Market dynamics. Mainstreamers love small crossovers over sedans as a 'one-stop solution' to all their known dilemmas. Sucks that most brands are actively ditching sedans and fun hatchbacks for lame crossovers.
Idk what you’re talking about the Mitsubishi Mirage is the pinnacle of automotive driving experiences
We have to remember that Mitsubishi are not in a good spot right now. They need to make their best to make cars that people would buy, therefore, they had to ditch the cars like evo, etc. Making crossovers and in quote “boring cars” might be Mitsubishi’s last chance to stay relevant in the industry
Mitsubishi: They cancelled the Evo because it didn't fit in their product portfolio...
Also Mitsubishi: Here's the Mirage
My buddies brother just got a couple year old mirage and what a shit box lol feels like it's from 1992

The mirage makes sense though, it’s a cheap mass market car for people that need something with wheels that can go from point A to B.

Mitsubishi: It.... It.... It has a cup holder in the middle...
People: And?

Yup
Shitting on the car? Doug takes an objective look at every car. If he's shitting on something then objectively, it's shit.
My brother had a older evo. At that time we worked together. I always had to pick him up. Even when it was running he was scared to drive it. Stupid fast though
Doug seems to genuinely DESPISE Mitsibishi, the way he usually speaks of their cars. :D
Agree
Doug's the kind of guy to point out the weird windshield washer fluid location but never show the quirks of filling it.
Yea man. I have a dedicated fluid transfer pump for that.
lol, keep the " Doug is the type of guy" jokes coming
That’s a good point, I haven’t yet to put fluid in mine but now that u mention it, it will be a challenge when the time comes
Larry N Doug's the kind of guy to give chewing gum a Doug Score. 0 for value, depreciates immediately when used.
@@mazyoda_ The rear seats do not fold and there is no access to the trunk from the rear seat/cabin. You just remove the plastic cover, take the cap off and fill. You can get a regular bottle of water in there, but a gallon jug or similar would be messy. A fluid pump or even a hose with a funnel also works. Or even straight from your garden hose if your water isn't too hard. Hope this helps :-)
The end of the Evo??" You mean the end of Mitsubishi in general.
@A real bisexual petrol-head ???
@A real bisexual petrol-head you good bro??
Yes, because people didn't buy them.
Because as with all other things, you guys arn't doing the things, you said you would.
Seriously, you guys have had every chance to save the performance car, but nope, all you do is sit around and complain, all the while doing nothing..
i don't know, Mitsubishi is a good brand, i love it. Just cause merican's don't buy it, doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't.
@@Orcawhale1 Lol your argument sounds like "You wouldn't have gotten raped if you didn't dress like a whore!"....Mitsubishi is ultimately to blame because they couldn't keep up with their competition. They offered an inferior car because they stopped giving a shit. Everyone's money went toward better alternatives.

Mitsubishi: Haha Mirage go brrrr
What if they made an "Evolution" variant of the Mirage or something close to it? I mean, the Lancer was pretty much a decent daily driver until Mitsubishi had the balls to turn it into a rally car that would give birth to the rivalry against Subaru's WRX STi. Though, the Mirage right now isn't well known for performance and it hasn't been justified whether it is worthy of a performance version so nevermind, forget what I said completely.

@Mahbub Z Rohan I own a regular old Lancer and when I got an ad for that thing in the mail from my trader I felt a bit sad for a colleague who was still driving his old Eclipse.
I bet in 10 years, doug will still look and talk the same
ua-cam.com/video/x1NBazan9Ug/v-deo.html
Except the THISSS gets its own ad break because it's become so long.
Maybe he will get bald.
meaning his age will just catch up to his looks
He is timeless and his lines have aged rather well I would say.
I have a theory: Mitsu’s cancellation of the Evo is the reason why Subaru never bothered to update and upgrade the WRX and STI all these years. With no real competition, Subaru had no real incentive to make those cars better. So maybe we’ll see if Subaru revises the WRX/STI for 2021, which they were suppose to do this year.
And Subaru will probably turn the STI into some quirky turbo/hybrid electric drive.
Subaru will probably update the WRX to compete with other cheap economy cars like the type R and hot hatches like the Focus RS.... but it’s a damn shame the Evo was killed. It was truly a better car than the WRX (although the WRX was always better looking on the exterior and interior imo
Cameron Peralta disagree on the exterior appearance. it's kind of a wash on the earlier editions imo but I prefer the front fascia of the evo x to any of the subarus
Agreed
To be completely honest with you I kinda feel like that's why they started making the BRZ with toyota.
I think they’re discontinuing the STI in Europe and just keeping the WRX.
What? I thought the STI was getting a new engine and re design next year??

“EVERY SINGLE EVO ON THE PLANET HAS BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE"

Doug must be the MOST WELL TRAVELED MAN, IN HISTORY, check those Air miles, Dougie
I only changed my brakes. Does that mean mine is already modified? I have the MR version.
Ya'll are literally taking him way too literal.
Not really, i have two Evo X's my self, not one is modified. Plus 4 of my friends have one as well and none is modified, all of them full original.
Not too mention that if someone wants to mod their car, then that's their business. I love Doug for the most part but I really don't appreciate how he hates on the modding community. We're not all 17 year old kids with a wing the size of a paraglider and a 30 gallon garbage can for an exhaust tip.
The downfall of Mitsubishi began after cancelling the evo
Seriously, it was one of the only things they ever made that was actually interesting and that anybody aspired to own. Nobody today gets excited over their boring crossovers, which by the way I almost never see on the road.
They've been in a freefall since the mid 2000's. Canceling the EVO was just another example on how out of touch they are with their customers.
Nah the downfall began when they didn’t put the 4G63T in the EVO X
Unfortunately car companies don’t make money because people think a car is cool. Mitsubishi has actually been on an upswing since getting rid of the Evo. I’m one of the loyal customers that keeps buying from them in hopes that there comes a time when they could afford to have a flagship car again. Personally, I’m a fan of their electric concept Evo. So yea
The downfall happened after disbanding from Chrysler, that's when their resources became limited and affected their cars.
Should have stayed with Chrysler a little longer before disbanding, we could still have the Eclipse and the Evolution. Ironically, Mitsubishi is in an alliance with FCA/Stellartis again.
I like when badging is limited, making it less of a status thing and one has to know what to look for to see it. Keep in mind also, with fewer options comes less weight.
Well, they may know, since there’s a giant wing in the back
OEM+ just how i like it, subtle upgrades, still really clean.

Regarding body roll, remember this is a RALLY car - meaning, an OFF PAVEMENT racing car. The suspension needs to have travel, and it needs to be able to move, to deal with bumps, ruts, uneven ground, and of course jumps. Obviously in stock form it's not competition ready, but those are its bones. Sure you can tune it for flatter cornering as a street car, and I guess that's what most people do, but that will make it worse, not better, for its designed use. Its all-road capabilities should at least be appreciated.
Yep if you ever get a chance to rip some corners in the gravel mode do it! It was honestly incredible the best vehicle I have ever driven and it was my cousins haha

What I always heard was the 8 and 9 came with a 5 spd or optional 6 spd. They both used the same housing just the 6 spd had that extra gear. Because of that extra gear it took up more room and the gears weren't as strong as the 5 spd. There are people with Evo 8 and 9 who would swap the 6spd for the 5.
Gives an Evo X a handling score of 6/10...meanwhile, actual drivers like Jeremy Clarkson calls the 10 one of the best handling cars of all time. Gotta take these reviews with a grain of salt I guess lol.
I think he was looking for old lady Galaxie 500 handling there.
He expects the Evo to be some sort of exotic car lmao
@@brolydbs1927 well, 10/10 IS an exotic car handling’s score. An exotic car getting a 10 and an Evo getting a 10 would make 0 sense, because the exotic obviously handles better and therefore, Evo is a 6

When he said 30 years ago, I was expecting 70's. Guess I've grown old.
one thing I really like about doug is that he's aware of the fact that even about 200HP is legitimately a fast car. he's real about speed.
I still think Lancer Evolution VIII MR is the pinnacle of the Evo series, it’s better than any STi ever.
100% correct*
I'm a die-hard EVO fanboy and in the US i agree completely BUT the GC8 STI is better than the mitsubishi's we got in the US. Having said that The EVO V and VI are better than the GC8. They just got fat by the time they came to the US. I own an VIII but really want to get a V or VI also once they hit the US.
Sorry, a MIVEC IX is the pinnacle.
I used to own a 2006 EVO IX GSR bought brand new over a decade ago. It was a fun car to drive even though mine was a 5-speed and easy to mod. Now I drive a 2019 STI.
Robert Young they look the best in my opinion too. I love those massive wings
Driven three generation STI's then took a evo x out and i couldn't believe all the internet back and forth about that comparison....the evo is much better stock vs stock
Maybe better on the track. Not a better car all around.
@@AvatarPuls that's true. I'm an Evo fan but I prefer earlier models than the Evo x. Mitsubishi tried to make a car balance both sides too much, that is why the evo x failed. This is also happening to the newer subaru's
The problem they had that also Subaru’s are running into is that they are trying to get into the sport luxury market. Sorry but Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac CTS V, Audi already got that market locked down. They started charging as much as those brands and didn’t even come close to the luxury of those companies.
@@monmc6129 I'd say that Mitsubishi tried to make the Evo x towards their new plans which ultimately failed. Y know like with switching to crossovers and shit. It overall balanced more on the user friendly side. They could've made it better but they didn't have the money and you know they pushed it out only to make more money than anything else
@@AvatarPuls No better all around. More reliable, can push out WAY more torque, bulletproof engine that can take mods (STI's engine is a joke, even stock ones had problems). Not to mention yaw control and torque vectoring were invented by Mitsubishi during the earlier Evo development. Ive seen so many STIs burn up after pitiful amount of miles, not the Evo though.
And lets be honest: both cars were made to mod for rally, so comparing stock is useless. Modded STIs, while great in many aspects, need a helluva lot more mods to be effective and reliable, especially when it comes to the motor. The STI motor (comparing EVO X to the STI of that year of course) was simply built like a tin can. They couldnt take mods. First users were pissed off on the forums, took a few years for aftermarket to make upgraded rods and pistons to make the STI motor able to take any increase in torque.
But they are different cars. STI is lighter, EVO feels heavy like a German car. But honestly, point for point the EVO is just better, and it was more expensive so go figure.
Hey look! A stock evo X.
Oh really? Where?
Nope. Too late
The Evo was SO much ahead of its time. The rival makers have started keeping up with it some 5 years ago. And yes, the EVO wasn't a flashy car Doug, it was all about the performance without all the bells and whistles.
“Thhhhhisss is a (car year) (car name)” will go down as one of the best intros in you tube history. 👍👍
well some people just don't want their car to scream, "I'm special!" because they know they don't need to prove it just because they can. They just paid for the, you know, performance....
Mitsubishi put only 2 badges because they’re cheap, not because they think people don’t need to “show off” their Evo.
I had a (slightly modified) 1986 Buick Regal T-Type. Used to have a lot of fun with it. Every drive was stress-relief. Got into informal street races... every chance I got. Cops never even glanced at it, even when the brakes were probably glowing from trying to get down to a reasonably sane speed after the radar detector went off (they pulled over whichever vehicle I happened to be racing, several times). Only negative about it was that it cornered just slightly better than the Great Pyramid of Giza - but the roads around here are kind of skinny, and cars aren't frogs, so that wasn't really a problem. LMAO.
The value confuses me: holds value really well, very well priced. What car has ever gotten a 10 on value?
One he hasn't reviewed yet, LOL!
He rarely gives anything a value over 7. But I'm not sure if he's ever reviewed a C5 or C6 Vette yet...those are good cars for dirt cheap. Cars that are priced low as they will ever be now and are on their way up as being collectable get a higher value...like how early 90s Japanese sports cars were several years back...but now they are becoming a bit overpriced and their value is questionable.
Pex_the_Unalive Drunk actually, he reviewed a c5 z06, and if I’m not mistaken, he gave that car a 10 in value
I bought a ralliart wagon for 9 grand, evo tuned theyre worth about 30k
His Ford GT, maybe. It'll probably sell for at least as much as he paid for the thing unless he manages to total it.
@Dimetri Drossos "...less than $35,000 for the complete kit, plus..." You forgot to factor in labor. Or is your (many, many, many hours of) labor worth nothing, lol?
Everything you said before the 17 minute mark is true and works in my favor. It keeps the casual people away from this car, which is already rare to begin with. Many people will track or do performance driving with these cars, which is the way it should be. Sure, you can modify for show/looks, but as you mentioned, there is only so much you can do with a Lancer interior before it gets old/boring. No need to find an 8/9, the interior is even worse and don't even start talking about safety lol. I own a modded 9 and use it primarily for autocross or quick weekend drives to keep things moving. If I had to drive this thing every day, I would kill myself. At the same time, I would not sell it for anything, it really is that great.

As an Evo X owner, watching and hearing the trunk slam closed at 14:12 hurt my feels
Yeah once my dad closed my trunk like That I’m like dad why’d you do that look at the spoiler it’s heavy 😂😂
He looks at it as a Reg Lancer smh this guy is a Outback lover
Ya you can see it coming and it's the worst sound...
I think it’s the lack of built quality…
@@jonlosito2004 The wing just weights too much for the shocks of the trunk.
I feel like he has forgotten to mention that the chassis is NOT at all the same what you get in a regular lancer, down to the metal composistion.
'composition' tho.
Valid point regardless.
The EVO X wasn't just the end of Mitsubishi, but it was an end of an era
The last Evo until the Lancer is inevitably brought back as a fucking crossover. They already did it to the Eclipse!
Doug: i love the subtle design changes that mercedes does to high performance car, so only car people will know what they're seeing
Also Doug: mitsubishi is being cheap by not putting on more badges and making the evo stand out
BOX Flares! I mean seriously!!
6/10 for handling, tested in traffic. ok Doug...
He can't drive it right, that's why he hates it, lol
My 14 GSR handles ALMOST as good as my C7. This dude is smoking crack. Ill run this on a track against any 4 door thats the reason why I purchased a GSR ffs..... Thats disappointing 6/10 😂😂😂 whatever.
@@baileypawsplays1047 that's because c7s handle like shit
Its just his opinion and he does this for pretty much all cars. Has a good look, takes them for a spin, nothing fancy or hard driving, gives a score. I dont even watch the score anymore. Sorry doug.
14:10 - Could that have slammed any harder lol
Yes. It’s possible. I cringe every time.
That's how it does close 😅😅
Yeah the Lancer trunk slams with force. Has something to do with the hydraulics used.
That was so cartoonish 😂
😅... Here wanted to express its rigidity..😂
I own my evo x for many many years now/ Although i agree with lack of "quality of life" features and overall budget feel of many things, i think you underestimeted how well this car handles. It definitely has more of a "mechanical" feel to it than modern cars that feel more "electric", but the connection with the car and how this car makes you feel is unbelievable. Ive made mine 410 bhp.
“Badges .... badges ... we don’t need no stink in’ badges”.
IF you know, then you know...
lancer! leave that badge alone
lol doug complianed about too much badging. when there isnt alot of badges he complains, well wtf do you want man.(if you ever watched his h2 hummer review)
The end of EVO is the worst that ever happened to Subaru.
Actually it performs better than any time before. However looks like shit
@@michaelvovchuk2152 It looks like shit, it's heavier, and the only real improvement is the slightly updated suspension, but that was rather a fault with the prior gen, rather than all old STIs. The hawkeye and blobeye were amazing, and for their time comparison better than the current gen.
@RICKY I actually really like new STI and WRX. They are last of its ok kind after Focus RS AWD was cancelled. Rugged compact car with manual transmission and reasonable performance. I also very like design of current STI. However it is sad that they become more refined but not more powerful over the years. Hopefully new STI is rumored to have 400hp, but tuners claims that on exhaust+turbo+ecu they achieve 500+hp from FA24, currently used only in family suv. I would love to see new EVO but I doubt it will happen soon, as Mitsubishi gave up on european market and they are limiting their line up once again. And that is really sad. Rivalry between Evo and Sti was since beggining important part of these cars. They were extremely close in cost, performance and features. Remember that both cars share the same origin: they were small, light packages for tech from bigger rally sedans: Legacy RS and Galant VR4. There were generations in which STi was better, there were generations when Evo was better, but they were always comparable.
@@gameboyterrorysta6307 The FA24 has been used in the Legacy XT.
While it's not as sporty as some of it's predecessors (Legacy GT), I wouldn't call it a "family SUV".
You mean best thing because the EVO was the only car that handed Subaru’s ass to it.
If Mitsubishi needs to be survived, they *SHOULD* bring back the Lancer Evolution.
Not just the evo, Mitsubishi also need to bring back the Eclipse and 3000GT
They'd just badge a midsize crossover. Just like the eclipse
Sadly Mitsubishi is now dead, almost bankrupt and part of the Renault-Nissan ("Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi" now) alliance. Do not ever expect them to be making a sports or niche car - only cheap and practical crossovers for developing countries
they wont/ cant, not enough $$ and big daddy Nissan will never let em
@@maximuscetell639 No...wonder... Why does Nissan never let them do it!? Nissan have brought back the Fairlady Z, why won't they give Mitsubishi a chance!?
doug undervalued the evo as usual... the s-awc is so advanced, audi didn't have that unlimited torque vectoring until 2017 and had to pay for an r8 to get it. the heart of the evo is s-awc and is what separates this from the pack.
See you in 3 years when this is in your recommended!
It probably wont though

urriah aguilera I fell ya, it was the same for me I barely noticed that until yesterday myself😂
Easter egg found!
I’m all about manuals, but the duel clutch “fits the character” of the EVO much more imo.
1) All rally cars have flappy paddle gear boxes.
2) This was one of the first attainable duel clutch transmissions.
3) With things like electronic diffs and sophisticated traction control systems, it was intended to take on super cars that cost way more (and it did). The EVO was never intended to feel like an “analogue drivers car” but an affordable “supercar/track tool”.
4) I remember reading a an interview with the lead designer, he had to fight tooth and nail with execs for the budget to develop the DCT and implored anybody buying one to try the DCT first. This was his baby and the DCT was his crown jewel.
In a time where buying a performance car without a stick was laughed at (considered self castration and a relinquishment of your manhood) this was a bold move to come out and suggest that customers go with a DCT. For many including myself this is the car that brought the DCT to the mainstream.
