This was super comprehensive and helpful! I’m just now learning about how to make zines (even though I’ve known about them for years), so I love seeing different people’s processes. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the tutorial man. Back in highschool I made a children's book for a teacher with indesign and photoshop and this video is a good refresher. I'm gonna get into making zines because I miss those days ;-;
Thank you so much for this. I'm just about to be finished with my first Zine and this comprehensive guide is so great, including tons of information that I haven't found elsewhere/even though of. You're a professional Zine maker and you're greatly appreciated.
Can I just say I adore you? You're so genuine and funny. You made this an amusing watch. As a writer alone, printers are my better buddy and worst arch nemesis, as an artist I've had a small amount of experience with them but enough to realize they're evil 🤣 Seriously, though. Informative and helpful af.
I delight in seeing these small books and the new wonderful name it is called. "ZINE" I taught kindergarten, first grade and second grade. This paper book was my "go to" since 1984 and REIRED 2004 to help children learn all subjects, create their own writing on and on . I love what you have done. It is not easy to write a creative story in only 6 pages.
Thank you so much I’ve been trying to make a comic for around two years now and had no idea where to start. The story is finished but not fully fleshed out. However, my character concepts are complete with backstories and everything and I would LOVE to create mini zines for their lores 🤩 so thank you so much for introducing me to a new idea :)
Just discovered zines and I am intrigued. Found your video this evening and I must say, you explained everything in perfect detail for anyone who is interested in starting one. Brilliant job! Thanks so much post making this video. It will come in handy. Wishing you loads of success. Best from Germany!
Just wanted to leave the comment that your video is top-shelf quality! Nice organization and presentation. Seriously- nice job and thanks for sharing the knowledge!
im late! but the blue card is a bondo card! you can usually find those in aisles where bondo for car repairs and window tint is at! or sometimes even home repair!
I’m definitely using that zig zag method, I work in procreate so I’ve had to do a bit of guess work and irl plotting to get my printing right. Is there an adaption for the zig zag method for the quarter sized zine since it’s 8 pages double sided per each 8x11 sheet?
Whenever I print a quarter size zine I use the same zig zag pattern to arrange the pages, but only use the top of the paper. Once it’s all in order I copy paste the pages to the bottom of the page too. Then you can print 2 zines at once, not waste any paper, and only need to make one cut!
Thanks for all the information, I've just discovered this world and I'm really enjoying making some, especially the small format. I managed to make a python script to automatically arrange an eight-page PDF file but I have some problems with the printer, the border issue as you mentioned yourself. In the next few days I'll try to go to the copy shop to see if it's possible to solve the issue, otherwise I could buy a printer with toner.

Thank you for putting it all up together, very useful and helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. I use affinity publisher (basically the same as inDesign) for my printing but I can't find how to print 1/4 letter format. My brain is breaking. Do you know?
The zizagging for pagination / using pdf acrobat to auto-paginate for booklet printing .... doesnt all that exporting/importing between indesign and acrobat reduce the quality of the print?
I might have missed it towards the end ( need sleep) how many pages can a 5x8 zine be to still be under one ounce in your opinion. never thought a forever stamp could do the trick. thanks for the video, bookmarked for future viewing
Yeah, I use 20 lb printer paper for the mailing club bc it’s the lightest (helps w shipping), but if mail weight isn’t an issue 65 lb+ is good cover stock
You can use any paper for zines! I usually use regular printer paper, but for the mailing club I print on 20 lb paper since it's the least heavy to mail
I contacted the author, who was very happy to hear someone wanted to read it! They don't sell it anywhere rn but if you dm me your email I can send you a readable pdf :)
@@michaeljohnson4932 i know i'm late but i was wondering if i could get my hands on the PDF too, the zine looked really interesting and i was let down when google searches only yielded sport related results.
This was great! Subscribed . All seemed too complicated before this video, I think I’ll start with some mini’ , do you have any mini zines for sale? I’d like to get some for inspiration . Brilliant video very in-depth and very naturally delivered (surprised don’t have more subscribers - I expect more will find you soon! ) ☺️🥰
Since I made this vid I closed my Etsy to focus on the Wiggle Bird Mailing Club! You can check out my zines via the patreon i mention at the beginning :)
OH MY GOD! Thank you for this video. Your gentle walkthrough that process helps me with my first zine.
The zig-zag trick for pagination is not one I've ever seen before and is very useful; thank you.
Been making zines for ten years and yet this video was still so helpful! Thank you for posting this.

Good point about the cover being a different colour so it can be printed separately!
