This project is a study of art as context. I take a common, readily understood action like brushing teeth and attempt to transmute it into art by changing it’s context. Specifically, I vary the location the action performed and the organisms (plants and people) around me which perceive my act, and I reflect on our effects on each other.
Taking one step further, the context you are viewing this within is youtube, and you are aware you are watching documentation.
Did this action become art? I think it did, but what do you think?
Although my conclusions at this stage are limited by my small sample size, I'd have to say that plants and people don't seem very bothered at all by my out of context action. Hardly more so than my bathroom mirror or shower curtain. Jimmy Johns orders and traffic flow went on as usual. Plants continued to grow. However, if I'd been less cautious, who knows if I could still say that.

very useful information. thanks
Thanks for all the information, I've just discovered this world and I'm really enjoying making some, especially the small format. I managed to make a python script to automatically arrange an eight-page PDF file but I have some problems with the printer, the border issue as you mentioned yourself. In the next few days I'll try to go to the copy shop to see if it's possible to solve the issue, otherwise I could buy a printer with toner.
Yo I picked up putty pygmalion by Lonnie Garcia and when I heard about the wigglebird mailing club I knew that sounded familiar! You seem dope!
Thank you so much for this video. I use affinity publisher (basically the same as inDesign) for my printing but I can't find how to print 1/4 letter format. My brain is breaking. Do you know?
OH MY GOD! Thank you for this video. Your gentle walkthrough that process helps me with my first zine.
Are you heterophobic?
Printer - brother hl-l2315d or equivalent. Prints both sides of paper. Wifi. Used toner cartridge. About $100. I love it
amazing! can't believe such a well rounded complete video exists! much thanks and love!
Thank you so much for all the information, planning, and time you put into this resource!
Brother you are awesome, the piercings look so sick !!!
This is a really excellent presentation, thank you! And thx also for the lead on LGBTQIA 'zines as well.
I’m definitely using that zig zag method, I work in procreate so I’ve had to do a bit of guess work and irl plotting to get my printing right. Is there an adaption for the zig zag method for the quarter sized zine since it’s 8 pages double sided per each 8x11 sheet?
Whenever I print a quarter size zine I use the same zig zag pattern to arrange the pages, but only use the top of the paper. Once it’s all in order I copy paste the pages to the bottom of the page too. Then you can print 2 zines at once, not waste any paper, and only need to make one cut!
@@michaeljohnson4932 thank you! I’ll give that a try and update with my results! :D
Great video, thanks
This is super useful, thank you Michael!
This was SUPER informative!!! Great video, man!
possibly the most helpful video in the world
This is gold. Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Thank you for putting it all up together, very useful and helpful!
The zizagging for pagination / using pdf acrobat to auto-paginate for booklet printing .... doesnt all that exporting/importing between indesign and acrobat reduce the quality of the print?
Not that I've noticed!
@@michaeljohnson4932 clear enough to me :) thanks for your work!
super amazing video!!! thank you, i never thought about using indesign until now for zinemaking
My thing is I have an outdated laptop. 😭
This was so helpful thank you so much ❤
I delight in seeing these small books and the new wonderful name it is called. "ZINE" I taught kindergarten, first grade and second grade. This paper book was my "go to" since 1984 and REIRED 2004 to help children learn all subjects, create their own writing on and on . I love what you have done. It is not easy to write a creative story in only 6 pages.
lol, 2cents black and white. i work at officeworks in South Australia ours is 20cents black and white for a4 and 75cents colour lol per side.
yeah, I haven't seen those prices since I did my printing at public libraries lol I'm always hoping to see them again tho
hey thank u for making this!! been working on a zine and it's taken 12 years off my life but this was super helpful!!
You have very cool eyes. Intense.
Thankyou so much for generously sharing this info
If you can afford it/if you have the know how: Try to go the Linux route for printers. Windows is so assbackwards for printer compatibility and most printer problems come down to that. Really, there is no reason for Windows to have such shitty compatibility. Edit: oh fuck. Okay. You have IOS. I have no idea how iOS and printers work together. Trying to setup a VM or a raspberry pi for printing still might be a decent idea to try and fix printer kinks.
Really cool video!
Love this! Thank you so much for teaching us <3
Good point about the cover being a different colour so it can be printed separately!
thanks so much for this!! what paper do you use for zines?
You can use any paper for zines! I usually use regular printer paper, but for the mailing club I print on 20 lb paper since it's the least heavy to mail
This was super comprehensive and helpful! I’m just now learning about how to make zines (even though I’ve known about them for years), so I love seeing different people’s processes. Thank you!
Very cool video! The information is presented is super helpful, thank you.
Very nice.
Just wanted to leave the comment that your video is top-shelf quality! Nice organization and presentation. Seriously- nice job and thanks for sharing the knowledge!

im late! but the blue card is a bondo card! you can usually find those in aisles where bondo for car repairs and window tint is at! or sometimes even home repair!
"Fold it hotdog-wise" is a phrase that I simply have to steal, so I hope you don't mind!
Thank you so much for this. I'm just about to be finished with my first Zine and this comprehensive guide is so great, including tons of information that I haven't found elsewhere/even though of. You're a professional Zine maker and you're greatly appreciated.
