  • In this video I do a comparison between the Nikon Z7 and the Nikon D90. Just a quick test in the field. Is the new Z system better than the old F system. Well, yes! But HOW much better is it?
This test isn't really done in a "correct" way. Think of it as a quick comparison from a photo shoot in beautiful nature.

The kit lens that I used in this comparison was not a good match for the D90. I'm absolutely sure that the D90 itself would have performed much better with a better lens. :)

I would have used a 17-55 2.8 i'm sure with this lens the D90 would have put the Z7 in difficulty...Also remember 45 mp vs. 12...😏

Thanks for the nice comparison. You cannot imagine how the gap is reduced if you use a lens like the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8. With the D90, the perfect couple.

of course, it's like a guitar amp with a better speaker! The big advantage of the D90 is: you get a good cam for little money (I paid 50$ for the body) and then you can invest in a better used lense...which still makes the whole package a bargain

The D90 did a fantastic job considering:
    1) 18-105 kit lens vs 24-70 & 70-200 lenses
    2) 12mp on an old crop sensor vs 45mp on a new FF sensor.
So I think the lesson here should be, this is not a comparison if the glass is not equal.

Despite the kit lens, I prefer the D90 images. Recently I've been using my D300 (same sensor as the D90) much more than my modern cameras, because I find the pictures more pleasing. I'll only regret this if I wish to make any really large prints (which I seldom do). On the screen I don't bother zooming into corners anymore, because pixel peeping is a complete waste of time.

Of course, there are many improvements in the new cameras, but the final result does not always show a significant difference. I also have a mirrorless camera, but I prefer my old Nikon D80/D300. All the buttons and dials are in place and the tank-like, solid feel is like nothing else.

That was fun! The D90 was my second Nikon camera. I had a Canon 10D, my first "real" digital camera. I traded it for a Nikon D60 and then went from that to the D90. I had so much fun shooting the little D90. It was a very well made camera that took excellent photos for the time.

@@ThomasRaskPhoto I am still using my D90. I didn't get it when it was first released so I think I've had it maybe 10 or 12 years at this point. It was my upgrade from a point and shoot. Well, I did have an old Nikon film camera (don't ask me what model/body.. I can't remember it was over 25 years ago) and even took a photography class where we learned dark room techniques. Sadly, that camera got damaged in a car accident. Anyway, my D90 has been a trusty companion over the years and while I'm still a complete amateur I've learned a lot with it. I'm still happy with the image quality of my D90 photos but the new mirrorless systems are whispering in my ear. Less weight, smaller body (at least with the Z7ii), live view, and of course all the other upgrades. The Z7ii might be my Christmas gift to myself. But it's nice to know the D90 still gets some love. • @jpdj2715
    @jpdj2715 11 місяців тому +3

Hi Thomas, that is as expected indeed. There are a few things to keep in mind.
    (1) When you look at a rendition of your raw images in, say, Lightroom Classic (LrC), then that is not “raw’, but the result of “raw processing”. In the case of LrC and Photoshop (Ps), it is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that does the actual raw processing. As a raw file consists of monochrome data elements that either represent a digital EV in red (R), or in green (G), or in blue (B), raw processing must convert each of these into RGB pixels. That process has boatloads of uncertainty and issues, but over the past decades has become a lot better with progressively better AI and with increasing resolution, uncertainty may become less. ACR has been improved too, but in details (noise, detail preservation or prevention of detail loss) it may underperform. When you open your raw files in LrC then LrC starts ACR as plug-in and ACR does the raw processing. ACR places that result into LrC’s workspace that is based on the ProPhoto colour space. But rendition on your display/monitor is converted to 8 bits per channel (R, G, and B as reach a channel in this jargon, so 8 bits per channel means 24 bots RGB). In my prejudice, ACR is nearer "quick and dirty" than "lean and mean" - but as we always need PS, it's what we use.
When we talk about resolution, we generally mean detail resolution, but with bit depth we discuss gradation resolution.
When ACR processes your image while you set LrC to Adobe Standard, then ACR uses a profile that tweaks the raw processing and colour rendition towards Adobe’s opinion of what should be a neutral image. The profile however is camera specific. In a Windows PC you’ll find it as follows: go to directory C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic\Resources\CameraProfiles\Adobe Standard\ and see that there are two versions for the Z 7: "Nikon Z 7 Adobe Standard v2.dcp" and "Nikon Z 7 Adobe Standard.dcp" (the Z 7ii has its own separate one) and the D90 has "Nikon D90 Adobe Standard.dcp" for profile.
If you go to the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera\Nikon Z 7\ then you’ll see the “Picture Profiles” that Adobe created to try to match Nikon’s original and v2 in camera profiles. For the D90, go to the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera\Nikon D90\ and you’ll see Standard, Neutral, Landscape, Portrait, Vivid, plus 3 profiles mimicking the D2X.
    (2) As the D90 is a 12MP camera, it likely has a “fuzzy filter” (my nickname for the Anti-Aliasing - AA - or optical low-pass filter). This filter was invented to make raw processing easier in the early days when compute power was expensive, big, heavy, and energy hungry. That fuzzy filter is no big deal under 24MP, but it reduces low light sensitivity, reduces colour space, reduces dynamic range, reduces contour sharpness, and increases vignetting. Coming up with a fuzzy filter that retains Leica optical quality of their old lens designs caused Leica to be the last to go “full frame” on their 24MP M cameras. Nikon Eliminated it from the D800E version of the D800 about 10 years ago.
My recurring rant with ACR is that Adobe took 10 years to start to adapt to this new reality and hence I needed to buy 3rd party software from DxO (PhotoLab or PureRAW) or Topaz (DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI) to visibly get the best results in large prints or when pixel peeping.
The noise in blurry and darker zones of the 45MP shots is simply put “failed raw processing”. ACR now has “AI Denoise” and applying this option makes for a lot better resulting image. For the best detail recovery we still need Topaz Gigapixel AI.
    (3) In line with (1) and (2) we now know that comparing images in LrC means we are comparing Adobe’s raw processing profiles in the first place. The D90 images having more vivid green simply is explained by this - at least for the most part.
    (4) For large prints, I try to upsample my images so as to get as close as possible to the print size in “dots” derived from the DPI applied to the print. Topaz Gigapixel AI (TGPAI) does a great job here and for images I tested, a lot better than LrC or Ps. Ps has two algorithms and these give different qualities. But can only go to 200% whereas TGPAI goes to max 32,000 on the long image side. This reflects my experience in the past 3 years or so and yesterday I found out that Ytoober Keith Cooper actually wrote about this on his Northlight Images website. The versions he used then are replaced now.
    (5) If in printing you want to go really big, then you could try multi-row panoramas with a Z 35, 50, or 85 prime lens. The Z 85/1.8S may be the sharpest lens out there. But for multi-row you need a 3D panorama head and then shoot with the lens rotating in its nodal point. For a single row you only need an Arca-compatible nodal slide rail if you already have an Arca compatible L-bracket or quick mount and an Arca compatible quick release on the tripod head. For depth of field you may need to focus-shift-shoot and focus-stack these before stitching the panorama. Upsampling a single image to 32,000 on the long side then gives about 680MP for a frame. Imagine a panorama stitched from 3 or 3*3 like that.
    (6) As to the Z 7, note that it has two “amplification levels” that it switches between near ISO 400. If you want low noise, shoot either in the 100-200 zone, or 400-800. And, again, note that most noise is failed raw processing in cases where the subject was in a light level in the camera’s “Contrast envelope” (the dynamic range available to a single shot). Where the camera switches to high amplification, the noise floor drops almost to 100 ISO again, so it is better at 400 than at almost 400.
    (7) Human perception of detail resolution and the effect of magnification follows “linear” lines, not “area” numbers. This is age old knowledge and the reason why we express detail resolution in LinePairs per millimetre - a length or linear unit. This contrasts megapixels that represent an area. People can be excited about the difference between 60 MP and 45.7 MP, assuming 60 is a lot better. But it is only marginally so. If you have a 6,000 * 4,000 = 24MP sensor and want to double or half its resolution (ignoring the fuzzy filter that actually is a big deal) then this is how linear works: doubling a sensor of X*Y=MP gives 2X*2Y=4MP and half means that X*Y=MP becomes 0.5X*0.5Y=0.25MP. In that sense, the Z 7 is almost twice as good as the D90, but because the fuzzy filter is gone, the Z 7 has much more contour sharpness provided that does not get ruined by ACR.

The comments say it all. The lens is the thing, not necessarily the body. I am sure the Z7 will wipe the floor of the D90 on the tests. But day to day, if you had a D90 only with good lenses, you would be fine. I don't have the newest currently. I think my Sony a6400 is the newest camera I have. I had a D90. I enjoyed very much. I think today for starting out, the D90 and all those F lenses you can use, and I mean all because of the pin drive on the lens mount on the D90, you would do very well. It might be on the very extreme instances you might want say a Z7. Allot more money though. I buy used or open box. Never new. I bought a Tamron zoom for $35.00 used, and love that lens. My big guns are the Canon 1DX, and 1D mk.4. Both incredible cameras. For the price or less than a new APS-C, I got each of these used that are like new, plenty of life left in them. These are pro bodies, made to take it. My Sony a7 mk.2 and a7Rii get it done without costing a fortune either.
I also adapted EF Canon glass for my Sonys. Keeps costs low, and makes it a 1 lens system. MPB.COM, and Used Photo Pros is where I get most of my gear. Authorized Dealers, warranty, and selection, especially MPB. You would be amazed what you can get for almost nothing. People want new. Their reasons. So I buy their older stuff. Works out well.

I’have a d90 since 2011, it’s still a great camera, the real big difference with new mirrorless camera is the autofocus capabiltiy, but for still or low moving subjects is still great. In my opinion in photography 70% is the brain, 25% is the Lens and 5% is the camera.

If you want do pictures family or so, then D90 is very good choice for the money, special with 50mm f1,4 objective give you nice soft looking pictures. But it depends also on your art skills.

  • @Bike_Lion
    @Bike_Lion 3 місяці тому

It would have been interesting to see more of an "apples to apples" comparison - the D90 with equivalent quality glass, rather than the kit lens. There are a huge number of good quality lenses that will work with the D90, including all of the Nikon-compatible full frame DSLR and (35mm) film SLR lenses. I'm not sure if they have a reverse adapter to use the Z lenses on DSLRs, but there really isn't a need for that, since there are so many lenses that fit with it, and someone buying an older model like the D90 will probably be getting mostly older used lenses anyway.
One small nitpick with the conclusion: I would say that with the D90 (& ideally good lenses), one can actually make very good prints. The higher megapixel count of newer cameras is of course an advantage if you want to crop out a smaller area of the picture and print it large. But for standard size prints (around 4x6 inches or 10x15cm) of the whole picture, the D90 with a decent lens is gonna be plenty.....And actually arguably for much larger prints too, since typically the larger the print is, the farther away it's viewed from.
But yeah, there are certainly useful features with the newer mirrorless cameras that photographers to take advantage of to improve their results in a number of situations. I still like the D90 though because it gets great shots, and since it's so cheap these days, I don't have to worry too much about it potentially getting damaged when I'm tramping through the forest 🙂

Cool video. Was great to see a bit of the nature there in Sweden 🙂
BTW - That plant actually isn't called "clover" in English....In German it's called "Sauerklee" ("sour clover"), and it sounds like the Swedish name is similar, but in English it's called "wood sorrel." My kids and I like to eat it, as it has a nice sour flavor, a bit like lemon.

@@ThomasRaskPhoto - Your English is pretty good. As someone who's learned a couple foreign languages though, one thing I've noticed is that even if I think I've learned the language pretty well, there will still sometimes inevitably be certain topics that I just haven't discussed in that language, so I won't know some of the words.

Сейчас 2023 год. Просто по приколу купил себе данную камеру. Короче, это "Dark side of the moon" на виниле...

Well, i had been led to believe the human eye sees to sbout 30 to 35 mega pixel so anything above is a waste unless you blowing up pictures above the size of wall art or bill boards, and if you are doing that then you should be using a hasselblad 🤷‍♂️.
There are so many vidios out there trying to compare a 20 year old D90 trailblazer, im still using mine, first of all i cant see the point in wasting money on this new expensive kit just for a part-time hobby, and secondly i haven got that kind of disposable income, and Thirdly i came from the world of 35mm film and still prefer it.
So my conclusion is no you dont need the best camera gear. Thanks for a good vidio.

No piękne porównanie, gdyby jeszcze porównać d90 12mp do z7 12mp (można to włączyć w manu mniejszą ilość pikseli) ale i tak dobrze widać d90 to król, szkoda że w menu z7 nie włączyłeś mniejszej ilości pikseli to porównanie miało by sens. Teraz widać że jak wyciągnę mój smartfon i z7 to telefonem zrobię lepsze zdjęcie bo ma więcej pikseli i będzie ważna liczba pikseli podczas powiększenia zdjęcia. I jeszcze obiektywy jeden za 5 dolarów drogi 500 dolarów to słabe porównanie.

    • @mariusz7213

Well, a beautiful comparison, if you compare the d90 12mp to the z7 12mp (you can turn it on with a smaller number of pixels in the menu), but you can still clearly see the d90 is the king, it's a pity that you didn't turn on a smaller number of pixels in the z7 menu, the comparison would make sense. Now you can see that if I take out my smartphone and the Z7, I will take a better photo with the phone because it has more pixels and the number of pixels will be important when enlarging the photo. And also lenses for $5, expensive for $500 are a poor comparison.

Но даже при таком тесте разница не сильно видна

The D90 was a good camera, I purchased it new and had it for about three years.

Bang for your buck, the D90 is a better option for an everyday shutterbug.
I paid less than the lens you were using on your Z7 for my entire kit of D90 with the two kit lenses and a 35mm f1.8 prime...
Pixel peeping isn't an artistic expression in photography - opinion.
