This Video is a Gem to watch and hear the harmonizing and Carl's voice is so heavenly and beautiful ~ Love the Beach Boys and their sweet music ~ Brian is missing here : (
i agree with you. but... by 64 carl had been in the band for 2.5 years... he was 18 in 64... its testament to brian's Genius that he outshines all of these other amazing musicians... and he remains an enigma that is nearly impossible to fathom... they were all very lucky and hardworking as well as talented. Brian is still the MAN!

Brian gets all the credit for being a "genius" and all that.... but actually, Carl was the guy who kept the act going for 30 years after Brian stopped touring (I was at one of his first no-shows: 4th of July 1965 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco). Brian was their producer/songwriter up until about 1970... Well, who wrote all the hits they had after that? Would Brian's work still have shined the way it did if Carl hadn't kept pushing it out there for all those years after? I think not.
Would Brian even been able to do what he did if not for easy access to the talent in their group? My point is that he wasn't the only great thing about the band. I heard Carl play when he was way WAY young... like 1964... he was what? 13?... playing licks done on the singles by players like Barney Kessel and Glen Campbell pretty flawlessly and doing Brian's singing parts many times. The Beach Boys had an incredible amount of talent... not just Brian, but all of them.
@MattHatter The Smile Sessions will be available as a standard double CD or download and as an elaborate deluxe box set which will include four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles and a 60-page hardbound book written by Beach Boys historian Domenic Priore. (according to "Direct Current" 'Know Better Music' Aug. 9, 2011).
Sorry, but this is not completely lipsynched. They are simply singing along with the recording, which was a common practice in those afternoon talk shows. Mostly the record track is what we hear here ( you'r right), but you can also hear notes sung that are not in sync with the recording. I know this recording inside out, and this is partially live. It is what it is. Not completely live, but not completely lip synced either
See Mike Douglas was predicting the future as they did eventually show up as bonus tracks on the CD reissue. Forget Nostradamus when there's Mike Douglas!!!
This was aired one month and 4 days before Charlie Manson sent his goons tokill everyone at Melcher's old house. Manson was pissed that on this album they used one of his songs"Cease to Exist" which they changed to "Never Learn Not to Love" Terry Melcher was introduced to Manson thru Dennis Wilson--he was a music producer--who showed an initial interest in manson's tunes but never promised to record him. I heard Charlie watched this at Spahn Ranch and was murderously mad.
Ha ha ha!! I thought just the same! (see an alternative video for this song here, Mike does the same there) They should have given him maracas or tambourine to do some more serious work :P At least he doesn't look like a Karl Marx wannabe here! Love Carl and Bruce! (I'm not really a Mike hater, but I do enjoy making fun of him)
Would Carl have had a job for 30 years if he/they hadn't had those hits to sing? Let's be reasonable here... I love Carl's voice, and I love the records they made from '68-71... but the majority of their following is the result of what happened in the "classic era".
Yeah, what was up with his having a beard for the last 25 years of his life? I look at this young guy and although the voice is the same, he looks totally different from the Carl I remember.
Manson undoubtedly and sadly did influence the Beach Boys... they used one of his songs, then Dennis and Probably Brian as well both had problems because of what Manson did... Just as Manson "influenced" Terry Melcher to go into hiding, hire a bodyguard and be forced to seek psychiatric help to cope with the fear... Manson is a sad con man but its a sad statement that alot of people in society believe charles manson is a "wise man" or someone to look up to...
who's that 50 year old dude on the far left at the beginning? are there auditions to replace him? sign me up, I'd love to sing with that group, MIKE YOU DONT DESERVE TO BE WITH THEM, and for you to TAKE the "Beach Boys" name?!?! shame on you.
A beautiful performance by a young Carl - his singing AND speaking voice make me melt - love it!

Mike Douglas did an excellent interview, allowing the Beach Boys to make intelligent and interesting comments.

Murry wrote the lyrics and Brian did the music to Break Away. Murry had the idea for Joey Bishop the talk show host - he used to say let's break away.
"Here is the Beach Boys' new album called '20/20.' And now, here they are to sing two songs for you that aren't on it."

Kinda fun that the director needed a few seconds to notice that Al, not Carl, was singing lead on the chorus.
i miss you,,,carl,,
mrsoul856 Dennis is on the drums but partially hidden behind the others
@relimes "found out it was in my head", I love the way they seemed to give him lyrics that'd pee him off.
i didn't love this song until i saw this performance
I just got friends/20/20 one cd. 29 songs and it's great!

This must be one of Mike Love's last pre-hat performances.
The leads are live for sure. Play the the original recording.

WHERE IS BRIAN ?! D:
Omg! Carl
Carl is so cute. I wish he never grew the beard b/c he covered up that cute face :)
It's funny that they sang "Breakaway" which wasn't on the 20/20 album.
See Mike Douglas was predicting the future as they did eventually show up as bonus tracks on the CD reissue. Forget Nostradamus when there's Mike Douglas!!!
As well as the last pre-beard Carl performance.
what is mike loves role in this song besides dancing like hes at an old lady polka?
i agree

@relimes Dude! He's doing the bass voice! The dancing and stage persona weren't their speciality hahaha but their gorgeaous musicians!
@relimes what is mike loves role in LIFE?
Dennis didn't say anything during the interview.
wow, interesting facts
Why was Bruce the only one not to grow a beard? Why does Mike Love look like a re-animated corpse in this vid?
@relimes
It's just that he loves doing his Yoko Ono bit.
@rascal211 I think he said, "Duty free."
Ha ha ha!! I thought just the same! (see an alternative video for this song here, Mike does the same there) They should have given him maracas or tambourine to do some more serious work :P At least he doesn't look like a Karl Marx wannabe here!

Mike Love looks like an exact replica of Colonel Sanders.
Is there just an element of live vocals here.Anyway I care not.The song makes my brain pop.Whats happened to our music.
are you saying manson was rsposible for influencing them ?
Yeah, they should have booted Mike Love and kept David Marks!

Great song! Where's the cords to their guitars? This is live isn't it? :-))

John Smith sign you up where did you study singing ?
I don't hate Love (lol) but he does look kinda irrelevant here.
