucky pawn shops and landfills because of Ben Lacy. As a guitar player, if youve never checked him out you owe it to yourself. A good starting point is his cover of Kashmir

Long time viewer but first time commenter... I got a call last night that one of my best friends from high school passed away yesterday. It has been a rough day to say the least. Earlier this morning, I passed on a free ticket to see Tyler Childers live tomorrow night because I don't think I'd be able to handle it emotionally. In trying to distract myself, I opened UA-cam and this video was the first one recommended on my home screen. I live across the country and I'm hoping to fly home for his funeral to be with all of my childhood friends to celebrate his life. Thanks for giving me a sign that he's up there, Michael.

Lukas Nelson is the son of Willie Nelson, and he does a really good job of making his version his own. Which I think is particularly difficult with Jimi Hendrix songs. I would love to see your reaction to this song it's a psychedelic blues masterpiece.
