Turtles all the way down is a reference to a story Sturgill told once on JRE: Sturgill was attending some type of lecture about the structure of the cosmos or something along those lines, and at some pint a lady stood up and said basically that there’s no way any of this is true because as a Native American legend states, we’re all just riding around on the back of a large turtle. The lecturer, or whoever was leading the discussion, in an attempt to show what a silly idea that was then asked, “Well, what’s the turtle riding on?” The lady responded, “It’s turtles all the way down” It’s meant to point out the absurdity of fundamental religious belief and how pointless it can be to try to change the mind of someone so invested in maintaining those beliefs however absurd.
When I was a kid I heard the description of a flat Earth on top of infinite turtles attributed to medieval Catholicism but I guess it does make more sense to be a native american image. Either way it always made me feel like, no matter how deep we go into understanding life and nature, there will always be some left to the unknown
Actually the real mythology is that the Earth rests on the back of a turtle and that turtle rests on the back of a larger turtle and so on forever. The concept is refereed to as infinite regress.
Three things: Sturgill didn't originate the saying, the World Turtle is a part of many cultures (not just Native American), and the saying doesn't actually come from the World Turtle myth directly. I think Carl Sagan told the story originally, but I could be wrong. It is an old story though. Basically it's as Michael Worley told it. As far as I know, the World Turtle myth does not say what the World Turtle is standing on, if anything.
To give some perspective. My father had committed suicide 5 years ago. The aftershock almost ruined my life. I was on hard drugs and on the verge of suicide. My friend introduced me to psychedelics and they saved my life. They taught me how to love myself again and showed me that my life has purpose.

It's reference to a philosophical discussion. Some people believe that Earth is built on the back of a turtle. A student asks his professor "well what's under the turtle?" And he tells him that it's turtles all the way down.
After their reaction to the religious references in the beginning of the song I thought to myself “y’all are really going to loose it when you hear the reptile aliens made of light line.” Then they skipped it...

"Turtles all the way down" is an expression of the problem of infinite regress. The saying alludes to the mythological idea of a World Turtle that supports the earth on its back. Just found this channel. Love what y’all are doing, and I love the diversity of genres. DMT is specifically what Sturg is talking about when he mentions chemicals that we all make in our brain. It’s also how he saw reptile aliens made of light that cut you open and tear out all your pain.
Why did you guys cut out "Reptile aliens full of light cut you open and pull out all your pain" from the video? That's the most interesting line. Regardless, you guys are great. Listen all of the time.
He’s referencing DMT. It’s found throughout your body and in a wide varieties of plants across the world. Upon doing it, you realize that there is something more than can be explained. Also if there is not something more than can be explained, then it doesn’t make the trip worth while.
Bravo! Prefect interpretation. All the music journalists had it wrong until sturgill clarified it. The song is about drugs. Also "Turtles all the way down" refers to the problem of infinite regression. Love the channel guys.. keep it up

Call to arms by Sturgill Simpson! Its such a great medley of genres and the lyrics are some of his best and most relevant in todays work. Plus its off his grammy winning album which was up for album of the year.
The human brain has layers to it. The reptile brain, which manages motor function, and "base" things. The mammal brain which makes us soft and cuddly, and emotional. And the cerebellum, where we have conceptual thought. Turtles are reptiles, and combined with the psychedelic references means getting to know the animal parts of the brain, and ourselves. Yes, we are the turtles.
Just came across your video on UA-cam, I love Sturgill Simpson and your review was very refreshing to see someone being exposed to him for the first time. Keep up the good work

Love this song, love everything you guys do. Watching you guys struggle with the message and then realize what it was about 2/3 through was so much fun. If you watch the video for the song, you would get it 30 seconds in. “Turtles all the way down” is a reference to Steven Hawking quote from his book “brief history of time.” You came pretty close to the meaning, because it is referencing an old women’s reaction to a speakers explanation of space and time. Her response was “everything you have said today was rubbish, we all know that the universe is just the earth on top of a turtle.” The speaker responds “ok, but what is the turtle standing on” her response “very clever young man, but we all know it is turtles all the way down!” Of course the speaker is speechless, how can you respond to a belief like that.
Not sure if anyone told you yet, but DMT is a hallucinogen that is naturally produced by your brain. It is the main psychoactive component of ayhuasca, used for native vision quests. The trips are very short in duration (5-10min) but can feel like like days, and users report coming in contact with the same type otherworldly beings. Back to the original comment about being made in the brain, apparently it's released in large quantities in your brain at two points in your life: first, in the womb and second at death. Draw whatever conclusions from that you want. Google the quote "Turtles all the way down for an explanation of that one. I forget the exact context of it, but remember it's a good one.
The line "Tell me how you make illegal Something that we all make in our brain" Is a reference to free will, not drugs. In other lines to the song Simpson elaborates that drugs can be the metaphorical key to unlocking your mind, self awareness, empathy, and self actualization. Which is why he ends his song stating "So don't waste your mind on nursery rhymes Or fairy tales of blood and wine" Because to him the real miracle lies within ourselves, in our minds, and the beauty of life all around us. Not in any particular religion, and that's how it's always been "It's turtles all the way down the line" And always will be
You guys are awesome. Definitely not going on my playlist, it just isn't my style of music but part of the reason I listen to you guys is because you open me up to things I would listen to on my own. Also if there is not something more than can be explained, then it doesn’t make the trip worth while.
Bravo! Prefect interpretation. All the music journalists had it wrong until sturgill clarified it. The song is about drugs. Also "Turtles all the way down" refers to the problem of infinite regression. Love the channel guys.. keep it up
Lol oh noes you skipped the best lyrics: "Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain."
Kevin AD That’s the lyric I wanted to see their reaction to! Haha! Sturgill has definitely been doing DMT and read some of the studies done on people. Trippy stuff.
That is the best lyrics in the song , can’t believe they skipped it
Turtles all the way down is a philosophical joke. Or rather a paradox that addressed the problem.of the unmoved mover.

Love the unbiased analysis of a concept. Keep on keepin on from Austin Tx!
Met the devil in Seattle spent nine months inside the lions den. Is a reference to heroin addiction when he lived in Seattle. Turtles all the way down the line is a poke at you don't know whats happening. People used to believe we were on the back of a large turtle floating through space

Lol he never had a heroin addiction or alcohol problem 😂 I’ve heard him talk publicly about his Wikipedia says he had a drinking problem and his insurance company brought it up and he told them that is completely inaccurate. Not every talented musician is an addict lol
Love the way you guys broke it down.
Very interesting song. I really do love the sound also. My first hearing it, so thanks for the exposure to new music.
Call to arms by Sturgill Simpson! Its such a great medley of genres and the lyrics are some of his best and most relevant in todays work. Plus its off his grammy winning album which was up for album of the year.
Pearl Jam - Black... Please
Great job as usual. Always stoked to see a new video on my list.
Yes! It is a odd song. It's does have this beautiful comforting feel. One of my favorite songs.
The DMT reference explains a lot lol. Plus the video is tripping balls crazy 😂😂
Just came across your video on UA-cam, I love Sturgill Simpson and your review was very refreshing to see someone being exposed to him for the first time. Keep up the good work
Cody jinks Hippies and Cowboys
Just found this channel and I was going to suggest this! Great to see you already on it.
U lots are the only reaction Chanel I enjoy watching
Goka Gola Gommunism no he just steals music
all the other music reaction channels seem like rip off of these guys like they wait to see which songs LIV get the most hits with and then do a shitty version . Love to see your reaction to Colter Wall "Kate McCannon" i discovered him from your channel. IDK which video it was but in the comments someone recommended Tyler Childers who is also great, but that led me to colter wall. Thanks again guys for turning this metalhead onto folk and country
bdcollar i found a cool reaction channel today called vinand sori.
check them out. they have a unique perspective
You should check out "The Promise" by Sturgill. Great cover of the song by "When in Rome". Its his most impressive vocal performance, IMO.
YEEESSSS!!!! This song is the best!! This song is about psychedelic drugs btw. And George, turtles all the way down means pretty much how you interpreted it. You guys should do “It ain’t all flowers” it’s so different than any other country song I’ve ever heard, it’s almost like a 60s-70s psychedelic rock/country song
Ryan D second that song! My favorite cut from the entire album. That song will take you places even WITHOUT enablers!
It Ain't all flowers is dope!
His best song imo
The whole album is amazing. “Brace for impact” or his rendition of “in bloom” would be cool too
Hell yeah on It ain't all flowers!
Sturgill blew your minds😂. Thanks for going so deep. There a few like Sturgill he doesn’t care what the industry like, he keeps doing his shit!
Sturgill Simpson is the shit! His style on this album is almost prog-country I don't really know how to describe it. Good stuff!
Jerry Salmon all 3 of his albums are good and available on Amazon music
"Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain"
This verse is part of the song but was edited out. Why?
You can have the crown is Sturgill's best song. Tho I do love this one.
I agree and they would LOVE the lyrics!
Hey there fellas! I think your videos are a wake up call to everyone around the world! Get out there and listen to everything, and i mean LISTEN! This was a great tune to hear out. I have mad respect for you two gentleman to get on here and put all of it out there. Could you please do a request for me with one of my favorite bands "The Smiths" . Id love to hear your reactions to either "Panic" or "The Boy with the thorn in his side" . Again thank you and keep up the fantastic work you two. I will be looking forward to tuning in! Cheers from California!
Uncle Lucius- keep the wolves away
You guys are the Kings of the music reaction space. You’ve been on another level with it since the beginning. I wish I had a friend I could talk to about music like you guys do. I admit to talking “with” you when watching your videos 😂. I’ll probably be the last person to cancel my Patreon. Peace and happiness to you both.
So glad y’all did this song! 👍🏻
Please look at Uncle Lucius-Keeping the Wolves Away!
Her response was “everything you have said today was rubbish, we all know that the universe is just the earth on top of a turtle.” The speaker responds “ok, but what is the turtle standing on” her response “very clever young man, but we all know it is turtles all the way down!” Of course the speaker is speechless, how can you respond to a belief like that.
i swear to god - tyler childers
Highly Suspect - my name is human!
rustyshackleferd22 that’s a good song, I also like Seratonia, Wolf, Little one, Mister Asylum.
rustyshackleferd22 or Lydia, Bloodfeather, or Little One!
The line
"Tell me how you make illegal
Something that we all make in our brain"
Is a reference to free will, not drugs. In other lines to the song Simpson elaborates that drugs can be the metaphorical key to unlocking your mind, self awareness, empathy, and self actualization. Which is why he ends his song stating
"So don't waste your mind on nursery rhymes
Or fairy tales of blood and wine"
Because to him the real miracle lies within ourselves, in our minds, and the beauty of life all around us. Not in any particular religion, and that's how it's always been
"It's turtles all the way down the line"
And always will be

REFLECTION
Having listened to Sturgill, when he" looks into the eyes of his best friend", references to his grandfather.
Emmylou Harris - Boulder to Birmingham (You need to hear the best female voice in country music)
You guys are awesome. Definitely not going on my playlist, it just isn't my style of music but part of the reason I listen to you guys is because you open me up to things I would listen to on my own. Having loved an addict I believe that this is a song about someone who is an addict and has tried to become clean but just isn't really ready.
The Sword - Freya
Red Fang - Hank is Dead
Sturgill is one of the best songwriters ever. “Love is the only thing that has ever saved my life” is the most impactful line I’ve heard in music. This song of his perspective is insane
You guys need to watch The Joe Rogan Experience with Sturgill Simpson. He explains everything you are asking about and it's a really good interview/podcast.
Great honest review guys! Seems like u got a lot of the same options as me as far as what sounds good and the meaning of lyrics. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 subscribing now!
Please react to Sturgill Simpson- it ain't all flowers
Jacob Meier the first time I heard it ain’t all flowers I was driving in the middle of the night alone. I just about shit myself & died. 😂 But it is an awesome song
I agree
Man, Simpson's voice is something else. Gave me chills. Another stellar reaction, and another artist to keep an eye on. This song is definitely going on the playlist. My musical repertoire has grown exponentially thanks to Lost in Vegas, and for that, all I can say is thank you, gentlemen. The world needs the Freethinker movement. #freethinkers
I would like to hear you react to Lingus by Snarky Puppy. The muscianship in this song is out of this world.
You guys got to listen to “you can have the crown” by Sturgill Simpson
There are a lot of people doing what you guys do but your two are far superior to everyone else. Keep it going!!!!
Sturgill is hands down the best country song writer since Billy Joe shaver. This is from his psychedelic album. The video is super trippy.
I agree...great nickname by the way!!!
Love this channel!! Much respect
Check out Tyler Childers- Whitehouse Road. Sturgill Simpson was a producer for his album. You guys will dig it!
Love Tyler and Sturgill, but he over produced that album. Still decent though.
i love you guys! keep bringing the great videos! #freethinkers
