27:38 You already determined that the cylinder walls are fine with the leakdown test: Air was only going out the tailpipe. No air in the crankcase means cylinder walls/rings are fine. No air in the air box means intake valves are fine. If you're not sure, plug the tailpipe and check if ANY air is coming through to the crankcase, or use a 100 PSI smoke machine. what savage leaves a plate of food in the foot well. is the customer a racoon? haha, Hannah sabotage as a going away present. what would cause a chunk of valve to come off?
@@armpitdew Either that, or a foreign object entered the cylinder. Furthermore, carbon buildup can come loose during excessive revs, breaking spark plugs, denting piston crowns and chipping valves, especially during an "Italian Tune-up"...
Detonation from low octane fuels can also cause weird damage. Exhaust valves overheat, and eventually burn or fracture. Finally, we can't rule out a manufacturing defect of the part itself. QC isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
I have personally had a couple exhaust valves fail from detonation. Mine was caused by the tune having too much timing and it eve took out the headgaskets in the corresponding cylinders. Can't rule out predet as an option of failure.
That was pretty cool! I bought one of those cameras months ago because i saw you use it. Not a great camera but it worked perfectly in this instance to show exactly what was wrong! pretty awesome!

You want to call us keyboard cats yet you're the one being the keyboard warrior. If you are so sensitive to Eric's customers that you can't take said joke then instead of calling the poor dude who's just trying to laugh along a jackass, simply close the window and move on with your life. If the person who owns the vehicle watches the channel doesn't like what they see, they have that same option.

Tawi Dave how do you know he didn't go across the street off camera and buy some good air? Must he show every single step? Maybe he Installed a brand new fresh air filter on his compressor. My money is on him buying it across the street and the only reason the compressor ran is because tire guy came back again.

what do you think causes a valve to break like this ?
This condition is usually caused by alternative very high temperature and low temperature. Cracks start to form and eventually the pieces fall off into the cylinder and misfires occur. With constant high temperature the valve metal will soften giving a concave effect. Heavy loading and a lean condition will result in a very hot engine.
Probably started out as a little bitty crack. Once it made it through enough to leak, then you have (in effect) a cutting torch acting on it and the rest most likely burned away.

Ok, so I'm OCD, but I vacuum my interior, clean the dash & have the interior look its best when I drop my car in for repair.
Although it's always pretty clean!
you must be the luckiest mechanic! if that was my job even with the camera it would be on the other side of the valve! very cool video!
what savage leaves a plate of food in the foot well. is the customer a racoon?
haha, Hannah sabotage as a going away present.
what would cause a chunk of valve to come off?
RL Agito from the position of the chip I am thinking it touch the piston head

Wow that is awesome that you got such a good view of that valve. As always great diagnoses and thank you for taking your time to film it.
How nice of them to leave you a snack when your done with the mary jane.
That was pretty cool! I bought one of those cameras months ago because i saw you use it. Not a great camera but it worked perfectly in this instance to show exactly what was wrong! pretty awesome!
Makes me wonder if the HF impact power indicator lights actually work. Maybe they just go from full power to no power all of a sudden? Seems to be working well for you otherwise though.
That camera is great. I need to get me one of those. That would be great for showing the customer what was actually wrong.
"That's me looking at you looking at me looking at you" Pchew! *mind blown*
Thanks for the video.
Hi Eric, Nice diagnosis mate. Very weird for a valve to be damaged like that. Anyway I hope you get the job. Cheers from Queensland Australia. Mark.
Mr. O go home get some rest. Great vid 🤓
Eric, Sometimes we can see better than you think we can. Ex: The shot of the top of the piston was good enough for us to see what you were taking about, shoot a little brake clean in the spark plug hole would have cleaned the piston top a bit. thanks for the video's.
Perfect, lucky the valve had rotated to the correct position for to diag.. This tool could be perfected easily.
nice work Eric. I bought one of those little USB cameras as well. I could see the chunk missing in the exhaust valve clear as a bell. Hope you get the job.
Prolly shouldn't use your bad air around that engine. It's ruined for sure now!
Engine gonna rot now prolly.
The joke that the previous gentlemen made went so far over your head it's not even funny.
Buddy, you probably don't even know the joke about the "Bad Air". And even if you do, what kind of person are you to call someone a jackass just because they made a joke on the internet? You want to call us keyboard cats yet you're the one being the keyboard warrior. If you are so sensitive to Eric's customers that you can't take said joke then instead of calling the poor dude who's just trying to laugh along a jackass, simply close the window and move on with your life. If the person who owns the vehicle watches the channel doesn't like what they see, they have that same option.
@Paul Reader, Nobody understands a word your saying, are you illiterate?
Paul - you seriously need to lay off the tequila before 7 AM...
the launch tool has a relative compression test in it....saw it on the launch screen when you did running misfire test.....the ford tool and snap on tool has the relative compression test on tool.... for most newer fords with can network....great video as always!
"We're going into the hole together"
opl500 Dr. O., AG. Automotive Gynecologist
LOL, LOL, LOL...
for only a second I felt dirty.
Bro - great fast diagnosis - but the glance at the camera when you questioned the age of the plugs was what made me subscribe, :)
Hey great video! Did you try the dollar bill test on the tail pipe while it was running? I bet the exhaust would have sucked it back in while the engine was running.. which of course would indicate a valve train issue. Thanks for sharing!
Very handy tip.
Dr. O that was awesome! A clinic on analyzing a misfire from start to finish. Very cool to watch and learn from. Absolutely love that power balance test and wish I had it on my OTC. Thanks Dr. O!
Who in the hell brings their car to a Shop looking like that inside. I'd be ashamed if i were the customer to take it anywhere like that.
You would be ashamed because you think it's disgusting. The people who brought it in don't see anything wrong with that pile and therefore aren't ashamed.. Like people with cats..
John...cats are cool. Don`t go there :))
Okay, people with three or more cats...
@@ohger1 I've got three, OUTSIDE❗
Hey. Mind the cat snark. I've got 2 and a dog. And they're all awesome!!!
I have a 2010 Escape, this is very helpful. Thanks for sharing Eric.
I've worked on those Escapes before. A place I use to work for had several of them. I've seen drugs in several cars I've worked on before. Thats why I hardly ever take customers cars on test drives. I don't want to get pulled over and say to the cops thats not mine. LOL
And the cops go like "oh yea sure, they all say that " LOL
1970chevelle396 I used to work for a Mazda dealership and we had a lot of tributes which were the same as the escapes. They only came in two ways either immaculately taken care of or ragged to the nines. No in between
I once bought a 68 short bed chevy once and was about to drive off and the guy said hold it and got in and pulled a needle and syringe out of the front seat.
Glad to see that taste, and smell, are still part of the process.....!
Computer detects misfire, Shuts down injector!! News at Eleven!! Cool!!
Awesome Eric with the little camera you can see it clearly nice call
"My husband also forgot his lunch and ciggy's on the passenger side floor.
BOOM! You Da Man. I have a 2010 Ford Escape 180K just started to misfire a little. Great research video for me. Thanks
That valve was fine, before you blew your bad air in there.
Tawi Dave you are da devil.loco.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bad compressed air can do so much damage.,..way more than most people think..so always make sure your air is always nice and fresh
LOL, Tawi Dave that made my day!
Tawi Dave how do you know he didn't go across the street off camera and buy some good air? Must he show every single step? Maybe he Installed a brand new fresh air filter on his compressor. My money is on him buying it across the street and the only reason the compressor ran is because tire guy came back again.
I have two of those cheap USB cameras. One for my phone and one for my shop. They work surprisingly well. The mirror attachment you have is nice.
am really sorry for saying this, but how in the world can you keep you car that dirty ? How can you take you car to the shop and leave food on the floor like that ? I bet she goes to the doctor with dirty underwear too.
You are supposed to wear CLEAN underwear when you go to the doctor? OMG!!!!
And that's why I get my car washed once a week. And vacuumed out. Along with keeping trash and garbage out of my car. It's the little things
This is after she cleared it out some
I dated a girl once that left her half eaten Whopper in the glove box of my new 82 Toronado. Her mother told me I was wasting my time. I took her mom's advice extra quick especially after seeing her apartment which looked like a missile hit a garbage dump.
@@newjerseybt At least she won't nag you to clean up all the time.
Very thorough and knowledgable mechanic👍
Holy nasty! You ought to leave a can of Lysol and some Armor all wipes on the seat, maybe she'll get the hint. I can never understand how people treat their cars like garbage cans. I have an '05 Envoy and although it's old, I would never let it get in that condition.
it has nothing to do with age... old cars are nothing bad... I don´t clean my car with a white gloves and a brush everyday because it is made to be used...but I keep it clean to some extend because I spend at least 2 hours a day in there and I would not feel good in such a dirty shit..
Chedder CheeseHead now we all know exactly WHERE Eric can use his Brake Clean in this video! I'd of sprayed that crap down with Brake clean, panther piss, And Lysol before ever gettin in the car.
+John Shay just get some tyvek painters suits and duct tape for the leg and wrist cuffs to seal to boots and gloves.
My 98 ram doesn't get that bad.. I mean all that's in there is receipts and extra parts
Our scan tools at Chrysler were little wireless pods like that. They had a yellow tag that hung down, but still easy to forget. I had a long bright green stretchy coil (like one of those wristband keychains) that I would latch to the vehicle keys.
is it just me or at 24:52 you can see the missing piece of the valve by the cylinder wall.
take down coming soon...
Good one , those borescopes come in handy . TheReaper!
How in the lightning thunder did a piece of the valve break off ; must be a china part . IDK
I was wondering the same thing. Not a fan of 4 cylinder engines. Was this being drag raced or something crazy like that.
Sure ol "hubby" dropped sumthin in the hole...probly some petrified leftovers by the looks of it
If you look at the pic, you can see it was relatively smooth -- meaning it melted.
Great diagnostic! Thanks for taking the time to explain the little things.
