    Thank you for this video! I watched it several times to get familiar before attempting working on my 2006 Mazda Tribute. Then I played it back step by step as I followed along. Then just to make sure, I rewatched to see that everything went back together the right way. Much appreciation for your details and editing to put this together.

    on the 2003 you can actually disconnect 1,2,3 coil packs while running, its tight but can be done. #1 appears to be my culprit. great vid helped me as far as coil packs and no check eng light.

    Great video. Very helpful.
    I did this last night. The detail you provided gave me confidence to do this myself instead of paying $100s to a local shop. After putting everything back together, the car started right up and ran like it's supposed to. The check engine light came back on after a few minutes though. The error was for the throttle sensor. I found the connector wasn't secure...my fault. Thank goodness I purchased a code scanner the day before! All good now.

    Phillip, I just subscribed. The things you showed such as unplugging the coils to test them was very helpful. I knew you could unplug spark plugs on older cars but wasn't sure about these more modern systems. Learning little details and short-cut type of things is important. Well done sir - I will share your info as well.

    Great job explaining in detail and showing everything you did. I just changed the plugs with another video, but yours is so much better and accurate. Now I have to go back in with your idea on the coils. Thanks.

    PCMs are very reliable. But the failure rates are pretty high with this car and engine. So don't be shocked if it happens. It happened to me. One cylinder was misfiring. Changed all plugs and coils. Same misfire until I changed the pcm.

    • @kevinearles1
      @kevinearles1 4 роки тому

      Did you have to get it flashed or whatever or was it just plug and play and ran fine after you simply put in another pcm? Having the same issue. Also, what did you gap your plug at?

    • @MrAquinas1
      @MrAquinas1 4 роки тому +1

      @@kevinearles1 You can usually buy a preflashed pcm. They'll ask your exact mileage and vin number, because the ignition timing will become a hair different with an aging engine and a reputable rebuild place will data correct it in the flash. Don't remember the plug gap offhand. New plugs are normally pregaped nowadays, but you can always do an internet search for just about any spec for just about any vehicle. One thing I hasten to add. It was spitting out codes pointing to a possible bad pcm.

    • @kevinearles1
      @kevinearles1 4 роки тому

      @@MrAquinas1 appreciate the fast reply. Mine showed code p0303. I put a new plug and coil in and it ran good for like 30 seconds and then started running horrible

    • @MrAquinas1
      @MrAquinas1 4 роки тому

      @@kevinearles1 Another point. You have to get the PCM to recognize your keys. There is a procedure. I did this seven years ago. I don't remember if instructions came with the PCM, or my mechanic advised me how to do it. I'm into my senior years. I used to do all my own work, but now I can only do work that doesn't require crawling under.

    • @MrAquinas1
      @MrAquinas1 4 роки тому

      @@kevinearles1 One more point. To get the warranty coverage on the PCM, they required that I change all the plugs and coils and keep the receipts.

    My 01 v6 only runs like crap when it is cold and below 1000 rpm.
    If you give it a little throttle it clears up so i'm thinking lower intake gasket?
    Once it reaches operating temp the rough idle goes away but i do have a cylinder 1 misfire code.

    Do you know that there is an inbuilt engine diagnostics tool built into this vehicle?
    On the dashboard, press and hold in the odometer reset button, then turn on the ignition, without starting and still holding the button until the odo display changes to diagnostic mode. Release the button.
    Using the button again, one can then step through the various test modes including the engine diagnostic codes, if any.

    Philip, I got a problem. Mine is either the PCM or the wiring harness to it. I've also got the cluster throwing communication codes and doing self-tests while driving, lol. It will send the speedometer and tach up to max swing and go back down when you hit the brakes and crazy stuff like that. At least mine is cylinder 5 and 6. I wiggled the PCM connector and the idle speed reacted positively for a second. Ever mess with that big bundle of wires?

    Good test method, but please engine off whilst changing the coil out, may stop ECU coil driver failure. I have the same fault on a 2001 V6 ATM. Found 5/6 could had cracks in the potting on top near the connector, so changing all 6. Great video.

    Wouldn’t it have been a good idea to just replace the plugs and coils in the back since it was all apart?

    • @FixItPhillip
      @FixItPhillip  4 роки тому +1

      Yes that is a good idea, in this particular case the customer wanted the 3 known good coils in the front swapped to the back and just replace the failed one. But yes if you are already back there, wouldn't be a bad idea

      Did you ever find the problem? I have the exact issue as you did. I’ve checked/cleaned or replaced spark plugs, coils, injectors, fuel pump, egr, pcv, maf, iacv, vacuum leaks, even replaced the catalytic converter. No engine codes at all. Runs normal at idle, but if the AC is on it will misfire at idle randomly. At highway speeds it misfires and shakes the vehicle if I’m in a high gear/low revs. Not as bad at higher RPM so is worse under load. Running out of ideas and almost ready to sell the thing hahaha

    This is great...thanks Phillip! This is exactly happening to my 2005 Escape now. The mechanic quoted ~$1k to fix the 3rd cylinder. Majority of that cost is taking off the top which you demonstrated. I'm debating whether I should do it myself. Question...how long did it take you to complete the project?

  • @kevinearles1
    @kevinearles1 4 роки тому

    Hey Philip. I have the same engine that was doing the same thing and had code p0303. I put in a new plug gapped to .52 and a new coil. Started it up and is running horrible. What could I have done wrong?

    • @MrAquinas1
      @MrAquinas1 4 роки тому +2

      It could still be the pcm. When I had what definitely proved to be the pcm, the misfire was very intermittent. At times the engine ran fine for a couple of minutes, then would misfire again for a minute, run smooth for another minute, then misfire again, etc. That's the way flakey electronics can be, the weak point on these pcms are what is generally the weak point on electronic boards most frequently with substandard design: second rate capacitors. When the dielectic dries out between the plates of the capacitor, it's no longer doing its job. I think they had a recall that covered vehicles with less than 80.000 miles. I don't know if it's still in effect. I had 82 thousand when mine went bad.

    Hey Phillip thank you for the video first of all! Definitely showed me something new and had a question, i am actually working on my FEscape05 and i know for a fact i got a misfire from a failing plug going on but would that alone be attributed to my cars rough time going up in gears?( I suppose that's what it is) for example I'll have a hard time getting through 50mph and when i finally do i get misfires and definitely feel some turbulence in the pedal, vehicle was gifted to me by family but as far as they know they said it had a couple of things going on with a vapor box, some air sensors, and i believe a motor mount. But could it be something much more urgent?

    So you switch coils put it all back together and you still got to misfire number 3 cylinder so you got to take everything apart again or what the f*** that's a b******* design. It'd be so much easier if you could just test it while you had everything together so you can run
