Best Beach Boys perfomance I've ever seen - and I've seen them in concert 3 times. My '80s Power Pop band, "The Bngs" performed aboard the Queen Mary 2 weeks before this great Beach Boys show. They were a huge inspiraton for our sound. I break out in chills when Brian Wilson sings "Don't Worry, Baby". They will always be "America's Band".

Yes, Dennis was in all honesty far from a great drummer which is why the band used session players on their records like Hal Blaine. However, more importantly Dennis was a lovely human being and full of energy & enthusiasm. RIP
Elora thank you so much for this improved concert. This was such an important day for me - I was on a trip to visit my girlfriend in Portland, Oregon so I asked a friend in NY tape this show for me (the good old days of VHS tape). I did get to watch some of it that day with her, but couldn't wait to see the whole thing by myself when I got home. For me, this was a tough concert to enjoy, they missed Carl's leadership on stage and generally did not sound good at all, a good amount of off-key singing. Having said that, my favorite part of the show were the three great songs Lady Lynda, God Only Knows, and Don't Worry Baby. Lady Lynda is such a great song, and though I understand why Al stopped singing it, I do miss it very much. Yes, Brian had some issues during "God Only Knows", but he really tried his best and, though I cringed in spots, I was so proud of his efforts. As for "Don't Worry Baby, right at the beginning, I just love the shot of Dennis looking over at Brian and giving him that "go get 'em" signal. And when Brian realized that he was having trouble hitting the high notes, as the song progressed he shifted to those lower harmonies which just made me so happy. As I said - it was a tough day, but that section filled me with joy. I also loved Bobby's "Sail on Sailor" - he always rocked that great tune. Thanks again for this, so happy to see it again.
I could watch this over and over again my Dad and I worked on cars and he got sick of me playing the Beach Boys I would love here him play something else rip the best man ever,

That Brian was game for this at this time touches my heart. Wish I was there. Time made them mostly an oldies act but the vitality of these songs... Their father had sold their catalogue but they clawed it back. Recently they sold the publishing. Must have been a huge sale.

@DJ L33 SUPER late here, but Brian recorded "Sweetie" as a demo in 1986, later turning it into "Love Ya," featured on the second version of Sweet Insanity. A studio version of "Sweetie" from 1981 also still exists in the vaults, and features Brian, Al, and Mike on vocals. Lots of interesting stuff was recorded for the followup album to KTSA, commonly known as "Cousins, Friends and Brothers." Such tracks intended for the project included "City Blues" (never properly recorded as a BBs song; only circulates as a demo on the Cocaine Sessions boot), "Night Bloomin' Jasmine," "Sweetie," "Stevie," "I'm a Man" (a Brian original), a supposedly very good Brian/Mike rocker entitled "Bucks," and Bruce also mentioned wanting to include "Da Doo Ron Ron" from the KTSA sessions. Can also imagine Mike wanting to finish up "Goin' to the Beach" for the album, considering his obsession with it over the years. But anyways, here's a link to the 1986 demo if you haven't heard it by now! ua-cam.com/video/KCVzeDxgJjc/v-deo.html

@@dmer-zy3rb Except that they started having him sing lead on Surfer Girl from like '76/'77, sometimes sharing with Al, I think. Brian would sing lead on that song off-and-on until at least '83, but then it's just Al, who can barely pull it off by that point.. By the mid '80s Al shares lead with Jeff Foskett.
It's nice to see a concert I've never seen before even if it is one of their crappiest performances the 4th of July 1980 was great and Waikiki was absolutely great! They brought their A game there
So glad I stumbled upon this video! I’ve never seen it. Well I recognize some clips they’ve used in different documentaries. Was this the year Carl left to pursue his solo career? Otherwise why is he not here?
Reading David Leaf’s book on the band, this concert was a disaster according to Bruce Johnson. Remember Carl took a break from the group in 1981 because of sloppy performances and lack of great new music. The band didn’t release another album until 1985 after the disappointing Keeping The Summer Alive in 1980. Dennis tragically drowned in late 1983. By the late 70s the band became a parody of themselves with Brian’s mental issues and lack of creativity. The pressure by Love and Jardine to keep the band together playing the hits versus Brian’s wish to go solo and create on his own along with Carl sabbatical from the group left us with this hotch potch performance and possibly the lowest point in the band’s incredible career. If you’re a fan, this is actually hard to watch, just like Elvis a few months from the end.
I wish Carl Wilson was there the day after his performance at American Bandstand on July 4th performing the songs based on his solo album which he played at the previous day. They also should’ve had Myrna Smith joined them for part of that show.
Dennis' standing ovation for Brian was touching.

So happy to discover this. Thank you for uploading.
brilliant outing.....top concert....as usual and being a muso myself...playin' live we're inclined to play 100mph! as opposed the standard tempo!! no complaints at all!
This shows how much they needed Carl...I wonder what was happening to Al on "Wouldn't It Be Nice"🤔Nevertheless This is gold,Thank You for sharing Elora 🆒😎🖤
The Starclipse he got the lyrics turned around...he accidentally started with verse 1...and the great thing for performers to remember who get worried about this type of thing...500k people didn’t even notice! Love it!
And yes, this show would have been that much better with Carl, my favorite Beach Boy!
@@matthurley1988 I agree Al is One of my favorite singers ever
The Starclipse I really enjoy The Beach Boys version of California Dreamin, largely due to Al’s lead, I’m in a beach boys tribute band, and it is probably my favorite one to sing!
@@matthurley1988 That's awesome Matt! I would Love to Have a listen to your band ;)
This is so fantastic!
OMG I was in my 2nd year of high school (14) when this was shown on Australian TV & I recoded the music on audio tape.
I get a little perturbed when l'm in the middle of watching a video I'm rudely interrupted by ads that unexpectedly pop up. That's always been a MAJOR pet peeve of mine! 😢 😮
Eating Valentine’s Day candy while soaking in a big, warm bubble bath and watching this on a laptop placed very carefully on my toilet.
living lavishly!
same
Always enjoy the songs Al Jardine sings. He should have sung more lead vocals.
Back when life was good, and you could go to any concert when all the great artists were around at the time. It didn't cost an arm and a leg for it.
Yeah like Taylor Swift worth 800 M . Whats that about? Stupid!
Mike Love..Carrying Thru Strong & Great Singer⭐️⭐️
Dennis was a full blown junkie since the late 70s. Especially from 1980.
True. Sad. He was an awesome drummer, though.
@@petestaint8312nope
Who cares! He was great anyways.
Carl is definitely missed in this performance!
the beach boys still sound great
18:15 I can't believe they actually did "Surfin'". Amazing.
They had to break out the older stuff because Carl left the band lol
That Brian was game for this at this time touches my heart.
Wish I was there. Time made them mostly an oldies act but the vitality of these songs...
Their father had sold their catalogue but they clawed it back.
Recently they sold the publishing. Must have been a huge sale.
Love them southern California boys beach boys they r my favorite group everything I talk to somebody I tell them I love the beach boys they said they love them too
Thanks!
Without Carl there it’s weird seeing Brian singing lead on these songs but it’s cool to watch at the same time
At 10:21 I had no idea that Napoleon Dynamite was in the band back then.
This was also broadcast on fm radio so you could watch tv and listen in stereo. But the mix was bad on several songs w some of the stereo dropping out
Oh boy I sure can't wait to hear them do Sweetie soon!
@@thejiggy22 According to Andrew Doe, a studio recording of Sweetie from 1981 exists with Brian, Al and Mike singing.
@@jaywhofan I'm aware of that recording!
@@thejiggy22 It would be interesting to hear it one day. To bad we'll probably have to wait a decade for it to come out on a copyright extension release. lol
Cool!
Bobby Figueroa sounds awesome
Yes! Added soul to the set. 👍
where's CARL
Off doing his solo career.
He got fed up with the band being a "nostalgia act" and quit, though he'd return the next year.
I was there too. Had just broken up with my boyfriend a few days before, so I was not having a lot of fun. Glad to be able to see this again. Pity there's not video of Rick Springfield as the opening act.
Brian realizing that the high voice isn't working on don't worry baby despite not even having in ear monitors is funny and sad at the same time.
I'll never understand why they made him sing that and Surfer girl during this period. Whose idea was that?
@@767scarecrow propably mainly because Carl isnt there and maybe the rehearsal went better? Brian himself even seemed to be surprised at how bad he sounded! never heard him switch up the pitch like that before.
It's a really hard song to sing. Very high.
Denny!!!!
It's nice to see a concert I've never seen before even if it is one of their crappiest performances the 4th of July 1980 was great and Waikiki was absolutely great! They brought their A game there
watching Brian sing - priceless!
So glad I stumbled upon this video! I’ve never seen it. Well I recognize some clips they’ve used in different documentaries. Was this the year Carl left to pursue his solo career? Otherwise why is he not here?
Waouh! Thanks! The quality is far better than the one I had...
Can you also upload the full performance at the Mike Douglas Show in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 10, 1980?
Searching that performance
@@juanarvelaiz5071 Awesome
